Right now there is no ROM installed on my phone because I just wiped my phone, but when I went to install a new ROM, it doesn't seem to recognize my external SD card. I tried 2 SD cards and neither of them work, but they work on my other phone. How can I fix this issue? I went to mount and it says "E: Unable to mount '/external_sd'.
Update twrp if available, if not try to reflash it and if it still doesn't work then try cwm

Thanks for the reply. Which method of installation would be the best? Odin? I only have access to recovery as far as I know.
Yes Odin

The latest TWRP doesn't seem to recognize my SD card either. Also both of them are saying that my device is not rooted and it asks if I want to fix root. I'm trying CWM now but it isn't finding anything either.
Edit: CWM says my device isn't rooted as well.
Edit 2: Flashed http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23212708291679687 with Odin and when the phone boots up, it's stuck on the Samsung logo. Any thoughts?
Factory reset. Incompatible data probably causing boot hang.
This will wipe apps and data.
Thanks for the help everyone. I flashed back to stock and re-rooted. However it still won't read anything from the external SD. Does this mean the SD reader is broken?
Can you plug it into the computer? Does it see it there? If so what is the file system type? Can you format it?

Yep, the computer only sees the phone's harddrive, not the SD card. On my other phone, the SD card is working fine.
No, I mean plug the card into the computer. Not the phone. But if another device uses it ok, then you msy just need to reformat using the computer.

Reformat the card? I will try that. But I have two SD cards and neither work on my S3, and both work on my S4.
That tells me the cards are ok and something is probably wrong with the device then. If you format one card to fat32 and it still can't read it, its probably hardware.
@bjornturoque Here was my problem. Exactly like yours. I am BL unlocked, Rooted, TWRP 2.8.7. I am having a problem with the ext sd card not being read in TWRP. I have had ver 2.8.5 / 2.8.7 / 3.0.2 of TWRP and none of them will read the card. I have tried formatting the card with my Note4, GS 5, Tab S, and my PC using SD Card Formatter. Still getting the same result.
Here is what I did to fix it.
Install Xposed, Download Wanam Xposed, activate the module, open and go to security hacks and check the box for SDcard RW permission, then reboot.
I just did this to mine and it fixed my problem. Hope it works for ya.
Format SD-card via Windows (FAT32/Default Allocation).

No, doesn't work
I have a 128 GB SD with exFAT, it worked without problems in TWRP 3.0.2 recovery under CM12.1
Now I am on CM13 and beside the bluddy permission google-bug it works in the system but not anymore in TWRP 3.0.2 recovery.
I tried to fix the permissions to write to external sd (this 128 GB sd) by adding stuff to the /data/system/packages.xml file, see this post.
But I didn't change the wrong thing I am pretty sure and doubt that this is related, as TWRP comes without using this file, I guess.
I flashed 3.0.2 again with Odin, no change.
Fact is, that I installed CM13 with another SD-card, a 64 GB FAT32, not this one. Maybe it never worked under CM13. But anyway, what has TWRP to do with CM13 and its permissions? TWRP is previous to any CM system, which is not running at TWRP times.
What could that be?
I flashed now CWRM v6.0.4.7 (ClockworkMod Recovery) but the problem persists:
E: Can't mount /storage/sdcard1
Error mounting /storage/sdcard1

What is it? The sdcard is working flawlessly in the running system and another FAT32 sdcard works in TWRP. What do I miss here?
Is it that TWRP and CWM doesn't know exFAT?
I think to be quite sure that this was working, I have exFAT since a while now.

i need help. i used TWRP 2.6.3.2 to flash a rom but something happened and i can't boot into android. everytime the device powers on it goes into twrp. unfortunately for me for some reason this version of twrp won't read any micro sd cards i insert into it. is it possible to use adb on windows to flash a newer version of twrp so i can go back to the stock rom? if so how? adb does not recognize it when i enter adb devices. can anyone guide me towards the right direction, i'm at a loss at what to do to get my tablet up and running again.

It should read the SD card. are you saying you are unable to mount it? you may have to hit the check box to mount your SD card. I think it might be under Advanced, but I'm not sure. I know its there somewhere!

Hi sleekmason, i am going to sell my palman and so i need to get back to stock. I know izs not necessary because the OTAs can be flashed with TWRP but the new owner is not that nerdy as he needs to be.
Can you tell me the steps to revert anything in the right order? I followed all the steps in the OT and have backups etc....
btw...you did a great job with the kernel for v510
flashed the latest kernel (v4) this morning, switched to the wheatley governor .. no anomalies, too soon to tell. I'll give you an update when I have it - thanks for your work on this.

Was Wheately the default? It should have been. Let me know! I'm still going to add a few things.
Is there any special way to format to try to test the new exfat support? That's what has kept me from using this kernel for the longest time.
I just flashed the latest kernel, erased the SD card within the regular Storage Settings, but the card still fails to mount successfully. I will try to pop the card out and reformat via Windows in the morning to see if that has any impact.

Why would it keep you from using my kernel? until now, there were no changes to the extension types the sdcards can use, meaning there was NO difference regarding exfat support between the stock kernel and the sleekai kernel.
The device itself will not format the card to exfat. Please let me know if your exfat formatted card works. Not having exfat myself, I am relying on you people to tell me!

There was something in the old versions that conflicted with exfat formatted cards. I honestly couldn't say what the difference was, but the stock kernel worked fine. It's been a long time since I tried this kernel, but when I did everything else worked great. I just travel a lot for work so I'm always putting movies on the SD card >4GB, so fat32 wasn't an option for me. I'm on lollipop now and it's generally a little more sluggish than KK, so that's what peaked my interest in giving this kernel another shot.
I tried a quick format in Windows, but that did not make a different. I'm still unable to mount the card on the tablet. I'm trying a full format now, but that'll take a while since it's a 64GB card.
Appreciate the help.

I certainly appreciate the effort. I did try a full format from Windows, but that didn't have any impact. It's a 64GB G.Skill card, FYI. If there is anything else I can try that might help troubleshoot the issue, let me know.

No luck, I'm afraid. I'm using lollipop.
The curious thing that I noticed is that I can see the SD card in TWRP. I can also mount it and access it over USB via MTP. When I boot the tablet it then disappears and can't be seen in Android or over USB/MTP. I don't know if that means anything, just an additional observation.

It does. I don't know anything about how twrp works though. Sounds like a mount issue. If one of the other developers knows what's happening, I would appreciate the insight.

Okay, there may be something notice for exfat after all. There is a tuxera exfat module that should be available as texfat.ko in /system/lib/module, but it is not being made(compiled) and I dont know why....
But! Here may be a solution after all. I was missing a command in the init.palman.rc for the exfat I Compiled into the kernel from Mako sources.
I still need to get a card formatted exfat when I get a chance. You could try from a terminal emulator using my kernel that should have exfat support with these commands
as root. So first do:
Code:
su
To get root access, then:
Code:
insmod /system/lib/modules/exfat_fs.ko
Code:
insmod /system/lib/modules/exfat_core.ko
to activate the modules. It is worth a try anyway.
You can get a terminal emulator app from the playstore
This would be my next step. If it works, I will put them directly into the rc file

I gave that a shot, but got an error on the first one. I copy/pasted with Pushbullet what you suggested. Here is the output from the terminal:
Code:
[email protected]:/ $ su
[email protected]:/ # insmod /system/lib/modules/exfat_fs.ko
insmod: init_module '/system/lib/modules/exfat_fs.ko' failed (No such file or directory)
255|[email protected]:/ # insmod /system/lib/modules/exfat_core.ko
[email protected]:/ #
I checked that directory, and it looks like the file exists, so I'm not sure what happened. The second command seemed to work fine (no positive or negative response).
EDIT: I just repeated the commands and the first one seemed to work fine now. Maybe the second one just needs to be run first? Now it gives me a message saying the File Already Exists when I re-execute. I haven't noticed anything different. I tried restarting the tablet to see if I noticed a difference, but nothing yet.

restarting won't help as you have to run the commands after the tablet has already started. But yes please try again running the second command first and then see if you can see any files, or mount, etc.

I restarted to try a clean attempt, ran the exfat_core.ko command followed by exfat_fs.ko and they appeared to go through smooth. Unfortunately, I can't get the SD card mounted still. I tried reformatting the card again and no luck. I created a 30GB partition, formatted in FAT32 and the card mounted without issue. I reformatted the partition back to exfat, but am unable to get it to mount.
Note, I'm still using the Lollipop5.0 version of the kernel, not the latest 5.2, just to clarify.
I appreciate the help and sorry I can't offer more troubleshooting help.

that's okay, at least you tried. The original stock kernel has exFAT support through what I believe to be a proprietary driver that was installed during the making of the device and device tree. And in the kernel source that I download to compile a new kernel, it is not there. If I could just find that driver we would be in business. I dont know why it is missing, and maybe I just am not seeing things clearly and it is there somewhere. Ill keep looking.
@siopaor
I think we have a winner! Please give the below kernel LollipopSleekai5.7 a shot
I am very hopeful. I wound up scrapping the exfat code I found in another developers github and went straight to the source. You shouldn't need to insmod or do anything else as I wrote it into the init.palman.rc. Please let me know! Best Regards,

I think you're right. So far, so good. I reformatted back and forth between FAT32 and exfat, copied an 8GB video file to the SD and was able to access and play it without issue. All I did was flash this new version of the kernel and everything worked just fine.
Thanks for the time you spent tracking down the solution for this, very much appreciate it.
Absolutely awesome!!!! I will be making an updated version with fsync enabled by default and other optimizations. So the next kernel out, maybe tonight, you may want to switch out with. Or, you can just keep using this one. It is most definitely good to go. KitKat version coming as well
Wondering if anyone has managed to figure out a way to get this working, or if I'm just missing something. I've tried everything I can find online, including a custom kernel (EX), (both) paragon NTFS mounting utilities, stickmount, a couple different TWRP-flashable .zip's, as well as miscellaneous other root apps that supposedly will mount NTFS, all to no avail.
Running 9.0, stock rooted + EX kernel and Magisk. And unfortunately FAT32 or other formatting isn't an option in my case. Any thoughts or advice or is this just a no go? Thanks!
Android doesn't support NTFS and is unlikely to ever support it. If none of the apps you've tried work then there isn't anything you can do except format the drive you want to use as FAT32. I know that isn't an option, but you don't havr many options here.
Paragon "works", but only in a couple of specialized file managers. There's no generic solution I've seen that simply mounts OTG as a directory. There is a Magisk package that claims to do this with vold, but it's only supported by an older Magisk version and doesn't support Android 9 yet.

Android only supports FAT32/Ext3/Ext4/exFAT. Why is FAT32 not an option? It will support up to 2TB partitions and although it doesn't natively support encryption, it is possible to encrypt data on a FAT32 formatted partition. What is it you are trying to accomplish?
The OP likely has a device formatted as NTFS and doesn't want to go through the trouble of pulling off the data, formatting, and replacing the data. Unfortunately for him, he's going to have little choice but to fornat to be able to use it.
exFAT USB drive wasn't supported on my P2XL Pie, tested a few days ago. Had to format FAT32 through Android (since the only options were FAT32 and NTFS in Windows File Explorer).
i may be a little late to this thread, but
total commander from c. ghisler and
usb stick plugin (tc) from ferenc hechler
does that. it worked on Android 8 at least, on android 9 i have some troubles atm, i can only copy data to my expandable sd card storage, but maybe it's a bug on my hand, worth a shot.
there is a free version of the usb stick plugin as well and total commander was always free without ads
Hey all, long timer here, just been awhile. I happened across my old Nexus 7 in my closet the other day and decided to update the ROM. Unfortunately I wiped it before I realized my OTG won't mount. I've tried 3 different dongles I have and 2 different USB sticks I have, one 2.0 and one 3.0. I'm running TWRP 2.8.7.0 which may not help my cause, but if I can't mount OTG, it doesn't matter anyway. Is there a certain size or style OTG this version of TWRP is able to see? Any help is appreciated. I can use ADB but it's been awhile. Thanks in advance.

Hi, ensure FAT format for OTG. But you can easily install either stock or custom ROM with scripted solutions, and no need for OTG nor direct ADB commands.
