Has anyone found a Micro USB card reader for MSDHC cards out there?

With the announcement that ICS will support USB Mass Storage, I was wondering if anyone had found a Micro USB card reader similar in size to the USB Jig shown in this thread. I saw one a long time ago that was used to flash phones of a specific make, but I can't remember where I saw it. Can someone help me?
PS, I know this is a question, but I figured it fell under Accessories. Please don't burninate me.

Sort of, but a micro USB port, not a full size USB. Like the port on the bottom of the phone.

Well i don't think they make things like that for consumers, but from that video hey seems to have just used a regular microUSB cable.

As I said, I saw one out there for a specific phone maker that they use for flashing. I can't imagine that someone in China would not make them for sale. I'll keep digging, I guess. Thanks for the response, though.

No, but that's the size I'm looking for. An MSDHC reader that size with a micro USB plug like that has.
I have that on the way to put in the toolkit, though. A USB jig comes in handy.

I thought that announcement was that ICS, having usb mass storage support would mean that it's like how current android roms are. When you plug into the computer you can put it into usb mode to transfer files. It was previously thought that ICS would not have that and would require transfer thru MTP protocols only. I dont think it means you could just attach storage via micro usb such as external sd/hard drive.

No, they're talking about hooking up external storage. Someone was talking on Reddit about hooking up a dongle and a USB flash drive to their phone and how it worked for extra storage when they were going on a flight.

I believe what you are trying to do requires usb host support but I know what I'm saying is not the answer you are looking for so, I'll leave this be for now. Good luck in your search.

I'm pretty sure sure our phone does have host mode support. So you can get a USB host mode cable on ebay for $2 shipped, and attach a standard USB drive. Not the compact solution you are looking for, but it will work.

I have been searching crazy lately (like you, I can't believe that some manufacturers did not had this good idea ?!), but nothing !!!

Samsung galaxy S3 OTG for USB 3. hard drives

Hi there,
I have a samsung galaxy S3 (rooted) and have recently purchased OTG cable. The problem is that when I connect s3 with Hitachi Touro (mobile USB 3.0) through OTG cable hard drive does appear in files. I have installed paragon NTFS and stickmount apps but it doesn't seem to connect even though a message keeps appearing "usb connector is connected". Hard drive gives a clicking sound when it is connected with S3 but works perfectly with the computer.
Does anyone know solution to this?

I've heard of some people having problems when connected to a usb 3.0 port on their computer and have to connect to a 2.0 port instead. Maybe related?

USB 3.0 I don't think is supported. What I've seen people do is use a 2.0 cable extension with their 3.0 device. As this downgrades it to 2.0 because they should be compatible with 2.0 just won't have the insane speeds as 3.0. Or you can get a USB hub and plug it in that way.

Splatdotsplat is correct. That clicking sound are the heads resetting to the park position. This usually happens when drives are not getting enough power. When the drive spins up it peaks its power consumption and cuts out because there is not enough so the heads reset. Portable or not that is the issue. I have seen this happen with some portable drives on computers (especially larger capacity). A lot of times the solution can be as simple as using a shorter cable. Sometimes it doesn't work.

as stated above, the only way to run external hdd's of any kind is to be sure they're powered, even some thumbdrives will draw more power than the phone can provide and you'll notice your batt life take a steep dive (as did my Galaxy Nexus w/otg on an HP 16gb thumbdrive)
power the drive through a powered hub and you're good to go!

This is why i recommended using a USB powered HUB as the HUB will give enough power to the external hard drive.

Having the same issue myself, otg cable with Samsung portable 500GB external HDD and stickmount pro works fine with my Nexus 7,but won't work with my Galaxy even though it recognises the HDD, so do you think a USB hub would be the solution, and can anyone recommend one

Just to throw in some info. I do agree about the hdd not getting enough power as the cause for the clicking. I have a 500gb hitachi drive that does that if a long usb cable is used. The drive didn't come with a power adapter but instead came with a short usb cable that had two heads. allowing it to draw power from two ports. It also had a port for an adaptor though.
When testing with my Samsung Galaxy sIII It doesn't work unless I have the hd running via external power or have the second usb connector on the cable connected to a charging usb cable. Both options charge the phone while the hd is connected to the phone.
The usb cable with the double ports actually works well for me. I have the first port connected to the otg cable that I made and the second connection connected to a usb extender that is connected to my 2A tablet charger. That way I can charge at the same time.

Hi the problem i basically power as in the amount of current your device requires, i know that the standard specifications of the original 2.0 interface is about max 500mA and 5Vdc per port, in some cases the maximum output current is even smaller due to hardware restrictions, this can lead to difficulties when trying to power something like an external hard drive. Therefore a long cable will also give a problem due to the resistance of the material, because the required voltage level is not high enough.
I do not know if there is a spec sheet containing information about the output capabilities of the usb port, if there is one i recommend using that to match an external hard drives, if you do not want to use an external power supply.
Edit: you could also use an external power bank/battery pack but i seems a bit bulky

USB OTG works out of the box for low power devices. I havent seen/read anything stating USB 3.0 works on the S3. I have a 1TB hard drive my brother gave me, its not the newer ones that are ssd so it has a power adapter with it and it works perfectly with my S3. Going to be using it in a few minutes to back up my internal SD.

I'm plannig to buy the OTG piece ! so as of now is possible to connect the hardrive to the phone or not yet !?

Is there even a driver and an app to do such a thing? As I see it the USB port is configured as an external storage device to connect to a computer not the other way around. What you are doing is connecting two storage devices together. There's no way I would ever connect anything to my phones USB port that requires power. If I were to, it would be through a powered hub.

I have read that you connected your S3 with external powered HDD. I bought yesterday the genuine samsung OTG cable and it is working only with memory stick and joystick controller. Don't know why it is not working with my external powered HDD - 500 GB WD. Any ideea ? My S3 is not rooted.

No, nobody is going to have a recommendation for a powered USB hub.
It's a trivial, generic, piece of kit you buy nearly anywhere for under US$10 (unless you're a complete sucker.) Just make sure whatever you get *includes* a power supply.
Get one in the shape of a person, or a kitty cat, or a Tardis, whatever thrills you.

that's not quite accurate. when you plug your phone into your PC, the drivers that you installed will see your phone as a usb device (or media device) and allow you to use your phone as such
an OTG (on-the-go) cable allows you to connect a storage device to your phone, such as a thumb drive or external hard drive (powered or not) and then your phone acts like your PC and uses that device as storage

I can confirm that in my case forcing my ADATA HV610 1 TB disk to USB 2.0 mode worked. The trick is to use a standard micro-USB cable (e.g. the one that comes with your charger) instead of the standard cable that comes with the HDD.
More detail:
The common USB 3 cable which comes with most new HDDs uses USB 3.0 Micro-B plug which, in practice, is a micro-USB with a "half-micro-USB" next to it. The part most people don't know is that you can use a common micro-USB cable (as the one from your charger) to connect your HDD to your PC (or other device) with the cost of loss of USB 3.0 compatibility. Which, in our case, is what we need, as this switch makes the HDD less power-hungry.
Post a comment if it works for other hard drives too (I think WD also use Micro-B connectors for their USB 3.0 Passports)

I'm wondering, if I'd want to solder something to the USB port (internally of course) and the attached device is not connected, would I still be able to use the port as before(charging, etc.)? Provided I would not use > (IIRC) 5V together, could they be use simultaneously?
Why I'm asking:
I found an old OCZ Trifecta (SD to USB-Adapter with MicroSD slot) laying around. Stripping the thing down reveals a really thin logicboard, which fits almost perfectly under the normal back cover.
So I thought, if I could wire the USB connector of this adapter to the internal one, I could have additional storage. I don't know if this specific adapter is SDHC compatible, but since there are newer ones around, I could get one of those.
Thus I'm asking for advice:
a) technically possible?
b) if yes, how hard is it for a semi-newb?
c) potential trouble I should be aware of? Not meaning loss of guarantee, more about possible hardware destruction.

In theory if you rigged it up to work like usb otg and charging then you might be able to get it to work. I think it takes a resistor to trigger it.

No you wouldn't need a resistor, you just need to short pin 4 and 5 together on the micro usb side. That's what makes it an OTG cable. Check out the picture I attached. That should be the wiring you need to make it work. Refer to the link below.

In theory it should work. The hardest part is attaching wires to the pins of the micro usb connector. It so [email protected]#$ing tiny... not the easiest thing to do. Unless the pins of the connector goes though the other side of the board, then you can solder onto the solder points itself. That should be a lot easier. Any potential problems? You could screw up your micro usb connector... then you might not even be able to charge it if you lose that...

BTW Micro SDXC 64GB in FAT32 works in my Acro S running CM10 with Nova Kernel. You can gain a lot of storage!

According to this video it doesn't seem to be too easy, guess I'll need to wait a few days for a buddy, I'm not yet skilled enough for such delicate work.
If somebody has more skill and faith in his/her talents, you should be able to get an adapter for <5€ practically everywhere.

HDD DONT MOUNT
I connected my 350GB EXTERNAL HD formatted in FAT32, but it does not recognize in multimedia.
My Settings:
RK3066
MCU: KLD.2.78V
FIRMWARE: MALASKY LAST UPDATE
ROOT: YES
If I connect the 4GB pendrive it works normal, when connecting external HD, it only lights up but does nothing on the android.
I installed MountStikc (app) and it did not work, could someone tell me what the problem is?

Which usb port are you using, and is it 3.5" or 2.5"?

Most likely the USB port on the head unit doesn't supply enough power to the hard drive...even if the light comes on it may not be able to spin up.

Exactly my thought. My 500GB 2.5" can only go in the front port, the rear one does not give it enough juice. Although, I am getting delivered a 12v to 5v/usb step down transfomer, coupled with a USB power booster 'Y' cable. I am hoping it will allow me to stick the HDD in the back. I hate it sticking out the front.

onoz ! i have twrp and boootloader, but no system files... HELP !

due to my own stupidity, i had unlocked and installed twrp with a lot of effort, as the usb is decidedly iffy
i managed to use a file manager to import the requisite lineage rom and gapps, and then in my infinite wisdom stored them somewhere volatile - one mistake i won't make again
and so when i cleaned the device prior to a "new" install, i inadvertently lost the zip files, and now the computer refuses to recognise the device
no amount of forcing the right usb driver onit works, because i presume the computer does not know it's a flo
so, is there any way i can get it connected and push the roms to storage ?
my skills at the command line are limited, but i can follow scripts
this is sad, as i was soooooooo close to completing the install, after which the usb would have become redundant (i have a wireless charger and can wifi file across with a working system)
is this thus my very first brick ?
or can i trick the usb connection into working with the computer, or somehow wirelessly transfer to such a basic installation, or rig an otg connection (i have no cables that would seem to join micro-usb to any female plug to use a memory stick or sd card in adaptor)

Get an image file from Google https://developers.google.com/android/images
Try going into TWRP and go into sideloading (can't remember exact menu - only used it once to get out of a similar problem), then try to connect USB lead to PC.
Run flash-all.bat on PC and that should at least get a system on the device.

thanks for the suggestion, but the sideload could place the lineage.zip instead if the computer would accept a usb connection - that's the problem: sideload can't work because the usb device is not recognised
my best bet would appear to be load the zip via otg - the twrp interface appears to allow that
i'll report back here if that works (once i procure a usb otg connector)

I was in a similar position once and couldn't get a normal USB ADB connection with PC until I tried TWRP sideloading which kicked in the PC connection.
Did you try it?
OTG was the next thing I was going to suggest

As the USB port is broken there is no hope that an OTG adapter would work because it can not function without the data connections, exactly like PC-USB. Have a look at the port's soldering, it may need some re-work. If the port's connectors are damaged then a replacement is very cheap.

thanks for the suggestion
i sprung the back and was going to attempt to reflow the solder in case it had a dodgy connection - but i noted that the actual usb connector looked like it had been stretched, and took to it with my favourite pliers and performed some creative metalwork by squeezing it
lo and behold! the otg connection worked, at least for long enough to transfer the custom rom
thereafter when i reassembled the case, the otg connection failed but now the usb link seems to be happy enough even though that makes no great sense seeing it is the same connector port, and the otg works on my other android devices
still, gotta take what you can get, and i am now the proud owner of a nexus 7 "flo" with lineage doing nicely

Ahh this explains why my N7 - used daily - has never developed any USB port problems! I thought that this USB port's construction was rather 'weak' so preemptively I applied a simple reinforcement, have a look at the attachments.
It was 4 years ago....
