Front camera is bad? - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well i just bought a Nexus 5x. Took a few selfies with it. And they turned out utter-crap compared with my Galaxy s6. Heck even my LG G2 produces better results???
Is my unit faulty or what?

Well, the frontal camera's quality is good but the colors are a little bit flat and that doesn't look beautiful. + the HDR is bad too.

Crap? I don't think so especially with HDR+ on. It's the only front facing camera I've used that can get faces with a bright background like a sunset, yet neither is over or under exposed. Highly recommend using HDR+ every time.

Yes your unit is faulty. The device is fine.

I don't go for that hypothesis often but it might be a faulty unit. I've had the S6, (even the S7) and the 5X front camera is way better. In any situation. In low light, you' ll have a little bit noisier image but way more details than with the over sharpening that Samsung does.

[Q] Camera Question

I was messing with a Galaxy 2 today, and noticed that it had a 8mp camera on it. I thought the quality of the pictures were also really nice. How does the Nexus's camera compare to the one that is on the galaxy 2? Also, why would the downgrade the camera? I know that mega pixels isn't everything when it comes to pictures, but is the nexus 5mp camera better somehow that the 8mp that comes on other recent devices?
Thanks
Unfortunately there is nothing special about the 5mp camera on the nexus.
I can't speak for the galaxy s2, but coming from a Droid 1 which also has a 5mp camera I can say the nexus completely blows it away, very sharp too. Same MP, big difference. There are many discussions on what makes a 8mp camera suck and say, a 5mp be better, ill avoid that road but say it is more than just MP!
And as a second thought, its a phone! The nexus camera is more than adequate, and if you really need top quality, buy a real camera
Galaxy Nexus Bugless Beast 4.0.3 cdma
While there is more than MP the best unfortunate truth is that most high end phones have better sensors AND more MP

I'm not 100% sure but I believe megapixel has to do with the size of the photo?
Quality of the camera doesn't really depend on the megapixel.
Despite saying that, the galaxy nexus camera isn't that good. The software is ok but I think its worse then my 5megapixel camera that used to be on my galaxy s captivate.
Please correct me if I'm wrong. Just my thoughts.

my old htc Dinc got a 8mp camera, to compare the both, i dont see any differences beside the GNex came are godly fast.
I can coax better shots out of my Dinc...
That and stock software takes terrible shots, not even at the expense of speed, just poor decisions in noise reduction.

I wonder if they choose to use a smaller sensor to keep the camera so fast. Maybe the larger sensors weren't performing as well speed wise. But I agree others, it isn't the best out there.

bummer. the camera is one of the main deciding factors for me. i'll be upgrading from a Dinc, and while it served me well the past two years, I really would like to upgrade to a better phone cam, since the Dinc's cam is terrible at low light situations and can overexpose at outdoors. the flash on it is terrible also, being overly bright, which just washes out the photo. do i have another option in verizon, or is the iphone 4s my only other option? my upgrade is due now by the way. thanks.
MP is just the size of the photos. How good a camera is has a lot more to do with just the MP count. However, MP count does play an important role in phone photography. 99% of the phone camera lenses have no optical zoom. All the "zoom" are digital zoom, which just means cropping and enlarging the original picture. In this case, all else equal, the higher the MP, the better the "zoomed" result. Moreover, and very unfortunately, MP count aside, the lens and the sensor on the Galaxy Nexus are pretty poor.
The camera isn't amazing, but I would definitely not suggest anything but the GNex since it's all round just a perfect phone, you'll regret not getting it IMO.

If I were you on verizon I would get the Rezound. It has a really nice camera compared to the Gnex and it also has a 1280x720 screen and even a more powerful GPU (but not CPU). I had it before I switched it for my gnex but I can't stand not having an AMOLED screen otherwise id still have that phone.

yea i was trying out that phone in store. it's a bit of a brick though, and i wasn't impressed with the screen as well. any other ones coming out soon that i should wait for? will verizon get the galaxy S3?
Im impressed with the GNex cam. I do a lot of custom paint and mostly metallics so i like to take very close pics and they always come out great

[Q] Improving Camera quality

Hi, I bought a Galaxy Nexus on august and it is a really good device, the only thing that I dont like about it is the quality of the pictures of its camera, is it just me or this device has a relly crappy camera?
Have any of you tried to improve its quality using the GNtoolkit or any other method?
If so, please advice...
Thank you very much
Lol the toolkit? really?
The camera performs poorly in low light, and nothing is really going to fix that except... more light. In well lit and composed pictures, the camera has the capability to produce good pictures. They turn out pretty well. This camera isn't the best, but isn't nearly as bad as people like to think. Just check out some of the pictures in the General section. Lots of great stuff in there. It's not impossible to take good pictures with the GNex.
Most issues with the camera can be attributed to the photographer, not the device. There are many camera apps that can help you achieve different affects with your camera (like HDR, scene modes and editing), and there are even some in the stock Gallery.
Don't use the 'zoom'
Beamed from my Grouper.
The best apps that I think produce good quality pics with the Gnex camera are Vignette and HDR Camera+. Honestly I don't ever use the stock camera because I feel they produce the worst pics.
I mentioned the toolkit because I saw an option there, so... Im pretty ****ed right? LOL

the camera is awesome. you probably need to learn how to use it correctly.
I think it is pretty decent. Again I don't compare pics with other phone because missing a few pixels isn't going to make huge difference.

Beats, and I mean beats the **** out of my Thunderbolt's 8MP camera. Low light, lots of light, magic, doesn't matter, Nexus wins every time.
Magic doesn't exist, just making my sanity clear.

I have found that the gnexus camera out performs my HTC sensation , lumia 800 iPhone 4s when it comes to low light pictures. They come out a lot less blurred and precise than the other phones. Day photos are perfectly good for a mobile phone. Want an amazing camera buy a SLR , Facebook photos it does just fine

[Q] Is there anyway to improve the Note 8s camera?

First let me say i love almost everything about my Note 8, except the camera i understand its a tablet so the camera wasnt a main feature but coming from the Note 2 i did expect the same quality camera if not slightly improved, but my Note 8 camera is super slow at taking pictures and the quality of the images are not great and easily blurred, it also lacks all the slow motion features of the Note 2 video recorder and in general i find it poor
So my question is is there anyway to improve the Note 8s camera with software from the Note 2 or an app or any other tweaks people know of. Or is this down to cheap low quality camera hardware and im stuck with it?
Cheers

I think it's the low quality hardware. I really thought I could use the camera to scan documents, but it's too bad for that.

The only thing you can do is try and hold it's hand. Such as making sure there is plenty of ambient lighting to compensate for the tiny aperture.Something like Sony's clipon camera's in theory but not likely worth the effort/cost vs just using a point'n'shoot and packing a card reader/usb otg cable.
It's very basic hardware, at best equal to the Galaxy Nexus or worse than that.
Manufacturers have unfortunately relegated the cameras in tablets to being pretty crappy ones. Likely to keep costs down. And also probably for the fact that most folks will use their phone for their "snapshot" camera much more frequently than their tablet. And even though the Note 2 is a "phablet", its really more phone than tablet in form and function.
Likely not a lot you can do about image quality. You can try a 3rd party app, to see if the result is any better. But the culprit is likely the low cost camera module.
Ah well, cheers for the replys i did think that i was unlikely to beable to improve it with software, ill just have to get my girlfriend to stand more in the light when im taking pics of her in her undercrackers

How bad is the camera vs flagships of 2 years ago?

Not expecting S7 edge/7+ quality here.
Coming from S5, is it better/worse/equal?
Seems like this is the only weakness of the device, at $250 on LeMall Black Friday can't ask for much more!
Snapdragon 821 with 4000 battery, it makes everyone else look like a joke.

It's better than my S5, Nexus 6 and OnePlus one cameras. It's as good as my 6p and oneplus 2 camera, it's worse than my S6 edge camera and worse than my wife's iPhone 6s camera...just purely objectively but that's how I would rank it in the phones I have used in the last two years.

I also have a nexus 6p, and boy oh boy do i disagree. 6p camera is hundreds of miles ahead, in daylight its quite better with details and especially with dynamic range, and in low light photos are about same quality as 6p front camera lmao. But i find 6p camera to be one of the best of all smartphones, so no biggie. Pro 3 has very decent goodlight photos, definitely better than s5, but really suffers in not so good conditions. Video quality is also average at best. To summarise camera is more than decent for social networks and stuff, but if you are into photography and want good pictures i wouldnt recommend this phone. It has many strong sides, camera isnt one of them.

I agree with you mostly, but the speed of the 6p camera is really poor. In low light 6p takes good pictures, but only with the HDR mode, and then it becomes even slower.
LP3 is a much faster camera.
No, I am not into photography. For regular 'social networks and stuff' photography I will keep LP3 camera ahead of 6p.
Adding a fun fact. I often video record long class lectures. While using a 6p for recording a 720p video of 90min, the phone gets really hot, and loses more than 50% of the battery. LP3 for the same scenario still runs cool, loses only 20% battery. I guess it's the generation gap of the CPU.
The 6p camera, like the 6p in general was a love hate thing for me. Everytime I thought it had an amazing camera I would get a string of crap photos. Not sure why. Just like everytime I thought it was an amazingly fast phone I would go through a stretch where it was terribly laggy. Felt like I was always factory resetting it...

My note 4 camera is way much better than leeco pro 3
Let's just post some night shoot from the LP3 to compare with our older phone.
The camera is the exact same module that's inside the one plus 3T. It's actually a good camera. The issue is its implementation. The camera can get way better with the right update or ROM.

All professional reviews? Where? show me where they used Google Camera app on Le Pro 3. I have my own comparison. iPhone 7 is pathetic compared to Nexus 5X. Not even better than Galaxy S4.
Here is my comparison of LePro3 using Google Camera App vs. Default vs Default HDR.
Weidas said:
Yes, 1 random photo of a teddybear is sure a "comparison" lmao. And yes, suddenly using a google camera, makes 1.12micrometer camera sensor perform better than 1.55micrometer sensor in nexus lmao. Can you be more ridiculous? Oneplus 3 uses same sensor, + it has ois and way better software optimisation than le pro 3, and its camera is still **** compared to nexus 5x/6p.

I can produce the same amount of comparisons with the same amount of nonsense you are talking about. Galaxy S7 has smaller sensor than Nexus 5X/6P but it peformed better or equal in comparison.
With a little bit of post processing also low light photos should be ok. I think the camera is good enough for me. Attached is an OOC shot and the post-processed version.

Here's the detail was missing~
It's considerably better than my Moto X Pure (aka Style). Much more so in decent light. Just a small bit better in lower light. For $299 (now less even) it's nothing to complain about for sure. If it was on a $650 flagship, I'd be a little disappointed but could still live with just fine if everything else was on point. For me, everything already is on point with the LP3 personally. A CM or AOSP would be just icing on the cake!

I came from the 5x and usually don't think much of camera and audio haters so I don't pay much attention to reviews in these areas. But oh my this camera sucks! Which Google camera apk works with HDR with this phone, maybe that can help it? Play store does not offer Google Camera app for this phone, anyone recommend a link?
Camera seems much improved when using CM 13 or even the Google Camera app on the stock ROM. It still leaves a little to be desired but I like how quick and responsive it is.
Tried Google camera. It doesn't support HDR in Google camera. Pictures in low light are actually worse with the Google app

Coming from N5x, I agree with you. With HDR, not only you get better DR but much better color rendition, even in low light.
With LePro3, Google Camera will not give you HDR but you do get good color rendition of Google Camera. Try the 2.7.010 version linked below. Other versions do not really work, at least on CM.

Camera quality

I'm not 100% convinced about how good this camera is.
I heard the mate 9 had an update which made the camera better. Will this apply to us as well?
my note 7 camera was 100 times better. I'm quite disappointed with this.
The mate 9 with update was better. Had both.
I have the Mate 9 Pro, which is the same hardware as the PD. Camera is IMO worse than the one in my iPhone 7 (not Plus). Front camera takes very yellow photos. Optical stabilizer is working too hard on the rear camera.

S7 Edge doesn't impress me particularly, either - too brown/yellow in the tint on the rear camera for my liking.
Quite pleased with this pic..
Not often I get to take artsy pics but I'm thinking this one is worth sharing.
I think that camera is pretty good in even low light situations, it takes pretty good shots.
I take back what i said about the camera...
Took a pic of a plane in the air..
I then zoomed in and took another pic...
Also took some pics of my kid on a rather fast fair ride and he came out completely clear!
Impressed!
The camera is for me quite good but in low light it is not as good as my xperia x performance. The colours could be more vivid though
