What MicroSD card to buy for 4K video? - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there! I'm going to buy a MicroSD card for my future LG G3 for long 4k videos recording, but before that I have 2 questions:
1) Does this phone support 4K video recording directly into external MicroSD card??
2) What card would you recommend to buy for smooth 4k video experience? Whether I required to buy Class 10 UHS-I Speed Class 3 (U3) card with 95MB/S write speed or it will be just enough to take Class 10 UHS-I Speed Class 1 (U1) card with 40MB/S write speed?
Thank you in advance,
Vadim

4k on G3 use 30mbps = 2,8MB/s. Class4 it's OK.

class 2 microSD card enough for HD video?

I got a 32GB sandisk card recently and it is class 2.
I think means its read speed is 2MB/s
So if I have a video encoded at a bitrate of 2500 kbps. Does that mean the SD card is too slow to watch the movie off the memory card?
How about something thats 5000kbps? I'm not sure how that translates into how fast the SD card needs to be.
It writes at 2mb/s it will be fine for an hd movie almost all cards read at the same speed regardless of class

On another related note doesn't the SD card buffer onto a part of the phone memory and play from there? Therefore making the speed of the SD card not as important?

[Q] Why class 6 SD card?

Hi all,
I've read in a few places that if you want to run apps from your SD card that you should have a class 6 SD card. Can anyone explain why this is? I've currently got the one that came with the phone, which is class 2. Just want to understand why I need it before splashing out the cash
Thanks
It's all about speed. Class 6 is faster than Class 4 is faster than Class 2. If you are happy with the performance with your Class 2 card, no need to splash out the cash.
yeah its just about speed, the higher the class the faster the r/w speed, you dont really need a class 6 these days tho, maybe in the old days of the g1/hero but not now
There's quite a bit of discussion on this and I'm honestly quite confused over this as well.
The higher classes just means faster write speeds but same read speeds. Certainly, this shouldn't affect the performance of apps that are installed on the card; unless the card is being used for swap memory.
Anyway, I've heard some users with 32GB microSD card (only available in class 2) using app2sd with no ill-effects. I've recently purchased one myself and will be swapping it out later tonight.
newbie on Android here.....may I ask....Im currently using a 16Gb mem card....If I change it to a 32Gb, what are the files that I need to copy to the new card, so that the apps/games currently installed will still run? I noticed there are so many folders inside my memory card now.....which one should I transfer to my new card? Or should I need to re-install the apps?
thanks..

are you using apps2sd? or just running a stock like rom?
9 out of 10 users on this website would not be able to tell the difference in speed by running apps on a class 4 or class 6 cards.

Before the usual flamers get to write on this topic to say high-class cards are useless, it really comes down I think to the time you have available to wait for USB transfers. On a class 2 it takes AGES. I bought a class10 16gb and it's an absolute life changer (i do have a lot of public transport so I make heavy use of my phone as a video player)

Another reason to have a class 4 or faster card in the phone is to have reliable 720p 25fps video recording. On my Class 2 with a2sd+ recording stutters.
thanks for the responses. from what i read previously, it talked about class 6 cards being less likely to be unmounted and causing problems to running applications. does this mean anything to anyone?!

This is the reason when I eventually get the money I'll be getting a 16GB class 4 or 6 card. At the moment 720p is fairly pointless to me since I can't get smooth recordings with my SD card.
Have no issues with my 16Gb Class-2 sdcard. R/W speed enough to handle 720p recording and rockplayer playing avis perfectly.

Are you running A2SD or a2sd+ on your phone? If not, that may be the reason.
The more apps and widgets and stuff is moved to the sd, the more r/w-access happens to the card, which has serious impact on video recording. I really wish the internal memory of the Desire wasn't so small. What the heck did HTC think by putting only 560 MByte internal storage into their android flagship? The SGS has 5 GiBytes!

Incorrect!
The class of the card doesn't tell you the speed of a card - it tells you the *minimum* sustained write speed on a card which is completely unfragmented
A good quality class 2 card can and often will be faster than a poor quality class 6 card.
The two Sandisk Class 2 card I use both write at around 7.5mb/s, which is faster than the class 6 minimums.
Regards,
Dave

That's interesting info! Would explain why I have far fewer problems than most people report with 720p recording onto my class2 card.
So the real answer is: Benchmark your write speed before making any big purchasing decisions on SD cards.

Is class 10 SD card necessary?

From what I understand I would need the class 10 card if I want to record HD video. If I am not going to record video can I get away with class 4?
Thanks for any help!
You do not need a class 10 to record HD Video, a class 4 does the job perfectly well. I had a 32GB class 4 sandisk and it was fine.
I've heard that for smartphones, Class 10 is even worse than lower classes.
That's because class 10 has fast block reading speeding. The problem is that it comes at a price of slow random access reading. If you want to play high bitrate movies from the SD card, higher class will be better for sure. However for day-to-day usage, lower class might make the phone feel faster.

class 4 is good enough for video recording.
iirc, 1080p video on the note is recorded at a bitrate of around 17mbps or so. convert that from bits to bytes and its something like 2.125mb/s minimum required to record videos at 1080p. so anything higher than a class 2 should be fine for playback and recording (unless you encode at a silly bitrate).
the only time i could see anyone really needing the faster class speed would be if you wanted to take 8mp shots in rapid succession. depending on the colour tone of the image you intend to take, the file size can go up to 3mb. at that point, your photos per second will be limited by the speed of your memory card. ie. class 4 = 1 photo per second, class 6 = 2 photos per second, class 10 = 3 photos per second maximum.
Be careful in stores. Went to best buy last night for SD card. Class 4 cards only in phone section but at class 10 price from camera section. Also shelf had classes mixed up only sorted by gb. So pay attention to what your getting

microSD Class 10
What about if you will move (apps2SD) games like Sentinel (TD game) in the microSD, is it necessary to go for c10?
I'm confused on what to buy, c4 or c10.
Need your help!
For me it is. copying movies from PC to my SD card is just painful on class4.
I see that some good class10 cards can write at 20mb/s (sequential), which is 5 times as fast as my current class4 sandisk (4.1mb/s).
The only thing that is holding me back is the price. Once the price comes down a bit ill definitely grab a c10 kingston 32gb.
What about for games you move to your external sd card? Will performance decrease with a c4? Much better with c10?
What can you say about the Ridata 32gb class 10? Is it any good compared to transcend or kingston or sandisk?

Dont know about games, I doubt c10 will make a difference at all....but dont mark my words
As for brand you should look at the particular model rather than judging by just the brand. For instance the sandisk mobile ultra (class 4) beats many of the other class10 cards

I managed to get a class 10 32 gig for about £25. Currently they are very cheap so it might be worth getting it either way.

When I switched from a class4 32GB sandisk to a class10 32GB Lexar, I noticed the smartphone working faster and snappier, probably APP2SD in gingerbread and pictures and videos in the gallery has something to do with that change in response.
In my experience with memory cards and professional equipment, not only we shall choose for class ratings, but also for trusted brands, like sandisk, lexar and transcend.
To sum up, class10 is better than class4, and if the diference in price is not very high, totally worth it, but, there is a lot more difference in daily use between a galaxy note and a HTC Desire.
Class 10 is for marketing, it's totally not needed for smartphone with internal memcard.
You might want to read this thread on why class 4 is better suited for smartphone use.

Do I really need a UHS-I Class 3 memory card for 4K video?

Hello!
I want to buy a memory card for the G4 and it needs to handle 4K videos without any issues. Do I need a class 3 USH-I card or is class 1 enough? Just can't find any answer to this.
Thanks.
I am using a Class 10 Sandisk Ultra 16Gb card with the 60Mbps camera mod for 4k with no issues thus far with recording.

Alright, just a regular non UHS card? Sounds like a quite basic one should be enough.
Btw, do you know a good app that converts 4K video to 1080p video?
No matter what you buy, but make sure to buy an original SD card. These days, eBay and Amazon is flooded with fake chinese cards. I've been cheated by eBay and its seller when i purchased Samsung UVO UHS-1 Class 10 card. The eBay sided with seller.

Which Micro SD card for recording 4k Video?

What micro SD cards are you all using for recording 4k video? Will something like the Lexar 633x do the job or do we need something faster? Thanks!
From my understanding when recording 4k it won't record to SD. It records to internal memory. I am pretty sure that is what the message told me when I put my Samsung 256gb Evo+ card in my phone.

strange, might want to go to camera and check the settings to make sure they stuck to sdcard. I just recorded a 4k video on my 128 Pro card.
Im pretty sure even a class 10 sdcard will work for 4k, class 10 does 10mb/sec so that's good for 80mbit video, don't think 4k bitrate is that high to begin with, on the s7 it was 48mbit.
I'm using the 128GB lexar 633x and can record 4k to my SD card. I picked up mine a few phones back and it has been a solid card. When they finally give us UHS-2 speeds on our phones I'll upgrade to a 256
4k recorded fine on my SanDisk 128gb and also the Samsung Evo

You can also go for SanDisk Extreme 128GB microSD card. With this card you can shoot continuous burst mode, Full HD and 4K Ultra HD video, up to 90MB/s transfer speed.
