Could someone explain to me how the hardware in the m8 works for NFC. Like what would cause NFC to not be able to get enabled after taking apart the phone.

I took the phone apart and replaced the main camera module, the battery, and the microusb board.
In the process I broke off the copper piece at the top of the phone that touches the case. That piece is used for the GPS and the compass, so now I can't get a GPS lock nor does the compass move.
I don't think that the NFC is controlled by that piece and even if it were I think NFC would be able to turn on but not work. I've checked all the wires and they appear to be plugged in... I think

So look at your rear housing. You'll see the NFC patch around where the main camera peeks through. There are a few copper contacts, which should line up with their counterparts on your mainboard. When I ordered a replacement rear housing, it came without the NFC patch, so I grafted it from my old rear housing. I never managed to get it to make contact, so my NFC doesn't work anymore. I wonder if anyone figured out a way to do this.

How does NFC function on yours though, does it try to turn on but goes back to the off position?
There has to be an answer somewhere.....

That's exactly how it currently is.
A solution would probably be taping the NFC patch onto the motherboard, and letting the sticky bit find its place on the housing once you seal the device. The difficult part is doing this while ensuring the power button is in place (they always fall out of place during reassembly), and not smudging your camera lens.
I might try this if I do another housing replacement. For now, dis-assembly is a hassle that I don't really need and NFC is something I can live without. I also don't have a spare housing or front panels to use if something gets dented during dis-assembly, so I'm not going down that road for now.
If you do try the above, please let me know what happens.
Cheers.

So on my 3rd Lumia 900, I noticed the sim slot tray wasn't flush with phone... I never did get that fixed but whatever...
Anyways... I removed the tray and noticed 2 things 1) a stricker with some numbers, and 2) a second sticker that is actually used to mask some type of button or something. I didn't notice this on the first 2 devices I had (maybe they didn't have it, or maybe I didn't notice). I had to remove the plastic thick sticker on the right side to see the button or whatever it is... Took me forever to put it back on in place properly.
Anyone know what this is?
IIRC, it covers the slot that allows you remove the locking pin that retains the screen, so you can get inside the phone. You can use the SIM removal tool as a lever to remove the pin, then use a plastic pry tool to remove the screen.
This will void your warranty.
DONT TOUCH IT!!!
if you absolutely must touch it, be aware that your warranty is at stake. if you aren't familiar with the inner workings of a handset, its best to leave it alone.
You wouldn't start poking around inside of your TV if you found a small hole.

Better not touch it than hahaha
Thanks guys, by removing that little sticker thing though, that wouldn't affect warranty would it? I didn't touch anything below it..
That's cool they made it easily serviceable though!

Actually.....it could void your warrently....if they checked that. Removing stickers on a handset is usually an indicator of a stay away area near hear...stay away.....
When they swapped by phone last week because of the vibrator....they definitely opened the sim slot and looked in...I had no idea why....but I do now.

Removing the sticker is what lets them know that you voided the warranty.

Some stickers....whenyou remove them....say VOID VOID VOID. All you can say is OPPS OPS OPS OPS...because the they are 1 way stickers...usually....won't go back on.
Want to know whats under the sticker....go to YouTube and find the break down video....
Weird,
I removed the sticker a few times to look in, until finally posting this, each time I was able to put it back. It's NOT one of those tamper proof stickers, it just covers that hole...

This thread did make me go look. got the flash light out, the reading glasses, I'm looking inside there....and boom....I see the darn this right on the top. First glance....this is a "You void your warrenty" type of sticker. But thats my opinion. The one of the Dell Venue Pro was black and barely noticable...until you pull it back and it left its surprise.....but then you were looking for the SD card....
Strange...but cool to know.
I have to admit, the same day the YouTube video came up showing how to dismantle the phone, I went ahead and did it. It's pretty slick the way it's held together.
I wanted to see how the Vibrator Motor was installed to see if there was a good reason for the rattle and possibly a fix. Unfortunately, it's under the Main Board, and I was not that enthusiastic, so never got to see it. But I can confirm it's the Motor, or something close to it, and NOT the camera lense. I ran the vibrator while the phone was open so I could find the source. Again, it's under the Main Board, so could not see the actual rattle source.
I'm wondering if it might be one of the metal plates that clip on to cover the IC Chips, thus the different rattle on different phones. All the other parts seem to be solidly mounted.
PS: From what I can tell, there's no sign that the sticker had been lifted after I put it back in place.

I might do this when its out of warranty.... too knew yet to blow that!
Finally managed to get my hands on a S4 for a good price off of ebay.
Sadly though, got the phone and the volume button is super loose
However, when doing a little more research, while I haven't found anything specific, it looks like it could be a pretty easy fix simply by replacing the mid frame of the phone.
I just wanted to see if anyone happened to have already tried taking their phone apart and find out if my research is correct.
Also I was curious to see if anyone knows whether or not buttons come with the midframe or not. I've seen a lot of people selling the midframe on ebay but I can't tell whether or not buttons come with them.
Thanks!

The s4 is fairly easy to take apart and replace just about every component except for the lcd/digitizer. The lcd/digitizer is directly double-sided taped down to the midframe(bka front housing) and I have yet to find or see any instructions on removing the digitizer from one front housing to another(and from the videos I did watch, it seems impossible to do). The front housing does come with the volume/power buttons attached but just make sure that the actual switches on the motherboard are not damaged.

hmmmm... are you sure? Maybe we're talking bout 2 different things because, for instance, in the IFixIt teardown it looks like only the speaker is attached the front housing.
For reference I was talking about this part

That's the rear housing and it's very easy to change! Yes, that rear housing does come with the volume/power buttons. I mistakenly said the front housing comes with the volume buttons but it is the rear housing.

Hi I broke my screen and ordered a replacement on ebay (I'd tried the ASUS service centre previously and they were (a) expecsive and (b) really really slow)
I followed the guide here http://www.fixez.com/guides/tablets/asus-google-nexus-7-2013-repair-guides-videos and the disassembly went well, however my screen didn't come with the double sided tape. Does anyone have and recommendations on what to use?
I replaced the screen on my n7 2013 yesterday. I was aware that the new screen came without adhesive, so i ordered this from ebay.
Search for -> 3M 300LSE
One sheet of 10x20 cm is enough. 0.17mm thickness.
I just measured up everything and cut the adhesive to the correct sizes with a scissor.
Just make shure you don't put adhesive over the notification light and camera / sensor on the frame.
Cheers, I ended up just buying some 3M double sided tape, it seems to have worked ok so far. Only problem I've got is that I damaged the wifi lead and need to fix/solder that.
I'm in the UK and have a broken screen, where are you guys buying the parts from?
I'm presuming you're getting the glass and digitiser as one assembly ?
I got mine on ebay and yes, glass digitizer and lcd in one piece, they are really bonded together.
My only issue is that my wi-fi reception is really bad now, I'm trying to work out what I've done wrong.
Did you guys find a decent replacement? I'm trying to find a oem one personally without luck.

When the back case is off and the tablet is lying on its screen there are 2 leads I managed to pull the wire out of the clip on the one on the left, I'm assuming it's the wifi one as that's the problem I've got. It's such a fiddly thing to put back together and so small I'm not sure I'm up for soldering it, but I'll give it a try. I've got a good 4G connection so it's not so bad not having WiFi, but I'd like to fix it for streaming videos at home.

The only wires on the back is for the speakers. The 4 golden contacts are for wireless charging. I don't think there are any wires for the wifi antenna.
But i don't have the LTE version so i don't know if that's different.

Right, turns out it is see the wifi version from ifixit and a picture of mine. I ended up swapping the left (broken) wire for the right one and wifi works, so it's definately wifi. the board says con1102 for the wifi one and con1101 for the other one, whatever that is. but with wifi fixed I'm pretty happy.
Where is the NFC antenna? Couldn't tell from the ifixit

From the Q&A that I cannot find anymore -and if my memory is correct- it is near to the camera
The literature included in the box circles the camera hump on the back and labels that "NFC." Assuming I'm not missing something, that means the NFC antenna is with the camera.

Absolutely spot on, it can be seen on the teardown images as well, it's a black sticker essentially with copper tracks, it isn't symmetrical around the camera area but that probably isn't noticeable in use.

Hmm, this might make it tricky when trying to use the fingerprint scanner to authorise and HFC transaction as your hand might be in the way as you are trying to bump the phone onto the NFC reader. Guess we will see when people use Android Pay.
You don't have to be exactly on top of something to get NFC to work. Generally an inch away is enough.

I recently ran across the same issue others were having with the back and front camera not launching after update. I did not believe it was hardware myself.
However, being a computer technician every test i ran pointed to hardware. So i dug into ny phone here is what i found.
I pulled my phone appart pulled out battery and mother board. Where the camera eletric ribbons connect to the back of the motherboard the ribbon clamp becomes loose after time, not enough to fully dislodge the ribbon but for it to become slanted causing the camera to be electronically active thusly causing the in use by other program error and black screen. Easy fix takes about 15 minutes a small screw driver and electronic tweezers
If you have been having this issue i hope this helps its a free reolution to the ze5511ml

Did you happen to have pics of the disassembly?
I did not take pics, however if you google "asus zenphone 2 disassembly" there are a couple videos that explain the process quite simply. My biggest tip would be to make sure you plug in everything exactly how it was when you dissasembled i forgot to plug in my touch screen when i first attempted so i had to go back and find the ribbon also the ribbon clamps ar white make sure you dont lift up the brown part or you will break your clamps

Just re-seated the camera ribbon on my ZenFone 2 and it worked for me! Front shows up blank, so I'm wondering if the front camera itself is fried... May try to pick up a front camera module for it cheap.

There is a separate ribbon for front facing.
Oh, I know. It just didn't work for me, and I managed to crack the front camera clip on the board... So, I rigged up some foam tape against the back of the screen to give it pressure, but that still didn't do it. It may be the module itself.
