[Q] $349 Galaxy Nexus or wait for new Nexus Phone?

Let's start with what would be my dream phone:
- minimum 4.65 inch screen, preferably not Pentile display, but not a dealbreaker
- 64 GB internal memory (iphone does it, why not android phones?)
- Micro SD slot capable of additional 64 GB (or 128! even better!)
- Tegra 3+ or Exynos 5450 (no, NOT the dual-core 5250, i want the beast quad-core 5450 on the new ARMv15 architecture)
OK story time:
My AT&T upgrade's coming up next month, which means I can FINALLY get rid of the iPhone 4 32GB. Say what you will, but it was a good upgrade coming from a very old Blackberry Curve, and she served me well these past two years, but I've outgrown Apple and its walled garden a year ago.
Here's the thing, I've been disappointed with the recent releases on AT&T, here's why:
1) Samsung Galaxy SIII - no 32 GB version, Touchwiz, snapdragon processor, slow to update
2) HTC One X - no Micro SD card, Sense (although I hear it's great), Beats overrated, same snapdragon processor
3) Samsung Galaxy Note - Y U NO HAVE ICS YET?!... also, i don't need a phablet since i have a Tab 10.1 and the upcoming Nexus 7, so a smaller display would be ideal.
*-- Yes, I'm aware I can root/flash custom ROMS which would deal with the update & custom skin issue, and I do have CM9 on my 10.1, but I'm looking to move to a phone similar to a Nexus, that offers the pure Google experience. --*
On that note, yes, I just sprung for the Nexus 7, and that's made me seriously consider the Galaxy Nexus with its reduced price, pure Google experience, and it updates software way faster than carriers do. The thing is, I'm not a huge fan of some things about the GNex:
Galaxy Nexus Unlocked Negatives (in my opinion):
1) The dated hardware (Texas OMAP processor, which disappointed me even at the press release),
2) smaller HDD (only 16 gb, not fun to downgrade, even if I am coming from Apple),
3) lack of Micro SD (I use Google Music and have about 30 GB of music on it, but I like using the offline feature so I don't constantly have to stream and abuse my data plan, and that requires more space than the GNex is offering).
That $349 price point is just SO intriguing though, and I am an avid user of Google content and purchase regularly through the play store, so I will absolutely be getting an android phone, the question is when.
So thoughts? If you were in a similar situation, would you just spring for the GNex now with that $349 unlocked goodness, or wait for a potential new Nexus phone to be introduced around the holidays? Something's gotta compete with the iPhone 5, right?

Here's my plan. I already use a GNex as a daily driver and I plan on picking up another to do modding/hacking on. Then, when the new Nexus device(s) arrives I am going to sell my daily driver GNex and buy a new one to use. I will keep my "testing" GNex as it will be more than capable a year from now.
But to put it into perspective to your situation, I would just wait if you don't have the luxury of having two phones. Technically, I really can't afford two phones but I have given up drinking, smoking, and sugary drinks to compensate for my "Tech" addiction. Or you could just spring for the GNex now for the lower price point and wait until the new Nexus has a price reduction before moving on. I guess it's all about patience and prioritizing your wants/needs.

I have a GNEX a very early adapter and I paid almost $700.00 so at $349.00 it's a steal. With that said you can always get an International version of the SG SIII and if you don't like touchwiz just root it and install a custom rom. It's very easy to do.

I love the idea of the GNex, and 4.1 will probably be amazing on it, but if a newer, better phone is expected to come out for the holidays and I can use my upgrade subsidy to get it for about $299, then that would be perfect (no plans on leaving AT&T at the moment, I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan, and I'll be damned if they take that away from me).
Sure, I could buy it, then sell it later, but do I essentially want to rent the phone for a few months and lose at least $100 in the process?
I could always keep it as a backup phone, perhaps as a testing phone as you mentioned. But is the GNex worth it? If you have a large amount of media as I do, won't your data plan suffer because you'll always have to stream it?
I can see how the GNex would be useful if I ever decided to buy a Nexus Q (God knows why I'd do that now, needs GTV baked into it). Have it as a backup remote perhaps. Hmmm.....

SGSIII International I don't believe works well with AT&T, right? Even if it does, it's extremely expensive ($500 range last I checked). I'm trying to stick to about $350 tops (aka GNex is the most I'd pay for a phone).
Already spoke about rooting & custom ROMs. I'm really feeling the idea of the pure google experience right now, so it's Nexus or bust, I think (pending better arguments from more experienced board members)

Just ordered one for my buddy since the price is awesome.

Here's a Pro/Con list I'm coming up with. Remember, this is me coming off an Apple phone, so a lot of stuff y'all are used to, I'm not.
Pros:
- Would get cheap, using eBay Instant Sale promotion, I'd get $300 for the iPhone (it's pristine, been in an otterbox since unboxing. Even the otterbox is in good condition!)
- Access to all Google content I've purchased, and continue to purchase
- Jelly Bean
- Pure Google Experience I'm currently looking for (a la Nexus 7, which I purchased)
- Much faster updates than if I bought through a carrier
- Turn-by-Turn Nav
- Price for no-contract phone would be roughly the same if I was upgrading to a new phone with AT&T (If I recall correctly, I got my 32 GB iPhone for $299)
- Buying the phone means I still keep my upgrade eligibility for AT&T
- Can always have as a back-up phone, or as a back-up remote for Nexus Q if I ever purchase something like that
- Much larger display than what I'm used to, and the display is still one of the top 3 in the market currently, hands down.
- I can live without a new phone for a while, which means I can wait for some crazy beast phone.
Cons:
- Need to buy a new FM Radio adapter (2005 accord = no aux port)
- Smaller Storage (32GB iphone vs 16GB GNex)
- No Micro SD slot
- Not quad-core (yes, I'm aware of the "dual-core just as good" argument, and I don't care. Blame it on my testicular insecurity, whatever you want lol)
- Could become outdated soon by potentially newer Nexus model or new Samsung/HTC/ASUS phones coming out in the holidays (just 6 months away)
- The no-contract thing doesn't give me any benefit, as I have a grandfathered AT&T unlimited data plan with no desire to lose it
I'll add more stuff as I think of it, or as people mention in subsequent posts.

Variables, exactly. I don't even buy phones on contract anymore so I don't even think about that aspect.
As for media content, using a phone without expandable storage just takes extra preparation, which I don't mind. I switch out playlists and things like that weekly when I'm around WiFi.

I'm about 90% set on getting the GNex, just want to do some last minute fact checking and really make sure I'm ready to do this.
What changed my mind??
I recently found out about Ebay's Instant Sell promotion. To celebrate the GS3 release, Ebay's buying the iPhone 4 32GB for $300. Mine's in pristine condition due to being in an otterbox for the entirety of its life, I even have the original iPhone 4 box it came in.
I'd still have the upgrade feature for phones that come out next year, and it holds me over till my true superphone comes out. I'm so close to buying it lol, just want to make sure I'm making the right decision haha

Well, I'm not going to tell you what to do, that's a decision you'll have to make. But I will say this, I was using the HTC One X before the GNex and I'm getting ready to sell the One X so I can have the second GNex, if that tells you anything. Of course, that's me and everyone is different. Good luck in making your decision.

At $399 when I bought it last month, it was a screaming deal. I have absolutely no regrets, I was originally waiting for the GS3 and considered the One S.

Won't I need a SIM card adapter?
Optional questions that don't belong here:
1) any ideas on FM Radio transmitters? (I have an 05 Accord, no AUX input unfortunately).
2) Should I get a case? Dropping phones freaks me out, especially since I have tile in the house
3) Any other accessory recommendations? Micro-USB preferred, as they will then work with the Nexus 7

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but I'm also looking into getting a Nexus, and I have a few questions:
How common is the banding/burn-in problem? (I don't leave static images on the screen for long, but I'm worried about this because a lot of people seem to be complaining about it and saying it happens in only 3 days)
How is the multitouch , as in, does it track your fingers well, and how many fingers max? (I'm asking cause the android phone I'm on now has major issues with multitouch)
Do most 3D games run smooth? (max payne, gta, nova, spiderman, etc...)
What are your personal gripes with the phone?
I really appreciate you answers, sorry if I'm asking too much, I just want to be sure about buying, $350 seems "too good to be true" for a phone this good lol.

About ready to ditch Samsung...(darn it)

My current phone is a Note 4. I've been a Sammy user since Galaxy was introduced (started with Captivate, as I"m on AT&T.)
So, interestingly, I"m not very happy with the Note 4:
AT&T issue - Not rootable. (I don't care any longer for custom ROMS, but miss some capabilities that root offers)
I have several little crazy issues, but 2 main ones are: Google voice prompt speaker whistles with feedback when first say 'OK Google' (Got a replacement and same issue on it); Can't get any app to consistently read texts over BT while driving.
I think the bloatware is causing some performance problems for me. I have disabled several and it did help.
I have a LOT of apps installed. Always have. Counting bloatware that may not be disabled, I have around 150.
Oh, also, I have lots of problems with Pandora on this phone. When the accessory is launched from my car, often it fails. When I play Pandora app, it often quits playing if it is not the front/active app. Very annoying.
If multitasking, it definitely has strong lags.
So I was thinking that the Note 5 would be my final phone for a while (actually thought that about this one). But I read that the 4GB is half used up on initial boot. So, I'm thinking I need to move to something less bloated. I don't have any confidence that the Note 5 would be rootable, I did have confidence that it would be eventually on the Note 4...but it's taking a long time.
Given my large app list, I'm thinking thatI should not settle for less than 4GB . Less bloat may help that issue...look at a pure Android experience maybe. (Of course chasing that via a custom ROM may be an alternative...but we know the status of that on the Note 4. Plus, in the past I've tried a lot of different ROMS, including popular 'stable' ones, and they ALL have bugs.)
I'm hoping to get something that works much better hands free. Haven't had much luck with that with any of my Android phones. I had much better luck with that way back when I was on Microsoft's phone OS, before Windows phone...with Microsoft's Voice Command.

Thinking of switching to Tmobile. Trade in the Note 4 for a Moto X style. Great specs for $399. It'll be easy to pay off. Service monthly payments will be cheaper then att.
But I've invested money in a gear vr and cases. Still deciding and looking at other devices.
Also most Samsung phones on Tmobile are or at most times get root.

I actually considered purchasing a TMobile one when I got this one. Could still sell/change...but I've lost confidence in the Samsung brand working. I hear good things about the Moto phones. I'm considering the Pure...but given my penchant for a lot of apps (none of them games), I'm thinking I need 4 GB RAM.
I don't want to change to TMobile due to less coverage. I have considered moving to Verizon to bet better data speed in my area (St. Augustine, FL), but they would cost me more than AT&T, and I'm not sure I would get better data speeds.

Sounds pretty much for sure it won't have the SD. But even if it does, in my case, I'm just ready to move away from Samsung. Of course, I could find I have as much trouble getting what I want it to do with any of them.
I checked on the Moto site, and it says we can test for 14 days and return for free if not happy. I may just give that a whirl.

There is no expandable memory on the Note 5

I used the note 5, it's the same memory as the s6, you shouldn't be surprised. And you should have no hope for root or an unlock on any att or verizon phone. Seriously, you all know what to expect, but the phone from tmobile or the international version.

No surprise to me. That's part of why I'm ditching Samsung. Maybe my posts haven't been quite clear about that though.

I feel you big time. I also love big ole sammy, but bloat is a huge problem. I have been using the GS6 edge for the last week and I will say I love it. My note 4 is sooooo sssluuggish. Its gets frustrating. I also have a lot of app.s. Maybe that is the problem. I got this to be my everyday device. A phablet. But I am really leaning the direction of just having my nexus for reading/gaming and a phone for social. That has really been working for me this past week. The GS6 Edge is very snappy and the less bloat on these new phones help a lot. I aloso disabled a bunch and put on nova on and call me speedy gonzalez because I am flying.

Yep me too! My next phone will definitely have to be the One plus Two or Moto X 2015. It all depends on what I can get my hands on first. I love Samsung, but if I can't have my freedom on what I wanna do with my phone, there's no point of having an android version of an iPhone. Because if those were my only two options, iPhone would be my first choice. I choose Android because of Root, and customization. Not stupid Knox and carriers locking the bootloader crap. I wish I would've kept my jailbroken iPhone if I knew that were the case. So yeah definitely One plus Two, maybe Moto X if it's unlockable and rootable

Since some Notes are locked down and others not,shouldn't everyone's anger be placed on the carrier? Obviously AT&T and Verizon are the ones at fault. If you like the Note series buy unlocked or go for the guaranteed unlocked Nexus. I have both so when I want to mess around I have the Nexus and sometimes it's nice to trade off to the full featured Note. It really is the best way to go and keeps my anger to a minimum. I have to say with the Nexus you never have these back and forth games and you can do whatever you want without worrying about an update locking you out for the long term.

Yup, generate discussion. I think it's been pretty successful at doing that.

May try T-Mobile Note 4 - Root...
Before I abandon Samsung, I may try abandoning the AT&T version of the Note 4.
I haven't been interested in putting on ROMS (did that a lot on previous phones, and I find even for those that are touted as 'solid', there are always one bug or another), but maybe that is what I should do. Been reading on various ROMS over on the T-Mobile forum.
So, if I do this, next I need to decide whether to abandon TW (I do like some of the features...), then if not, whether to install a KitKat or LP ROM. I may try one or both of those options, then if not happy, try AOSP.
Then if not happy, maybe by then there will be reviews out on others I'm considering...although the Nexus has to arrive. From what I'm seeing, it'll be October before that gets out.

My anger is with ATT for being locked down and even more so Samsung. Their greed is borderline criminal IMHO. There is absolutely no reason why the Note 4 and Edge cannot have the updated Touchwiz. Wish I had stuck with my Nexus 6, but only gave up on it because it didn't take advantage of the big screen and Android M took care of that. Been trying to trade my Edge for a G4 or N6 for weeks now.

Still seriously confused why some st**id carriers locked down phones? Should have make some research before trading my trustworthy Note 3 for Note 4 at&t. I don't see this device having unlocked bootloader soon G4 callling

I had faith they would break it and be able to root it. Seems that the developers for Samsung or AT&T is finally getting ahead of our developers and winning that battle.
I no longer have faith the AT&T will get rooted.
In fact, it's starting to feel like the leanings are headed to no root more and more.

Lol also 2nd ur opinion. I gave up on this phone been root able, deal is the phone is fast still so I don't have the need to root lol but I do have a gear s from att?which I would like to one day install a Droid port but sucks is att and locked. Stupid carrier

The locking of bootloaders is to exponentially increase security in order to gain military, government and corporate contracts...which they did. Verizon and AT&T Samsung devices were rated highest in security in today's market. T-Mobile and Sprint chose not to most likely because they do not have the coverage country-wide to encourage those sales.

Leaving my Verizon G4

I decided to sell my Verizon G4 and Iam kinda bummed in doing so. I've had a string of phones leading up to the G4 in which a locked bootloader was not an issue. I first started flahing with my Verizon Fascinate, then I had the Samsung Galaxy 3....then came the LG G3 which impressed me enough to upgrade early and snag the G4. I love the phone but HATE the lack of flashable flavors. So, I purchased the Motorola X Pure and I am looking forward to having more flashing possiblities. It has basically the same specs as the G4. This was a great phone but lesson learned. I will check back here frequently to see if any progress has been made and I wish all you other G4 good luck! Hopefully some exploits will be found to allow more freedom on this great phone but my patience has waned.

Looks like your only options with Verizon will be to get an unlocked Nexus going forward. All Samsungs since S5 are locked, they blocked HTC M9 from HTCDev to unlock, and all the LG since this phone are locked. Verizon knows to get the big contracts they must have the most secure phone. This is not an attack on this community...it is just collateral damage. You can thank malicious hackers and identity thieves for this.

I have always had some interest in Nexus devices but I never pursued purchasing one due to the lack of MicroSD support. I am sure I could manage without it but if I am spending a chunk of money on something I'd prefer that one luxury. The next best thing I could find was the Moto X Pure. All the freedom of a Nexus device plus a MicroSD slot. Oddly enough, I was also tempted to purchase the Nextbit Robin but I prefer a larger screen size. I played with a Galaxy 6 Edge+ phone as well. I think it's a beautiful phone but again, no MicroSD card slot and lacking the flashing freedom of unlocked devices. I am hoping I enjoy the Moto X Pure as much as I think I will. It arrives Monday and I've been reading up on how to unlock and root it. This will be my first Motorola phone since the Flip Razor.....lol.

You know the Samsung 7 has dual SD cards...at least that's what I read

But on Verizon it will still be bootloader locked and no root.

Don't blame ya. Guess I'm limited to paying full price for Nexus phones.

Samsung is only building one version of the S7. It has all the radios. Seems like you could buy an unlocked one and use it on verizon. There was a EU G4 that worked on VZW. Although I can't imagine advanced calling and Video chat working. The Nexus 6 (Moto) was universal too.

Yea looking at the Verizon S6 forums, they are in the same boat. No roms or anything.
The days of custom roms and root are close to being over unless they can find some miracle break through.
Yea so unless you pay full price for international S7 that is unlockable bootloader (still no word if thats the case).
Sucks.

I think people are nuts for buying a $500-800 computing device and having all sorts of bloat, advertising and tracking software installed and forced upon us.

I have an early Samsung Galaxy Nexus (not currently activated) and the LG Vista VS-880 (that replaced it),
which I plan to sell to finance a newer model.
I'd like a Google-free phone & it looks like CM & other custom roms have passed the VS-880 by.
The LG G4 & Moto X Pure Edition appear to be affordable ($240.) used.
May both be loaded with CM (or other Google-free custom rom) in
USA/Verizon models?
I have read some posts that suggest maybe only non-USA models.

In short, the Verizon model cannot be rom'ed. EU and tmobile ones can.

Are there any phones in the same class, and available used around the same $240. price,
that may be rom'd in the USA on Verizon?
OR, maybe just run-out the current data contract then roll-back to a minimalist phone
& carry a small wifi-or-wait Linux or Tizen tablet?

Moto developer edition phone or nexus. Otherwise you have to port a non Verizon phone in. There won't be advanced calling features in these cases.

But, both appear to be 100% root & rom-able & play nicely with Verizon. Yes?
My eyes would benefit from the better display on the LG G4 or the Moto Pure Edition.

Even on stock Roms you may only get HD voice but not video chat with moto or a nexus on vzw. Check on that. Having had tons of moto phones I can tell you that the camera will be the biggest downgrade.

I just left the Verizon G4 because of its many issues. Most won't have problems unless you wireless charge. It burns out after a while. I went though 6 replacements and all burned out after a while. My last G4 also had wireless connection issues where it would connect, disconnect, connect, disconnect in rapid increments until a reboot was performed.
Verizon said it was a known issue, credited my $199 that I spent back in June and I applied it toward a Galaxy S 7 Edge, that also sucks. The beveled screen allows touches from your palm when holding it to type; hitting things like Send and shift at random times. Over the course of the weekend, I sent tons of half completed emails and messages. Also when holding it and enough skin is touching the screen, it stops receiving inputs when typing until you reposition. And if you are normally using it, the edges are less sensitive to prevent "palming". It mostly works but freaks out occasionally and gets more input than it can handle. Also the curve of the screen and usable space (technically the whole screen is usable) makes the screen feel narrow and confined, like a smaller screen.... hard to explain. It just felt smaller compared to the same sized G4. I didn't buy a case yet but a case should help. Screen protectors are going to be a pain too.
I called Verizon and they swapped it out for a 64gb Note 5. It's the physical same size as the G4 with hard buttons to increase screen size to 5.7" but the same physical body. So far it feels like a solid device. The SPen will probably come in handy for my work. The Note 5 feels like the G4, which is what I like.
Since Root and Unlocking is basically dead... it doesn't really matter what device you pick now. I miss the buttons on the back. Physical home button makes up for lack of Double tap to wake. I still use Action Launcher with Double tap to sleep. Wireless Charging on both the S7E and Note 5 are built in.

This thread pretty much confirms what I've been feeling for some time now -- If I want a fully unlocked, rootable, bloat-free phone I have to go with a Nexus.
My Galaxy Nexus was a pretty great little guy back in the day, the only real problems I had with it were battery life. Hopefully newer Nexus phones are a little better there.
Maybe it's also a good idea to start looking into Google Fi.

I have a Google Fi invite that I am pretty sure I can give away if anyone wants it.
As far as the International s7, they are about the same problems as we do, with Qualcomm's secure chain-of-trust and whatnot... They aren't in a better boat, not by much at any rate.
If you want the Moto Nexus 6, Costco has it for a penny on a two year contract.

I used to love modding my phone. I have t had to with my g4. It has M. It has the latest features I want. It has great performance I don't need to push a ROM to optimize anything. Root was nice but I find I haven't really needed that either as cracked apks are available.

In my case I'd prefer to have Borg/SkyNet/google completely out of my phone - so a generic load won't do & Apple isn't an option either.
It's pretty pitiful that no one will make an affordable privacy-respecting phone for use in the USA.

I was considering the S7 but there is practically zero roms for it due to the locked boot loader. I wanted to get some feedback from the community and see if your current experience and thoughts are on the 10.
I love trying out new roms, currently in love with TEKHD roms.
What do you guys like about the phone? Pros and cons. If you could go back, Would you consider the S7 despite the locked bootloader or buy a different phone?
The v20 is out but I am not digging the phone, mainly for the price point. Only reason to consider the S7 and S7 Edge is due to the free 256gb SD Card and 100 bucks in credit from samsung. Oh and lastly, I don't see a HTC 10 for tmobile, is there a reason for that?

I wouldn't get the S7. I had it for 4 months and was not happy with it, even though overall it's a great phone. I would DEF get the HTC 10 over it. The camera on the S7 has slightly more detail than the 10's, but the 10's is more color accurate (as is the screen vs. S7's). The sound quality during calls was not that great on my S7 (locked from T-Mobile). I have the Sony Xperia XP right now and even w/o VoLTE (incl. HD Voice) it still sounds WAY better. The single speaker on the S7 is the worst ever too. I mean it really sux! lol The HTC 10 also has cool features like double tap to wake & sleep, smart call handling/auto answer calls (answer calls by simply picking up phone while it lays flat and lifting it to your ear; no need to swipe screen anymore), etc. The audio technology on the HTC 10 is WAY better b/c they put in more money on it and everyone thinks it sounds the best! I listen to a lot of music on premium headphones, and I know the 10 won't disappoint (I tried it out for a week). If using a digital connection to the S7 for headphone listening, because of a USB driver issue, it will make your music skip like every 3-5 min. I really DON'T miss that! lol
Also, HTC is VERY cool with ppl unlocking its bootloaders. So since you like flashing ROMs, that's another plus with getting a 10.
The HTC 10 is currently on sale 'til next Monday for $150 off. The only down side is they're out of 2 of the 4 colors (available on unlocked models only) until most likely after the sale ends. So right now there's only the black and silver ones available, but both are nice too. I had the One M8 in silver a couple years ago and it was great phone! And they've only gotten better since, though I hope the HTC 11 moves that fingerprint sensor from the front and INTEGRATES it into the side Power button the way Sony does it, and then also move that bottom facing speaker back to its rightful place at the bottom front. We'll see. Still, the 10 is great though.

I called several stores and none of them have it. I know I can go directly to HTC and buy it but I can not afford to pay the full retail price. I was hoping I could finance it through tmobile. ;/ I might just have to stick with my trusty Note 5 or opt for a S7 or S7 Edge which I just found out have practically zero modding community

If you have Amazon Prime like I do, you could sign up for their Amazon Prime Store Card (log in to Amazon to see details). I got it sometime ago, and it lets you pay off any item at or over $149 over 6 mos interest-free, or at/over $599 12 mos interest-free. That's what I'm using now actually to pay off my Sony Xperia X Performance actually. Prices will vary here though and you HAVE to make sure not the get the int'l ones off Amazon b/c 4G LTE doesn't work on them. (Read the descriptions before buying.)
HTC.com DOES have a monthly financing option as well through PayPal. They say you get a $250 line of credit if approved, but when you go through the application process, it appears they raise it to cover the FULL price of the phone. You'll get 6 months to pay it off, interest-free. Select "PayPal Credit" in checkout to see that option on the HTC site.
Both options will require a credit check, which is not a big deal if you haven't recently applied for a credit card or credit of some kind and are in good standing. Even if you have applied once or twice recently, it should be fine. Look at the details of both and then make your decision.

I switched from Note 7 to HTC 10, so far the phone is blazing fast. Haven't experienced any lag of any kind unlike Note 7. When typing on the Note 7 you experience the input lag and you have to uninstall apps in order to make the phone fast. While htc 10 you don't have to delete apps to make the phone fast it's already fast. The only thing i miss from the note is the big screen and Samsung pay. Watching videos on the 10 is good experience especially with the loud speakers. So yeah if you can find the 10 in a store I highly recommend getting it.

I agree with L on the lag. My S7 lagged ALL the time. Funny how a phone with 4 GBs of RAM and an 820 processor is slower to load things up than my Sony Xperia X Performance, which only has 3 GBs of RAM. And yes, all the reviews indicate that both music and call quality is crystal clear on the 10 (which was the same for the previous One series phones by HTC).
I'll admit that Samsung Pay was kinda cool to have, but I'd never stay with Samsung just for that. That's literally the ONLY thing I miss about my S7. lol
Yes check the stores but seriously consider that PayPal Credit option too via the HTC site. That's what I would do. Plus by buying it through their site you get that Uh-Oh Protection, which you WON'T get if you buy it through T-Mobile or even Amazon. And if you don't use Uh-Oh, that's $100 off your next HTC phone, saving you even more money in the future.

I don't have much to add other than I was in your shoes looking to replace my Note 7 and I'm happy I got the HTC 10.

I had a tough decision between the Note 7 and the HTC 10 before I bought my device. It was before we knew they were all catching on fire, so I was seriously considering the Note 7 as well as the 10.
I pay full retail price on my devices, and money is tight so I have to be quite picky. I'm VERY happy that I chose the HTC 10 myself. The sunshine s off process is amazing, and worth every dime, you don't even have to bother with the bootloader unlock basically, if you go s-off, which I recommend in most cases of users (I have a theory for really wreckless people and s off, it's like drunk drivers, just put them in their own lane, they'll eliminate themselves)
For me, I only full with Android and run devices that I can root and flash on, it's my hobby, and kind of like my cars, I won't pay for something I can't tinker with or fix things I don't like, at least have the option.
While the HTC 10 hasn't been the largest device for custom rom quantity as far as development goes, I think the development quality is better than a lot of devices with way more roms available.
If you don't like HTC sense, and enjoy the HTC interface, I'd recommend a different device personally. You can eliminate HTC sense and run nova launcher, but the base of the rom will be HTC.
The kernels available for the device, if you enjoy flashing and tuning custom kernels, are awesome. All of the kernels I've tried from the development section ran really well, so it's not one of those cases where there's only a few options and they all suck, as some other devices have had, all of these rom and kernel developers have done outstanding.
Now for screen size, if you're buying the Note 7 for a huge screen, I would consider if it's going to be a problem that you only have a semi-huge screen. In my opinion, the screen size is perfect, I can reach everything easily and I don't have huge hands, and the fingerprint reader on the front of the HTC 10 is the ONLY fingerprint reader I've ever used consistently because it's the only one that's ever been implemented so well.

My "bootloader unlocking/rooting" days began & ended 2 years ago with my HTC One M8. At first I loved the extra freedom that comes with that world, but after a while I didn't like it so much b/c you have to do everything manually, so when I upgraded to the Sony Xperia Z3 later that year, that era was done with. Still, I got to upgrade my sound on my T-Mobile M8 from BoomSound to the Sprint Harman/Kardon sound using that process to obtain an H/K mod someone had extracted from the Sprint version. It def made a noticeable improvement in sound quality at the time, and I loved it! I too did the S-Off thing too (but not using Sunshine, I found another way that was free) as it was required in addition to unlocking the bootloader and rooting in order to install that mod. So I guess I was wreckless? lol
I feel like HTC is the only brand that not only lets you unlock the bootloader w/o penalty, but actually SUPPORTS the practice too.
Yes, when I had the HTC 10 that one week in June I recall the fingerprint sensor functioning very well too! I HATE phablets, so the HTC 10 is definitely what I'd go with over the Note anything. lol

Unlocked version is GSM; T-Mo and AT&T are GSM. That's the version I have and I use Ting, which uses T-Mo & AT&T.
Unlocked version direct from htc, nice warranty, unlock support, most recent RUUs available for download, $150 off won me over. I like the phone so far (only had it a week).
Wife loves it. We wanted the Note 7 but we also wanted to live. The Pixel, the S7, and the V20 just aren't worth the cost to us.

After that 1 year "Uh-Oh Protection" warranty ends, and you decide you want to keep it beyond the first year, you can do what I did which was get PRIVATE phone insurance for your phone. The 2 best ones are Square Trade and Worth Ave. Group. I went with Worth Ave. Group b/c I liked that they cover thefts too, though not malfunctions. Square Trade is the opposite. But if something goes wrong, just crack the screen and Worth Ave. will replace it anyway. lol And Worth is cheaper too.
Not everyone wants to get a new phone within a year of buying their last one, and not everyone wants or likes a carrier phone, so this is a great option for those people!

In regards to the OP,
If you have the cash to dish out on an unlocked HTC 10 then you will definitely not be disappointed. At this point, HTC is one of the most 'modding friendly' companies left... next to buying a Nexus of course.
But if you don't have the cash i'd recommend getting a refurbished M8. They can be had for $90-$150. My son uses my old M8 now so I keep it updated... currently have S.Team's latest rom. Only areas where my 10 outshines the M8 is the Camera, DAC, & some gaming. In terms of day-to-day performance though, they are identical

Either way, insurance is only beneficial if the phone being replaced is fairly new. I've never tried any private insurance so I can't speak on that. But, you have to meet the deductible (up to $199) to get a phone replaced. You'd be better off using that $199 towards a better phone

Yes, it is only worth doing on a new device. I'll agree with you there.
$199? Maybe if you're insuring from AT&T. My insurer, Worth Ave. Group, only charges $50 for the deductible. And my phone is pretty new (purchased in mid to late June).

Yea, carriers is what I was referring to... AT&T and Verizon specifically. If it appears to be a manufacturer defect both will replace it for free even after the warranty expires. Ironically, Verizon is a little more lenient than AT&T in that aspect. I'm gonna look into Worth Ave. Group though. I skimmed through the link you gave & so far seems like decent way to go.

Ok. Yeah Square Trade won't cover theft, but will cover defective phones, where Worth Ave Group is the opposite. To me, if the phone goes bad, I'll just take a hammer to the screen and be done with it, since Worth DOES cover accidental damage and/or cracked screens. lol
I think Worth offers the best bang for your buck too. Plus they have an A+ rating with the BBB. Not much more you can ask for.

I wish I could give you specific information, but the fact is, that was 2 years ago, and I don't remember exactly what I did or how I did it. I just know that in order to install the Harman/Kardon mod that was exclusive to the Sprint HTC One M8 "Harman/Kardon Special Edition" phones (the M8 phones had all the SAME hardware, but Sprint H/K M8s had this software no other carrier or even HTC's unlocked phones did, until this guy created a mod from that software) onto my T-Mobile One M8, I had to unlock the bootloader, root the phone, AND switch "S-On" to "S-Off". The S-Off part was I THINK the hardest? I just remember it took me a few tries and I was up 'til like 2am one night doing it, but then right there I FINALLY got it, and was able to install the mod (amongst other things, but THAT was my priority). I remember definitely noticing an improvement in the already great sound, and being quite happy with the results. And now Harman/Kardon stereo systems are being put into Mercedes Benz cars. lol
I have no interest in going through all that again though. It was a cool "adventure" for 3-4 months there, but then I got tired and what was fun at first started feeling more like work. You have to maintain everything manually when you unlock the bootloader and/or root I learned, and I stopped enjoying that after a while. Not long after.... the Sony Xperia Z3 finally came out, and so I switched to that after about 6 mos with the M8....... and that (Z3) is arguably the best phone I ever had. I had S7 (Samsung.........mehh lol), the HTC 10 for like a week, and now the Sony Xperia X Performance. But the battery life on my Z3 TRUMPS those newer phones in that arena. I think it's really cool though that HTC is so supportive of and pro-modding. They clearly care more about their customers (esp U.S. customers) than Sony Mobile does. I'm seeing that more and more. As mentioned in my one post in this thread, HTC offers the Uh-Oh Protection Plan (and pays you $100 off your next phone if you don't use it)..........they made sure to activate the fingerprint sensor in the U.S. versions of the 10................they made sure to meet T-Mobile's certification requirements for VoLTE (including HD Voice) & Wi-Fi Calling on their unlocked phones................they release their phones in a TIMELY manner in the U.S......................these are all things Sony Mobile is unwilling to do. So in 2017 I may very well switch back. We'll see.

This phone still worth buying in 2017?

Simple question. I asked the same question on another phone I'm interested in, got some good response, am asking it here.
I need a new phone, battery is getting hinky on my HTC One M8 plus the camera is ca-ca and I need a better camera for my job because I have to use the phone's camera quite often.
Out of principle, I simply don't want to spend more than $350 or so for a phone. Phones within my price range that I'm interested in are an HTC 10 (my last two phones have been HTCs and I've liked them), a Moto X Pure (that's the other phone I asked this question about), a Samsung S7 (all that glass scares me to death, I'm a klutz and the brick-like cases my phones reside in bear that out), Moto G4 Plus or the new Moto G5 Plus (which is having all kinds of issues on the VZW network unless you disable HD calling) — and this one, which really really intrigues me.
I know it's three years old, but I see that there's still a vibrant community supporting it, I've seen people online call it "the best phone Samsung ever made and probably ever will make," and the specs are still righteous compared to newer and flashier phones.
I don't care about new and flashy, my phone is a tool, period, and I need it to work for me.
The Note 4 also apparently is rootable ... I've never owned a non-rooted phone, have never rooted one myself although I've flashed ROMs. (I've got a line on a mint used one running Noble Rom; can anyone tell me about stability of that?)
So after this long-winded drivel, I repeat the question ... this phone still worth buying in 2017?

Depends what you're looking for I guess. If you're looking for a decent phone for around $200, it's decent. Beware the emmc failure error though, these things seem to choke themselves out at either exactly one year or exactly two years after purchase. Not all of them but a large enough percentage that its worth mentioning.
Edit:Also this is anecdotal but I suspect that refurbished note 4s don't have real gorilla glass. I dropped my note 4 easily hundreds of times from around 3 feet, sometimes with some force, with only the s view cover fit a case. The screen never had problems until insurance replaced mine due to failing emmc, then it cracked on the first drop after that.

Note 4 is very rootable including the V variant many active devs for it. Sprint model here and was an amazon purchase. Been rock solid. Many of the others you mentioned are nice as well. Good luck!

I think it is as well . great device lotta development and now I saw they go for $149 new . Will it hang with the Note 8.....no of course it won't it is almost 5 yrs old now but it at 149 unlocked its less than 1/8 th the projected price of the note 8 .

There are lots of reasons to love the Note 4. Replaceable battery, holds up to 256GB micro SD, IR support, big bright screen, rootable with Magisk support, great ROMs from anything from nearly stock to basic 7.11 versions. If you like to use your spen, get a Touchwiz ROM.
I bought my first one on the day of release. Since then, I've bought nine more over the years for friends and family. All (except one) has been rooted and are running newer ROMs. The holdout is my daughter who thinks rooting is bad. Kids, you can't teach them anything ... ugh! However, they are difficult (shall I say tricky) to root, it's well worth it. I bought the N7 when it was released. Had it two weeks. Hated the 'edge' because I would pull that out accidentally, or couldn't close with the X because my finger was right on the edge. I was sorta glad to return it. Needless to say, I bought a refurbished N4 on Amazon and several more since then. My neighbors wanted new phones, but didn't want to pay $600+ for them. I talked them into the N4 and set them up. They love them, but don't use half of the features. Newer phones are slimmer, not as wide, but that never bothered me. The only reason I would want a newer model would be for more RAM, however I like having the extra cash in my pocket, so I'm perfectly happy and will continue with the N4 series as long as I can.

Note 4 well worth the money!
I definitely recommend the note 4 it is an amazing phone best phone i have ever had! You will be very happy if you do decide to purchase im rooted and using twrp and custom rom! I also read a article talking about how people have decided to stick with the note 4 instead of upgrading to note 5 or 7 this is because the note 4 was way ahead of its time because of the harware that is used in it. The phone has a very good processor i highly recommend this phone!

i bought an LGV20 this week, thats going to be sold, and the note 4 will continue to be my daily driver...at least until the note 8 comes out

This phone is spectacular. I have 2. Never any problems at all outside of my own rooting quandaries. Only complaint is front facing cam. I'm not into selfies but if I get decent haircut and I want to remember it or just notate something stupid like my teeth for my own personal use, the front facing cam sucks.

Honestly, the Note 4 is a fine phone, but I wouldn't spend any money on it at this point. This point was a 2014 flagship. I'd spend that money towards a more recent model. You'll really appreciate the newer Snapdragon 820/821/835 over an antiquated 805, which is a quad-core Cortex-A15. It's a fine phone, but your money will take you much further. If you do choose to buy this device regardless, I wouldn't spend more than $150.

I got my Verizon Note 4 about 2.5 years ago and I still like it a lot. I did have the failing motherboard problem, but Samsung fixed it completely for only $70. It's working great now and I'm hoping to keep using the phone for at least another two years.
So, yes, I would certainly consider buying another Note 4 today. The only caution I would take is to make sure I bought a brand new one. Otherwise you are likely going to be buying someone else's phone with a failing, or soon to be failing, motherboard. Perhaps a phone that has been refurbished by a very reputable company could be acceptable (e.g., from Samsung, or Verizon), but I would want to make sure it has a very good warranty (preferably much longer than 90 days). I definitely would not buy a used phone that is being sold as-is (even if the buyer claims it works fine).
I have seen new Note 4 phones advertised on Amazon for about $300. Refurbished phones seem to be going for about $200 (but I think the extra $100 is well worth the cost for a new phone).
I've never rooted my Note 4. It sounds like versions from some carriers are easier to root than others. If you are on Verizon it sounds like it may be rootable, but it is more difficult. I would read the Verizon specific threads on rooting the Note 4 if you intend to buy a phone specifically for rooting. Personally I really don't feel the need to root the phone. For me it works fine (although I do use a custom launcher so I can customize the look and feel). I also disable any bloatware that I never use. Unfortunately you can't completely remove the bloatware without root.

The Note 4 is still an amazing phone whether you want to use it stock and unrooted or whether you want to root and flash roms. Be advised tho this particular model is a pain in the rea to roo but keep at it and you'll get it done no problem.

Personally? I can't find a phone to replace it. For me, I'm network flexible, and I've considered a V20 on TMO, but honestly I can't find a reason to switch. Rarely if ever do I feel like I need more ram, and that's basically the only significant feature that the v20 would pose for an upgrade. And I'd miss EVERYTHING ELSE about the samsung. Reasons to buy it? Cheap, plenty of power left in the processor/ram category IMO, REMOVEABLE BATTERY (this is something I can't stress enough for me personally. And I can not stand that newer models don't have it.) IR support (why would they get rid of this, why?! why?!?!) and its TWRP/root capable. Again, something I can hardly stand to live without. My phone is ad blocked, xposed, etc... I'll be eating out and I'll start changing TV volumes and my friends just get this WTF look on their face... And I can't find a newer phone to beat it, that has all the same features, and can still be TWRP. My opinion? Yeah, it IS the best phone, and maybe the last GOOD phone samsung ever made. I know there's tradeoff arguments to be made. But they'll drag me to the grave with my note 4. No way I'll be switching until the last boat leaves the dock, and the phone simply can't function in society any more. Hopefully by then, there will once again be another option with removeable battery, IR, TWRP.... but we can only hope.

For what its worth, I switched from a note 4 to the v20. I miss the stylus occasionally but there's a solution for screen writing included with the phone. I like the v20 more

I've had mine since about 6 months after release. It was a decent phone when it was still locked, but once we got root, it became a phenomenal device. I've been eligible for upgrade for over a year, but I haven't seen a new phone I'm willing to replace it with. Getting hard to find removable batteries and SD cards. I'm curious about the upcoming Pixel 2, but mostly I'm just hoping my phone will last forever.
At this point, if it dies, I'll probably hunt down another Note 4.

I think the note 4 has been a decent phone. I purchased mine new in 2015. It's always had a really poor camera that dosent auto focus without shaking it repeatedly (common issue). It's also had a round of boot looping, which could only be corrected with a factory reset. After boot looping and other random crashing issues where it suddenly powers off. I've decided to move to an LG v20. P. S. You can buy a brand new note 5 for 259.

For fun, thought I'd drop in now that 2018 is looming.
I love my Note 4 (T-Mobile). I'm a flashaholic, and there's plenty out there (though my ext sd card makes Marshmallow roms my preference, since Nougat keeps wanting to reformat the 128g sd I have in this thing!).
I've flashed a few dozen different roms on this thing and it doesn't mind at all. Bought it used off ebay (I didn't know about the emm memory mess back then, which would have given me some pause even if ebay does favor the buyer). But it runs perfectly for me. I use a rubber case because I'm paranoid.
Reasons I really like this phone?
1. big screen.
2. durable.
3. REMOVABLE battery.
4. External SD card slot (at least 128g works just fine, maybe even more?)
Reasons to not go with it?
1. Ya gotta have the newest and shiniest.
2. Small but real possibility you'll run into the emmc memory issue (if you do, get your money back from whoever sold the phone to you and/or chuck it in the trash - game over).

I love the Note 4 and was thinking about rooting it. It's the longest I've ever had a phone. Been about 3 years now and it still runs strong for daily use. Most people don't even use a phone for its full potential. It's a tool for their social media, snapping a few pics, browsing the web, paying some bills (which we all hate), getting directions, etc. As a daily driver, it's been great and I can't find a reason to upgrade to a flashier new phone for $800 plus. I'm the type that if it still works well, then there's no point in replacing it. It still performs as well as middle of the pack models even 4 years after it's release. And the 515ppi 5.7" screen with 2k quality doesn't make the phone feel dated at all. Only the style of the phone feels dated but most of us have a case on it anyway. So hopefully with a new 3220mah battery and a root, this phone will last me a little longer since it still does what I tell it to and with T-Mobile LTE, which is nearly 2 times faster than Sprint, and WiFi through Verizon Fios keeps it snappy and feeling smooth.
