Did I mess up my phone? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My HTC G2's old. Way old. I've been using it since at least 2011.
So I decided to clean it today.
I took the case off and cleaned the phone with rubbing alcohol pads.
When I finished up, all the grey plastics of the phone felt slightly rubberized. It doesn't affect the black parts nor the aluminum parts, just the gray ones.
I honestly can't remember if the material was this way before. I always had the case on. Can someone tell me the texture of the gray plastic in their phone? I faintly remembered the phone being smooth all the way through.

I think you're OK, its smooth but for sure has a rubbery feeling to it

Where are your scratches/blimishes on your G2?

Just out of curiousity of course. But where do you see the oh so painful marks of daily use on your phone? I've only dropped my phone one time, in a case, and it survived without a mark actually. But I do have a slight chip in the rubberized matte coating on the edge of the phone, simply from taking off and on the case. And also on my battery door, the metal finish on the actual metal door is chipping slighty too. also on the keyboard part, where it is solid black on the ends of the kb, small scratches are showing up. :/. Sort of off topic, but how could I just completely wipe clean my battery door and "unfinish" it?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I too have the tiny chips/scuffs from where the clips on my hybrid solid case fitted, I also thought it was from removing it too much but infact it was just wear from when I shut my keyboard and the clips scrapped the edge slightly,.... hence, my phone is now naked.
.... also have two tiny scuffs on the battery door cover where the plastic is peeling,... have you seen the "polished G 2 door ",... I might do that myself.
That's it,.... need to get around to trying one of the gel two piece cases ASAP to prevent further damage.

I got a dent on my battery door that happened when I was frantically grasping at my phone trying to turn off the alarm in the morning...
it fell onto a chair leg or something like that lol
I got a gnarly scratch on the right side about an inch above the camera button. I don't know where it came from either =( there's also a small scratch on the left top that really only made the metal shiny. Do I even have to mention the battery door? I have a new one lined up for when I sell my DZ...the Atrix will be my next phone =)

My battery door has a few lite scracths but other then that I'm good.
I don't use a case (G1 pouch FTW) & I have a screen protector on since day 1
Delivered by Western Union in the rain after 70 Years
2 really minuscule pieces of dust under the screen. Doesn't bother me at all, can't even notice them unless your looking for them.
The body of the phone is in pristine condition, thanks to the Otterbox case. Screen is scratch free even without a screen protector.
Its funny how much I baby this phone. It only goes in my jacket pockets. If I put it in a coat pocket that has a zipper I wrap it in a microfiber cloth for LCD TV's so the screen doesnt get scratched placing it in or removing it from the pocket. All the other coat pockets are "safe," where I dont need to use the microfiber cloth.
Ive had my phone since the beginning of October and not one scratch , blemish ,
discoloration , etc . I baby my phones as much as possible though , Probably a
little excessively haha

Battery door, metal surrounding the screen, some bumps here and there, discoloration around the keyboard, some gray rubber parts are already black (seems there's black plastic underneath). But that's not the worse part: screen is cracked like Pangaea is now the modern Earth. Yeah, I've misused (and abused of) the phone. Still the best phone I've ever had.

Well my phone has seen some abuse. I try to baby it, but I work on a dairy farm.lol. been dropped a half a dozen times. Mostly on concrete. But it's looking good still. Two big dings on each top corner. A few small ones on the right beside the screen. My battery cover has some slight scratches. It's a dusty machine tho, I really aught to get some compressed air on it. Oh yeah, and my gf threw it on a hair dressers floor... screen down... no screen protector, only a tiny half millimeter scratch on the screen.

plastidip cover

so i'm posting this in the accessories because you guys are the target audience for this mod.
so i took my stock battery case and used some clear plastidip in a rattle can to give it 4 coats and here is the result.
for give the dust, the case was still tacky when i took the pictures and I couldn't clean it yet, but i really wanted to get pictures and post them rather then wait for it to dry
as you can see it adds virtually nothing to the thickness, the badges and color are still very clear. it's textured on purpose, i put the last coat on Very heavy so it would orange peel and increase texture/grip.
the phone still looks great, but has tons of grip now, and this shouldn't affect any cases, accessories, etc.
if you're not familiar with plastidip, it's essentially plastic in a can. the soft almost rubbery kind of plastic you often find on the grips of hand tools. it won't hurt the case, and if you get tired of it you can just peel it off, very easy.
Very cool. Would give an extra bit of grip if you prefer your phone caseless.

Plastidip Marble white S3
That looks very cool and probably gives a nice grip. Awesome job.
i'm considering this for my International Marble white S3 as i prefer my device caseless and using a leather pull tab.
How much time did you let the coating dry?
LOL, I just did the same thing today, I'll post pics in the morning.
Used The black color on my white phone.
In black....
A little wet
Still drying

Its awesome grip.
I let each coat dry 30mins. I let the final coat dry over night but the can says 4 hours. I put it in front of a fan after the last coat and was able to handle and take pictures after an hour.
Hey that black looks good, i thought about using a color but I'm going to rock clear for a bit first. I think that's what's so awesome about doing this, when you get board you just peel it off and spray it with a new color

Well if it sticks well on the battery door, it shouldn't be a problem with the progress you made.
This black looks sexy and will fit the new black S3 when it arrives, although my choice is the white battery door, then spray it with clear plastidip just like yours, as i'm am not going to change the color that my phone is.
i might as well order an extra original battery door, just in case of i want to switch or something else.
Guys this looks great! Can you please keep us updated on how it wears? I am curious to see if it rubs off with normal use. I like my phone best without a case but it is extremely slippery. Thanks for posting pics!
I got a question about this....does the added grip this gives to the phone cause issues? I'm wondering if it makes it difficult to pull out of your pocket cause of the grip factor to the case.....or is it difficult to put back in pocket?

Moto211,
It's your lucky day for getting a great answer to your question. (sorry, I know it sounds pompus ) But I have and love my UAG case. I almost used plastidip on it....especially knowing that it can simply be peeled off at any time after it dries. I used the plastidip on a DIY mod that I performed on my desktop charging cradle. It took a bit of learning to get the desired finish. I peeled it off 2 times before I was satisfied. (each round was 5 coats)
I can say that it definitely adds grip to slippery plastic. (polycarbonate etc) The problem will likely be the eventual edge peeling of the plastidip. In and out of one's pocket will cause this.
I ended up using Egrips. Very pricey and difficult to cut into position. I made sure none of the corners were sharp (like a square) I rounded them off otherwise their edge would catch and peel just like plastidip. (the photo may not show my latest Egrips work) Anyway, the grip and feel of Egrips is to die for. If kinda feels like a JuJube. It grips like magic to many surfaces like car dash or even pant legs yet it's not sticky. It's much better than PlastiDip in many respects.
When I use my UAG one handed...it no longer feels like it will EVER slide off. Best off all, it still slips in and out of my pocket easily. BONUS...it helps the UAG fit better into my CraigsDock. (that's another story)
The pic below is my blue UAG with Black Egrips. I have a Black UAG with black Egrips that looks even better.
Not with handling no, but my jeans pocket peeled it off nicely, so I coated it again and kept it in my soft pockets like my shirt and it lasted all month.
The largest down fall is that the phone case is smooth, for anything that is non adhesive (like plastidip) that means it will peel off. If you were to put it on a rough surface it would be much better.

Considering that you're adding another layer in between the brains and air and the fact that my phone overheats extremely easily, will this make my phone heat up any more?

For those who are wondering about the durability of plasti dip, a ton of people use this on their vehicles that with stand daily abuse from rain, ice, snow, cold and heat. It's a nice way to give a new look or to protect!
I plasti dip the wheels on my Integra and they hold up fine. My autocross civic gets the whole body dipped in a different color every spring and I pressure wash it with no issues, but dragging it in and out of a pocket would definitely destroy it.

!!!htc one uag warning!!! Case scratches phone

Well today was the 1st time in about 2 weeks since buying my uag that i took the case off. And immidiately i noticed and the upper left corner there were scratches. I have a pretty good suspicion its from pressing the power button which then rubs the case agsinst the metal. You dont notice it when the case is on but this is redicilous. Definitely maked me angry i paid $35 for a case that ended up damaging my phone. Anyone else having this issue?

yep I had the same with the official double dip case. Also black phone.
What do we learn from this? The black One is better protected when it's naked than when it's in the case
seriously though, I'm using a pouch now. Much better, doesn't do any damage.
Omg.. I just order this case

Ouch that looks really bad! Anyone else with a Silver One get scratches because of their UAG case?
Nope, not a single scratch anywhere on my black One. I took my UAG completely off to check. Man this phone does feel great without a case, though!
No scratches or smudges on my silver one with my UAG case. Honestly, the black one scratches so easily that I wouldn't blame the case, I'd blame HTC for a design flaw. Especially because there are other cases that are known to scratch the black one. The official case from HTC has identical complaints. These scratches are the main reason why I decided to keep my silver one vs going with the black. The black iPhone 5 has similar issues.

these types of coatings really should be a bit more exotic...something like DLC which is incredibly hard and very resilient to scratches - i know because my watch is black DLC.
in terms of design they edges arent all that sharp but they could use a slightly bigger round in a few places for DLC to be safe.
DLC - diamond like carbon.
I had black iphone 5 naked and my wedding ring scratched the hell out of it in just one day. Just purchased this case as well, seeing this is disappointing but luckily i have the silver one. Usually i try to get two individual layer cases with much softer inner layer for this exact reason, but these cases usually are a little bulkier. thanks for the heads up though.

All I am saying is that if a soft rubber/TPU case is scratching the finish on a METAL phone, I just don't see how that can be the case's fault.
I just put mine on today. I'll check it often to make sure it isn't scratching.
Could it be because some dirt was on the phone when you put the case on? I really hope this doesn't happen due to a design flaw
My $.02
I had this case with my GS3 and it's not rough, and I don't think it's the case that's scratching your phone. I think it's the junk that just stuck in between the case and the phone. This can happen with any case, and it does. I always take my phone out of it's case every few days to clean the phone and the case. All it takes is one tiny piece of something rough to get in there and F*** everything up.
It sucks that it happened but I don't think it's the material that the case is made out of. I am still planning on getting this case.

If there's some defect in the case then probably. But I doubt it's the case. He most likely had some gunk in the case. Take one tiny spec of sand and place it between your case and your phone and that one tiny piece will jack your stuff up. I don't see how that piece of dirt/sand is UAG's responsibility unless they have some kind of "no dirt on the inside guarantee" which they dont.
I own a Black HTC One and two UAG cases that I swap out often and not a single scratch at all. It's not HTCs fault or UAG, the OP must of gotten sand or some other hard particle underneath that scratched it up.
I put the case on right out the package. Cleaned the phone pretty good. The case is very snug so its really hard to get dirt in there. Also i bought it directly from uag so its not a knock off. I honestly dont know what did it but i remember before i even saw the marks when hittin the power button i always thought it was odd how the whole case kinda pushed down.

Scratches on faux metal frame

I got the device a week ago. Put on a spigen case and now I see micro scratches all around the frame. What a terrible design (I'm talking aBout the phone). Better off not having a case! Anyone know of a thin case that won't scratch?

Possibly small pieces of dust/sand. Nothing you can do about it.
I intend to let it go and periodically sand it to a billet like finish rather than obsess over keeping it polished.
Sand the phone. ... The user has to sand the phone to keep it looking good. Great design Samsung.

Nobody said that, smh.
Me too. I think it's the tpu that's scratching the frame. My scratches mirrored the way the case was pulled off, not in a variety of directions what dust particles would move in. I think dust would move laterally and vertically, my scratches only run perpendicular to the top line... It looks like rake marks from pulling the case off. So I think it's the tpu.
It is aluminum and super soft.
Nothing to do but live with it and move on. It sucks. Oh well. Still a dope phone.
using a cheap plastic case and it doesn't seem to scratch it though the phone is breaking the case at the corners where samsung decided it needed to put protrusions.
I got the flip case ND it doesn't scratch any more

J&D TPU Case.......Great case

Finally got a case for my V20 today. I personally like very thin cases as I am not very clumsy and just need something to protect my phone from minor drops. I usually go with Spigen but their V20 cases haven't been getting as good of reviews as they usually get.
Anyhow, this J&D case is exactly what the description said it was. It's very thin and the material feels great. It makes the phone a lot easier to hold without adding any bulk to it. All of the cut outs are perfect and the lips on the side sit just high enough to protect the display. The camera cut out on the rear doesn't look high enough to protect the lens cover but it actually is. In regards to the cutouts I have not had any problems with plugging in headphones or UCB C cables from Anker and Choetech.
Onto the best thing about this case. The color! At first I didn't know how much I was going to like it as I usually go with clear or black cases. I figured the J&D case was cheap enough to try a new color. I went with the red and it's a very nice red. It's hard to explain but it's definitely red. It's not fire engine red or cherry red. You have to see it in person to understand. The back of the case is a matte red and the sides are a clear shiny red so it contrasts very nicely.
If you spend th $10 on this case you will not be disappointed.

Just want to report that after I just got done calling myself "not clumsy" I dropped a phone today for the first time. I'm also happy to report this case did its job and not a single scratch on the phone.
I was getting out of my Explorer today and forgot that I had my phone sitting on my lap. I usually never put it on my lap as I have 3 other places it usually sits in the car.
When I got out, I literally watched my phone launch off of my lap and land on the corner. It then bounced a couple times and ended up 3 feet away from my car. It landed on its back and all I kept thinking was that I was going to pick the phone up and see a cracked camera lens. The way the case is cut, it only sits maybe a half a milimeter above the camera lens. Its so close it almost looks flush. Not only was the lens not cracked but there wasn't even a scuff on it.
The case itself had two scuffs. I was able to rub them out with a wet rag.

Reviewers on Amazon say the case doesnt cover the camera hump all the way. The camera is flushed to the case and touches the surface if it is placed on a table.
