Kodi on Fire TV behaving strangely since last weekend - Fire TV Themes and Apps

I have Kodi 15.2 installed on AFTV1. I few months ago I started getting short of storage capacity, so I plugged in a USB stick and moved Kodi to the USB stick using the AFTV interface. I also moved the Kodi data to /storage/extUsb/Android/data/org.xbmc.kodi/files and modified the file /sdcard/xbmc_env.properties accordingly.
I've been using the trick with IkonoTV and Llama to launch Kodi.
This worked without problems until last weekend. On saturday I wasn't able to launch Kodi using Llama. Solution was using FireStarter instead. This worked fine.
Next problem. After launching Kodi it was looking like a fresh installation, this meant that the Kodi data was not being found.
Then I read the entry in aftvnews on "How to partially or entirely move Kodi data to external USB storage" and found out that for OS 5.0.5 I should be using the path /storage/usbdisk/Android/data/org.xbmc.kodi/files, this means I changed extUsb to usbdisk and modified the file /sdcard/xbmc_env.properties accordingly.
This fixed the problem................ for 3 days
Now I cannot launch Kodi. I just get a black screen and it crashes. I tried renaming the .kodi folder so that a new one is created automatically and maybe I could then copy individual folders in order to find out which one is creating the problems. Surprisingly this worked only once. I tried to do this a second time and it didn't create the .kodi directory automatically anymore. It just keeps crashing. Now I don't know how to continue... any suggestion?
By the way, I tried doing backups of my data with both adbFire and AFTV Utility App but none of them worked. The first one starts but does not finish correctly because I loose the ADB connection after some time (is it because of AFTV screensaver?). The second one tells me "/storage/extUsb/kodi/.kodi does not exist". Any idea on how to get a full backup?
Thank you in advance.

Anyone having similar problems? I was finally able to make the backup of my data so I might try to uninstall and install everything again.

http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-rest...-after-updating-to-5-0-5-on-1st-gen-fire-tvs/

Thank you. Re-installing and restoring my data fixed my problems. At least for the last few days

i think thispost is more suitable in troubleshooting thread lol but glad you got it resolved

Failed to start common cache kodi

This is strictly a kodi question if anyone can assist.
My living room install running latest 15 runs problem free. The bedroom, same version, starts with "error! failed to start common cache". This has happened in the past and I was able to fix it, but didn't feel like doing trial& error nor posting a log a the org so I just made a backup of my living room setup and restored it to bedroom.
BUT, I had some issues along the way
1. When I tried to restore the backup it gave a warning that this was a different version of kodi (No, It is not, I doubled checked to make sure. Both are 15 released on july 21st) I went ahead and restored it anyway.
2. Eventhough kodi has no obvious performance issues, restoring a backup from the working setup did not fix the "failed to start common cache" issue right after kodi boots up.
Can anyone explain how this is possible? And just an added detail--before I did the backup and restore I attempted to delete the "commoncache.db" file because it's worked in the past. But of course that did nothing. I'm not overly stressed out because kodi runs fine. I can watch videos as long as i want without any crashes and it's actually been buffer free from online and local sources. It's just an annoyance to see that error overtime. Thanks.
Common Cache Problem with me to using Kodi.
I am using 15.2 RC1 issue of Kodi. I have deleted the commoncache.db myself as well.
Does your copy not close properly? Does it seem to take forever to shut down like 30 seconds or so.
When browsers close they can delete cache files. I am wondering if there is a cleanup going on with Kodi closing.
If Kodi freezes on closing maybe there is an issue there. Kodi does not ever close well except when you first install it.
After a few add-ons and slow it goes from there on. Have you gotten any further with your problem. I need to solve
this annoying problem to. Thanks..

Finally, I figured out a solution...
Settings>My add-ons>Services>Common plugin cache>Configure>turn off Auotstart with XBMC. Restart Kodi and that annoying error should be gone. Haven't noticed any ill-effects. I assume common plugin cache will be utilized, it just won't autostart with Kodi.
Hope this helps!
so you didn't fix the issue you just hid the messages
Had the same issue went to settings for commoncache and changed port from 59995 to 0 i believe port 0 is always open and hey presto no more problems with failed to start commoncache

Clone Fire TV 2 w/ TWRP Backup - possible?

Hey folks,
I would like to clone my fire tv 2 to another one. Was wondering if a simple TWRP-Backup and Restore will work or will it cause problems?
Anyone tried that?

You could try it... but in the past people have had problems. Won't break anything a factory reset can't solve. You can also use Titanium Backup to backup individual apps.
Oddly enough, I stumbled on this thread while working on this today.
I was able to successfully clone a fire TV 2 brand-new out-of-the-box never turned on using this rooting method with the A-A USB cable and TWRP by rbox/zeroepoch posted on AFTVnews.
( sorry I can't post a link to the rooting method because this is my first post.)
However, it hasn't been thoroughly tested and I do have some concerns. ( I will mention later)
NOTE: the following assumes you have already rooted your Fire TV and installed TWRP. You will also need a keyboard ( i'm using logitech K 400) and a microSD card. Also, have your device's serial number ready before you start this.
Here's how I did it:
1. I made a backup using TWRP onto a microSD card. I chose to back up both system and user data. Then safely eject the microSD card.
2. Put the microSD card into the ROOTED Fire tv you want to clone to. Power it up and boot into recovery mode.
3. Click on ADVANCED, FILE MANAGER. Navigate to external_sd/TWRP/BACKUPS/(SERIAL NUMBER)/ then choose "select current folder" on the bottom right of the screen. Choose RENAME FOLDER. Rename it to the serial number of your current device. It can be found on the box.
4. Navigate back to the main screen and choose RESTORE. Click on "select storage" on the bottom right, select microSD card, and hit OK. The backup should now appear.
5. Click on the back up and swipe to restore. VoilĂ !
This works and I didn't need to even register the device. Though that concerns me that there could be an issue if it wasn't registered.
One thing I haven't figured out is that although it installs the apps, applies all the settings (like blocking updates etc.) it didnt transfer my Kodi build. It installs all the apps, and it even keeps the configuration for firestarter, but I have to manually upload my Kodi build after that.
I will keep testing
is this working?

Have you done any more testing? Were you able to get kodi to transfer correctly? and did you unpair your remote and unregister your fire tv before the cloning?

I didn't unpair the remote or on register, but that is totally possible and I will add that. Recently I've added the xposed modules and I did a back up and it works perfectly, even backed up Kodi. I'm not sure what was different before, I followed this exact same process.

Then was trying to restore all of them on another with changing backup folder serial number and when another FireTV Stick 4K has been rebooted it stuck on the FireTV logo ((( And I don't know what to do with it know. Could you help, please?

SPMC not launching

I can't for the life of me get SPMC to launch on my firetv 2. It's rooted with 5.2.1.0 prerooted rom that was just installed about a week ago. I had the same issue on prerooted rom 5.0.5.1 as well. I can get to the first run screen, the bar loads at the bottom, and the app will quit. I will relaunch the app and it'll stay stuck on a blackish/grey screen unless I hit the home button. Kodi works fine. I've tried spmc 15.2, 16.1.1 and 16.3 with the same results. Internal or external sd card. I've made sure all traces of spmc were deleted and re-installed but same thing. Anyone else have any problems with this?? I remember version 16 had problems with OS5 but that was supposed to have been resolved with 16.1.1.

Thanks for responding, i don't believe it to be a common issue as there would more posts or threads about it. I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this and if so how did they resolve the issue?
After playing around with it for the last few days, I've discovered that I can get SPMC to launch but only if my microsd card isn't inserted. The only thing on that microsd card is my Kodi data. Can anyone shed any light on this?? I've been able to run kodi and spmc on this aftv 2 in the past, but i can't remember if I've ever been able to get spmc running since moving my Kodi data to external.

No you're not the only one d3adpool with this issue. I have same issue and I too have my kodi data on the SD card. I was thinking of putting kodi back onto the local drive to see if that made a difference but just haven't had the time to do so. Sounds like from what you say, there maybe something to this.

That worked for me, moving kodi data back to internal storage and spmc works flawlessly. It was frustrating trying to figure this out as I tried different versions of spmc, moving spmc from internal to external, deleting all spmc data, etc.

Yes, it worked for me as well. I too tried different things but it was all no go until I did what you did. Very strange but glad it worked.

Writing to SD Card - FireTV 2

Hello,
Not sure if I should start a new thread or continue off the one that ended in July.
Spent a few hours last night trying to get Kodi and Retroarch to write to the MicroSD card. Read plenty of articles on xda and in other areas and it seems fairly simple:
1. Create a sandbox area for the program on the SD Card
2. Point the installs there
For example I have:
/storage/sdcard1/Android/data/com.retroarch/
From my understanding, retroarch should be able to write anything into the com.retroarch folder without permissions, yet no matter how many times I tried it could not save files to this location (save states, saves, configs, etc.). I tried with Kodi and the scraper for Rom Collection Browser (which unfortunately is useless, back to Gamesome) could not put any artwork in it's respective folder.
Am I missing something? Does having the program installed on the SDCard effect this at all?
What I ended up doing is setting up a save folder on the FireTV while loading the roms from the SD Card, not a big deal but between Kodi and the Rom artworks the FireTV is going to fill up fast, I would love to get them over to the SDCard.
Thanks for any suggestions.
I run my Kodi through the sd card switch trick to save my box data filling too quick cause all my data goes to my sdcard, then i create a sandbox inside my Kodi location where all the files are.
Heres the link mate -
http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-partially-or-entirely-move-kodi-data-to-external-usb-storage/
The only downside ive had with using this method is that when using Ares Wizard to install a few things (not addons) it wont download because its use to the original location so it throws back an error, if i need anything from there i just do it from a firestick & then transfer to the aftv2. For me id sacrifice that for more storage space plus most fire tv owners have more than one device in there household.
Hope this helps mate if so press that thanks button
Kodi can only write to it's own environment on the sdcard.
Create your directories you want to write to under -
/storage/sdcard1/Android/data/org.xbmc.kodi/files/.kodi/
then you can write just fine.
Thanks for the link, I had previously ran across that guide, followed it completely and was unable to open Kodi (it would go to a black screen and then crash back to the home page). I am sure it is something simple that I am missing, I think I will try clearing everything on the card and the FireTV and starting over.

@ Bevnrick - I was never adding that last .kodi folder, maybe that was my issue?

Banging my head--WHY is AFTV automatically moving data?

I'm really confused so I'll try to provide details I can recall...
My AFTV gen 1 with OS5 kodi install was a little glitchy so eventually wound up doing a clean install.
This came AFTER MANY attempts to preserve my data.
The last 2 times I tried this I completely wiped every bit of kodi data I had on internal and USB. I installed kodi Jarvis.
The 1st time I scanned sources and it populated fine. But when I exit kodi then relaunch it I'm greeted with what looks like a blank install!
To sum up, it appears like when I exit Kodi it sends Kodi data to my usb BUT there are no settings in place to actually read that data so Kodi is blank.
Last time I made certain to remove everything. Then I took my sources.xml from my other aftv (same setup) and moved it to the problem aftv. I start up kodi, all seems fine--my movies and TV shows are there. I exit and POOF! Its gone again. If I delete my kodi data from usb drive Kodi works again but when I exit it repeats the cycle.
I'm stumped. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
***I think the issue would be resolved if someone could just tell me why data keeps exporting to my usb drive. I keep deleting it but Kodi winds up back on my usb once I exit.

This took 5 seconds on google.
Backing up Kodi is as simple as copying over the userdata folder, btw. If you don't know how to copy files, learn to use adb and get to know the filestructure of kodi a bit better using a file explorer on the Fire TV. Or just use a File explorer and copy the userdata folder to a networkdrive (Total commandar f.e. has a lan plugin), or a usb stick, or... If you don't know what a folder is... Try to learn that as well...

I appreciate the help but Ive been using Kodi since Frodo and aftv gen 1 since June 2014. Ive been through numerous kodi versions and never has the aftv just defaulted to moving all the data to usb...
In fact Im pretty sure it doesn't because theres methods available specifically for aftv to properly move data to usb.
I have to take a closer look at my other aftv. Its running the same kodi version.
***Btw my bandaid was to remove my usb stick and copy sources.xml from my other aftv. It works fine but of course not having external storage isnt a good option.
