As per the title, pictures seem to be automatically stored on the internal memory. I have tried and failed to find out how to get them stored on the memory card as default. Is this possible?
Pull out the side menu in the camera, then Settings. And it's right there under "Storage"
Yes, as above, it is in the general settings, then you can change the storage location to the External.

If it's grayed out, then it's not seeing your sd card. You can try rebooting. Or going to the normal phone settings->Storage, and seeing if your sd is listed there.
Tried a reboot still no go. The card is definitely being recognized, I can see it with the file manager and also I've got quickpix to look at the card for my imported pictures.

If there are any pictures or videos in the internal DCIM/100MEDIA folder, it won't let you switch. You have to move those files somewhere else, then the option will be available.

Well this is strange, I have just reset my phone and formatted the card from within the phone. Still no luck, the option is still grayed out.
That is strange. For me, the option disappears completely if I have anything in that folder. Emptying the folder causes it to reappear.
I've just spent 20 minutes on the phone to HTC support. They didn't have a clue and have escalated it up. They will hopefully get back to me tomorrow.

I haven't got the option to change storage either. I wonder why this is. My internal DCIM/100MEDIA folder is empty as well. Keep us informed if HTC get back to you.

Typical of HTC, full of promises to ring back today with the answer, nothing yet.
It's strange how some can and some cannot change their picture default location.
I hope this isn't considered a thread hijack, but has anyone found a way to change the naming scheme the camera gives to pictures? They are named "IMG0001, IMG0002, etc...", or something of the sort. From a sorting perspective, this makes no sense. My GS4 named them in a standard date format, such as "20160415_120030". 2016 is the year, 04 is the month, 15 is the day, 12 is the hour, 00 is the minutes, and 30 is the seconds. Makes things much easier.

I've just sorted my own problem our and it was user error!
I didn't realise that when you go to change camera type (photo, video, zoe etc) that you can scroll that to the right to reveal more options and the settings menu and sure enough in the settings menu was the option to change the location to external and I'm glad to say it worked.

are you using adoptable storage? I'm using removable storage for picts but i can't select internal (greyed out). not sure if it's because i am using adoptable storage or not. i seem to recall being able to select either, before.

Open the camera app. Tap the hamburger menu icon. Swipe the menu headings right until you get to settings. Tap settings. Tap camera options. Drag the list up until you get to storage and change to removable storage.
I have the same problem .
If I want to switch to removable storage , I get "your removable storage is unavailable" .
If it is of any use still I only get the camera options to select storage location (amongst other things) if and only if the phone is landscape orientated. In portrait orientation there are only 4 options available, in landscape 5 options are shown.

I had a similar issue and was abe to resolve it by going to settings, connections and an icon called Network Plugin. If you have this option, uncheck the box next to "enable network folder" , soft reset your phone and try changing the storage option in the camera. Good luck.

hi
i have just looked at my gallery and found the the photos in there wont display ,i get a sdcard pic with a ! infont of it for every photo i have taken!! any one got any thoughts on why this is and how i can get them back ..
I am getting a similar problem. I had my desire running legit eclair and photos were actually just deleting themselves off my SD card. I have recently rooted my phone and running leedroid 1.9 and now the matter has sort of got better. Instead of completely removing any trace of the photos it is now just not showing them in the HTC photo app although they are still there on the SD card? Any suggestions?

This was the first symptom of my SD card starting to self destruct.
Still trying to get to the bottom of whether it is a fake or a faulty SD, or whether my Desire destroyed the card.
may be a corrupt sd card would backup asap and try a new card see if that helps

I too am having this problem...
I noticed a couple of pictures seemed to be missing from the SD card, but restored these from an earlier backup. My initial thought being that maybe I'd inadvertently deleted them
The strange thing is, the same two pictures have been deleted again! And furthermore, they're also missing from an earlier backup of the 8GB card I used to have in the phone.
So, given that I'm now using a 32GB card, and I've lost the same two images, this does not seem to be SD card specific.
It's quite possible I've also lost more, but I'd need to check to be sure - the two I know of just happen to be fairly obvious ones.
I'm now wondering whether this has anything to do with the 3D Gallery app - because I've noticed odd behaviour (e.g. duplicate images) when using this in the past? I'll restore my images again, but uninstall that app first to see if that makes any difference.
(FYI - I'm using an unbranded Desire running Stock Froyo.)
New 32 gig ad card so I know its not that.
I think they are still there but just get blank boxes with a card simble with an ! Mark in font rinsed of a pic .
Forgot I'm running stock froyo and am unbranded.
Sorry forgot I'm running stock froyo and am unbrande

I uninstalled the app, and restored all my missing images yesterday. (As it happens, I'd lost several images from various different folders.)
So far at least, everything's fine and the images are yet to disappear again. Bearing in mind that when I last restored them on Friday, and they were gone by Monday, it's not conclusive yet - but it could well be related to the 3D gallery app.
I was using the APK file found here.
Can anyone else with this problem confirm whether or not they've installed the 3D gallery app too? There seem to be a lot of variations of this app, perhaps some are more buggy than others.
Someone find the solution?
I have this problem too.
You may try to unmount the SD card first.. and putting it back in, using official way by menu -> settings -> SD and phone memory.

its not the same, but i found if photos move folders it still keeps them lingering in the gallery for awhile... I have loads of photos on my phone so if i leave the gallery app open for a few minutes it starts re-jigging itself and correcting all the 'missing photos' in gallery and eventually reconfigures itself (i assume after doing a little scan).... first noticed this when i added a folder to the sd card with pics in and couldnt see them, rebooted, opened and closed gallery a few times - nothing - when i left gallery open for a few minutes it eventually appeared...

If it's happen is a serious case.
So I mean that I need to Terminate HTC Gallery to prevent possibles issues with my precious photos!!!
So this fact is more understandable because it is only photos that goes to "galheiro", as I say in Portuguese.
I use Cubed music player mainly for my music, but today I found that all of my music tracks were duplicated (or triplicated, if that is a word!). I checked with the connected music player as well, and even there there were multiple listings. However, only one track will play.
I then moved all the tracks to my HDD but the listings were still there, and wouldn't play. I tried to search for playlists but could not find any. Also, if I delete any (fake) file using the connected player, the main track gets automatically deleted from the SD.
I could transfer all the files again to my HDD and delete all the files using the connected player, but then I have to do this for hundreds of songs as I can delete only one file at once. I searched and found this to be quite common problem, but there were no solutions! Can anyone please help me with this? I am going bonkers!
Getty going into settings-applications, manage applications, then select' media storage' and clear data.
Thanks but no thanks I went to manage applications settings screen but there was no 'media storage' to clear data. Is there anything else that I can try?
Should have said to make sure you look in the 'all' tab in manage applications, the default view is only ' downloaded'.

The same problem happened to me, I even got so desperate I deleted all of my music in my SD card, but the crappy Connect Music Player doesn't give you an option to at least scan your library, right?
This happened to me when I tried using WinAMP on my phone, I guess there's something wrong with using 3rd party apps. -shrug-
I tried a lot of "scan media" apps from the market, but none of them worked for me. Check those out, maybe that can work for you.
In the end, I did a factory reset and that solved my problem.

If you don't have a way to see all your applications in 'manage applications', I think you have a problem or you have gone into a different menu.
Problem Solved!
@superfastmonkey: Thanks for all your help, but sadly it did not work as I am still looking for that tab! However, I found a solution:
I had another MicroSD card which I swapped in the current one. Voila, the dummy playlist was not there. But when I inserted the original card, it came back. So the problem is with the card, right? I simply backed up all the folders to my HDD and formatted the card. (NOTE: The copied size was different; I guess there was some problem in the card as hidden files options was checked). Anyways, after formatting, I copied everything back and lo and behold, everything works fine and I won't go insane anymore over this!
If you have Eclair, in manage aplications there are no tabs.
You have to push the menu button (bottom-left, obviously), and there must be an option like "view" or something similar. In there should be "All".
"Media Storage" could be written in your language. In my spanish phone, it is "Almacenamiento de medios".
Good luck!

I have a Desire Z. Everything seems to work well on it but whenever I take a pic with the phone camera it doesn't save to the gallery and then it'll randomly show up weeks to months later. Has anyone had this problem?
Also, When I add a new contact to my phone, it doesn't save it under "people". It's saved in some random area of the phone accessable by searching for the name. Any ideas?

Are you using the stock gallery? If so, I would download QuickPic from the Market as a replacement. The stock gallery has a way of mishandling my media, but QuickPic is near flawless.
With the contacts issue... I have no idea. Are you saving to google - not to phone? How long since you've replaced your SIM card?

You won't be disappointed with QuickPic.
As far as contacts, I'm not really sure where the setting is with regard to saving to google versus phone. It does sound like your contacts are on phone only at this time. If you go to Settings > Accounts > Google is there a box ticked to Sync Contacts? If not, enabled it for sure. I do know that when I "add a contact" I am prompted with the option to save to google (synced) or save to the phone only. Of course, I always choose google.
Perhaps try googling "how to move contacts from phone only to google sync on Android?" Or something like that...
lots say its a bug, appears after GB OTA.
im using quick Pic. solves my problem, faster than stock gallery/sense gallery.

Hi all! I love this forum and I would greatly appreciate any help you can give me.
I recently upgraded from the HTC one m8 to the HTC 10 and I noticed that sometimes when I take pictures they completely disappear. They're there for a short while then I can't find them again even when I connect the phone to my PC. I can't change the camera settings to store the pics on the device rather than the SD card. For some reason it won't let me change it. Also sometimes when I take a screenshot I get an error saying that it couldn't store it on the SD card because the app doesn't have permission or sometimes it says that there's no room on the SD card. Both are untrue.
I went to a comic convention today and took some good pics, I went to upload one to twitter but I think there was a network problem because nothing online was loading so I restarted my phone and then the pic (and the others I'd taken during that day) had disappeared. I took more pics and double checked they were in the gallery, which they were only to find they have gone missing now.
Is this a device issue or an Android issue? Any help would be great, I'd love to get these pics back.

after you get your card formatted and working because it does seem like you have a faulty card or not formatted properly to save the photos, I would set up google photos to save them automatically, you have unlimited storage with it if you choose that setting. That way you will have have them backed up even when on the go and since its kinda the new htc 10 gallery no reason not to use it fully, will also remove the sync sign in the app on the corners of your photos

Do you have an issue where you SD unmounts?? Try a different camera app to see if you can map the internal memory.
I've had the problem with the SD card ummounting, it's a pain but apparently something which a lot of people live with.
Try a different SD card, see if this persists, try with no SD card, see if it persists.
Clear data on the camera app within application manager.
Use a file manager and go to DCIM check all the folders within that folder and see if you can see the images you took.
So long as the little preview of the image showed a change within the camera app, the images should still be on there.
Hope this helps.

The photos already save to the SD card. They've always saved to the SD card from the moment I bought it, put it in the phone and formatted it. I didn't even need to change anything in the camera settings. They're just automatically stored there. I could format it again but then if the photos are somehow hidden on the card then they'll get deleted.

I tried different camera apps and they wouldn't let me choose anywhere but the SD card to save photos. I removed the SD card and the camera apps would'nt take pics. They kept insisting I insert an SD card. The camera app that came with the phone wouldn't even bring up the storage option. The other camera apps wouldn't let me choose anywhere else to save photos. They said cannot write here. I'll try another SD card when I have a chance to get one. The little preview showed at first in the photo gallery but the moment I selected it it wouldn't load then it refreshed and the image was gone.
It's just so odd that it's not all pics.

And in file manager?
Also what rom are you running mate?
Any mods which alter installation locations? Are you on the correct firmware? What htc do you have US carrier? International?
It does sound odd, but I'm thinking fixable. Could it be a read / write issue? Has permissions been denied for the camera?
Check permissions within camera in app manager.

Once they've disappeared from the photo gallery they also disappear from the file manager.
It's the stock rom that came with the phone. I haven't modified it like that in any way.
It's O2 carrier in the UK.
As far as I know it's the correct firmware.
The only time there is ever an issue with the camera is when occasionally it tells me it can't save the image due to insufficient storage (which is untrue because there's plenty of storage) the same happens for screen shots sometimes but a restart of the phone fixes this on both occasions.

I haven't tried a factory wipe yet. Was hoping to exhaust all other options first just in case the lost photos are recoverable some how. But if that's my only option left I might just contact HTC about it.
You could be having an SD card issue. My SD card has been replaced and formatted more than once. My pix disappear, and my music disappears. I use a ringtone from my music folder and my phone keeps un-mounting my sd as if it's not in the phone. I know when it happens because my notification and ringtones change.

Ok so I tried getting in touch with HTC but they didn't respond to my email. I logged onto a live chat with them but I got disconnected because they finish at 6pm.
Then I decided to just format the SD card. I figured if I haven't been able to recover those lost pictures by now, I never will be. Besides the phone was getting worse. I could no longer take pics through Instagram and an HTC software update wouldn't download because apparently my phone storage was "read only" which isn't true.
Any way I formatted the SD card twice and set it only for storage not for installing apps and the phone seems to work fine now. I can actually select phone storage in the camera app now where before it wasn't an option. I also no longer get errors when saving screenshots. The whole thing was so weird I'm just glad it seems to be ok now.
Thanks for all your help and advice.
