SD card unexpectedly removed - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

Just received my unlocked 10, t-mobile. Put my 128gb sandisk card in and it works fine, but I keep getting a notification that the SD card is unexpectedly removed. Tried reseating it, still get it. Anyone else?

I put a 200gb sandisk on my htc 10 and no problems so far.

Maybe I'll try reseating it again

Still no luck, might need to reformat it

Could be a defective card too. Or even the reader. My 128 Samsung hasn't made a peep so far.

It worked fine the other day, I've had it for awhile. I think I'll try a reformat and see what happens. I'll let you guys know. Thanks.

My PNY 128GB has been doing that too. It would show the message and when I check on it, sure enough, it's unmounted. So I took it out and formatted it in another phone and it's slightly better. I get the unmounted message, but the card stays mounted. I'll probably try a different card tomorrow.

I have same issue with my Samsung 128gig card. Random unmounted status.

@dottat @protoadies01 Is it possible for you guys to provide the exact model numbers for your Samsung cards for comparison sake? It may help rule out defective device and/or card. My PNY card is the P-SDUX128U160G-GE model.

exFAT Default allocation should be fine, but you can just format it in the phone. If you run into issues, try FAT32. If you still run into issues, try another card.

I'm going to try a reformat today, see if it works

I've been on a clean reformatted card for about 2 hours now, so far no error. I haven't loaded back up yet though.

My pny only gave me problems when I was writing a lot or something big to the card.

I swapped mine out of 4 different phones, then into this one, so it's no wonder it errored

I have a Lexar Professional 128GB Class 10 and am now getting the same problem.
It has been fine all week but all of a sudden from yesterday morning it has started playing up.
I have tried RE seating and it works for a little while then complains.
I have also found just restarting wakes the card up for a little while so am wondering if it is software related rather than physical?

I don't know, I did a full reformat on my laptop, then formatted it on my phone and haven't had any problems since.

Did you reformat as internal memory or just a standard format?

I just tried reformatting mine in my phone as internal memory, but it is failing to recognise the card as U3 which it is supposed to be.

Sd card

My wife has been using her et4g for many months and she has a 32 gig sd card installed but can't seem to put anything on it pics, app, etc. I have formatted and mounted it any ideas?

What class? Some low end sd cards wont work as it doesnt allow fast enough write/read speed
i have the same problem. it's from amazon, and made by amazon, 16 gb class 10. it used to work find on GB but after the ics update, I can't install any apps on it, but i can move files to it
Things don't save to external by default. I've always used mine as a backup, to unload crap from the phone's memory to it. I don't know how to make things save and use the external, if that's possible.
Perhaps its a bad card. Have you tried it in an adapter on a computer or another device? If the card works it could be something else.
I doubt its the class affecting it unless its a really cheap POS.

I believe it's a class 4 or 6 the phone can see it in the menu /settings /storage section and you can mount and format it there. But we are unable to to move anything to it

Have you formatted it with Windows or with the formatter from the SD Card Association?

I guess phones can be finicky. One of my old phones didn't like a card. I don't remember if it was my evo or epic, but one of them didn't like sandisk or Samsung cards. I've got a pny 32, forgot the class, and its not giving me any problems. Never heard of a card not accepting files. You think maybe the rom might have a snafu in it? I don't remember if you said she was running custom rom or not. Try a different brand. If it still does it then the phone might have a hardware problem.

[Q] microSD card died

I had a SanDisk Mobile Ultra MicroSDHC Class 6 32GB (formatted FAT32) in my Galaxy S3 with no issues for about a month. Then one day I was at work, unlocked my phone and got a "SD card has been unexpectedly removed" notification. After that the microSD card wasn't recognized in the phone, my laptop, nor my desktop PC.
Has anybody else had this issue?

question is, where did u buy the sd card it might of been a fake, their are multiple sdcards which look good and real but overall are fake due to the ability to operate in heat, so it might of overheated and crashed(died) its a big issue with fake sd cards out there, they usually go out or burnt due to not being able to take the heat of the phone. On normal operate the sd card should be able to take 40 to 45C which make it 90-100 Ferenheit, if its a real SD card it should be able to take more then this and reach upto 65+C or around there.
easy ways to spot a fake is if ure saving files on ure phone and it says u got a class 6 or class 10 sdxc card and its operating less then it should, it crashes on u when trying to open a file or it resets itself and tries to scan again for it. in many cases it will get too hot and burnt out, or it just stops operating out of the blue.

I bought the card from Adorama (a photography focused site) in April. SanDisk is letting me RMA the card (just got that approved last night). I just want to make sure it's not my phone causing the problem. Up until the "unexpectedly removed" error, I never had any issues with it crashing or having to scan for itself again (unlike the class 4 I was trying to test the card slot with right now).

If that's the case have u tried varies card readers or card ports to see if it could be the unit itself..... However if it does out that way, I believe scndizk does back this up with a lifetime warranty if ure sd card does stop operating and then should be able to replace it.

Even so the gs3 should be able to read ure 32gb flawlessly since it's supportive to sdhc, now it does also supports sdxc which is expected from higher performance sd cards to not be able to read or install correctly on the gs3 unless u format to extfat or fat32. Chances are u might have a bad sd card. By default their storage capacity is 32, after that, that's where u need to take does drastic measures. Try formatting it on ure computer, if it doesn't format then ure gs3 should read it, if it doesn't format u already know.
Had the same issue with my S3.
Turned out that the SD card was dying, this caused it to be unmounted by itself and then mounted again (sometimes showing notification “sd card removed unexpectedly”), hence triggering the media scanning process.
I created an application to monitor how many times the SD card was removed, and turned out to be unmounted every ~3 mins!!!
I then bought a new Transcend 32GB Class 10 card, and until now, this never happens, no reports from the application whatsoever, and no media process eating my battery.
I just published this app in the play store now, this is the link:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sdcardmonitor

32 GB SanDisk Ultra class 10 will not read

This card used to work regularly for about 4 months then one day my phone said it dismounted and it became defective since that notification. I returned it due to the warranty and got a a brand new card from SanDisk. My computer reads it (and I formatted to FAT32) but, my phone refuses to even see it. And yes I attempted to format within the phone in the settings and it doesn't even say its mounted. Any possible suggestions? I tried everything it seems like. Thanks
well what rom and kernel are you running? that helps.
is it only that card or any card?
have you looked for any dirt or crud in the sd card slot. try blowing into there.
are you sure you have the card clicked in all the way? past the point where it springs back?
Here's another suggestion. Load a new rom @asop or touchwiz and if everything but your phone detects it still then you probably have a defective card reader.

There is a thread on the forum about this very issue. Android runs a system thresd called media server and it runs every once in a while. When it is running, it will thoroughly thrash your sd card, by reading and writing. You can notice this behavior when you boot or reboot your phone; your phone is sluggish and laggy for the first few minutes-media server is running, reading the entire contents of your internal and external storage AND writing a new databse of what it finds.
This unnecessary thrashing dealt by the media server results in eventual ruination of solid state memory cards.
You can disable the media server by instaling and running an app called rescan media root. You have to root your phone to use it.

It randomly began to work one day when I inserted it again. But occasionally when I turn on my screen, it says "Preparing sd card". It is a brand new Sandisk card so it doesnt appear to have anything wrong with it physically. It works for now but I'm afraid it may not function soon. I believe Sandisk class 10 sd cards have had trouble in some Galaxy S3 devices similar to mine. Any other ideas?

SD card not mounting

here's a real puzzler. Today I noticed that my SD card wasn't mounting anymore. I'm rooted on stock ROM. Everything else seems to be working. It won't mount. I've tried using root Explorer and TWRP. Nothing. Thoughts? Anyone?! TWRP sees the card while I'm in recovery. Once I reboot into stock ROM, I lose it. I try to mount it, then I'm getting a 'safe to remove card' notification.

Stupid question, but have you tried physically re-seating the card? I had odd issues like that on my S2.
Other thought, can you mount the card using a PC?
I've tried reseating the card multiple times with no luck. TWRP will see the card while in recovery. But when I boot into the OS, I lose it. I'm stumped.

One random thought, and probably isn't your solution ... Is the card formatted with exFAT or ntfs. Gs4 won't natively support ntfs formatted cards. Plug it into ur pc and check the properties... Worth a shot

If this was the problem would it cause all sd cards to unmount? Or could it just effect 1?
I have a 32gb card that unmounts and remounts randomly. My 16gb card doesn't seem to have the problem.
Im not sure if the 32gb card is faulty or if it has a correctable error. So far formatting it does not help.
The difference between me and the op is that my card will mount, it will just unmount itself at a random later time.

Have you by any chance flashed a different kernel? I believe ExFAT file system is closed source and is not supported by most custom kernels, even if you're still running the stock ROM. If not, can you think of anything that you've changed between the last time you remember your card mounting and now?
Same here, plus viewing media on the card in the gallery seemed really laggy. I switched to a 16gb and have had no lag or issues with the card being mounted. The cards I got are both SanDisk Ultra cards

Back to exFat, formatted with PC, Mac back to fat, either AOKP, or touchwiz. Same issue. At first it was fine. Then slowly started dismounting and remounting. Then refused to mount...worked around the issue by formatting in exFat, mounting in TWRP.and reformatting... Yes, as a matter of fact. Look up at the link I posted above. Turns out it has to do with rooting and needing to flash a SetUID kernel prior to flashing Super SU. Something in there about exFAT not working. Flashed the exFAT fix and I'm up and running!

My phone is completely stock and unrooted. It's an SGH-M919. I've had it for less than a week.
I too am having an issue with the SD card. I bought a brand new 32gb PNY card, class 10. At first it mounted fine and there was no problem. I transferred files to it from my old 16gb card that was in my Sensation for 2 years.
The following morning, after the phone slept and charged for the night, the card unmounted itself. There was an error message in the notification bar. I tried repeatedly to remount the card to no avail. I reinserted it a dozen times, rebooted the phone several times with pulling the battery, but the card wouldn't mount. I then tried the card in my wife's brand new S4 (we got both phones the same day) and the card didn't work in her phone either.
I then plugged the card into my laptop and it mounted just fine, and all data was still on it. I tried it in the phone again, but it didn't mount yet again. I even reformatted the card in my laptop, but it still didn't work in either of our 2 S4's.
I went back to Frys and exchanged the card for another PNY 32gb card. It mounted in the phone just fine, and again I transferred files to it. This morning, again after a night of charging the phone, the new card was unmounted with the same error message. However, when I woke the phone up, after a few minutes the card remounted itself without having to take it out and reinsert it.
So far it's been about 7 hours and the card has stayed mounted with no issues. We'll see what happens overnight again, when the phone is charging and sleeping.
On the other hand, my old 16gb card has stayed mounted in my wife's S4 with no problems for several days now.

Ext SD Card Not Recognized

Like the title says, picked up an SD card, doesn't show up under the Storage menu or when I connect to PC via USB. I've downloaded an app that lets me format the SD and it shows up there, but after formatting I still can't access or even see that the SD card in installed.
It's a GSKILL class 10 64gb SDXC
Hmmmm. Have you tried a different card to see if you get the same results? I'm using a Lexar 633x 64Gb card. No problems to report so far.

I am having the same problem with a dual sim D858 G3.
Have tried Sony, Samsung, Sandisk MicroSDXC cards of various capacities, none work.
Anyone have a solution ?
Hmmm, investigation with a torch and loupe revealed that one of the MicroSDXC reader pins were bent down.
Managed to lift it with a needle and now it works fine.
This was on a new phone, wonder if other people's problems had a similar cause ?
Format the SD Card in storage settings. It should format and be useable
Try couple things:
1. Try (may be borrow from a friend if you don't have one lying around) a different brand name card. Some generic brand cards (especially from eBay) are little flimsy and does not provide proper contacts. It happened to me on both HTC M8 and LG G3. Tried SanDisk card and all went well.
2. Try formatting the card using PC into Fat 32 format (you can always reverse this formatting to ex-fat) and see if this make any difference.
3. This one sounds very basic but under storage, sometime you have to manually click on "mount SD card".
Good luck!
Ok try this
1- but it in lapttop slot (card reader of laptop ) dont try another way .
2- use SDformatter 4 .
3- ok now put it in your device.
I hope it will work properly

I have this problem too. April 2017 and LG STILL haven't sorted it out. Impossible for so many owners to have faulty phones. Definitely a SOFTWARE issue ! Terrible customer service. I actually NEED to use an SD card in my work. .Never getting an LG phone again.

Have spoken to a repair shop and what they said is that this is a typical issue with the LG G3, another one (which I also see a lot) is spontaneous reboots, even when the phone is seemingly doing nothing. And these issues get only worse over time. The only way to solve them is to replace the mainboard, which probably isn't worth it. Looked at alibaba.com, they are around 30-40 USD. I have reflashed the stock firmware in my futile attempts to get both issues solved, but it is obviously a hardware issue.
Yeah stopped working too. I've noticed an issue with a pin in the MicroSD card slot. I imagine this is the issue. I'll open it up when I have time.
Take the card out, insert it in a PC and check it for errors. DiskGenius or MiniTool Partition Wizard can help you here. DiskGenius can also check for partition table errors.
Also make sure the card is formatted exFAT, not FAT32 or NTFS and that the cluster size is either 8K or 128K.
If that doesn't work back up your files, format as exFAT with 128K cluster size, then copy the files back. You may have to do this anyway if a partition table error is detected.
