How to do a complete factory reset on a rooted s3?

Ok do I rooted my s3 yesterday using Mr robinson's method not to trip the flashing counter. I'm on stock with the latest update. Stock recovery also. How can I wipe my phone to the factory state but still keep root? If keeping root is not possible, then how can I do a factory reset? I assume the factory reset option in the phone settings won't work. Thanks guys

Factory Reset only wipes user data (APPS, messages, etc.), not the system, which is where SU is stored so you can factory reset without losing root. HOWEVER, I myself have never tried it via stock recovery or the option within settings (Though I firmly believe this still holds true). That said, the only way I can tell you to do it and be ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN you won't lose root is to 1st install a custom recovery (CWM or TWRP [I prefer TWRP]) and then choose the "Wipe Data/Factory Reset) option from within that recovery.

After I've ODIN'd a rooted stock ROM (Like the one you did to achieve root without tripping flash counter) I have immediately done a factory reset via stock recovery and never lost root. Sorry, I just remembered. Haha. So all you need to do is go into recovery (With phone turned off, hold down the home key + Volume up + Power) and choose the "Factory Reset" option. All it wipes is /data and /cache and like I said, SU is stored in /system so you won't lose root.

Thanks that helps a lot. anyway, have you tried the factory reset option in the phone settings? I suppose it is the same as the factory reset in recovery mode, isn't it? so just to be sure, after doing like you say, everything is wiped except the S.U app that comes with the rooted Stock Rom ?

Factory reset through settings does not remove root, ever. But you will need to reinstall busybox from the market. No big deal

[Q] cwm recovery and factory reset

I have the latest recovery and rooted firmware installed. I would like to do a factory reset to remove a botched Samba install/uninstall.
Will I be able to install Xposed and rbox mods? Any SU issues?
Any advice would be helpful and appreciated.

Doing a factory reset will only delete your personal data files and will not touch system or recovery. If your botched Samba modified files in the system, doing a factory reset will not restore those files. You will need to re-flash the ROM to restore any modified system files.
You can safely do a factory reset with CWM and/or rbox's pre-rooted ROM installed. If you are using a pre-rooted ROM, then SU and root will survive the factory reset. If you are using a stock ROM, then you will need to re-root and reinstall SU.

You will also need to disable OTA updates again after any Factory Reset.

So is it better to do a factory reset from within CWM or by going to the FireTV settings menu and doing it from there? What would the difference be?
Perhaps the answer to this question should be a sticky.

I haven't tested it to confirm, but there shouldn't be a difference. Both options should trigger the same thing, which is the deletion of /data and /cache. I would perform the reset from within CWM if you are concerned.

I started from the AFTV menu which booted me into recovery so I guess it doesn't matter where you start. Anyway all went smoothly. The only annoying part is that you can't set SU to grant permission by default. (AFAIK) You get the popup screen every time permission is needed.

I'd like to wipe out my first Fire TV and reinstall everything from scratch, but I'm worried about losing root or the bootloader. I assume I could do a factory reset from Clockwork Mod. Is that the preferred way?

You can do this in CWM. You won't lose root but you will need to disable updates again.

Hey everyone. My phone has been running like crap lately and I have thought about doing a factory reset. I just had a few questions. If I did a factory reset I'm pretty sure I lose root, but what about the custom recovery?
Also, this is what I had in mind to do - but would you mind checking to see if it would be my best route please? I am going to install a custom rom on it. But just wanted to do a factory reset / install stock firmware first before I did it.
Download and install stock firmware. 10B I believe is what it is.
Root it again and put the bumped recovery back on it.
Install CM12 or another rom.
Is that pretty much what I should do?

If you do a factory reset (with the kdz tool, its the best way if you want to reinstall the stock firmware), you lose everything (root, recovery, etc..) because it will flash the phone completely.
I recommend you to take a look at this for all the thing that you need to do: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2785089

And make sure you never do a factory reset from within Android w/ a custom recovery like TWRP installed, otherwise your phone will end up in a continuous boot loop. There's no reason for you to go back to stock anyway, as you're planning on reinstalling CM12 or installing a different ROM. You'll be doing a factory reset (wiping System, Data, Cache, and Dalvik) from within TWRP before flashing anyway, so there's no need to go back to stock beforehand.

If you flash your phone with kdz, yes, like the guy above said you will lose both root and recovery. What I'm curious about is reason you want to do it? You already have custom recovery so if you want to do factory reset (that is wiping data and cache partitions) why not do it manually there?
And what is the point of it? As you said you will flash CM12 or another ROM, so that will basically do a factory reset, you will wipe all (system, data, cache) to install your new ROM...
Of course before flashing or wiping system partition with TWRP I recommend doing a backup just in case.

Thanks for the info everyone. The reason I wanted to do a clean factory install instead of just putting on CM12 is because if I didn't like it, I could just go back to a stock, rooted KK.
Like I said it has been acting up lately, so maybe a clean install of factory can help it. That way, if I don't like CM I can just restore my clean copy.
Where as now, if I didn't like CM I would have to restore my messed up backup.
But I will probably flash back to stock firmware, root it again and put a custom recovery on it again. Make a backup of that, then play around with some ROMS.
But once again, I appreciate the help!

Root and factory reset

I have rooted my 8.4 wifi and have a custom recovery, and iam wondering what will happen if i do a factory reset. Will i brick it or will i lose root?

As long as you do a normal factory reset that doesn't wipe your system partition you will only lose your data, wipe your caches and maybe what's on your sd card (when you do a factory reset from the samsung's settings menu I believe).
Not sure about root though, but since you have a custom recovery you can flash supersu.zip from Chainfire and have root again afterwards.
Should you wipe your system partition download the stock firmware and flash it through Odin. But you will have to root and install custom recovery again after this.

A factory reset should not brick your device. If you erase the system partition, you will have to reinstall your rom again. As far as rooting goes, you said you had a custom recovery installed, so you should be able to flash a SuperSU.zip to regain root.
