Compatible Non-Verizon carriers? - Verizon HTC One (M9)

I'm thinking about taking my Verizon HTC One M9 to another MNVO that leases Verizon space. Has anyone had any luck doing this? I'm specifically looking at carriers like Straight Talk or Total Wireless that claim to specifically sublease off Verizon, but their sites won't tell me exactly what kind of service I can expect to get if I bring my phone over. For instance, Ting tells me that my phone would only run on their 2G GSM network, so that wouldn't be worth it.
I've also tried willmyphonework.net to test the Verizon HTC One M9 against several carriers, but I haven't found one yet in my area that seems to be fully compatible. Straight Talk shows a yellow check mark on the 3G and 4G LTE networks, indicating that it might work, Total Wireless shows a blue check on 3G but an X on LTE, and Cricket has a blue on 3G but a yellow on LTE.
Anyone have any experience moving to a MNVO with this phone? Who did you end up using?

I use mine on StraightTalk. I live around the Birmingham, AL area and if I'm in a Verizon LTE service area, I get LTE on StraightTalk as well. 3G also works when not around LTE, but anything below 3G is questionable. Some areas I'll see 1X as my service (not sure what exactly it is but I assume 2G?) and obviously data doesn't work. It's not that it's too slow, it just doesn't work at all. Also, with StraightTalk, although you are supposed to get unlimited data, you only get 5GB of high speed data per month, and after that it drops you down to 2G. I haven't tried any other phone, but I know the M9, once you hit 5GB, your data is pretty much shut off. I've tried different APN settings to force it to use 2G with no luck. It just shows connected to 4G/LTE or 3G. I can't force it to use 1X no matter where I am unless that's the only connection available.
I would assume Net10 would work as well seeing as how Net10 and StraightTalk are the same thing.

[Q] G2 on AT&T?

Hey guys, new to Android and T-Mobile. I got a G2 last week, and I live and work in kind of a fringe area for T-Mo coverage. AT&T has good coverage out here, but the G2 doesn't roam over to ATT, I can't even register on their system when I select it in the mobile networks settings. My question is- how can I set the phone to roam onto their system when I lose T-Mo coverage? (I have heard that T-Mo can roam to ATT on EDGE). Thanks!
As far as I know, the only way to use AT&T on the G2 would be to SIM unlock the phone and use an AT&T SIM with an AT&T account. The TMO SIM won't just allow you to roam because they don't have a reciprocal billing agreement --- though I am no expert on this.
I believe, though I could be wrong, that the G2 does not have the ability for 3G (UMTS) data on AT&T. As you stated, if you could connect to the network, Edge should work.
One solution would be to switch to an AT&T SIM and use the Samsung Vibrant, which has the ability to connect to one of the two AT&T 3G bands. Of course, if you want to use AT&T regularly, getting an AT&T phone would be a better solution. So, for you, unless you want to switch to AT&T, wifi might be your only solution.
Ugh! That is exactly what I was hoping I wouldn't read lol. Well, I do really want to stick with tmo, just wish my phone would auto roam to att when I lose the tmo signal. Thanks for the reply!

I asked around at work a bit, and there are cases where you can roam on AT&T's network. These cases exist in areas where T-Mobile has not, cannot, or will not build out a network. In these cases, they contract with AT&T to provide their customers with network access. Some phones will show roaming, but I think the software, at this point, has made it a seamless experience, and you don't even know you are attached to AT&T's network. For billing, purposes, if you have a national plan, you are not roaming.
This doesn't help you, but I wanted to clarify my blanket statement above.
Check out the coverage map (Select NO for Are you a Rep, then go to the Data Coverage Map):
compass(DOT)t-mobile(DOT)com
Unfortunately in your area of CA, there is no roaming partner.
The only roaming in CA is in some parts of N. CA up Hwy 1 and 101, towards the Oregon border, and in the 395 corridor.
I'm thinking of upgrading from my HTC Rhodium on ATT to a Desire Z (also on ATT). Is there anything I should be looking for to make sure it will play nice with the 3G network?
Thanks

Ubergizmo on Nokia Lumia 900 4G/3G/Edge switch

Has anyone else found the following web site with instructions on setting up a 4G/3G/Edge switch on the Web
(Do a search to find the link)
I tired it and was able to get the switch, but I have not been able to try it on 4G(LTE) yet as I do not have LTE reception where I live and only have 3G (the phone says 4G, but I know it is 3G+) but will try it at work tomorrow where I can actually get LTE.
But one thing I noticed is that I cannot get EDGE service where I live. I heard that AT&T wanted to get rid of 2G (EDGE). Have they done that already?
Hre is the link:

Im not sure what you mean about trying it on 4G... the only choices are 4G (LTE) 3G or edge so you get one of the 3.
In my LTE market when I choose 4G I get LTE.

On AT&T, there are 4 types of data. 2G/EDGE, 3G, "4G"/3G+/HSPA+ and LTE.
We all know about 2g and 3g, but many people like you don't know about the difference between "4g" and LTE.
This whole thing was started by T-Mobile, because this was the early days of LTE, and Sprint was advertising it's WiMax network as 4G, T-Mobile decided to use a technology called HSPA+ and brand it as 4G. Initially, AT&T scolded T-Mobile for this move, but as soon as it was decided HSPA+ could be considered 4G, AT&T rapidly built up a network of this, almost as large as their 3G network.
HSPA+ is basically a faster version of 3G, hence why it's often called 3G+. However, AT&T tries to advertise it as 4G so they can boast they have the largest 4G network, even though Verizon leads the charge with the most LTE sites. HSPA+ is a bit faster than 3G, but doesn't hold a candle to LTE. However, it does have it advantages, such as being compatible on the iPhone 4S, and unlike Verizon, on AT&T, if you loose LTE coverage, you can fall back on HSPA+, where as on Verizon you fall back on their CDMA network (Which is still slower than AT&T's GSM network).
So over all it's good and leads to faster overall experience, unless of course you're in LTE coverage 24/7, then it doesn't matter that much. My (and others) only problem with this is AT&T branding it as 4G, which tricks consumers.
These days, both AT&T and T-Mobile branded devices display "4G" for *any* UMTS connectivity, instead of 3G/H.
It's lame.
My 900 has this switch in the settings without the need for any hacks
you hit #data# and then hit the ... button at the bottom and set up the toggle between speeds. Then restart the device, go under settings>cellular> select data speed.
With this device's data speed selection, 2G= edge, 3g= HSPA+/UTMS, 4G= LTE. Eventhough ATT modified the registry so that UTMS shows 4G at the top of the device, when you select 3G in the speed selection, you are only making the phone connect to HSPA+/UTMS

Hey, they stole my article that I originally posted on Mobility Digest. (www.mobilitydigest.com). They even took my screen shot. I purposely took that shot when my phone was showing "G". Oh well. Btw, it does work.

Q: Why does my data constantly switch?

I'm on att and my nexus constantly goes from h to e to 3g and all around. It pisses me off. I called att and had a case opened because my phone was on a 3g plan and they can't change it to a 4g hspa + plan because my device is unknown. Is anyone else on att and had this? What did you do?
The phone should always switch back to UMTS (3G) when the data connection is "idle", and only switch to HSPA+ (H) when data is actively transferring. This is a power-saving feature of GSM because UMTS has a much lower power draw than HSPA+. Your phone should not be switching down to EDGE unless you're in a bad coverage area (0-1 bars of 3G, for example).
As far as AT&T not provisioning the plan for HSPA+ "4G", how did you start the account? If it was started with any other non-LTE smartphone, you should be provisioned for HSPA+ already. AT&T does do some weird provisioning and uses APNs often to restrict speeds, but unless you were previously on an LTE plan you should be provisioned just fine for the full speeds.
If you're constantly switching between EDGE and 3G but you're in a good signal area, you may have problems with your SIM. It may be easiest to go into a store to get the SIM replaced, and talk to someone to make sure its provisioned properly for HSPA+. I really hate that AT&T messes with this stuff, it makes it hard to move around the SIM into different devices, a huge feature of being on a GSM carrier.
Try the scotch tape trick, put 1 layer of tape on the non contact side of sim card. There have been issues with sims being too thin by less than .5mm and not making good connection.
If that doesn't work, get a new sim from any att store, it's free.

Thanks so much for the help I'll head into a store and see what the issue really may be.

Pre paid sim card (USA)

Hello ,
I'm heading over to Miami at the end of march to go to umf and would like to get what I guess is a pre paid sim card for my unlocked note 2. I'm looking for what I would call pay as you go , top it up with some minutes and data. Any price guide lines or carrier recommendations for this?
Thanks,
J

I'm also looking into prepaid plans for this phone (gt-n7100, french model). From what I gather, this model will work on AT&T and get hspa+ and it will work on T-mobile and get 2g speeds in most of the country with some (rare) places getting 4-g. You can get straight talk compatible cards designed for phones from either network. The straight-talk AT&T cards have been discontinued, but are still available on ebay for $50ish. There is also a company called net10 that says they support AT&T phones, so you could probably get the hspa+ speeds with them, as well. On straight talk, the data is supposed to be unlimited, but some people are saying AT&T phones get limited to 2GB. On net10, the fine print says something about full-speed data being limited to 1.5GB.
So far, these are the only options I've looked at. I'd be happy to hear about other prepaid sim options in the USA for the GT-n7100.
edit
After some looking around, I see that t-mobile has some project going on where they are "refarming" some of their 2g towers to 1900mhz hspa+. This would allow our phone to operate at better-than-2g speeds. From looking at youtube videos, there's are quite a few people with unlocked phones on t-mobile showing off some pretty good 3g speeds. If you don't happen to be in an area that has been refarmed, you'd be stuck at the 2g speeds. I got ahold of somebody from t-mobile's tech support to ask about which areas have been upgraded so far, and she was a complete idiot. I guess the only way to know if you are in one of the magic areas is to pop in one of their sim cards and see what happens.

Switched to Straight Talk, using TMO SIM, only get EDGE, can I get better data?

Hey guys, I asked awhile back about switching to ST and I've done it. I finally got data working by using a TMO SIM, but I can only get EDGE, no more, no less. Even in relatively large cities in my area that have TMO towers, I only get EDGE. My question is, is there anything I can do to get better data?
I have Verizon LG G4 on Straight Talk Verizon Towers and everything works great! Not sure what your issue is. Only issue I see is when I make a phone call, it drops to 1x always

That's because you're not using Advanced Calling (VoLTE). On Verizon's network, calls always drop to 1X unless you're using Advanced Calling. In the past, most Verizon phones didn't indicate this. They would continue to show whatever data connection the phone had (3G, 4G) even though the call was being done over 1X. Several recent Verizon devices have been more honest about which networks are actually in use, including the G4.
So, what you're experiencing isn't an issue. It's what should be happening.

That's because you're using a Verizon ST SIM, the OP is using a T-Mobile ST SIM. Also, you need to enable Advanced Calling on your account and your phone to use voice and data at the same time over LTE.
To the OP, I have the same problem. When I put my T-Mobile SIM in my VS986 I only get 2G at home, while LTE only works in the older LTE sites that are using band 4 primarily. Most 2G > LTE sites are using band 2, which according to the Verizon spec page this phone supports, but it must not be active as it doesn't work. I've been looking at ways to enable band 2 without any success yet.
To the OP, you added the APN configs for Straight Talk T-Mobile, correct?

I just opened a thread asking about VS986 wcdma bands availability. I was reading LG specs and they say this phone has no 3g, just 2g and LTE. Reading in many other web pages they say this phone has all 4 wcdma bands available. Maybe they are software locked?
I think, I made a mistake buying this phone to be used in a GSM network. Have you checked with Verizon/Tmo rep?

What are your LTE speeds like? I thought about making the switch but then I read that Verizon limits LTE speeds on ST to 5MBPS...Is that true? As it is my 3g+ speeds end up being faster than that most of the time.

I'm getting better than 5Mbps, but definitely shaped/limited bandwidth. If you actually use 10Mbps+ regularly, keep shopping.
