Received April 2016 security update prompt. - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

April 2016 security update patches approx. 86mb.
Can I just restart and install this update on a rooted device with stock ROM? Or is there a procedure one must go through after rooting to install these updates? Thanks

I've always updated manually just to be safe. Vomer that offers the ROM, CleanCore ( not, CleanRom) gives very detailed instructions on how to do so.

There are also a few programs you can install that will do it for you. Here is a couple. Good idea to know how to do it yourself and to have it setup and ready to use.

New device galaxy s6 {root not} or {update & root}

Hey folks I've just now upgraded to this device and have been a dev for write some time now but mostly for HTC. My firmware and kernel are predated may of 2015 so I'd like to get suggestions from users that have had experience with the s6. What I'm looking to do is sim unlock, root, run twrp recovery, and eventually build roms for this device. So where should I start, take the update first, then sim unlock, root, & recovery, or do all of this now before I update my firmware using the ota? I've read that we can access root with 5.0.2 & 5.1.1 but what's your opinion? I would rather not trip my Knox but it's not a deal breaker if I do, since I own my device. Thanks in advance for your input. Oh and I'm not a noob and have read all the threads here. It's just a little confusing where to start since the device has been out a while now. You're all ahead of my game a little bit. Lol

Just do it all now. The 5.1.1 update isnt huge.
Will I just have to flash the updated firmware and rom to get the 5.1.1 if I do it all now?

Just updated today. It is an excellent guide.
Well an update here. The build that came with my device was not listed anywhere as rootable or unlockable. What I did find was info stating to update my device to get a newer version that would be workable. After that update my device still had a version that nobody could do anything with yet. Looks like I'll just have to wait it out or get another device before my 14 days are up.

I have traded my s6 for the note 5. I was hoping to be able to support this device in the future, and still may, but my gf has the s6 now.

noob here, if i install this, can i still get future updates such as security patches? or future versions of marshmallow?
I am still on DOI2...
DOI6 files need to be installed first, right?
I used this procedure to update my Note 5 (insurance claim recently replaced my Note 4) so if you have any questions, I may be able to help. It looks like in order to use this file you'd have to be on firmware ending in 6.
Keep in mind, on the Note 5 there were a couple different updates posted on the server, so this one y'all found may not be the final update.
Also, if you use this via adb, it will wipe everything on the phone.

There needs to be a way to flash back to an official release. I haven't read through the Note 4 threads to see if there is. If there isn't a way to flash back, I wouldn't install this because if this turns out to be not the final OTA, you wouldn't be able to get the latest or future OTAs.

I think you can put this update on SD card and if you adb from SD card will not wipe your phone. On note 5 we did not have this option.

If this is not finale MM version you need to flash back to version you on now. There was no problem flashing back at all on Note 5, so I don't think there will be with Note 4.
For all others I will look for previous updates so you can update up to last official release.

Downgrade from 5.1.1 Lollipop back to 5.0.1 or 4.4.4:
The 5.1.1 “bootloader” is secured, so downgrading from Android 5.1.1 and returning back to Android 5.0.1 and or 4.4.4 is not possible anymore.

EMUI 5 (Nougat) B320 via Firmware Finder!

Hey guys!
I am Vivek from Ahmedabad, India. I am writing this just to let you all know about my recent experience with FF!
I bought my 6X (BLN-L22) like 2 months back and couldnt get any official ota even after waiting this long. I tried to contact the EMUI admin in Facebook and they told me that its being pushed to individual devices gradually. Now as promising as it sounds, how long is someone supposed to wait right?
Now, I came across an ocean of unfavorable and negative reviews about FF here in XDA and also in other websites. A lot of people complained about disappearance of updater and app twin along with other apps. While others complained of buggy performance or some other issues with the camera. But what I later found out was that people were trying to jump from an old release to the latest one without patching the previous releases of the full OTA in FF!
Some people had issues while jumping from 301 to 320 and some from 310 to 320. And some had twrp installed so its obv to face random issues anyway. Well, I was in B132 all this time and I didnt know what to patch first. But I read somewhere that my release and B320 were stables ones compared to others. So I backed up every single thing from my phone and took the risk only to see if all the hype about FF was true or not...
And to my surprise, it actually worked!! I simply flashed my phone to B320 from B132 using the proxy method and it all happened within an hour. I am on Nougat (EMUI 5) now and its super smooth. I have all the new features like App twin and box based push notifications. I even have the updater file which many complained of vanishing after flashing. It all worked just fine!
I was given a little inspiration by a guy named Gopi here for trying out the FF after all those crazy reviews. He said "You never know unless you try". And I went for it! haha!
So go ahead folks! B320 through FF is what you need if you dont wish to wait too much for the OTA. Special thanks to the developers of FF for this!
Good luck! :good:
Peace.
I'm legit jealous . Cause in my device (BLL-L22) there is still no full nougat update in it (with the app twin etc). Just wish huawei release it soon

advice needed
So previously if we update manually everyone is facing only minor issues. But the main which some have reported is if you factory reset after the update then then are complaining about missing updater in setting and also some apps like calculator. So I want to know if this still exists. Have you tried factory reset on your phone after update ? Are the apps like updater still present after factory reset? Please help me I am done waiting for ota

No I didnt went for the factory reset. It wasnt necessary anyway. I simply updated from B132 to B320 via FF and within 15 mins, the whole update was installed. I got App Twin, Updater and a lot of other new features. I didnt faced any bug so far. Been using EMUI 5 since 3 days now. Dont wait for OTA if you dont wish to. Just upgrade via FF buddy. Good luck!

Nice! I'll have to flash back to stock to see if I can grab the OTA. Also post a screenshot of the "about device" screen once your OTA finishes.

Yeah.. I should have shared that I'm on at&t.
Only took two months for this one.. I'm hoping to see Oreo soon. Seems like it's been rolling out on other Motorola devices from the same generation. I'm really hoping for improved memory management.
Everything else on this device is awesome to me.. except GPS. I don't really understand why it has so much trouble until I start moving for a little bit. Never had issues with any other phone I've owned

Oh... So this means we'll have to wait more for oreo, or may this be a "preparation" for oreo? What does this update brings? I don't have any stability issues..
Well it would make sense to have most devices on the same firmware for a seamless OREO upgrade...

You can update to Oreo without changing the bootloader version. Oreo has been out for a while and most carriers, except Sprint, upgraded to it while still using b4.
The bootloader is basically a security measure to prevent unauthorized use of the phone like modding or changing roms. B8 isn't rootable, so if that matters to you, don't update. For Sprint users on b5,6,7 this allows the Unlocked firmware to be installed again.
Most people will just see it as another update, but most of the XDA community see it as a gift for updated Sprint phones or avoid like the plague for others because of root and flexibility.
