Google Music without Root? - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Title says it all. Is there any way to use Google Play Music on my fire TV? I at first tried with various "casting" or "mirroring" apps from my Phone, but none of them seem to work. Ive thought about rooting so I could actually install the google services stuff, but I would like to avoid that if possible.
I have the Fire TV 2.
EDIT: And I see this is a no question area... So if a mod could move it to the appropriate area...

Its Pretty Straight forward. Google search the following.
Google Login Service apk
Google Music Leanback apk
Google Play Store Leanback apk
Google Play Services apk
Install all apks
Go to Play store, log in. Should take you through set up questions and then fail to load the store. Then click on Play Music and your library should load. Just done it this afternoon and seems to run quite well

Hmm, I can't seem to locate music leanback anywhere, just the google store.

Got it working but music seems to have a voice search only... makes it hard to find the band I want

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B1HaZc4Bb72xcDN6SnFtUHY1dVE
There's a link to all the files I used.

Really? Never noticed. I was just flicking through artists or using Instant Mix/Shuffle. Never tried the search option. Sorry, better than nothing though.

Install Kodi, then use download the plugin.audio.googlemusic.exp-1.7.2.zip and install it. After you have set up your password it work great.

Will give that a shot. Thanks

Thanks for this info. It worked well for me without any issues.

I used this method to get Google play music running on both my fire TV stick and my first gen fire TV. But even better I got it to work for Google play movies on the stick. It didn't work on the regular fire TV for some reason though. Everytime I tried to watch a movie all you got was sound. But installing the YouTube app for Android TV on said fire TV I am able to play my play movies under the purchases section. So anyone wanting play movies on their fire TV using the above method for the music also works on the YouTube app for sure and may or may not work for play movies

For me the google play music apk doesn't install. After starting the installation process it stops with showing "app don't intstalled". Any ideas?

Has anyone had any luck getting the search to work? It appears to be a voice search only and doesn't work on the FTV.
Additionally, I can't find a way to browse "stations". It recommends a few for me but they seem to be based on my personally uploaded library.

Followed the steps and was able to get Google Music installed. I have 2 followup questions tho.
1. Is there a way to get the newer version of Google Music? I use Stations more than I individual artists. I tried installing the latest version from APKMirror, but it won't actually connect to anything.
2. I keep getting notifications that I need to update Play services. Is there a newer apk I should be using?
For what it's worth, I'm on Fire OS 5.2.4.0

The google play music app won't work. You need to find the "leanback" version.
I haven't been able to find one newer then the one in this thread. Maybe someone with a nexus player or shield can help us.

I had a feeling that would be the case. Was looking for an AndroidTV APK, but couldn't find anything.

the apk in this thread is from 2014. It seems weird that the leanback version hasn't been updated.

I'm still new to the terminology with the TV systems.... "leanback" is the qualifier for Android TV Apps??

Funny that we are all looking for the same thing. Has to exist right?
I've got a friend with a Nexus Player, let me check with him.

"leanback" is what Google calls their versions that are made to work with a remote (& do not require a touch screen).

I posted how to get GAPPS working in the Fire HD 6,7, and HDX threads a few weeks ago and was informed it works on the Fire TV as well. This video will show you how you can install GAPPS on the Fire HD6, HD7, TV or HDX without root. All Google Apps should work excluding Google Search (Google search now works), Google Play Store, and Hangouts.

I stated in the video and thread that the Play store will not work. That would require root. The play store just needs to be installed because various google apps need the app to exist to work.

Thanks this solution does in fact work for Amazon Fire TV, including Google Music and Movies.
For Future reader, a reminder:
It is EXPECTED that the Google Play Store does not have a connection and you will not be able to browse app in the Google Play Store, though you will be able to use app such as Google Drive.

Google play music works great.
Google play movies force closed on first attempt at playing a movie (i'll give it another go in a bit)
Edit: Gave Google play movies another go.
If you've recently watched a movie on another device - that movie will appear in the initial screen "Watch Now"
If you press that movie - you can view it no problem.
If you go into your library and choose a movie - the app closes.
Solution: If you want to watch a movie from google play on you Fire TV then watch it on another device (only a few seconds needed) first
I was hoping to get Sky Movies on my fireTV stick, but no dice. It wants com.google.android.maps. Any idea if I can install that without rooting?

Is there a new download location?

HI dudes,
the lnk to the file does not work anymore ...
I followed the tutorial but I am not entirely sure whether the part with ADB has worked (I connected to ADB over WiFi, Amazon Fire TV Stick, 54.1.1.0_user_110031420) or not. Google Play Games and Chrome are working, but Gmail and Drive are not.
Gmail starts, but there appears a message that there is an unknown problem with Google Play Services - but if I quickly go to settings, the app does not crash until I return to the start screen/synchronise.
Google Drive crashes immediately.
Play Music works with local music (haven't tested streaming).

I've tried numerous apk files developed in part for multiple devices and none work.
I did come across a Google Play Music addon for Kodi & even though the zip installed I cannot for the life of me get it to work. The menu displays & I've entered my correct Google Play Music logon credentials but when I access the addon the screen says "Working..." & goes no where.
Anyone have any ideas as to why?

Hello, I have this working for me, First uninstall all these
script.module.mutagen
script.module.gmusicapi
plugin.audio.googlemusic
Then download the new 1.2 version here is the link

Install only this, do not install the dependencies , then enter your info, it going to take like 5 minutes to load your library, then your good to go.

Hello, That I don't know, sorry.

HBO Nordic - Cannot get it working :(

Hi all.
I have searched throughout the internet, and this one seems impossible to fix for now
I have xposed installed and rootcloak, and can now enter the app and see a list of all movies and tv shows.
However i cannot play anything !!!
I believe the issue is with the WideWine DRM which is NOT supported by Fire TV, and which is neccecery to have in android.
DRM info from playstore will reveal which DRM the Fire TV supports:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cz.romanhosek.drminfo
The HBO app works fine on my LG G2, and I can see that DRM Info tells me the WideWine is available.
Can anyone tell me if it someow possible to compile this DRM library into fire tv so we can have WideWine DRM protetected content?

Someone was asking about Widevine the other day. I just dismissed it, but it might be possible. Get the errors from logcat and we'll see what's going wrong.
That would be amazing.
I have attached two logcats. One which is filtered (small duration) and one which is not.
The package name is obviously com.hbo.android.app, and playback is started around 11:41 (see large logcat file).

Hi did you have any luck succeeding in getting HBO Nordic running on your FireTV box. I would love to have it running too.
I simply do not understand why they are not interested in supporting all our devices.
Looking forward to your update.

Cool! worked for me too... but had to precisely install the google play services version (7.0.86_1763202-010).
But its a bit slow may be because I am using it outside nordic region with a smart DNS service.
How did you manage it guys? I installed play store and sideloded the HBO Go from google play store, I can install it and run it but can't control it as it expects touch screen. Tried using the remote controller and the gamepad but is crazy, no idea what is being selected, etc. Thanks
Btw. the reason I'm doing this is that I'm located outside the US (in CZ) and the HBO Go app that comes with FireTV connects to hbogo.com and it is showing me error that I'm connected from outside the US.
OK just in case somebody comes across this thread in the future. I have managed to install the Android version of HBO GO after installing the Google Play version that was referred few posts ago. I have used the Android app "Mouse Toggle for Fire TV" to navigate through the interface. At the beginning HBO Go failed to connect when Fire TV was connected through LAN port so I had to connect through WLAN and then HBO Go started to work. The only issue I'm still having is that I can't play some new series like Westworld, Divorce and few others that do not stream at all. Could it be the codec? the resolution of the video? Other movies and series play fine.
I managed to get the latest version of HBO Nordic (3.1.0, I think it is) installed on my Fire TV Stick yesterday:
Installed Google Play Services, latest non-beta version, but NOT the Android TV version
Installed Google Play Store, latest non-beta version, also NOT Android TV version.
Installed a "Force Landscape" mode app, otherwise interface is distorted.
Installed the Mouse app for Fire TV, to use the remote as a cursor.
I could then log in and browse the library. Yay. But all playback fails. Logcat indicates it's something with the Audio that goes wrong, but that's about as much as I can gather...
Android TV versions of the Google apps wouldn't work. I suspect that this is because FireOS was forked from regular Android, and not Android TV.
Anyways, I got this far. Maybe others will have more luck?

The problem is with Google Play Services. If you are rooted:
Install the Xposed Framework if you don't already have it installed.
Remove Google Play Services.
Download, install, and enable the Xposed Framework module called "This App Will Run Without Google Play Services" here: http://repo.xposed.info/module/xeed.xposed.dngmod
Thanks, I'll try and report here. I have AFT rooted + Xposed installed
Well, in http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/mod-app-run-google-play-services-1-0-t3054115 report that Youtube don't work without Play Services.
I will have to try another solution
Turn of auto updating in the Amazon store and it will fix your problem. Turn off auto updates and reboot. To do it just choose an app to install from the Fire TV launcher and you can access the setting to turn off auto updates from there.

This doesn't work for preventing Google Play Services from auto-updating.
You can turn off auto-update inside Google Play Store and also within Amazon's settings, but Google Play Services will still auto-update.

Then something is very wrong with your Fire TV that has nothing to do with the google play store.
I can confirm that the play store for me automatically updates after my first close of the store. I have to keep on reinstalling the older play store version, since the newer one always displays a white screen. I am using one of the xposed modules to change my device disguise to a nexus tablet. It just seems to break every single time it autoupdates.
I can open the sidebar, but the screen is just white and I cannot search.

Do we have a consensus on if this fix is working for most people? Btw--i don't know why but when I first got the white screen in play store (maybe 5 weeks ago) all I did was remove play services and and its continued to work ever since. I'm just curious about the above mod and being proactive in case it stops working.

I'm just curious about the above mod and being proactive in case it stops working.

What you did is fine as long as there are no apps that require Google Play Services like the "Watch ABC" app.

It's a Xposed module, check http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/xprivacy-ultimate-android-privacy-app-t2320783
I managed to "freeze" my store and play services using the immutable flag route (chattr command). Created 2 files "com.android.vending-2.apk" and "com.google.android.gms-2.apk" in /data/app/ folder for store and play services respectively (I "froze" the play store as well as version 5.3.6 works fine for me).
I wrote a little script (remove the ".txt" at the end from the file name) to turn on and off the immutable property of these files. It is a pretty through complete overkill (LOL) as you can just do that with 2 lines of code, but I wanted to learn a bit about scripting, so went the whole hog with functions, arrays, making sure the dummy files are zero bytes, checking existing flag, how to return values from functions, error handling, verbose debug statements. I am attaching it if anyone wants to take a peek or wants some base scripting code to do other stuff on top of it. Its documented reasonably. You can run it by default. If you want to turn OFF the flag (for taking updates), you pass "ULOCK" as a command line parameter for the script. Its documented in the script... Please don't run it without understanding it first, though it does not do anything destructive except change flags. You will need to create the 2 files (or 1 file or 4 files if you want to lock all Google apks) manually in the /data/app/ folder.
One artifact of using this method that I have noticed. The FTV will periodically throw up an error message:
"Not Enough Space
Additional space is required to install this app. You can free up space by removing installed apps or connecting a USB drive. Recommended drives can be found at www.amazon.com/firetvstorage."
You will get 2 options to choose from: Install Later and Manage Installed Apps. You need to click on "Install Later". Its a wrong error message about space, but it has to do with the inability of Google (and FTV) to replace those dummy apks as they are locked.
Google will download newer version to /data/data/com.android.providers.downloads/cache/ folder, but it will sit there as it cannot overwrite the dummy apks.

Logging Into YouTube App on 2nd Generation FireTV

I was able to sideload the Aptoid store and install the "official" Youtube app, not the wrapper app that's currently available. I am not able to login and see my subscriptions. The app works fine but when I try and login nothing happens. Do I need to uninstall the wrapper version of Youtube that's currently installed? Is there a way to get the darn PlayStore installed?
Thanks

You need google services installed. There are a few threads on how to install it, but finding the compatible versions also seems to be the issue. If you are looking for a version that will be available after the new year (if truly google blocks amazon) side-load and install this one.

It works like the current amazon youtube app, but registers as a TV.
Nevermind

I was reading further down and apparently you can view videos but not actually login to the account which is stupid but at least it's installed.

You might be able to get into the youtube tv through silk or firefox. Both seem to work ok with regular youtube and logging in.

Install the following for signing in. Youtube and services are working with these....
Google Account Manager v4.4.4-1227136
Google Services Framework v4.4.4-1227136
Google Play Services (AndroidTV) v11.9.51 (836-177350961)
Google Play Store (AndroidTV) v4.6.17
For youtube
YouTube for Android TV (Android TV) 2.02.08
I can upload a zip file for these. This should get you into running the YouTube TV app. If there is one, try the YouTube for Android TV (64bit if available)
