No, you are just flashing the recovery and a zip file for root. Does not wipe data.

Would it be wise waiting until an OTA update comes? You would think there would be one just for misc bugs, as well as hopefully multi window support.

ota not working
So I just have twrp installed so i could use wifi tether. I just got the OTA last night for the security update. I knew it would fail after the reboot. I went into TWRP selected install, from /cache were the ota was sitting. It appeared to be working but failed at the end.
error message: assert failed getprop ro.secure =1
Is there anyway around this?
So as of right now there is now way to root with the latest OTA installed correct? I just got my Note II yesterday and the OTA came through this morning and I, without thought, accepted and installed it. Is there a way to root or need I wait until a method releases with the latest OTA?

You can root using odin or cf auto root or twrp or cwm etc. No more exonys abuse.

You can still root using any method other than the exynos abuse app. Just flash a custom recovery In odin and then flash a root.zip

No way around that. Easy way to explain, need to reset your binary counter using triangle away. Must be run as many times as you need to get it down to 1, then you must unroot using su preferably so it can cleanly do it. Then you must install the stock recovery then you can update. Hope that helps. I just did all this today, hence that's why I'm posting this late. Took me a while to figure out why it kept failing. Triangle away is a must if you want to do it without installing a rooted rom with update built in.

Your talking about data on the network correct ??
CM will contain the proper APN's to get network connection and data.
PA may not....
Once you flash the Rom you want, go into the APN settings and check...
You can find the entire APN list for all carriers in the dev section under the everything thread...and verify you have the correct one. If not, create a new one and save it to the new rom....done
Radio images will generally not be changed unless you push a stock build via Odin. so you wont need to worry about that unless there is a problem....g

Only official updates can be flashed using the stock 3e recovery. ...generally speaking. .
You will need a custom recovery. .
I prefer TWRP...but CWM is perfectly fine also. ...TWRP gives you more options and has better support. .
Edit: always use the latest version of recovery. .regardless of which recovery you choose. ..
And once you have your recovery flashed..run a full backup of your current rom. Keep 1 copy on the external SD card, and send a copy to PC as well.
Then you are prepared.
Note: TWRP will allow you to back up the EFS folder and modem information. You select these as options in the backup process.
It is always wise to select yes on these files. ..or rather. ..all files until you are comfortable with the flashing process. ..as these files contain your IMEI number and other critical files needed for device function. ...g

SENT FROM MY SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE 2 USING TAPATALK 4 BETA
Mobile Odin will push your new recovery just fine. ..
Ignore the bootloader altogether. ...because once you have root with a custom recovery you are unlocked. .
You can push any kernel using a .zip file from your new recovery. ..
Download mode is opened by turning off the device. ..
Then push and hold volume down. ..home button. ..and power. ....
Once DL mode is open....push volume up when ready to flash a file. ..
Use PC Odin. ...IMHO.....and don't change and fields when it opens on PC.....g
Thanks for the help. I'm a total noobie to the note 2. With the chorus ion you had to have unlocked bl for every thing

SENT FROM MY SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE 2 USING TAPATALK 4 BETA
For TW based Roms.....I really like saber kernel ...
For AOSP....I like the dual boot devil kernel ...
Both run excellent ...and have good battery life ...
Yes you can switch back to TW roms easily...so long as you "fully" wipe the device before flashing...
The radio image is to be left alone...as it will not be touched in the flashing process ....g
What touch wiz based ROM would you recommend. I tried the noteorious prime ROM and i was having lte problems so I'm looking for another. Right now I'm running pa 3.55 and it's a real battery killer so I'm looking for one with touchwiz base that's smooth fast and has great battery management

I am trying to install the W03 Slim ROM V7 on my Tmobile Galaxy Note 3 through Philz recovery and I am getting stuck in a boot loop.
These are the steps I tried
1. Used Chainfire's root method to root Kitkat 4.4.2 (which was updated through kies). Used the N9005 and not N900T like the instructions asked me to
2. Flashed Philz Recovery through Odin
3. Copied the ROM and Gapps to my Phone.
4. Rebooted into recovery
5. Wiped Data/Factory reset, Install from Zip, wipe cache, wipe dalvik and reboot.
This is where I get stuck. The phone boots with these words on the top left, "Recovery not enforcing seandroid" or something along those lines and keeps booting. I booted back to Recovery and 'Re'wiped' the phone/did a factory reset, but nogo
So I downloaded the right stock firmware from Sammobile, installed through Odin and repeated the steps and still the same issue.
What am I doing wrong? I made sure I am flashing hltetmo (for TMo Note 3).
Correct me if im wrong but if you flashed the new bootloader I don't think you can go back to 4.3 roms anymore.

Sounds like a Recovery issue to me. Please look one more time and make sure if you used PHILZ TOUCH that you did in fact flash 6.19.3 HLTE. and not HLTETMO. Im also using philz and no problems flashing. However before it was known that this was the version to use, I did loop at the same point when experimenting with other versoins. Also, check your MD5 and verify that it is a good download.... maybe re download just for gits and shiggles.

Thanks everyone. It does look like it is the bootloader issue.
How do we determine if a particular ROM supports a particular bootloader version? At least the ROMs I have sort of explored and wanted to try, dont mention that anywhere. Or maybe they use some geek term to reference that but I dont understand it. How do noobs like me determine the bootloader version and compatibility of a particular ROM (before flashing and finding out the hard way)???

I've been searching and reading for last couple days and haven't been able to find a definite answer. I'm using note 2 i317 at&t with stock 4.3 out of the box. I've been able to root it and get past Knox successfully. My question is can I install a custom recovery using stock 4.3? I'm wanting to use xposed framework and I want to be able to make a backup and have recovery optons. I've heard it may not be possible on 4.3 due to possible locked bootloader and the Knox thing. Any help is appreciated.
Just flash your custom recovery using Odin...
The Knox bootloader is generation #1...and does not prevent the flashing of custom recoveries or kernel images. .
Edit:...custom recoveries will trip the Knox counter...and void the device warranty. ..
Once you have a custom recovery. ..you can create your full nandroid backup...
Then you'll be able to do anything you want with roms etc....g

Not exactly. ..
Once you root...or flash a custom recovery. ..you will trip the Knox counter...(bootloader flag)
Effectively. ..that will void warranty...
However. ..This flag will not effect using your nandroid backup to restore the device if you should need it... (store that backup on your PC for safety)...
But if you don't care about warranty. ..then a revert to stock 4.3 is quite easy...minus the tripped bootloader flag....g

Dont you need to change to read/write?
I have one more question on the 4.3 boot loader thing. Am I able to flash Roms that are based on an earlier android version like 4.2.2 since I am on official 4.3 boot loader? I was looking at flashing a ported miui v5 ROM but I'm pretty sure its 4.2 based.

Sry if I seem like I'm thread jacking but just wanted to clarify something. So with the AT&T note 2 on the stock ota 4.3 we can still install a custom recovery and flash custom roms and kernels or does it have to be 4.3 touchwiz based roms? If so can someone tell me the steps to do so?
The only reason I'm asking is I have both an att not 2 and a Verizon both on 4.3 and with the Verizon note 2 I had to use safestrap to flash a custom rom but can't flash kernels (so I'm not really new to flashing and all but new to the att scene and wanted to make sure bc I was told that with a locked bootloader I couldn't flash roms and a custom recovery and don't want to break my phone)
Thanks (also I only had an att note 2 is so I can get 4g lte on straight talk but I like having the note 3 features)
Again thanks for the help as of right now my att note 2 is a paper weight and if I can flash any custom rom on stock 4.3 it'd be great bc at least I wouldn't have wasted my money haha

I do not think so ( but I could be wrong ), I am using 7.1.1 and have TWRP and SU installed and working.
You can always just flash factory images from Google to go back to stock anytime, its pretty easy.
