I wanted to post here since this is the "Apps" category for Fire TV...
By following the XBMC wiki for FIre TV, I got XBMC running in just 3 minutes.
> Wiki info page- http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Amazon_Fire_TV
My SMB share was discoverable and my library was populated just a few minutes later.
I've verified good video and audio playback on SD, 720p, 1080p videos. Scanning and skipping works well in video playback too.
The only thing I continue to stumble with is that pressing the "Home" button returns you to the Fire TV homescreen, backgrounding XBMC.
I haven't yet found a way to create a homescreen or "Recents" shortcut for XBMC, so it's a chore to open it every time by navitgating to Settings > Applications...
If anyone knows how to get the PleXBMC add-on working within XBMC, I'd love to know how. I tried it and get a script load error every time I try to launch the add-on.
Other than that, do you know have any other add-on recommendations to make XBMC even better for the Fire TV?

good, thank you! with hope, people will write about xbmc/spmc in this thread, instead of random other threads, or, even worse, that unholy "amazon fire tv" proto-thread that refuses to die.

I prefer gotham, it was great on ouya. but on firetv I had to switch to spmc (12.4.2 as of koying's latest recommendation).
even the "master" and "amazonfiretv" nightlies and test-builds of gotham, give me a headache - it's weird and I can't describe it too well - pulling up the info overlay by pressing 'o' on the keyboard, I see that there are zero skipped frames and zero dropped frames. but ?something? is still screwy with motion blur - no artifacts or anything. but there is this jerkiness, or something, that hurts my eyes and the lasagna in my brainpan...?
my only complaint of spmc is that it breaks most of the 360 controller (a "ok/enter" and b "cancel/back" still work, but not the sticks or dpad). I still can't figure out how - neither xbmc nor spmc come with any keymap files, not under system/keymaps and not under userdata/keymaps. I have tried 360 keymap xml files from various github sources, both spmc and xbmc, no dice.
my only complaint of **MC in general is not being able to mess with network buffer sizes in the UI (yes I am that lazy) - usually don't have a problem with 720p mp4/mkv, and this is on wireless, even. but sometimes my landlord uses netflix over wireless and that kills everything else.

alt-tab isn't bad if you're already into using a keyboard...
I haven't tried it yet but people using alternate launchers have reported using Llama they can make it jump to their preferred launcher after pressing the home button. it might work equally well setting it to jump to xbmc rather than a launcher? hm I may have to try that...
I actually quite like the native Fire TV UI and would be happy with a hacky way to add a shortcut for side-loaded apps to the native menus.
I'm sure it's possible, so I'll be patient and wait for it to happen ?
I don't have any control issues because I'm using the fore TV remote, but I will be plugging in my Windows MCE remote USB IR receiver to see if I can get my Logitech harmony remote working on the fire tv.
The only other thing I would like is a mapping of the back button to "stop" when playing video in XBMC. the default xbmc behavior for the "back" action is to keep playing the current file in the background while displaying the last screen.its a very odd behavior IMO, and with no "stop" button on the fire TV remote, the only workaround is to pause the video when you want to go "back".

These are the steps that the user over on the XBMC forums posted to help us out with llama:
Event 1:
When phone starts up - set Llama variable 'startup' to 'true'
Event 2:
When the current app is XBMC on Ouya - set Llama variable 'starup' to 'false'
Event 3:
(Use the AND option) {when the current app is KFTV Launcher and when 'startup' has a value of 'false'} - run XBMC on Ouya.
However, you don't have to set KFTV Launcher as the trigger. I just picked a random app I didn't want to use as a jump pad. I installed the smithsonian app and put it in place of the launcher. Now when I open the smithsonian app, it flips back to XBMC. Not efficient, but works better than digging through the settings.
You can re-map buttons in XBMC with an add-on called keymap editor available in the programs menu>program add-ons>get more>key_map editor.
You can also just hit "Select" on the FTV remote and that will bring up the OSD. Then you can just d-pad to the stop button when you want to exit a movie.
v13 gotham beta4 release just came out (ok 2 days ago, I wasn't paying attention I guess). all my complaints about weird undescribable video motion are gone!
and that is even with turning off mediacodec and only having libstagefright turned on! yay!!!
http://xbmc.org/xbmc-13-0-gotham-beta-4/
http://mirrors.xbmc.org/releases/android/arm/
the beta4 announcement also said force update your repositories if you're having problems such as they're no longer staying up to date, or they're suddenly empty, etc.
http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Add-on_manager#Force_refresh
they recommended this if you are coming from xbmc v12 (not spmc, it has its own separate file tree) or even if you are coming from earlier betas of v13.

I also read that you can install SPMC and XBMC side-by-side due to the unique installation paths and libraries. I may try out the latest Gotham release, but I've been very happy with the performance of SPMC so far.
I really just need the ability to add a shortcut to the main menu, in either "Recent" or "Apps" etc for it to be convenient to access.

you got it, they won't step on each other because all the resources and binaries are separated into com.semperax.spmc and org.xmbc.xbmc. which is also a nice way to keep testing v12 vs v13 simultaneously...
although now that the motion-blur-weirdness-but-thats-not-exactly-it, is gone from gotham beta4, I am done with spmc (I could still never figure out why it broke so many buttons of the 360 controller, and I spent hours with keymap xmls and junk, ugh. whereas gotham always worked 100% fine. they both must have built-in keymaps you don't even see in their filetrees, or something)

yeah it doesn't bother me enough to reinstall nova launcher and mess with Llama.
but, recent, man that would be perfect. until now I was not a big fan of recent-type-behavior (sure, sometimes in the start menu in linux or windows, ok...) - but now with firetv it is awesome.
like, my watchlist menu is turning into some huge unholy mess. but the recent menu is serene and shows me exactly what I was doing: "why yes, sir, latest indications show that you were halfway through season 4 of sg1, and you were also using Plex around the same time".
of course they also jam those stupid semi-ads in the recent menu, so for that, screw 'em.
Something you can try is using the app "llama" to start XBMC whenever a certain program is lauched. For me, I have XBMC start whenever I open the app "Tubi TV". I just chose an app on the store that had an icon I could remember and set it up.
Works very well for me.

What I can't figure out is how to use the library plugins to index both movies and shows. I have my entire collection in a single folder. Right now I can only enable either one or the other in XBMC. Is there a way to do both at the same time?
Try just adding the same path a second time, except denote it as a different media type the second type.
Not sure if XBMC will reject that or not since you've already added it once as a different content type (TV, movies etc)

I just verified that you can add the same path twice.
The first time, select a "TV Shows" scraper to have it scan TV show content for your library.
The second time, select the 'Movies" scraper to scrape and add Movie content from that directory to your library.
You will likely have some issues with some shows importing to your movie library, and some movies importing to your tv shows due to common names between both (example- Transformers movies will probably get scanner by the TV scraper and add the Transformers tv show series to your TV library).
Aside from these unavoidable duplicate scraping issues, all of your content should load.
I recommend braking our your library into separate directories for "TV Shows" and "Movies".
An easy way to do this is to install Sickbeard to automatically scan and move your TV Shows to a new directory, leaving just movies in your current media directory.

I actually tried that same tactic before and it didn't work (Frodo). I am going to install Gotham today anyway, will try again.
My setup is that I download via utorrent and when completed, the files are moved to a single folder storage drive mounted on my RT-N66U. XBMC then reads the files from there... I'll look into sickbeard, thanks!
Has anybody tried LiveTV with tvheadend? It does work for me, but I am only able to use the channel that is already tuned. As soon as I try to switch to a different channel then XBMC crashes. It works fine on my Android phone, therefore it must be something with it running on the FireTV.

Am testing with TVH.
Opening a channel is ok, HD or SD (h264 1080i without deinterlace).
Zapping is an issue, no crash but video gets very choppy like 4fps sounds is ok. Stop and Play fixes the issue.

One of the things I was most excited about pairing my Fire TV with XBMC was the ability to have on-demand 3D movies. Last night I gave it its first run and, unfortunately, it did not go well. We started a 1080p 3D movie via XBMCtorrent. Things went smoothly for the first ten minutes or so, then a big error message appeared on the screen saying that my Fire TV was nearly full to capacity. XBMC showed that it weighed in at over 6 gigabytes. (My Fire TV has only about 3 repositories and 3 add-ons installed beyond the native Fire TV software and the XBMC software itself.)The only thing I could think of to do was to use a Delete Files command that basically set XBMC back to the drawing board, where I had to reinstall all my add-ons, reset the screen size setup, everything, but at least the error message went away. We started up a new 3D movie, and several minutes in, XBMC completely crashed.
I know the storage on a Fire TV isn't enormous. Does that mean that 3D movies aren't playable on the Fire TV?

It depends on your source I guess.
I have 3D Blurays I ripped to SBS MKV files using AnyDvdHD and BD-rebuilder. They play just fine so far.
But I'll admit I haven't tried playing any Torrents
Just a guess but are you using genesis with fan art enabled? Those thumbnails add up. Lots of people have complained about low memory. I'm rooted and since using advanced settings to store meta data on external drive I've had no space issues.
But, I'm not an expert, however, that doesn't make sense to me. I've watched very large 3d files on devices like atv2 with flash memory.
I don't want to steer you wrong but maybe the zero cache setting would work? I've read lots of posts on low memory and aftv but this is the first time I've heard of a file not playingon a device with apparently enough free space.

i think it just means than any video you try and fully download with sbmctorrent onto the fireTV box is going to be an issue since there isnt room for big movies on the internal storage.
3d movies work fine here, SBS is most common online and is best imo. if your looking to "stream" 3d movies from online, try the addon named after the bird "phoenix" from tvaddons.ag it contains a few of the sources from the old mashup and 3 or 4 of them have a decent 3D section with 20-30 titles in each.
Thanks for the responses here.

nhumber, are you saying that XBMCtorrent downloads the full movie to the Fire TV itself, while other add-ons do not, they merely stream? Is that correct? XBMCtorrent does seem to operate differently, as a download routine occurs before the movie begins. I wonder, does it discard the movie file once I've finished viewing it, or do I need to go in and manually clear it out somehow?

An excellent idea. I take it that these will stream like other typical XBMC media and won't bog down the Fire TV by trying to store it locally, is that correct?

from what you are saying i was just assuming that must be how xbmctorrent operates, which wont work well on the fireTV, i dont know if it saves it or if you have to delete stuff yourself, SBS means Side by Side, which is the typical 3d format you will find online. The Phoenix addon has SBS 3d movies in a few catagories and they all work well for me.

I missed the part about xbmctorrent. Thats completely different. I use it on rpi openelec because I have a large HDD attached. I didn't know xbmctorrent even worked on aftv? But if it does it would need to be playing small files because otherwise your internal space will fill up to your limit then the movie will stop. xbmctorrent (I'm fairly certain) needs to download the entire file while it plays. Once finished it should auto delete unless you tell it not to. Like I said I never tried it on aftv but obviously it works. So if you're rooted you'd need to go into the addon settings and hopefully you can save that file to external (need to be rooted.)
The advanced settings I was thinking about is the zero cache from maintenance tool but it doesn't apply here at all now that I read the full post.
My advanced settings to store to external? Is that what you want? It goes something like this, but you need root. Copy this to a plain text and call it advancedsettings.xml
<advancedsettings>
<pathsubstitution>
<substitute>
<from>/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/org.xbmc.xbmc/files/.xbmc/userdata/Thumbnails/</from>
<to>/storage/usb/drive1/xbmcthumbnails/</to>
</substitute>
</pathsubstitution>
</advancedsettings>
Amend it if you're using kodi instead of xbmc AND if you mount with stickmount your usb storage will be in sda (don't recall the exact path but just check it by looking with es file or root explorer. I'd suggest using adbfire to mount the drive. Then you can follow those exactly if you're running xbmc. Create the folder in the external "xbmcthumbnails"
***ALSO if your metadata is completely blank after applying this that means it worked. Just delete the Textures13 in database, restart xbmc and they'll be back.
---------- Post added at 01:56 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:35 AM ----------
KLit75, Genesis is one of the three add-ons I'm using. I'll have to dive in and see if I can find where to disable the fan art.
I just responded tht that advice doesn't really pertain to your problem. XBMC uses its own scrapers for all the art. Lots of people began complaining of low memory after Genesis was released. It pulls from many other places and you can access trakt collection, imdb, and other accounts then add them to xbmc library. It's an awesome addon really, but all that metadata that gets stored on your internal can amount to a lot and the AFTV don't have a lot.
But like I said xbmctorrent works by downloading the file to your aftv so the space needs to be available. Unless they're compressed to mkv, 3d files are huge. If you have say 2gb of space available and you want to watch an episode of the Walking Dead in HD (around 1 gb) you shouldn't have issues with playback. Plus, in general, everything runs smoother when your internal memory has room to spare.
If you're rooted Id advise you try those advanced settings I posted. I never get the low memory message.

Yes that's right. I've amended it for SPMC, xbmc, helix and when I went from sda to storage/usb/drive1
Remember to create a folder on external "xbmcthumbnails" and like I said all your icons will disappear. Just go into database, delete textures13 and restart. After I do this I usually just delete the thumbnails folder in xbmc. You should see a significant increase in free space after you check.

Encode your 3D Movie as a HSBS MKV, put it on a network share, use SPMC to access that network share and play the movie back.
Works fine for me.
Using Plex Server/Player with my same HSBS MKV files works too.
There are tools out there to make them if you have the Bluray.
Clear Maxed Out Storage
This is good info for a newbie like me. So it looks like XBMCtorrent is not the way to go to view movies for those of us limited to the stock Amazon Fire TV hard drive.
Now the question is, how do I delete the data that has accumulated? Right now, my Amazon Fire is unusable because the Manage All Apps screen shows that XBMCtorrent has accumulated over 9GB of data, (isn't that nearly double what the Fire's hard drive is?), so I clearly need to dump that data somehow.
However, if I use the Manage All Apps screen's option to "Delete Data", as Raymondo17 points out, I lose everything I've spent time dialing in just right.
Is there a way to clear the accumulated downloaded movie data without having to start from scratch afterward? Again, I'm a total newbie as of this weekend, so "XBMCtorrent for Dummies" level answers would be greatly appreciated! ; D
PS - Does anyone have a favorite alternative to XBMCtorrent? I really appreciated the work they put into organizing the movie selections by 1080p, 720, 3D, etc..

Heh, true.
But on the other hand, it is kind of ironic thinking about how much of a struggle it is to get my massive library of legally purchased blu-ray (23.976) to stream to my TV. That old idea that scene releases are often better created/packaged than their legal counterparts is absolutely true IMHO. This isn't to say that I support piracy; it's just something I've been thinking about the last week as I work with my AFTV.

Haha, forgot to label that. I was referring to the frame rate of uncompressed blu-ray video (23.976 fps). Stock, the Fire TV doesn't support 24hz output, so playback is choppy at times.

Real Simple... Find an Addon that does NOT use Bittorent. I mean what exactly would you think would happen if you tried to DL a 50GB 1080p 3D BR rip? On to a Device with only 8GBs of shared Storage?
Without naming names, there are a few Add-ons that offer Movies in 3D (Some also in Top Bottom), and outside of a few of these not playing correct on my tv. (The images weren't aligning correctly), these types of Movies have never caused me any problems. Outside of actually sending a proper 3D switching signal to the tv. Thankfully setting the 3D manually isn't that big of an issue.
I have a few questions for the more knowledgeable, resp. for the people with rooted AFTVs:
Has anybody tried any Airplay-Out app like AirAudio or AllStream. I don't have a rooted AFTV yet and the only thing I am actually missing on mine is airplay out (I only intend to use AFTV for music playback), so I wonder if any of those apps work as advertised and if I should go through the troble of trying to find a rootable AFTV in germany (new ones sold aren't rootable anymore).
If nobody has tried this yet, maybe someone is curious and test and let us know?
Install Pushbullet on your fire tv. You can send and recieve just about anything through Pushbullet. You can even send inbrowser video for most websites by simply sharing the url with pushbullet. Another nice thing is that XBMC has a Pushbullet service addon, which means you can send everything to your XBMC. Pushbullet has got to be the best XBMC addon of the past year. Best of all, its free and simple to use, and its cross platform. XBMC, Android, Windows, Mac etc plus firefox and some other browsers also have a pushbullet addon. Pushbullet in my opinion is by far the easiest and best way to send content instantly from one device to another. You can be 10 thousand miles away from all your devices running Pushbullet and can still instantly send anything to them. Its all done through your Gmail so there is no need to be connected to the same router.
Thanks, but I am not trying to send video or anything TO the AFTV/Kodi. I want to send music FROM AFTV to Airplay devices and pushbullet can't do that.
But apart from that pushbullet seems nice for other tasks, will have a look at it.
I tried it a couple months ago while I still had root. Neither Airaudio nor Allstream worked.
Ah, I feared as much. Thanks for the info, that spares me a lot of trouble.
If only I could find a device capable of outputting via Airplay - that is not from Apple, that is
My Eny M8 Android box does it, so I guess most of the Amlogic s802 boxes will do it. However no HD Netflix, Vudu ... Most streaming services are limited to 480p and there is no Amazon instant. Linux can output via pulse audio. There is Airfoil for Mac( only if you what multi zone) and Windows systems.
I am running Mediamonkey on Windows with Eric Mille's awesome Remote Speakers Output, but running a windows machine 24/7 only for Music is a bit overkill. I love the possibilties with Mediamonkey though (Dynamic playlist, Auto DJ, a lot of nice plugins) and find that almost no other platform is so versatile. And it is actually not easy to get Windows and Mac to output Airplay reliably and in sync to a few Airport Expresses without hiccups, no matter if I use iTunes (bah), RSO or Airfoil. So I was hoping to use Kodi, which is not bad at music playback, but Airplay is one of my output channels and I am looking for a stable and reliable platform, with not too much power consumption. I was so hoping AFTV could be the one...
I've read a litte about pulse audio, but I am a complete Linux lamer...
Has anyone managed to get this app to work on their Fire TV: http://livetvapp.tv/ ?
The authors say other users have managed to get it working on Fire TV by sideloading MXPlayer but I can't seem to click on the links within the app for the video feeds.
I think it only works with the free version of MX Player, cause I tried it a while back and it won't work with the pro version of MX Player. The pro and free versions of apps usually have different named APK files which is what the app looks for to launch MX Player, and it is only programmed to look for the name of the free version of MX Player, which is not smart for the developer(s) that made this app, cause not everyone uses the free version. I am pretty sure you need an account now to watch the media on the latest version of the app, which is a deal breaker for me. If they are brave enough to steal content that does not belong to them and give it away for free, they are not getting my email to do god knows what with. Also, the apps is just the same links you will find inside several Kodi addons, and the Sparkys Streams addon for Kodi is exactly the same as the UKTV Now app, cause they are getting all their links and thumbs from the same exact place. So I can either use Sparkys Streams or this app that requires I make an account and use the free version of MX Player, I'll choose Sparkys Streams addon over this bogus app. If you wanna use the UKTV Now app, just install Sparkys Streams, cause its better anyway.
Thanks - it looks like Sparks Streams is down at the moment. I just get script errors whenever I try to open the channel list. Are you getting the same?
Sparky stream is no more.

Its still around it just needs updated. He manages a lot of addons in his repo so a lot of his addons do no get updated all the time. He has at least 30 addons in his repo so its understandable that things do not get updated quickly. Every since I have been using repos way back in the day with XBMC, addons have been hit or miss with how frequently they get updated. I have used addons that get fixed the same day they mess up, and I have used addons that will be broke for several months then outta the blue they will get updated. a good example is the "Watch Wrestling" addon, it has been broke for a couple weeks and the dev Mikey1234 has been posting responses on the support forum for the aaddon saying it will be a while before he gets it updated. Kodi devs do have lives and also other things related to Kodi that may not give them the time to update addon on a regular basis. I have confidence that Sparkys Streams will get fixed when MetalKettle gets around to fixing it.

Hi,
I'm having a FireTV1. My main goal is to install something with that multiple smartphones can be used to control youtube streaming on the firetv.
Important is that it should work without having to login to a youtube account on the firetv. Because eg my wife and me having different youtube accounts, both active on the smartphone.
As both of us should be able to stream youtube content to firetv directly, it would be bad if the firetv has to be logged in to one of the accounts. As in this case only one of our smartphones could take control of the firetv.
If there is some app, but that requires installing custom systems like kodi, that would be fine.
I'm a bit lost in the possibilities and would be happy for any advise how to achieve that.
Thanks!

Your first issue is there is no YouTube app for FireTV. You can thank the Amazon vs Google war for that. You can only screen mirror Amazon devices to Fire TV devices.
Secondly, what you’re describing would function best using a Google Chromecast, that way anyone on your WiFi, can cast YouTube and many other apps, from their phone to the Chromecast device.
Ok I see. Though our primary use is amazon prime video. So I hoped for having just one player...
So there is no way throwing videos on firetv in any case?
(I'd like to avoid screen mirroring. I tried that multiple times without satisfying results).

You can have just one player, but the Fire tv devices are cheaply made. I’ve not had great success with them.
Now I’m using Roku, which still will let me do Amazon video. Not sure on screen mirroring but it does have a YouTube app. I’ll have to check if it will support multiple accounts in the app.
Without doing mirroring, I’m not sure what you mean by “throwing” videos on the screen.
You can cast YouTube to the fire stick pretty easily. I followed this guide to set it up. https://youtu.be/Fpjaqw7CAMg
@Jeffro2700 great, thanks! that worked.
so the only tradeoff is that I first have to start the youtube firefox/silk browser page before I can send videos from my phone to firetv, correct?
If you're a Kodi user with an Android phone, I highly recommend installing the youtube addon for kodi, and installing the yatse remote for kodi app. Once you've done that you can use Share > Play on Media Server (an option enabled with a Yatse installation), and it will cast it to the Kodi system the yatse app is currently controlling. Those are the broad strokes. If you want more info, like how to enable youtube videos > 720P/30 in Kodi, let me know.
Alternatively, you could try sideloading the Smart YouTube TV app from here: https://smartyoutubetv.github.io
