On Marshmallow, the camera preview doesn't show. It just unlocks if your face is seen. Otherwise you can enter your pattern.
On KitKat, you would have to wait for it to try and unlock using your face and this took longer and didn't always work. I think this is much better now.
Make sure you have good lighting and try it. Try to reapply the face unlock and improve the face matching.

On cyanogenmod. It shows a face in the bottom of the screen when turning on the screen. It means that gave unlock camera works.

Hi
i know you can get slide unlock to work so that if you slide to the left you can take a picture instant and to the right to unlock
but how do you get that feature with a PIN code or a PATTERN?
You can't. Going to camera directly would bypass the security test so its just not available.
yeah but i was thinking that the camera app would open in a kind of jail and would only allow to fill up your phone with pictures

I think the iPhone 4S does that.
yeah and thats cool... now ics could it do it aswell?
Will the play be getting face unlock via ics or is there a gingerbread version of it anywhere?
Probably yes, the problem is that this feature can be cheated by simply scanning a picture of you on facebook or a paper photograph. Makes the app quite useless in my opinion.
Depends on what you want. If the security is to keep out casual snoopers then it's good. If you keep nuclear secrets on your phone owning an xperia play was probably the wrong choice.
Thankfully for me I don't and I don't hand out free photographs of my face so it's sufficient. Then again I also use the swipe pattern which is even easier to crack then face unlock. Each to their own really.

Also with the poor resolution on the front facing camera it would be pretty hard to unlock your phone in dark places.

I used to have an app that required your face to unlock an app, you need great lighting.

The app was called Visidon App Lock
And you need light lighting or sunlight to get it to reconize anything, so I would assume the ICS Face Unlock feature will be the same.
A way around the picture scanning thing would be to unlock the phone with a stupid expression. As for the light...don't know

The only reason we would not get it is if Sony Ericsson think it may challenge their beloved Arc which has no Front facing camera.

I just downloaded an app called "FaceRecog PhoneLOCK" i will try it out and report back with what i find.
**UPDATE: It seems to work, but you do need pretty good lighting, and if you wear glasses, you will have to take them off, or the app wont be able to find your eyes.**
Face Unlock is improved in the JB ROM. It has a "Liveness check" you must blink at the phone to unlock
Does anyone really use face unlock? lol It seems like such a useless feature, unless you are really that paranoid about keeping your device secure.

I think you have that backwards.
If you are paranoid, you wouldn't be using it.

I use it because it's faster than swiping a pattern or punching in a pin. I just look at the phone, then it unlocks
Does it use the light meter yet to skip directly to the secondary unlock method in the dark?

if it's dark it says it can't see then prompts you for pin#.
I just got my brand new HTC 10 today. Double Tap to Wake works fine, but why does DT to Sleep ONLY work on the lockscreen and not from the Home screen?
Can someone help? I already did a Gravity Test/Calibration Check btw.
Thanks!
It would not work because probably the first tap would open the app from the shortcut on your home screen if you would have any. This is why this is not working on home screen or any other screen. Just in lock screen mode.

Kruk,
Ok. Is there ANY way around this though? My Sony Xperia phone has the same feature but NO issue with double-tap to sleep despite also having a lock screen.

On the stock ROM, no. Some custom ROM's have a feature that allows you to double-tap the status bar to turn the screen off, though.

Do I have to unlock the bootloader and/or root my HTC 10 in order to get those ROMs? Please say no. lol I'd be fine with double-tapping the status bar. lol

yes, you would need to.
Nova Launcher has even a feature to double tap anywhereto turn the screen off....BUT it needs root to for that.

I'm pretty sure Nova launcher doesn't need root for double tap to lock. It works on my unrooted HTC 10. I'm not sure if it requires Pro though

I have Pro Nova, but still couldn't get it to work. Well, I mean I did, but the problem is, while it's "working", all the security stuff on my phone gets disabled as a result. I DO NOT have this issue with LG, Samsung, and Sony phones, only HTC. This is unacceptable. HTC should know better.
Nova Launcher does it fine, however, when unlocking, if you use fingerprint security, it forces you to use the password. This is probably an Android security issue, and not an HTC issue, since it behaves this way on all devices. I'll let someone with more knowledge on the subject explain why it is so.

Yeah but on LG, Sony, and Samsung phones, their systems DO NOT force you to put the password/PIN in again. That's why I wish HTC would take note of what those 3 are doing and implement those processes on their own phones.

Hi jimm2,
I'm actually VERY familiar with that app and had been using it for years until recently. I also have family that still use it.
I DID actually try that one out too, and it DID work...........however, the sacrifice I have to make in order for it to work is that I can no longer have the security settings of my phone enabled.......it completely bypasses them. And I am not willing to give that up, so unfortunately I can't use it.
Thank you though anyway!
I have fingerprint security to unlock the HTC 10.
Now I cannot wake the phone with double tap to wake. Is this a bug or a security issue which is normal?
thank you

Double-tap to wake works fine for me with fingerprint unlock enabled. Are you on a stock ROM, or custom?

Hi,
I'm using the stock ROM. I'm guessing it may have to do with HTC Lockscreen. Is there a way to reset it? Or possibly there is another strange reason for the problem
Thanks

Fingerprint is always faster and more secure. You can go back into settings and add more face data for faster unlock.

Yeah it's cool if your hands are full I guess. Or you have something on your hands like gloves or chocolate
It works good in the dark to with brightness up
I am using face unlock with double tap to wake up screen from motion control settings. It is kind of fast but finger print unlock is way faster.
I fell that the FU is pretty good compare to others in the mid game but compare to iphone x or 5T is nothing....but in anycase using it in lowlight is pretty bad but i prefer the finger is faster but you can use both remember that.
Mine unlocks in less than a second with face but I use fingerprint as well.
