Alright, say I get an 5X, what should be the first thing I do? Update radio? unlock bootloader? Is there a guide? Anything I should know about the 5X (bad/good)? Do I need a screen protector or a case (I'm in Europe)? Anything to watch out for?
I had an S6 that I upgraded to the 6p from, then moved to the 5X. The 6p was way too big. The 5X is perfect.
I would say the first thing you should do is remember you have a nexus device, you can do almost anything you want with it. Root it, add another ROM (Pure Nexus recommended), then try another, and another. Read the threads here as there are a lot of people here smarter than me that can help beyond what I an saying.
I would also recommend the Ringke Slim case. Beautiful design.

Before I forget, I love using Wug's Toolkit to root and install a custom recovery. Makes everything super easy to do. You can find it in the original development forum under it's own thread.
Others may say different, but each to their own I guess. This one is just the easiest way for me since I have used it for many Nexus devices in the past.

Unlock bootloader first. That will always wipe internal storage. It's the only thing that will force you to do that. After that play.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using XDA-Developers mobile app
First thing is to unlock bootloader, if you want to flash roms. As that process wipes internal storage, do that first.
Follow this great tutorial by @Heisenberg to the letter.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-5x/general/tutorial-flash-factory-images-unroot-t3231627
As he suggests in that thread, make a backup of EFS partitionafter you install custom recovery.
And make sure you copy the twrp backup from your phone to PC or any reliable storage
place. EFS as you may know contains stuff like imei number and lots of things specific to your phone. In case anything goes
wrong with wifi mac address or imei, you can just copy that backup to your phone and restore it.
----------------------
Then Download latest stock firmware from nexus factory images webpage.
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#bullhead The latest image is at bottom of list.
In case something happens to your device, like bootloop or soft brick, you can follow the thread below to flash stock images.

Ok, so I am new to this "flashing" and "wiping" stuff. I first heard about it over on another forum. But I couldn't make heads or tails of what I was reading. So I found a tutorial on You Tube about how to unlock my phone, it directed me this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1392310
So I downloaded the tool kit, but I have yet to unlock my phone because I have a few concerns and questions. One is, when following the instructions it says to make a back up. Does this mean getting in to the phone and making back ups of all my movies, pictures and any other media I have uploaded? Also, will I have to download all the apps again if I unlock my phone? And once I have everything unlocked how do I actually upgrade to the newest version of ICS once it is unlocked?

1) Typically backing up your phone consists of making and image of your device. This allows you to restore your phone to its previous condition with little effort. If you are not concerned with going back to your previous image in its entirety then you can just save the files you want. Most people will recommend doing a full image regardless of your intent (safest route).
2) Yes, unlocking your phone will wipe its contents.
3) After you have unlocked the device there are a couple of ways to do the upgrade. There are some threads that cover this in the General Discussion area.
I believe there is also a toolkit that can assist you in this process, but even if you use this I would recommend doing some research on the matter so you understand what is going on behind the scenes.

Ok, so what is an image? Is it just a fancy term for backing up the phone and is the process included in the tool kit? And will it preserve applications?
And I will look search for the threads the help me up load the update. Thanks!
An image is an exact picture of how the phone is now, exact copy. It's very handy... If you made an image, then messed around with different roms etc, you could flash it back to that image and it would be 100% how you had it when you made the image

i'm sorry but, i cannot help you if you intend to use a toolkit. don't come back later opening threads about "bricking" your device. it's YOUR responsability.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626895
edit: and before you ask why you shouldn't use a toolkit, you just have to read any other of those "i bricked my device" threads, i'm sure you'll read posts that explain why.
Please don't take the above post the wrong way. People here just try to help, but some just refuse to read just a little. Fastboot Flash is so much easier and safe...once you do it you'll want to do it over just for fun. Read the link above and you won't have any issues.
Fastboot is safer than toolkits, just don't run fastboot erase bootloader, someone told me it went through on the Nexus 7 section, i personally did not and will never try it.
Question for the OP. Did you even try researching your question before wasting space on the forum? There are plenty of resources on this Site to help. It would have literally taken less time to research the answer than to make your forum post.

XDA Members,
I am pretty new to the world of Smartphones. My first Android was a T-Mobile G2 and I have recently upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy S-III (also through T-Mobile). One of the initial things I did was update it to Android 4.1.1 via a T-Mobile OTA update. I then rooted the device using this method and it worked like a absolute charm. Today I discovered a Sim Unlock thread here on XDA and couldn't resist following the instructions as I like to have absolute control over the technology I purchase.
My next step would be a Custom ROM like Cyanogen I reckon. However I have some questions and will decide based off of your answers here if it actually a step I want to take. I have concerns about functionality, the benefits, and drawbacks. Hopefully your answers here will be enough to calm my nerves on this as I feel it'd be a very big step. So without further delay here are my preliminary questions:
1) How polished in Cynagen for the Samsung Galaxy S3? Are there a lot of bugs, errors, and the like? Is it running Android 4.1.1, Android 4.1.2, or Android 4.2.1?
2) If I switch over to the Cynoagen ROM in place of the stock firmware currently on my GS3 will I notice a performance increase or decrease in terms of speed, memory consumption, and related variables?
3) What functionality and/or features are missing from Cyanogen in comparison to the stock firmware? Specifically let's talk about camera functionality. The camera functionality in the stock firmware is pretty solid. Can I expect the same level of functionality from Cynaogen? If no then what is missing and/or different?
4) I do not have an SDCARD yet. If I move to Cyanogen can I swap back to the stock Samsung/T-Mobile variant of Android 4.1.1 easily and without too much difficulty?
5) What are the benefits and drawbacks to using Cyanogen over the stock ROM? Can you please enlighten me as to why using an aftermarket ROM is so popular?
This is just a series of preliminary questions. I inquired on the official Cyanogen community forums but getting responses is proving to be more difficult than I originally anticipated. I am hoping to have significantly better luck on these forums.

I'm really on the fence about rooting right now, i want to because i want to play all the games with an xbox or ps3 controller, also i only have the 16 gb and didn't realise there isn't apps to sd so 'd like to do the trick to get my sd card to read as internal memory but i have a hard time with the fact that you lose warranty when i have replaced many phones in the past from t-mobile. The technical side scares me in the possibilty of bricking my phone. What was your thought process on that? The warranty thing really scares me like i said because i have literally replaced about a dozen phones through customer care.

Follow the guide I linked in my original post about rooting your T-Mobile Galaxy S3. It's VERY SIMPLE to do using that method. Watch the included YouTube video and then follow the guide carefully. Trust me it's totally worth it. You won't brick your phone if you follow that guide I linked. It's just so easy to do.

If you're too scared to root or flash any roms than just stay on stock. If you follow all the instructions correctly then you got nothing to worry about. I've rooted everyone's phone in my household(we all have different ones) out of boredom lol but I followed the instructions and had 0 issues. Yes you lose your warranty if you root or install a custom rom but it's very easy to revert back to stock in case you need to for warranty purposes.
And for the guy asking about CM10 just try it out and see if you like it or head to the CM10 thread and read up on it. You'll lose most of the touchwiz features but there are some other roms based off touchwiz

It's a backup of your entire phone that you can restore anytime. If you flash cm and don't like it, you can restore to whatever you had before without losing any of your data. It'll be exactly the way it was before you flashed cm.

It's like your phone's serial #. If your phone gets stolen or something your service provider can block it from being used on their network thanks to the imei. Unfortunately it can get reset to 0 due to some minor bug that the SIII's have. If it gets set to 0 you wont be able to connect to tmobile's network. Luckily if that happens you can fix it by following the instructions on that thread. It's happened to me once and I was able to restore it without any issues.

Pretty rare I guess. It happens randomly so it's always safe to have your imei backed up in case it ever does happen. I've flashed several roms including cyanogenmod without any issues and I've only lost it once randomly but I was able to restore it without any problems
So, I own a Galaxy Nexus and was dismayed to find I am unable to get Kitkat because the phone has been in production for over 18 months. Knowing I will never get Kitkat from the actual source, I thought there might be another way. I found the post with the general directions and the download for the ROM for Kitkat. Now, I've never done anything like that before, and so I don't know a lot of the terminology that goes into it. I was hoping an easier to understand set of directions could be given to those who don't have any knowledge of this type of thing. Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty tech savvy, but I don't want to mess up my phone by assuming something. Hopefully someone will be understanding and might be able to help a girl out. Thanks!
Have you ever rooted/unlocked the device before? If you have, it's as easy as downloading the zip and corresponding GApps and flashing them in that order. I'm currently running the omniMetal build from 02/22 and it's fantastic when paired with the DirtyV 03/05 kernel.
If you haven't rooted/unlocked yet, there are great guides over in the Galaxy Nexus forums that can walk you through that process first.
Either way, KitKat makes the GNex feel like a totally new device and a pleasure to use.
Edit: Which version of the GNex do you have, Verizon, Sprint, or GSM?

My providor is Verizon. And unfortunately, no, I've never unlocked a device before. I just worry about doing something wrong and breaking my phone. I can't go back to my s1! I also don't have $800 for a new phone. If you don't mind explaining... what is a GAPP? Thanks!
Check this thread out for the rooting/unlocking process. As a word of caution, unlocking the device performs a factory reset on the phone so make sure you have a backup.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2208865
Once you've rooted and unlocked the phone, I would suggest grabbing ROM Manager and flashing the latest recovery through there. You'll need a custom recovery to flash a ROM. Then head over to the OmniMetal thread in the VZW Gnex forum and follow the instructions on the first page to get the ROM and suggested GApps.
GApps are the Google apps (I.e. Play store) that don't come preloaded with most ROMs. You'll need these to access the Market.

Hello all. I am new to the N7. I look forward to trying out some of the awesome development in this forum. Before I begin I need to ask some things. I have spent ALL DAY today reading forums and researching this device b4 I begin. But to be honest, I can not spend days reading every post out there and still be a dad here. So I am trying to stream line this some. I am not a newbie in rooting / roming. Sorry if I have not seen a topic like this b4 posting. There are just so many in this forum now to go through. I will delete this one once helped if nessary. Also THANK YOU VERY MUCH in advance for any help I get here.
1. I have a Verizon note 2, Verizon PERMANENTLY locked the bootloaders on their phones so development has stoped/ slowed drastically. I know the N7 has a locked bootloader that can be unlocked. Is this still true on a stock 5.1.1 lollipop version? or Is there a step to reflash to an older rom I should do first?
2. I see the wugs toolkit out there and a nexus toolkit. Is there any reason to use one over the other? Are either of these working on my STOCK 5.1.1 rom still?
3. Can someone please run down the steps to achieve UNLOCK, ROOT, AND CUSTOM RECOVERY? I seen how wugs does all that in it's program. So if that is the way than a good link to use Please.
Once again. Thanks in advance for your help here. Please also feel free to add in here anything I need to be aware of b4 I begin making my N7 a beast of a tablet. I can not wait to try out some of the awesome roms and mods I have seen so far.
:thumbup::beer::thumbup::beer::thumbup::beer::thumbup::beer:
To root or not to root? That is the question.
1. It's unlockable
2. No need for a toolkit just use fastboot, unless you don't want to know what you're doing. It's in the platform-tools folder of the android sdk. There are many guides on xda about how to use it. Don't forget to install googles usb driver.
3. Very easy. Boot the tablet to the bootloader by holding volume down and power while turned off.
Plug into the computer and open a command prompt in whatever folder you have fastboot and type fastboot oem unlock and hit enter. Follow the steps on the tablet.
For recovery download the recovery .img you want and put it in the fastboot folder. Type fastboot flash recovery whatevername.img
To root just download the su zip from here and flash it through recovery.
You need to be careful you don't have a new Nexus 7 version which doesn't allow the mounting of any of the partitions in a custom recovery. I have one of these new Nexus 7s and no matter what I do I can't get the recovery to work, there's a thread about it.

I can't resolve it and am stuck on stock at the moment which is annoying as I bought it to mess about with Roms and kernels. I'm not sure how you identify which tablets are affected but it seems the later manufactured ones are.
