So my computer doesn't support USB C.
I tried to get a USB C to USB A cable, but I read all kinds of warnings on the internet about how these cables can damage the device.
And since I can't find first party accessories in the place that I live, I hesitate about buying alternatives.
Is there any solution? I only want to unlock the bootloader and flash a custom recovery.

Some USB A > C cables can cause problems, but there's a list of cables that have been tested to work here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1wJwqv3rTNmORXz-XJsQaXK1dl8I91V4-eP_sfNVNzbA/edit#gid=0. Look for approved cables with "Benson" in the Method column. I have a Cambond and a Choetech cable, both work fine.
I snagged a USB 3.1 card for my PC from newegg. Works flawlessly and even allows for quick charge through my PC.

Thanks guys, I will look into your suggestions and pick one.
I take it as there is no way to unlock the bootloader without a PC?

I used a type C to A otg cable (from Walmart) and spliced 2 male usb ends (had a crap ton just make sure they are for data transfer and have all 4 internal cables as some are for charging only though not many) together and bam that's how I got er done.

Correct, however if money is limited and you don't want to wait on shipping and can get an OTG type C you can use my recommendation. Although it won't charge it does allow for data transfer, so unlocking bootloader and flashing twrp.

Can you not buy from the google store online? I thought they shipped everywhere.
I know its kinda expensive but its where I got mine from and knew it would be a good cable from them. (Tested and it was).
Also picked up a spare charger at the same time.

Hi guys. So the only thing I've done to my i747 is root it. I've tried both of the USB host apps in the market (USB Host Controller and StickMount) as well as the "SGS3-Easy-UMS" apk that's around, v1.2beta2 and v1.3beta. Can't attach any USB devices. All my flash drives are FAT32 and work well normally. I even ran the USB Host Diagnostics app and it confirmed that Android API, Rooted API, and Kernel "claim support" but no device is detected.
When I connect to sync, I can only do MTP transfers. This is why I looked into that EasyUMS apk because it apparently also allows to mount the phone on the PC as a USB Mass Storage device. During my search I see numerous people connecting flash drives, controllers, keyboards, and even a USB HDD to their sgs3's.
Because that apk requires busybox, and I have busybox, everything looked OK. However, I did once get an error from that APK about possible non-existant Kernel support. USB Host Diags disagree, as do many video tutorials.
Basically I'd like to know whether or not this is supposed to be working, and if not, then how do I go about making it work? I'd like to mount flash drives for easier use with Linux, and would like to mount the phone as UMS for the same reason. I would also like to use a USB Keyboard as well as a USB gamepad. Am I missing something? Are they all using the international?

got this one, a couple good reviews confirmed that it works with input devices: Amazon product# B005GI2VMG
i mean it's very possible that the seller just buys from random manufacturers without changing the listing. this one that i have is like the cheapest thing on the market so that may be the problem. i wouldn't mind trying a different one for <$5 w/ US shipping if that exists (recommendations?).
Same cable didn't work for me
I bought the same cable, but from a different seller. Amazon ID number B005N55WHI
And I have the same problem. Tried using it with several input devices and with several different roms and I couldn't make it work. Could it be a power issue? Does the USB device that it is being hooked up to have to be powered? I tried it with mice, keyboards, and flash drives, but all of those devices take their power from the bus, not an external source.
glad you posted. hmm. since we both have the same thing and they're both not working, i'm suspecting it's indeed the cable.
i read on a review of a different cable on Amazon where the guy cut open the connector and found no wire connected to one of the pins. i've had thinner-cable wires before that charged/transferred slower than others or didn't work at all on some higher-end devices, could really just be a cheap-out on the manufacturer's end.
i think i'd like to get a different cable. if anyone can recommend an inexpensive one that's confirmed working i'd appreciate it. so i don't have to shoot in the dark.
I got the one with Amazon ID B00871Q5PI and it worked for me. I tried a Dell USB keyboard, a USB mouse, and a USB DAC and they all worked. All take power from the bus.

would it make a difference if it says its for the galaxy s2 and not the s3? im guessing thats why i cant get it to work.

No, would not make a difference. USB OTG is a standard and for now all devices that have USB OTG work with all USB OTG cables. I've used a cheapass one from Ebay with my S2/Note/S3 for more than a year now.
solved for me
so i got the one drothenberger got (actually that particular link was out of stock for the seller so i got the other suggested one that looks exactly the same, title OTG for SGS3 - item# B00871Q5PI) and i'm in business!!!
someone replied to my negative review of the other one i got in the comments and they said theirs worked. i think they just have different products under the same label or lots of defective ones. i'd recommend to just get the ones that specifically say OTG for SGS3 - the extra dollar or whatever is worth it to save the trouble.
thanks again to everyone for the troubleshooting, hope this topic helps others resolve their issues.
Hello XDA members,
Couple of weeks ago, I plugged my charger and then all of a sudden, smoked started coming out accompanied by a burning smell. I quickly took out the charger and now I am not able to charge my phone. I recently sent it back to Samsung for repair but they could not fix it under warranty and was asked to pay $200. Imo that is way too much considering brand new Galaxy Nexus is around $500 where I am from.
Prior to sending my phone, I unrooted my phone, reverted back to stock rom and now I am wondering if there is a way of rooting my phone without having to be connected to the computer via the USB cable. I want to install a custom rom but is that even possible without having the ability to connect to your computer?
Thanks

You can fix the USB port for a few bucks, i seen people say it cost $10, not really sure as i never came across one, but it should be out there on ebay.
You will be looking for a microUSB board

I am in the same situation as sgs064. I have a Gnex that I need to root, but it will not connect to the PC with the USB cable (strangely, it does still charge via USB). I probably will just fix the microUSB port as Mach 3.2 suggested, but in the meantime it would be nice if there was a way to do it without USB. I realize that it probably is impossible, as efrant indicated, but if anyone has any ideas, I'd be willing to try em out. This is an extra Gnex, not my everyday phone, so im willing to mess around with it a lot more.
Thanks.

Hi I am new to this forum and i just purchased and unlocked my Optimus G. Now I'm looking into a OTG cable that may work on this phone as the sprint version, as you all know, does not support Micro SD cards for extra data storage. Now i know they have wireless HDD's that you can carry to store information and Bluetooth keyboards and mice that you can connect to the phone out of the box. But i had External HDD drives that are not wireless and a Wireless keyboard/mouse USB combo all that i would like to run on the phone at a cheap rate. I have read some places that OTG is possibly not capable on this phone. Can anyone verify that this is not possible. Again i am very tech savy and my phone is rooted and unlocked, so if all i need to do is change a kernel or install some files i can definately figure out how to do that. Can anyone clarify this for me and if it is possible put links to cables and tuts on how to do this? i couldn't necessarily find it when i was looking on XDA earlier, and its the only site i really trust for information about my phone.
"USB host", or what is commonly referred to as OTG, is not supported on this device. I'm not sure of the usb controller so I cannot say as to whether or not this is a hardware or software limitation. Either way, I consider this a serious shortcoming, especially on a flagship device.
I was hoping you wouldn't say that. Well if that is the case, can anyone verify if this is not possible because of the software or hardware. If it is because of the software is anyone trying to develop anything for this right now? Thanks again for the verification^

the nexus 4 "doesnt support otg" yet people have modified a kernel to add the feature in. the device does NOT support 5v so you will need to power the hard drive or w/e with external power using a y-cable.
if we have the same usb controller as the nexus 4 then i would assume we'd have to do the exact same thing... custom kernel + y cable for external power. so try and get some kernel devs together and work on on getting that project started for the LS970 device if you really wanna see it happen.

I built in USB host and USB otg support and a art user reported it wasn't working. However I can through up a 3.4 kernel if someone has the cable and power to test it.

If u send me a link to a y cable i will purchase one if that's what's needed. What are the risks to updating to this kernel you mention?....^ somebody on the other thread that was posted here said we have a more complete usb host package than nexus 4. I think he was the thread creator. When i get home ill qoute his post.

That's up to your kernel devs. I outlined everything required for the N4 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=38906771&postcount=2
That said, I once took a look at the kernel files for the Optimus G and it looks like the code for otg/host mode is far more complete than that of the N4. I'm curious if it's able to read the ID pin in its current state..

This is what they had to say on the other forum so far. I don't know any dev's, but if any of you are reading this it sounds like there is a lot of Source Code developed for this already on the Nexus 4. If anyone reading this knows someone capable of doing this if you could forward it to them, because I'm sure I'm not the only person who would like OTG or "USB Host" be available for this phone.
I guess nobody has tried to work this yet? I still haven't seen any kind of development.

Any news so far? In april, it seemed there wan't any modiefied kerned which allowed, as well as in nexus 4, to get the USB host function through an external powered usb hub, is there any now?
usb otg support on LG optimus g 970
I am running an Optimus G 970 and I was attempting to gain support of an external USB DAC called "HiFimediy Sabre".
My first project is to attempt to gain some usb otg functionality.
I created a cable to test since the native 5vdc power out function is not there.
I used my computer to power the cable with 5vdc which was verified by the phone "slow charging".
I ran the "usb host diagnostics". This is a diagnostic tool and it looks at the functionality of the usb port.
Note the following.
1. Phone is rooted.
2. Phone is running all stock software and firmware.
I was asked to reboot to apply a firmware fix by the app after allowing it rooted access.
The app was run one more time following the instructions on the screen and plugging in my pny 16gb usb drive.
It was not able to connect.
I received the following unique code: 188704.
I will follow up when I know more.

Did this ever go anywhere???
Just curious.
I just got a Nexus 7 2013 model from a friend but the charging port doesn't work at all. However, using a QI wireless charger I can still use it. How do I go about getting on TWRP without a working USB?

You can either replace the USB port which isnot expensive actually. hardly 2-4 dollars on Ebay.
There are Rooting methods that work without using cables like STUMP root and TowelRoot but before that, are you developer unlocked?
Quote me in case you expect a reply!

Idk how I feel about soldering on that small of a device. Anyway I think I am locked. I know for sure I never did fastboot OEM unlock (that's what I did on my nexus 4). Or if you mean enabled USB debugging then yes.

Although there are many guides how to repair usb port on your nexus, how about you take assistance from a technician or some mobile shop to replace it for you? I think it'd be worth it if done within 20$ or you can eBay the port and ask a technician to help you (might cost even less).
With a locked boot loader, I'm afraid customs roms/recovery wouldn't be possible and slow qi charge.
What do you reckon?
Sorry for noob question.
I got my new phone yesterday, and with new type C cable, I cannot connect my phone to laptop.. How can I root without having the cable USB-A to USB-C cable.
Please suggest me.. I want to root and install custom ROM.
TIA.
