Hi,
I am been researching for few weeks now. Being just an android user and a beginner level android developer, I am kind of lost in trying to solve my issue. I bought a Xperia Play. It is carrier unlocked. The main issue is the internal memory which keeps getting filled up from time to time, that makes me sacrifice some less used but important apps. I would like to make use of my phone more efficiently and utilise it to its maximum potential. Request someone to help me achieve this by helping me remove these apps.
Thanks
you have to root your phone first and u will find a tutorial im the development section... And after that you can use titanium backup to remove those apps
Hi,
Thanks for the info. But I am kind of lost when I went through the forum. Can you please guide me a specific one? Thanks.

You could unlock your bootloader. You can do this here: http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/
This enables you to flash custom Kernels and Roms. Although you don't need this if you only want to root your phone, but in my experience custom roms and kernels are a great advantage if you want to get more out of your phone
The rooting thread would be this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1325334

Thanks Bombasti, but the unlock boot loader from sony mobile does not work for phones with IMEI numbers greater than 14 digits. Further, I also tried SuperOneClick but I keep getting the errors in Step 1 stating that the "rm failed for /data/local/tmp/boomsh. No such file directory", Step 2 also returns similar result. Can you help. Thanks.

This is not correct. You just have to enter the 14 first digits. So it should work for your phone unless there are other restrictions (e.g. from your phone provider).
Did you try it with the first 14 digits?
Also did you run SuperOneClick as administrator? I have no idea how SupoerOneClick works, but the error says that it can't remove a directory that doesn't exist. Maybe you can create the dir on your phone to fool the program?
Greetings,
Bombasti
-----------------------EDIT:---------------------
I checked the SuperOneClick thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682/
The R800i isn't listed as compatible device, what doesn't mean it's not compatible since the list is incomplete. But I remember that it didn't work for my phone either ( I tried it some time ago). I solved the problem through flashing an already rooted rom. Later i user Cyanogenmod which rooted from the beginning. But this needs an unlocked bootloader first...

When I first bought my ZL, I rooted the phone using binary4 V27 on superuser mode and that was very fast and simple. I could modify system files and do everything.
One day using my ultimate stupidness, I updated the firmware to 10.1.1.....253 then I did factory reset without doing a backup for my root.
Right now, when I go to settings -----> about ----> I get Kernal version 3.4.0 with android version 4.1.2 but unfortunately It seems like I don't have a rooted phone + I am unable to do any function of a rooted phone like modifying system files or ....etc .
I've tried million ways such as:
1- rooting the phone using the same method --------> the result is stucking at the wight screen and nothing happened.
2- Using motochopper method --------> doesn't work
3- Using the method of installing Android SDK and using the command prompt window to push (Su-busybox-superuser.apk) files to data/local/tmp/ --------> when reach sysrw step (sysrw not found)
tried to type SU (su not found)
tried to use one of the alternative commands like cd /system/usr/we-need-root or ./su-backup -----> file not found
or mount -o remount,rw '' /systemmount ---------> Operation not permitted
I will be following your instructions directly and give u the feed back
I am not gonna move anywhere until solving this issue BC I am getting crazy
I would highly appreciate your help guys , ... Thank you so much in advance

Ur bootloader is lock or unlock? If lock, you have to be patient for new root exploit method to appear.
Another way is to degrade ur Rom to. 434 and root. Then flash doomkernel v7 (this only apply to bootloader unlock) and flash .253 xcluding kernel. When finish once u want to reboot, there will be request to root appear.
Another another way, download rootkeeper, then temp un root and run OTA but some people in Z forum reported that it still fail to update, some successfully update.

Some aspects of modifying this phone can leave you a seriously broken phone, notably the TA partition. You would benefit greatly from doing a lot (like hours and hours) of reading in the "Z" section. All the activity is there, not in the ZL section. 99.9% of all the information there applies to the ZL (but practically NONE of the download files, so do not use software there unless clearly labeled for the ZL). The sections on backing up TA (look for DRM and TA), on using flashtool.
Note that all the information on root that does not specifically mention 253 is obsolete.

Hey guys,
Been searching for a few days now ive tried several root methods
the ones from playstore like
Kingroot
Kingoroot
Kingoroot desktop
Its a galaxy tab a6 running android 5.1.1
Build number LMY47V.T280XXU0APB6
All of the above say they can root it but they all failed
I have seen posts on forums such as this one offering custom roms for the device so I must assume there is a root somewhere and I just cant find it.
Any help would be extremely apreceated

This means it can at least be debloated.

Hello ashyx
I have the sm-T285m. Yes, I could not root it using the usual programs out there. Any way to inject root into the system image and then reflash it through odin? (as you mentioned you have managed to debloat it-maybe a dumb question as am sure you already looked into it) I recall trying to do such a thing on Huawei Mediapad x2 when there was no root but ran into issues after I accidentally overwrote my entire windows o/s and disk with linux and then gave up (had to extract files from image, add the su then recompile something like that?...from memory over a year back and was only my first and only foray into linux) The odin tar files are separate ones for modem, system, bootloader etc.
Thanks

I already tried prerooting the system image.
It wont boot because the boot.img needs to be patched and you can't patch the boot.img on a bootloader locked device.
I even asked Chainfire if there was any other way and he said no.

Thanks Ashyx...you mentioned you managed to debloat it. I tried ext4unpacker (maybe archaic now though recall it worked on 5.0.2) to separate the system.img into components but could not. I am interested in editing system image
(A) change dpi (increase the lcd density to 380 or so to get things bigger),
(B) change system font (put in a preferred ttf font),
(C) remove many unneeded (for me) google apps from the system folder, and
(D) enable mobile data auto on off for mms via the features.xml or others.xml. Do you think these could be done (you already mentioned the debloat).
typically i managed to get all of the above done if rooted.
Any advice appreciated on how to do this unpacking and repacking.
Thanks
does this help? opensouce kernel?
(again maybe preaching to the choir but thought I'd ask-not knowledgeable here but posting if it helps in getting to a semi-rooted type state somehow)
http://opensource.samsung.com/reception/receptionSub.do?method=sub&sub=F&searchValue=sm-t285
btw i 'managed' to get oem unlock to show as checked permanently...does that mean the bootloader is unlocked now? (cross flashed through odin the 285 on my 285m the system CP file...and reverted back to 285m-no difference though in network as modem was still 285m as was partition and BL-reflashed the BL as well separately for 285m-after all this shows oem unlock checked-when i got the device new it was unchecked)
edit...from what it appears, it means it CAN be unlocked, yes? but not actually unlocked?

It wont make any difference. Enabling OEM unlock doesn't unlock the bootloader.
You still wont be able to flash unsigned boot or recovery images.
It will only allow you to flash an unsigned system image.
I use Ubuntu to mount and edit Ext4 images.
You can use the windows or Linux version of simg2img to convert the sparse image to raw then mount in Linux
Tbh Samsung need to provide an unlock for this device like they do for the Chinese devices as there is no reason why this device should have a locked bootloader.

I have had a browse about and there seems to be a couple of places this might need to change, and from what I have read elsewhere
Code:
#!/su/bin/sush
mount -o bind /su/etc/mixer_paths.xml /system/etc/mixer_paths.xml change the permissions to 700 rwx------ and then reboot.
I read somewhere that the recent update to 7.1.1 changed the was mixer paths is loaded. It broke the stereo speaker mod that is used on the xl

I found the A1's camera pretty good sometimes, but the stock camera is quite useless, and no other 3rd party app seemed to be able to make good use of the camera.
Is there any way to get a good camera app, perhaps the Google camera, or the Samsung note 8 camera app?
U can't, u have to edit the build prop to enable camera HAL either it would not work.

The answer is root lol, why u don't want to root it?
There is actually no root required for editing build.prop. You unlock the bootloader, then you can boot (not flash) the TWRP and mount system with W permissions. Pull the build.prop file, edit it and push it back to its place. Then you need to set the permissions of the file through the shell. As the last thing you can relock the bootloader and have the edited build.prop file without having the root.
Google it and you will find the guide.
I tested it myself. It works.

Safer option is to use a Magisk module which does exactly the thing but without having to add the lines into build.prop manually and setting the permissions etc

Does not work. After downloading the proposed update I get installation error at the very beginning. Maybe after restoring the build.prop file the same way as I modified it, it might work.
Once you mount the system as read/write, you can't apply OTA. This is why it's better to use Magisk instead of altering system files directly.

As the last thing you can relock the bootloader and have the edited build.prop file without having the root.
Google it and you will find the guide.
I tested it myself. It works.

Hey there!
I just joined XDA for the sole purpose of finding this tutorial that I have seen floating around the web lately. But unfortunately, every website has a different version of how exactly this should be done. Do you know where I can find the exact steps to take in order to edit the build.prop without having to root my phone and without losing the OTA updates?
Cheers!

Hi,
Rajeev is right. You can edit the build.prop this way. And it is going to work. But you are gonna loose OTA, because you need to mount system with write privileges through TWRP in order to modify system file.
Is it possible to unlock the bootloader, root, make some minor modifications (activation of camera api, copying fm radio apk to system folder, etc), unroot, and finally relock (flashing stock boot.img before, of course) ?
I want to have it unrooted because of bank payments, banks apps and streaming TV apps, but I would like to have proper camera and fm radio... Is it possible??
no

How about rooting the phone with Magisk and use Magisk Hide to hide root from those apps?
Htf do you think miui camera is useless. I am a photographer. And find it quit usefull and makes full use dual lens. Have you even tried HHT? Never compare two different apps. HDR+ is google's algorithm. You won't get in miui camera. HHT is miui's thing. You won't get in Gcam. Anyways HDR+ is not mandatory, you can get it from any post processing app.

A1 camera is superb in Day light only. It can't beat Google Camera in very low light. Everyone trying Google Camera here for getting Selfie Portrait mods. That not available in A1 camera .. I am not a photographer. But i can tell as a normal user in low light Google Camera perform really better than A1 camera. May be some 3rd party apps can do that but someone loves Google Camera
