They are probably gone. You should always back up your text messages in multiple apps(Super Backup/SMS backup/Titanium backup) which transform them into an XML file on your ext SD card. I learned the hard way too so it's no big deal. Just remember to do it for the next time.

Does anyone know how to backup texts and contacts? So whenever I flash new firmware I can get them back?
Thanks in advance.
There is an app called sms backup & restore in the market. I use that.
And not sure about contacts because I just automatically download them from my gmail account when setting up the phone.

I use MyBackup Pro v2.3.4 (available from Marketplace) as it allows you to backup apk's/apk's and their data, and also things like Contacts, Calendar events, Bookmarks, SMS, alarm, etc. To use it, you will need root access.
Actually, you see, the problem is that I cannot download ANY apps from the marketplace. It stalls and keeps displaying the message "Starting download..". Hence why I am trying to back everything up and reinstall the ROM.
In settings, there is a backup option that saves all contact / texts onto the SD Card. anyone know where that file is located? I'll ever be grateful if someone can post this information. thanks.
EDIT: The option is in Settings > Privacy > Backup settings.

U must be talking about custom roms. I think the default message application doesn't have the option to backup messages to sd card. And even it doesn't have the option to restore messages from some source. But u can copy the messages to sim. And if u have backed up the messages with some application, the same application will have to restore them. Or u can search the memory card for .txt or .xml files manually. Generally the backed up messages will be saved in text format.

Hey mates,
I want to backup and restore my messages from the root folder.
That is because, I have like 30k Messages in my Inbox and it takes forever for apps like Go Sms Pro or Super Backup to Restore them after I do a reset/Data Wipe.
Long time back, I used to have HTC Wildfire S, which I used to Copy "mmssms.db" into SD Card and copy it back after DataWipe.
But in HTC One X, if I do the same, Messages app force closes after I do a reboot.
According to some Google Research, it deals something with Permissions and Owner group, but no step by step procedure though.
Anyone already doing this? or having faced this problem?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I've gone from Insertcoin ROM to Cyanhenmod 12 5.1.
I've got backups of my old SMS using the stock HTC One M8 messaging app.
How do I restore my backups in CyanogenMod as it only wants to see .zip files but I don't know where they are stored for me to restore these.
Thanks.
I don't know if you have your answer already, but for the sake of researchers...
The stock HTC Messages app creates .hbk files when it backs up it's SMS. Keep in mind MMS does not backup. I have lost my Group Messages because they apparently come in as MMS. (I'm sure this is changeable within settings, but I don't want to change it).
To restore your messages, you'll need to either somehow get the Stock HTC Messages app in CyanogenMod and restore it from there, or... flash a Sense ROM and restore it from there.
The backups are saved in a folder named "sms_backup". This folder is generally located in the root of the internal storage. If you use a file explorer, or plug your phone into your computer, you generally start in the root folder already. (Check your external as well if you don't see the folder). If you don't see the folder, it's safe to create it on your own, and place your backup files there. I suggest placing them in the internal storage, and not the external (for the sake of making sure it works the first time[not saying it won't work, it's just easy to troubleshoot issues if people follow the same steps {malfunctioning SD card could cause an issue with restoring}])
Remember, MMS is NOT backed up using the Stock HTC Messages app for backing up SMS. This means your group messages may not back up. I am now going to start using a 3rd party app to back up my SMS, as so I can backup SMS and MMS.
I have no recommendations on 3rd Party back up SMS applications.

Download nandroid manager from the play store. It will read your backups and can restore SMS, MMS, call logs, Wi-Fi, apps, user dictionary, and some other things I don't use. It's been invaluable to me over the years.
