Note 4 shuts off and won't reboot!! Help please - Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My bf calls me from work phone and says he was in middle of sending me a message when his phone just shut off. He tried to power back on but nodda. I walked him through a hard reset but its still not coming on. Little LED light in corner just strobes blue. Everything on phone is factory so no rooted or anything... Please help me

Check the battery for a charge by plugging in the charger while it's powered off.
Hard reset? Was that a factory reset in recovery? Before the slow blinking blue light, did the boot splash animate and also animate a yellow spark screen?
I ask because that would be normal before display shows the apps are optimizing and starting after dalvik-cache wipe. Give it time; 10 to 30 minutes. If it's not starting with splash screen, pull the battery for a bit while discharging with the power button for at least 30 seconds. Longer if it still won't display the boot splash.
If it's still not booting, try download mode and connect KIES to recover it. It's been awhile but there's an emergency firmware recovery option but here's an older guide that might still apply:

pull battery for 30- 45 seconds. after getting it back together press,- volume up/home key/power (same time of course) to hopefully get the android recovery screen. if u cant get anything to show- KIES will not help. take the phone to a corp sprint store and have a nice friendly convo with a tech rep. after u have buttered him up ask about your note 4 and see if he will diagnose it without asking for the 75.00 fee worse case senario- pay the 75.00 up front and get an open box note 4 or possibly a note 5 if they are not avail. make sure to ahve your bill paid. cant be asking for a phone when u owe for 3 months.

It's related to the battery problems with Lollipop. Have him charge the phone while it's powered off and it should start charging up.

I don't believe its the battery and do anything with firmware cause I have Google Chromebook so it doesn't have windows on it and every one I've seen to download requires either Mac or windows...

There have been many batteries that failed after 12 months with a bad cell causing immediate shutdown. That type of shutdown or even an OTA update can potentially corrupt memory and fail to boot. Mine failed after 15 months; 2 shutdowns around the 20-30% capacity remaining was enough to compel me to stop risking memory corruption. But the battery didn't do that every charge cycle; very random but not since I stopped using that battery.
If you've factory reset in recovery and it still won't boot, the phone needs the firmware flashed. Take it to Sprint or a Best Buy Samsung Experience kiosk to get that done since you don't have a Windows or Linux machine. If the flash gets it going, I'd recommend getting a battery replacement but keep the phone charged above 40% until battery replaced.

Sound like a hardware failure or the battery is bad. I've had this happen on my other N4 that i just had replaced. To test for hardware failure do this exactly how i say:
1. Pull the battery then press and hold the power button for at least 1 minute and 30 seconds.
2. Release the power button and replace the battery but DO NOT press the power button for at least 10 minutes.
3. After letting the phone sit with the battery installed for at least 10 (without pressing ANY buttons), press and hold power, volume down and the home button until the phone boots to download mode.
4. If you successfully get download mode to launch then you should be able to press volume down to cancel and restart the phone normally. If this works to launch the download mode but fails to reboot normally then keep trying these steps and eventually u should be able to get it to boot.
However, if this works, it only confirms that there is hardware failure and odin will most likely fail when flashing the stock firmware. You will most likely need to have the phone replaced if the above steps work or if it does not work. But you can try to odin the same stock firmware that was last installed on the phone. If you try to flash a newer or older firmware than what is already installed on the phone, there's a good chance it will fail. this is where good memory comes into play. you will need to have a good idea of which software version is currently running on the phone and flash that version to successfully flash the stock rom tar using odin on your pc. Good luck

[Q] Soft Bricked or Hard Bricked? (Please, PLEASE help!!!)

I have a SPH L710 galaxy s3 (sprint). I recently flashed a Rom called hyperdrive 4.1.2 that was on it's RLS11. following the instructions (factory reset x2, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, wipe system), I then picked the features i wanted in the built in aroma installer and let the rom flash. When it was done I noticed i kept getting the message "the process com.android.phone has stopped". So i performed a clean install of my previous Rom which was Liquid Smooth.
A day or two later I noticed hyperdrive has released it's RLS 12, so i decided to give it another try. This time there was an option in the aroma installer for developer picks so i selected that, thinking my previous attempt i may have picked conflicting files in the aroma installer. The Rom worked fine for about a day. Then the next day while it was charging after the battery have completely died the night before. I noticed the phone had rebooted on its own, then it started going into a boot loop. I did a battery pull, and i noticed when i put it back in, before i could even hold the buttons to get it into recovery mode or download mode, the phone would vibrate and turn on by itself, without me pressing any buttons at all. After some trying i was able to have the buttons held so when i inserted the battery, i was already holding the buttons to try to get to recovery. When I did this it would say it was about to go into recovery, then the screen would go black. The same thing when I tried getting it into download mode, It would show the download mode screen, then go to a black screen. I Then did some research, after seeing no one else really having this problem, and noticing that since it was still seeing boot screens before the black screen, it shouldn't be a hard brick.
I decided to order a USB jig for my phone that came today. When inserted the battery with the usb jig the phone still turned on by itself, but it was able to go to download mode and it stayed at the screen. I used odin 3.07 to flash SPH-L710_MD4_1130792_Rooted_Nodata, which was a tar file you would use if you wanted to keep your user data. It took 10 minutes to flash but everything seemed to be a success, it rebooted my phone and everything seemed to be working fine. After about 20 minutes of my phone being plugged back into a charger and i was halfway through with downloading an app from the android market where out of nowhere my phone temporarily froze and then rebooted, to where it will show the samsung screen, then the samsung galaxy s3 screen, then just goes to a black screen. Now even with the USB jig, it will still power on by itself as soon as a place in the battery, go directly to download mode, but then go to a black screen within 3-4 seconds before i can do anything.
Has anyone ever encountered anything like this before? At first i thought it might be a stuck power button, but when I was able to flash through download mode with the USB jig that first time it makes me think it is bricked. Any help or insight would be GREATLY appreciated.

How long did you let it set on the black screen because it takes a while to boot up the first time after flashing a ROM.

Well i just placed the battery back in, it started on it's own without my pressing anything again, and i've been timing the last 5 minutes. but it seems like it will stay a black screen indefinitely. unless i remove the back of the phone, or snap it back into place, or any kind of micro impact movements it seems, when I do that it vibrates like it's first being turned on, and shows the samsung screen, then the samsung galaxy s3 screen, then it will go black again.
See if your adb on your computer can recognize the phone while it's stuck on the black screen. You might be able to push a Rom or recovery over using that.

You may want to just start fresh and lose your data with a different stock file. That kinda happened to me before on the gs2 and I found better results with a 100% fresh start. The no data always left me with a hangup or two after getting the phone to boot.

After the first odin flash i was thinking the same thing. But that's the thing, it won't stay on the download mode screen long enough for me to even try to flash anything else through odin. I'm also noticing when connected to the charger, if i make a slight impact against the phone with my palm, the screen will briefly show the battery icon as if the phone is charging when it is turned off, then the screen will go black again. When it is unplugged, is when it will show the samsung screen, then the samsung galaxy s3 screen, then go black again.
That's weird...sounds like something is loose. Any kind of recent impact damage to the phone? Dropping it, throwing it at your cat, anything like that?
To me it sounds like maybe your power button is stuck "down"
If you didn't know, the power button has a fail safe reboot that happens after holding for about 10 seconds. So no matter what, if you phone is frozen or whatever, holding power more than 10s will cause it to reboot. That would also explain why its turning itself on as soon as you pop in the battery.

not recently, and if it was ever dropped, it would be in it's case... But i had noticed that while it was in it's power glove case, sometimes i would have to use more than normal pressure on the power button to get the phone to respond. I was wondering if something was stuck, just haven't read anything like that happening to anyone, and when I used the jig the first time the screen stayed on.

[Q] Not quite sudden death - but still a major problem

So I recently installed CM 10.1.2 on my S3, and everything worked perfectly for a few days. Yesterday though, my phone started acting strangely (lag when turning screen off, registering phantom input, etc) and began rebooting every few minutes. At some point, it ran out of battery - and now I can no longer boot past the CM loading wheel screen.
I can't boot to recovery, and I don't think my phone is taking charge (from my computer or a wall outlet), and the farthest I can get is the loading wheel - sometimes it only gets as far as displaying the Samsung logo, or the Galaxy S3 screen with the android dude at the bottom.
I'm still covered under warranty, and would love to take it to the store for a replacement (I've had battery issues prior to this), but the fact that it can get to the CM loading wheel means that they might figure out that I've rooted and whatnot. But I can't get to recovery to flash a stock image, so...what can I do?

Your best shot is to either borrow someone's S3 battery or buy a battery pack. Use that to restore your phone back to stock (unroot) and then you can go to the store for replacement.

So turns out battery isn't the issue, I used a wall charger to get it to full charge. I can get it to the download mode confirmation screen, and can press volume up to confirm - but my phone reboots soon after that.
Recovery isn't really possible either, I can see the blue text in the upper right but my phone reboots after that as well.
My phone will often show an empty battery icon with a little refresh icon in the middle; does this indicate that it doesn't see the battery as charged (even though it is)?

Yeah I've been doing some research into the issue...
I've noticed that my phone automatically boots when I put the battery in, and that it'll do a quick vibrate when plugged in to a power source (outlet or computer) but won't turn on.
Apparently the phone isn't supposed to boot automatically when the battery is put in, and this could be the source of the random reboots - I think if I can get the rebooting under control, I'll be able to get into download mode and fix it all. But I'm not sure how to do that. Maybe the power button has gone bad, as it also doesn't usually respond when I try to use it to turn on.
If there is a problem with the power button, does anyone have any ideas on how to fix it?

Mine does the exact same thing where I have to pull the battery and when I put it back in it automatically starts up and when I go to download or recovery it turns off before I can do anything
Sounds like power button issue.
I was having the same issues (random reboots, boot loop, powering on when battery put in, reboots in download mode and recovery)
This is not an easy fix. I ended up pulling the power button out and just setting my screen to time out after 15 seconds. Sucks but it works now.
If I ever need to turn off or hard reboot, I stick a pin in the power button hole and push down on the button.
Really turning me off on purchasing future Samsung phones

The power button is a common issue for these phones.

[Q] SPH-L710 reboots in recovery Battery, power button issues possible

I have read the other posts regarding the rebooting issues of the Sprint Galaxy S3 variant, but I seem to have a touch more difficult problem. My phone constantly resets and seems to be getting worse. It now will reset in the middle of recovery. I was able to wipe the cache and dalvik and then it started resetting even more frequently in recovery and made reloading the rom impossible. It even resets in the download screen. So it makes it impossible to use Odin and other applications. If anyone has any ideas let me know. I have a few possible options that I am pondering. The following is what led up to this if you need some background:
A week ago, I noticed that my battery suddenly was not charging when wifi was on. I turned it off thinking it was some glitch and reset the phone and plugged it in to charge. It said it was at 100 % some hours later. then I turned it back on again and within a couple minutes, it said it was at 22%. So I hard reset and then plugged it into the wall, but it was still not charging. I had go somewhere,so I plugged it into the car charger and enabled fast charge. I turned on my data and all the sudden it rebooted, lost my wifi password, but when it came back on, it was charging properly. So I thought it was just some odd glitch. Charged properly for days.
Then I noticed the phone starting to randomly reset maybe once very other day when texting. I was actually going to put on a new rom tomorrow thinking maybe my old one had become corrupt. Then it suddenly increased drastically tonight to where it was starting to reset constantly. I thought maybe the button was stuck, and pulled off my otter case to make sure it wasnt being pressed down oddly, but it continued. Then I went into recovery and was able to wipe the cache and dalvik before it got really bad and now it won't even let me stay in recovery for any length of time. I almost got a rom loaded when it reset and its been resetting faster than ever. Becoming unresponsive to button presses as well. Even when I could get into the recovery, it would keep showing "swipe screen to open," as the power button was apparently continuing to activate or the phone was trying to reset itself. And yes, I have tried a battery pull several times and then tried to get into recovery, only to be booted out right as I see the recovery screen if I get there.
So that is my problem. I can't flash odin or anything else as the phone just keeps resetting. Part of me thinks to get a new battery and try to see if that doesn't solve my issue, as maybe the battery is causing the phone to reset? But part me is also thinking maybe the power button has gone sticky suddenly? It won't charge it seems as the red light will not come on and it keeps resetting before the battery charging icon can even come up. Any help or advice would be appreciated. I am leaning towards the battery going bad suddenly and shorting out the phone. I now have the battery, which last I saw was at 48% (It was charging when this happened), out of the phone and am waiting till morning to hopefully pick up a new battery. But I would appreciate any insights into this issue.
Thank you very much
Same issue
I'm having the same issue described above with the S3 constantly rebooting. I can get into download mode but it restarts a few seconds into the flash. I have tried a different battery but that did not solve the problem - I am also thinking it's a power button issue... any suggestions?

I just had my phone replaced for same reason ( Thank god for insurance) Download mode would last about 5 seconds, Recovery would do the same. I managed to get a stock restore with flash counter reset to boot as i was walking into the Sprint store for the techs to look at this lol.. Same exact thing happened on my S2. Power button is done. If you have INS call and get it replaced (Took me about a week for new phone)
I read some post on possibly using Samsung Kies to flash a new ROM, but that was for the international version. I would be curious if anyone has ever tried this or if its possible to replace the power button with a part replacement? I have ordered an S4 but this time I will make sure to use the home and left touch pad more often to unlock the phone and save wear on the power button. I wold still be interested f anyone has found a fix for this.

So after looking around, I am pretty convinced this the power button,as people describe on this question. If you don't have insurance, I see there are selling replacements or you can pay someone to replace and fix the power button fairly affordably on ebay. I might go the second route, as I want it fine right and the man had a 100 percent rating positive, and I dont really know what I am doing lol. Thanks everyone for your answers.

[Q] How to uncoma-brick SGT 3 P5200?

I am a new user but old reader of this forum and first of all I want to say Hi as being my first post here and Thank You for the all help I've got from XDA-Dev.
A few hours ago I wanted to reboot into recovery mode but just when entered into recovery display went black. For a moment I thought that the device when power off after pressing to long even after logo power button. But no, device would not power on even if I:
1. Hold for 60s power button
2. Hold power button + home button for 60s
3. Hold buttons combination for recovery
4. Hold buttons combination for bootloader
5. Connect power cord to show battery indicator
6. Use steps 1, 2, 3, 4 with power cord connected
7. Will not initiate a new device detected if I connect to PC
The device is in this state for about 5h and the top left side of the front camera is a little warm just like the case when its powered on and used(its not hot like when is used extensively)
Device status:
NO Root
NO Custom Recovery
Battery when this happen was ~81%
What can I do to fix this problem.
you can try to remove the battery for a few minutes then reconnect it. there are posts concerning battery removal
in forum. search terms - teardown , remove battery , surgery.
then try odin again. just be sure you have the right firmware or custom recovery ready to go and,
that you've done your reading/research in advanced so you're ready for game-time.
m
Thank you moonbutt74, I was considering that posibility and watched a lot of disassemble videos for my model but this is a problem for me because is still in warranty. I even considered trying to initiate a force reboot like this one here but sadly odin wont detect my device.
As for the battery removing fix that you gave me it would of fixed my problem. Just a few minutes ago I did not experience any heat buildup in the top left part so I plugged in my charger and waited a few seconds and there it was that bloody battery indicator. When I booted into android the battery indicator was 0%. So bottom line, in its state of coma my device drained the entire battery in almost 18h.
Considering this is no phone where you cant remove that easily your battery like in a phone this a fix for the moment. I am looking for a more permanent one, one that will prevent my device going into a coma again.
ahh okay,
in this case i would say put your warranty to work and get it replaced/repaired.
it seems to be your only real option.
m @luciqan
afterthought, if your battery drained to 0,dead that may work the same as a battery pull
charge it at least halfway and see if you pick-up in odin, have your stuff ready to
go just in case

[Q] SM-T700 Froze, Powered off - Soft bricked?

Hey guys,
Appreciate it if you could spare me some advice on how to proceed.
So I was watching a twitch stream and all of the sudden tablet froze, and the audio froze as well causing a large super high pitch noise, I hard-reset the tablet but instead of resetting it just turned off, I started to browse the forums and found that a combination of (POWER + VOL UP & DOWN + HOME) would reset the tablet, now what this did for me is turn the tablet on but it was stuck in SD CARD Mode, back again to the forums, read that letting it discharge fully and then it will be able to be charged and turned on, that worked tablet was back doing some various tasks no video again and then boom freezes again same symptoms except this time I couldn't get it to go to SD CARD Mode its very finicky after trying at various times in the day I finally got it to work, same process except this time as soon as it turned on I went into recovery factory reset it to stock, worked a bit longer this time only installed chrome, and it froze again (don't think it was chrome) , rinse repeat and I flashed the latest firmware with ODIN worked fine, I've gotten to the home screen ran through the "factory new" set up and it turned off of me again.
I plugged it in let it charge, came up with battery icon 5% 10% ect, then I left it for a while, I came back and I cant even get it to show the battery percentage(tap power) let alone turn on.
I'm fairly sure that eventually I can get it turn back on but from there I don't know what to do.
TL;DR - Tablet Froze, Hard Reset, Froze again - Rinse Repeat, ODIN to latest STOCK firmware, tablet worked for 5 min before turning off again (plugged in), present situation
Any ideas as what to be causing the freezing and how I could remedy it?
Also sometimes when it froze it turned itself off without me hard resetting it.
Thanks its been driving me insane,
Please do not hesitate to ask me to clarify or provide more information so I can help you help me.

I had the loose battery connector problem, but the symptoms do not sound the same as mine. I could get mine to boot up, but the screen would flicker and a few white lines would appear before it would reboot itself. I actually started a ticket with Samsung and got the packaging label but, upon further reading, realized that I was pretty much SOL after tripping knox, and didn't want to risk the chance of getting charged for just sending it in. If it is indeed the loose battery connector, you should be able to remove the back cover yourself and fiddle with it. Ultimately, mine needed re-soldering, and I was able to find a local electronic repair shop to do it for me for cheap.
Good luck!
UPDATE: I've managed to get into SDCARD MODE yet again, except discharging seems to get out of it, but once I plug it back in it doesn't come up charging it just black screen, until I hold some buttons and arrive back at sdcard mode. Good times.
Trying various things to get it to boot..
EDIT: Appreciate the insight Squez, I want to exhaust all the other options before opening it myself, if Knox didn't void the warranty to some degree, opening it up should put the final nail in the coffin.
EDIT2: Good news, sort of, tablet isn't dead! after numerous attempts with charge SDCARD mode, discharge, It finally start to charge properly and I managed to get it to boot, worked for a few hours then I left it to charge, and went to sleep, woke up and wont turn on again, but I am in SDCARD Mode again but need wait for it to discharge from presumably 100% ....
[What do you mean Sd card mode? DOWNLOAD mode?
Also no need to let the battery drain.
Just press VOLUME DOWN(not volume up) and POWER together then hold until it restarts.
This is a hard reset and will ALWAYS work unless the device is hard bricked. It is the equivalent of a battery pull.
I continually see here and there incorrect information regarding key combinations, even in so called guides, this forum is even guilty!
Here is what works on the 10.5lte, as far as I'm aware its the same for all versions, indeed pretty much any Samsung device.
HARD RESET:
VOLUME DOWN - POWER.
Hold until the device restarts.
DOWNLOAD MODE:
HOME - VOLUME DOWN - POWER.
Hold until the device boots.
RECOVERY MODE:
HOME - VOLUME UP - POWER.
Hold until the device boots.

[What do you mean Sd card mode? DOWNLOAD mode?
Also no need to let the battery drain.

I should of posted a photo earlier but here is one I found on google of same screen: (check attachments)
Except UP KEY and DOWN KEY don't do anything, its just this screen, if you attempt to hard reset ect, it will just reload this screen, hence the discharge, then plug it back in and hope it begins to charge "battery icon appears". I have gotten it to boot like this a few times.

Yeah its strange as.
I'll have a look at that, thanks.
EDIT: It just finished discharging and now I am on the battery screen.. Usually once it charges here I can get it to boot, what I'm curious is what on earth keeps causing it to freeze up, because in download mode and twrp (gone since i flashed stock via odin) it wouldn't freeze at all, only have issues with it once its booted or charging. I installed a logcat earlier hopefully that should shed some light on the situation,
EDIT2: Well another very interesting thing, the official Samsung charger wont charge it, only works if I plug it into pc or use a non-official charger, strange thing is nothing is wrong with the samsung charger or cable since I can charge my phone fully from it. These have to be some of the strangest symptoms.
EDIT3: Only works through USB port on PC for now, non official charger comes with red X on battery once booted. I assume you can work around this once rooted but that's for another time..
EDIT4: Charge through pc to around 2-3%, boot device, plug into official samsung wall charger and it begins to charge properly.
EDIT5: Hooray back to step one, trying get into SDCARD Mode, same thing happened left it overnight and it wont turn on or charge anymore.

i am pretty sure the HOME - VOLUME DOWN - POWER. puts the 10.5 into the sdcard mode.
my tablet is doing very similar to sunb3ar findings.
have had it come back to me once from sdcardmode.. (let if go flat and starting charging then it would start via normal buttons)
it crashed not long after that. it got stuck in sdcard mode again, but this time none of the drain flat, put on charge has worked.. just blank..
fyi- we try to put it in RECOVERY MODE, but it does not work when in this crashed / sdcard mode state
i even disconnected the battery and then plugged back on charge.. nothing..
today i tested the battery volts, 2.8v , for a 3.8v i thought that was ok. i attached my RC lipo multi charger set to 1amp 3.7volt charge, direct to the - + on the battery- got it up to 3.5v, plugged back in, put the charger on- the sdcard mode (most life it has shown in a week).
still not coming up with 'battery' display to say its 'turn-off and being charged'. just the sdcardmode might disappear and return..
i am currently adding mode charge to battery... will try to HARD RESET next.. since i have not tried that combo yet..
HARD RESET:
VOLUME DOWN - POWER.
Hold until the device restarts.
edit: i took it off 'direct' charge, battery at 3.7volts.. then plugged in normal charger, i got a 'battery symbol' but it had the lightening bolt, not a %.. so i unplugged and reconnected to my direct charge to give the battery more volts. i am surprised that the unit seems to think a battery with 3.8volt as it specs seems to not be like with volts not much lower than 3.8.. could be time for a new battery if we can get this thing to restart
