Nexus 5x problem connecting to a specific wifi router - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am confounded... my Nexus 5x will not connect to one specific wifi where others have no problem. (It connects all other places I have been but just not at one specific one). My Nexus 7 connects there but not my Nexus 5x. BTW, I had a OnePlus that also would not connect there and I never did find a solution but figured when I got a 5x (since it was a Nexus) I wouldn't have a problem (WRONG). The phone shows excellent signal strength. It starts to connect says something like "authenticating" and something about "obtaining IP address" but then loops through again and again with no connection.
I made sure the password was correct and I rebooted a bunch of times. I pressed "forget" to start fresh a bunch of times. I tried different speeds (auto, 5 GHz only, 2.4 GHz only). I think I tried all combinations of those things. I tried someone's idea of turning off wifi then turning on airplane mode and then trying to connect but that did nothing. I do not want to try and change anything on the modem (it isn't my modem).
Any ideas? thank you

Is there anything in the dmesg or logcat logs that would lend a clue?
Also I think in developer options there is an option for verbose wifi logging and also an option to use old lollipop dhcp instead of android dhcp.

Like said above go into developer settings and turn on the option for lollipop dhcp, if this does not help try also turning Bluetooth on first then wifi.
Is this a corporate/work wifi?

I won't be in that wifi area again for a couple weeks (it is a place I occasionally overnight). I wil try turning bluetooth on and then wifi and see if that helps - thank you.
It is wifi in a home but they are "Apple people" and not very computer savvy. I don't want to mess anything up on their end so prefer to try to solve the problem from my end. The part that stumps me is that my Nexus 7 connected with no problem.

Try sfhub solution first, it worked for me on my old router.
This phone has a bug where it won't talk to some wifi's properly unless Bluetooth is turned on. Weird I no but i need to do so to use my works wifi and at some of my cell providers free wifi spots in town.

Well that would certainly be an easy answer. thanks. When I try this I will report back but it will be a while.

N5X doesn't support 2.4 GHz WiFi channel 12 and 13
I couldn't connect to my home WiFi while setting up my N5X. I tried various things for like half an hour and was just short before bringing back my Nexus to the store when I discovered that my access point is set to channel 12. The Nexus 5X doesn't support channel 12 and 13. After changing the channel everything worked flawlessly. I don't think that this is the same as your problem because you wrote you already tried 5 GHz, this post is mostly for other readers with similar problems.

No problems here on channel 12 and 13. What model do you have? I have the H791.

We use 1-11 in US (FCC rules). Europe uses 1-13.

[Q] Weird wifi issue

Hi everyone,
I'm enjoying my One X since last Thursday. I did have one problem, though : my wifi wasn't working at home. What happened is that the phone correctly connected at the network, but then it would "kill" the wifi.
I mean, neither of my laptop computer nor my old Desire (which were both connected before the One X) worked on wifi after I connected the One X, which by the way didn't work either.
Considering this issue I wen't to the carphone warehouse to have another phone.
I didn't go home straight, I got to try other wifi network, which worked perfectly.
But, at home, I'm still having the same issue !
Can anyone help me please ?
so none of your hardware is now connecting to your Wifi?
If so, I would suggest a hard reset of your Hub/router. If there is a reset button hold it in for 20-30 seconds, if not, unplug for 30 seconds.
If it's just your One X not connecting try going through settings to ensure its setup correctly.
Had the same issue with my sgs and avm fritzbox 7390. The only thing that helped was a complete factory reset of the fritzbox.
Try using a static ip, make sure it is unique.
There is a setting under wifi advanced to stop the wifi from sleeping when phone is off or kill it if the signal drops or if your phone is idle. I modified those and it works perfectly. Default setting is to kill it.
Nothing is wrong with your wifi. It's just the way you've got it setup.

Actually, my laptop and Desire are connected to the Wifi ; they can't connect only after i set my One X on the Wifi. It's like the phone is destroying the wifi network.

I didn't find those settings. In wifi advanced I only found an setting that disconnect the phone when signal is low.
I should mention that whenever the One X is set on wifi, it works for like a minute. Then all of my devices can't access the internet. Desire and One X are showing that they are connected, but no access to play store, browser... Computer is showing an error message "limited access". And my TV (which I get with my internet box) is freezing.
What I don't understand is that I tried on two friends' network, everything worked perfectly. Only at home As Cxpher said, I guess it must be my wifi that isn't set up correctly. But what can I do next, except hard reset and static ip ?
EDIT : I tried to connect the One X without having any other device connected. It worked, but as soon as I launched the Play Store, I lost the connection and had to reboot my box. Apparently the Play Store is messing everything up. Weither I have hardware connected or not, it never works (again, only at home).

Which router do you have? Is there any logging-function available in the router software/firmware?
Standard netgear.
It's been fine with s2 and hasn't needed to be reset for a over a year....until yesterday!.
Not overly tech, would a log facility help?
A log would help to see what is going on with the router when the phone connects. The fritzbox showed an authentication error when my sgs connected and killed the wifi for all devices in the network. Just googled your problem. Netgear and htc devices seem to have problems very often when connecting. You should try to get the newest fw for the netgear. Maybe that solves the problem.

Sorry I explained it wrong. I meant I already had the problem when I first bought the phone, so I went to get another one. I had the issue on both One X.
Well i have got a netgear router and have no problems at all must be something to do with you router or it setting i would do full reset and see if that helps

i had the same problem with my router ( netgear DGN 1000), i solved by updating the router firmware to latest manually! no more wifi drops now!

In an other thread somebody had advised to deactivate the wifi password in the router. That helped fix the problem at his phone. I will try this too to confirm that. But wifi without password is an absolute NoGo in my opinion.

I'm bringing this up again because issue is still here ; removing encryption on the wifi network changes nothing. Other thing now, it didn't only happened at home but also at work.

Im having the same wifi issue using a D-Link DIR-615. Wifi is working perfectly with other device but when my One X connect to wifi, it freeze the wifi network for all devices. I Always need to unplug/plug the AC cord to reboot and refresh the wifi network and after it may works for a couple of mins or maybe 1 hour and after I must reboot the router again.
My router firmware is up to date but there is no more support/firmware update for the DIR-615 REV. B since 2008!
I switched to static ip and snag persist so im back in dhcp.
I cleared the router log and will post it next time it will freeze.

Wi-Fi unreliable

Recently I've been having problems with Wi-Fi. My phone and nexus 7. They both stay on blue bars all the time claiming they're connected to Google servers. And it'll work good for about 20 seconds and then I'll have no connection for about a minute. Bars will stay blue like its connected and WiFi show that it's fill signal but pages won't load, apps will timeout and YouTube videos won't stream. Makes it impossible to download any Roms or apps at times. This just recently started happening. Videos will stream good for maybe 2 minutes tops. Then pause, after a minute Wi-Fi will stay streaming and going again by itself and stream. I haven't changed my router or is settings. I have static ip's assigned too. All other computers work just fine for internet. Never a problem.
I've tried changing kernels, Roms, complete wipes and reinstalls. Rebooted the router. Nothing fixes it. I'm getting really frustrated. I'm at the point where I'm going trio go buy a new router just cause I want to use 5ghz. Anyways, any suggestions to solve this?

Weird how it affects just my device in an entire thread with a ton of people using the rom and same kernel.
I went and picked up a new router. I'll see if that fixes it. Thanks for the input though. I appreciate it.
Didn't help with new router. My WiFi still cutting out like crazy on Franco kernel. Almost as soon as I turn off screen. But its not turning WiFi off. Just goes into some sort of state where nothing comes through. When screen on everything is fine though now.
In Wifi settings, you could try unchecking "Avoid Poor Connections" and see if that helps.
Also do you have any other devices at home on the same wifi network - do they experience the same issues, I know where I am if we get a lot of rain, it causes intermittent internet slowdowns, I had similar issues and after testing other devices found this to be my problem not my Wifi.
Also, have you got any cordless phones in the house that might run on the same frequency?
I still have an issue keeping wifi at 100% d/l when the phone is asleep, even though the setting is for always on. It must be a hardware thing for me because every rom I've tried from ICS to the latest JB exhibit the same issue. If I am in a desperate need to d/l a large file on my phone, I just temporarily change the screen display off timer to 10 minutes of so so the wifi will stay at max d/l speed.

Ya avoid poor connections is unchecked. And wifi optimization is unchecked. I've tried putting my router on full auto, tried setting static ip addresses for everything. Changing from wireless n to wireless g. Changing security to off as well. Using the 5ghz band instead of 2.4. The nexus 7 is working perfectly fine with the new router. But my galaxy nexus is totally unreliable. Weird is that it just started happening within past couple weeks. And actually, it was good for the first day or so after new router. I can confirm all other wifi devices jn the house work just fine without any hiccups. I've never had a problem with other devices. No dropouts or anything. It's really puzzling me!
One thing I found weird, if I disable wmm on my router, my nexus 7 and galaxy nexus will not connect. Anyone else get this?
I hope you also have your router firmware completely up to date.

Ya my router auto updates itself. Its a Cisco EA6500 in case your wondering and is helpful.
I use my wifi at work and it's very unreliable. At times going into an endless disconnect/reconnect loop. Sometimes restarting the wifi helps or putting it in and out of airplane mode. Other times nothing helps except a reboot of my phone. Some apps may make the issue worse. I don't think there is a fix and waiting for google to fix the flaw a user pointed out earlier.

Possibly a 4.2 issue. But its not affecting everyone it seems. But i see that there is a huge thread about this at the google site. Not an isolated case
When you say you set a static ip, you set one from the router, have you tried setting a static ip on the phones wifi advanced options as well?
Have you tried different radios?

Yup has happened to me mine connects to the net but has grey bars and doesn't open any websites and apps dont connect to the net a reboot solves the problem

I set static on both router and the phone. I've tried all the north american radios. None of the euro ones. no effect. Sticking to the latest North American radio for now. I've managed to make it work sorta with CM10.1 with stock kernel on completely fresh install. It works, but the down arrow on the Wi-Fi icon stays lit almost 100% of the time. no idea why, only other device that was on all yesterday was the nexus 7, and that was on the 2.4ghz and phone the 5ghz. Huge wlan_rx_wake!

When i first updated to 4.2, I was getting crazy dropouts. After unchecking the Wi-fi optimization, it was more consistent but still drops out frequently while at work. There is a known bug with the wifi driver that hasn't been addressed for years, but still trying to find the original articles describing the problems.
It seems you are having tons of issues, worse than most.

It affects me as well. Completely random. Everything appears fine except that instead of blue, the icons are grey. Turning off wifi and turning it back on fixes it.

the weird thing is, it just started happening about 2 weeks ago. It was perfectly fine up until then. Never had an issue with Wi-Fi. If this don't work i might try doing an entire wipe right back to stock and locking bootloader.

It shows I am connected but nothing is connecting to the internet. And no I do not have a firewall on.

Android 4.3 has been reported as having reconnecting issues with WiFi.
Have you tried more than one router? You may want to forget the router on Android and reset the router itself, this has helped me in the past.

To reset it all you should have to do is unplug it for about 30 seconds and plug it back in. There might also be a button in the back you hold down.

Yes it will, sorry I should have mentioned that. You'll have to add the settings back yourself.
It sounds like a router issue to me, since your phone connects fine to other routers, so this maybe your best option.
But you could also try another cm10.2 based rom (I'm on slim and have no issues) (make a nandroid of course) to see if that is the issue as well.
I've had my phone do this with a specific router before as well and resetting it fixed it for me.
EDIT: You could also try changing your phones IP address.
On your phone go to wifi settings>long press wifi name> click modify>check show advanced options>click DHCP and select static>change Ip(when changing IP only change the last set of numbers after the last period keep the 192.168.1.)
Is it 5Ghz band specifically that has problems?
I know I've been having problems with *just* the 5Ghz wireless SSID on my LAN (I'm on NovaGen latest) and came across another thread (I'd have to go dig around more) that basically said there's a known bug with CM10.2 where you have to have your SSID channel set below 48 to get CM 10.2 to connect. Hopefully that helps someone. Worked for me.

I decided to start my own thread because I didn't want to hijack another's.
So here's the problem. Had my 5x for 3 days. And I love it, but it has weird wifi issues. I can't watch YouTube while I'm on wifi but it starts up with no issues while on LTE. Downloading apps and their updates take up to 20 minutes. While it's instant on LTE. Wifi calling is super choppy too. And my 5x occasionally disconnects too.
Everything else works fine on wifi. Chrome is quick, so is feedly.
So I searched here and on Google and many people have the same issue. Some say 6.0.1 was bugged.
Either way I tried all the advice given to others. My router and modem are up do date. I reset them various times. The problem can be replicated on my sister's wifi and my dad's.
Check my phone's APN. Changed to 2.4 and 5ghz bands on the phone. Went back to auto wifi band. Nothing.
Tried safe mode. No dice.
I even wiped. No luck either.
I also tried wiping the data and cache on a few apps, play store being one of them. Can't remember the other two.
Anything else I'm missing or is 6.0.1 really bugged?
Is there a possibility mtc19z has a fix? I haven't received that update yet.

I called Nexus tech support. They say it's not a known issue. Project fi's tech support said the same thing.

Also try enabling developer options enable the setting to use lollipop dhcp client.

OK so far, Bluetooth on does nothing for me. Apps still download slow and wifi calling does nothing.
I'll try the lollipop dhcp tomorrow, with Bluetooth on and off. I'll report then.

Hi man, the lollipop dhcp didn't work. Tried it with Bluetooth on and off
Last option I can think off.
settings/backup & reset/network settings reset.
After that I would try doing a clean flash with the latest stock image, no apps etc and see what happens.
If that doesn't work I would return it for a new one.

Tried that too. I'm stock never rooted. I've wiped twice already. Nexus support is barely any help. But yeah I'll try for a swap. Thanks.
Well project Fi couldn't help since I don't have their services. LG keeps telling me to call Nexus. Nexus keeps transferring me to project Fi.
I'm just gonna go buy another phone. This hassle isn't worth it.

I've always loved Nexus phones because of what they represent. But the customer service needs work.

My N5X has not had any wifi issues, thankfully, but I have had weird wifi issues on other android phones in the past. What has worked for me was to go into my router's settings and use DHCP Reservation to assign a specific IP address to the phone, and to make sure there were no conflicts in the IP assignments of various devices on the network. I also replaced the router's default DNS servers with Google's.
Those two steps have solved my android-related wifi issues in the past. But, again, I haven't had any issues with the N5X so this may or may not help you.

Nexus 5x wifi + Bluetooth.
So couple of years i use it without bluetooth turned on. With some wifi access points phone can't get in deep sleep. Some other access points sending packets to phone.
One day a read about bluetooth "on" options. And surprise, now phone can go deep sleep and dose not have battery drain.
Now i have to keep my bluetooth always on. Was same for android 6,7,8,8.1. with factory reseted.. different kernels dos not help.
Maybe some heard - it is hardware issue? Its go under warranty?

Wifi problems!

I'm having issues with downloads on my 5ghz wifi connection. 2.4ghz works fine. Downloading anything on 5ghz takes forever. A speed test shows I have 90mbps download speed on 5ghz. All my other phones work fine.

I had the same issue with my Pixel XL, especially when it came to Play Store downloads. I had my 5GHz band setup in my router to use automatic channel management. Switching this to manual and picking a channel based on WiFi Analyzer app information seemed to have helped, for now at least. I'm now using channel# 104 for my 5GHz band.
I don't know if this is an issue with the Pixel line. My Nexus 6P never had issues with auto-channel management.
Give the manual thing a shot and let me now if that helped!
My XL has been having weird WiFi issues since I got it on Thursday. The first half of my full day with it was fine, but later in the day WiFi just kept disconnecting and connecting. I was on my 5 Ghz network, so I switched to 2.4 Ghz, same thing. I sideloaded the NDE63P OTA since it hadn't come down for me (I'm on T-Mobile, so not sure if this is Verizon only). This supposedly has WiFi fixes.
Things were fine for a day, but now I catch it doing the same disconnect from time to time. Not as often as on NDE63L, but still more than my 6P ever did.

I was disconnecting from wifi all morning. 2.4 and 5ghz, I rebooted and fixed the disconnecting. I still can't download apps on 5ghz. I sent a Google tech logs this afternoon. Will see what they have to say. No its not my router. I have 6 devices running on 5ghz
Having rock solid performance here with Asus AC-66U. First phone I've had that connects at 800mbps on 802.11AC to my router.

I have an Asus RT-N66. Performance is not a problem, it just doesn't seem to be stable all the time :crying:

Very stable here. Have you tried to disable beamforming? I've had problems with that in the past on the AC-66U

Well, looks like I was too optimistic. The semi-regularly-intermittent slow down is back. It happens often enough to be annoying but not all the time. I'm using the Comcast provided Arris TG1682G. This is using the 5GHz band. I know I could switch to 2.4GHz band but I would rather try to figure out what to do to get this working problem-free on the 5GHz.
Any ideas?

Same exact issue, Comcast Arris gateway. Sent logs to Google. Heard nothing back yet. I have connected to other 5ghz Wifi with no problems. I don't think its hardware. Has to be software and that Comcast router.

I agree with you. My 6P didn't have the issue with the same router.
BTW, How does one get those logs?
Also, I wonder if putting the Arris in bridge mode and connecting an external router might help? It seems like an overkill for 2016...
I'm having the same issues. Mine is disconnecting from both 2.4 and 5. Seems like it works immediately after a reboot but then will drop. I can seem to get it to consistently drop using the ookla speed test app. I also side loaded the latest and it did not help. Please let us know if you get anywhere. I talked to Google support today and got generic response for generic Wi-Fi troubleshooting.

I downloaded updates from the playstore this morning on 5ghz with no problems. I know it's hit or miss. Last night it wouldn't work. A different router in bridge mode might work. You would still need to lease the gateway fron Comcast. Which sucks.
Here is instructions for logs.

I had that problem too one morning. A reboot fixed it and I haven't had it since then. Something broken with this device. Alot of Bluetooth issues people are having also. My Bluetooth is working well.

My OnePlus One has had major wifi issues for the two years I've owned it, especially 5 ghz. This is a treat in comparison. No issues to report yet. I see slowness in opening apps sometimes but no noticeable lag.
No issues with my Google store bought XL on either WiFi band
I had the exact same problems with my wifi but now have stable fast connection after disabling Bluetooth scanning under the location settings.

I tried that last night but it didn't seem to work. I thought it might have had something to do with Bluetooth though because I disconnected my watch and it was fine for a while. Once I re enabled Bluetooth in general, it went back to disconnecting. And disabling it again didn't help, but it always seems to be fine after a reboot for a little bit. Not sure if I hope this is a software issue or hardware issue. Would be nice to have a replacement that works, but on the other hand if it's software, it could be patched. Based on how it behaves it makes me think it's software.
I don't have my Pixel yet but many phones have problems with certain 5Ghz channels. Try setting your router to channel 44 or 48 and see if you have better luck.

No luck, still slow downloads from playstore. I also noticed in Google photos, some pictures are blurry. When I tap into the blurry picture, the spinning circle keeps spinning without bringing up the picture. My ookla speed test are normal fast. My Google Chrome speed test are all over the place, with network errors. Definitely weird. All my other devices work.
