I got my G4 2 days ago and I really want to root it, but unfortunately I realised I have an H815P model and can't be bootloader unlocked, so I can't root it.
I looked around for ways to get past this little inconvenience and found there is a way to root without an unlocked bootloader. The problem now is, this method seems a little old and was originally created for Lollipop, but my phone shipped with Marshmallow already installed and on firmware version 20D.
So the question I want to ask is, will the method of extracting the system.img and injecting root and flashing that back, work with Marshmallow and my variant of the G4?
And if that is indeed possible and will work, will the root files from this post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/orig-development/root-tmo-vzw-intl-variants-soon-root-lg-t3164765) work with Marshmallow, or is it specific to Lollipop?
EDIT: Another link to a tutorial about extracting the system.img and injecting root (http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/general/tut-guide-step-step-guide-rooting-h818p-t3227798); will this tutorial and root files work with Marshmallow and my variant, or is it also Lollipop specific?
Something else I also want to add: my phone info in settings says it's an H815P model, but the Droid Info app on the play store reports it as a 'regular' H815. Does this make a difference, or is it just the app's inability to report the proper variant?
I'm really only interested in getting root, as I don't intend to flash custom ROMs; I just want to use one or two apps that require root, like Titanium Backup, and I'm sure there must be a way to get this device rooted.

You cannot root on marshmallow.. I downgraded my device to Lollipop using KDZ files and then injected root by flashing the rootedsystem image
If you have a H815P device you can't unlock the Bootloader so the only way to root it -for now -is on Lollipop. To get root access on your device you have to do this:
1. Downgrade to 10c (Android 5.1) w/ LGUP (http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/help/lgup-install-kdz-mm-lp-t3249803)
2. Get root access on 10c (http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/orig-development/root-tmo-vzw-intl-variants-soon-root-lg-t3164765) (don't listen to the warning not to use on H815P .. it works)
I have an H815P device and this worked for me yesterday..

This would mean then that I won't be able to upgrade to Marshmallow, or any other upgrades that comes after that?
U will be able to go back to stock. When u decide u don't want root anymore u can just flash the correct kdz for h815p and u back to stock
---------- Post added at 09:03 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:53 PM ----------
Also you dont have to flash H815 kdz u can just extract your current system img and inject root with a ubuntu vm
check out this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/general/lg-g4-100-root-success-directives-root-t3180586
Both methods work well ive tried both on my device
You can always upgrade via LGUP but if you want to have root access so you must be on LP
Thank you everyone for your help and advice. I've downgraded and rooted now and it worked, with a slight side-effect; the downgrade formatted my internal storage and I lost all my pictures and other data
I wish the guides were a little more clear about this, that downgrading would format your internal storage, as well. At least I'm rooted now.
So, can anyone recommend an undelete program that actually works and can restore my lost pictures, specifically?

I just upgraded my TWN 815 to MM using LG Bridge, and completely forgot that I would not be able to regain root access. Does anyone have a kdz that will enable me to roll back to Lollipop?
Alternatively, I still have the rooted system.img file that I used to root the phone (using the root injection method). Can I use that to revert to Lollipop?
I had to do with a new unrooted TWN 815, you have to revert to Lollipop - none of the rooting methods see the phone on MM. You can do it via LG UP - google for it (I think it was posted here), and find a 10x kdz file - that post has links.
If anyone knows better, I'd love to know. But it looks like you have to have the unlocked bootloader Europe version of G4 to have root MM. Planning to flog the phone and get one of those. Annoying. I wish the seller had made it clear it wasn't a Europe/Int phone.
Is there any possible root method yet for the verizon LG G4 VS986, running the newest update of 24C?
Its the most current update.
Or is there a way to downgrade and THEN root it?
You can't root 6.0 without unlocking the bootloader since it requires a modified boot img. You can modify it on this phone but at best of won't boot, or worst you brick it.
If also appears the upgrade to 6.0 with a locked bootloader is a one way transaction. It won't allow a downgrade back to Lollipop.

There is a way to downgrade to 13B and then root the system. But there is no way to unlock the bootloader.
Please search the XDA for the same. I just successfully downgraded and have rooted 5.1 on G4.
If you downgrade to 13b and root, can you use Flashify to keep root and OTA to 29A (or latest MM)?

no
Downgrade from MM has been possible for some time. Every question you asked has been asked and answered several times.
You should do a little searching before posting redundant questions.
Here's the link for downgrading.

I went back to Lollipop after being on 28A. It's easy. Download 13B from Codefire. Use LGUP to go back to Lollipop.
Hi guys,
I've recently picked up a grey import G4 on ebay and opened it up, tried to unlock the bootloader and found out that it's a TWN model (Taiwan), so no unlock for me.
I'm wondering if, first of all, it can be downgraded from 6.0 MM to 5.1.1 LP and from there, injected with root?
I intend to eventually copy over various items via Titanium Backup, but require root first.
I've had a little look around but I'm not sure if this specifically is possible.
Help from seasoned veterans is appreciate.
EDIT:
title change, downgrade success, root success!
Found this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/general/815-taiwan-v10f-t3298685 which provided the current/latest (to my knowledge) kdz and root system image.
Followed this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/help/lgup-install-kdz-mm-lp-t3249803 to downgrade from MM to LP. (TIP: LGUP looks for .tot files, but feed it the .kdz anyway)
Followed this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=62028523&postcount=2 to then flash the rooted system image once downgraded.
Bonus:
Followed this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/themes-apps/guide-installing-xposed-locked-t3181593 and installed Xposed too. (I'm using xposed-v80-sdk22-arm64.zip)
Currently running 5.1 LP just fine. Hopefully it stays stable. It's exactly what I'm looking for right now.
Cheers everyone who looked at this thread and the authors of these linked threads.
XDA is a pretty awesome place.
It seems downgrade and root is possible on most models. I would assume its on yours. Worked fine on my Canadian H812. I used LGUP to downgrade then used the original method to root, root injection may possibly work too.

To clarify: I say downgrade because apparently there's little hope for the moment of ROOT on MM.
Is there any extra risk downgrading stock LG MM to a pre-rooted image of LP?
I would assume I could flash the international/europe h815 version with root over mine -- H815 10D EUR or H815 10c EUR, assuming you can get a hold of either -- but wondering it this is the best or right choice. I don't want to end up with a broken phone, bootloop, or whatever seeing it is brand new.
I want to make sure what I would be doing is the best way to do so, and am willing to wait a little extra to make sure I do it correctly.
I've looked but haven't found a TWN rooted image, but it doesnt mean it doesnt exist.
Cheers, and thanks for the input
hey all-
received a replacement D851 that unfortunately has stock OTA T-Mob MM already onboard(30D). How can I roll this back to something useful? I understand this 'Kingroot' app provides temp root until reboot so I could use that to shoehorn in a recovery, but there are plenty of comments about it cloning your phone to China. I did try running it offline and first thing it does is try to contact a remote server -to 'determine best rooting method'.. suuure. [Uninstall]
So which tool will be the simplest to let me rollback to KK or LP so I can install recovery and root properly? I have a TOT file already so what is the simplest method to flash it as of July 2016?
Been searching high and low to make this work. I have d855 running marshmallow but am in able to root it. Tried several one click ones that has failed (kingroot just ends saying root request and a number just under 30000). Kingoroot doesn't do anything. Iroot I've managed to get the cmd thing to work but not the rooting. Have left the phone with kingroot running to see if this request/adapting thing actually lowers.
Any ideas where I go wrong?
The marshmallow version on the phone may be too new and you may have to downgrade to an older version to root. Which version is currently installed?

6.0 I think the kingoroot page said it could handle it (marshmallow in general)
There are various version of MM so it's important to know the exact version of the phone. Apparently, kingroot can root some early releases of MM based on some threads I saw.
It's an d855 or is there another piece of info you mean?
Look under settings and software information. Marshmallow builds begin with 30x where x is a letter.

I have same problem
Kingroot is not work
V30e-AME-XX
If you can't find a root app that works, a ROM downgrade will be required.
Don't you need to be rooted to do that?
No, root is not needed to downgrade but you'll need to find the correct lollipop ROMs to flash.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64624324&postcount=2
Tried the first option on that thread but I only get update stopped due to an error.
Have tried to install twrp but having problems with adb. I thought the adb kit would be enough to make that work. Any idea what else to try?
Go in general thread and search for root marshmallow 30b that guide helped me root my g3 with kingroot. Tell if i helped
I found (I think) the thread you referred to but it seems to require that you have twrp installed. From reading the twrp website i got the impression you need to be rooted to install twrp? Have tried to load the image file from the SD card but can't find it when I reboot it. Not sure where I go wrong but I cannot get it to work.
You need to downgrade with LGflash tool to v30b and use latest kingroot 5.0. Then kingroot will root your phone and autorec file will flash twrp 2.8.0
Tried to do that (see post above) and it didn't work. No idea why.
Is this the thread we are talking about?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/root-twrp-marshmallow-d855-30b-t3286268
Yes and the one at the bottom of page one which tells you how to downgrade to lollipop. The downgrade does not work for me. It only tells me an error occured. The thread you refer to, I think you said you need to downgrade first and the root which I can't do as the downgrade failed.
Try flashing the file v30b from this video and then see if rooting with kingroot works.
Thanks. I'll try that later today.
