Encrption and security on a custom rom/ recovery - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am currently running stock ls990 rom and recovery with encryption on the sd and main disk. I am curious about running a custom rom on my g3 like MOAR on the s5. My main questions are will I be able to encrypt my phone and sd on the custom rom? Will twrp work properly with all the crypto present. And last but not least are there any security focused roms for the lg g3?
(I care deeply for my privacy and liberty) Let me know guys

[Q] Hardbricked my Samsung Galaxy S3 installed a CameraFix for lollipop

So I managed to hardbrick my phone in an attempt to flash a camera fix for lollipop on S3. I used the ROM from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3-sprint/development/rom-unofficial-cm12-lollipop-t2953040
It installed perfectly, and everything worked fine except for the camera. So I used my phone a bit and then later decided to put in the camera fix, so I found this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8obKmPrAh4
And ended up flashing the zip to on my phone through twrp. Flashing it caused my phone to hardbrick (it was meant for i9300 I think). I am unable to go into recovery or download. I just want to know if those 16GB microsd card with the debrick image fixes will work for me? What image am I suppose to download for those fixes? 4.4.2? 4.4.4?
My model is SGH-1747M

Try a debrick image based on the same bootloader/modem version as was last running properly on your phone. Note that you may have to try several sdcards; just the way it is, a specific card may or may not work. Use either 16 or 32Gb cards if your internal storage is 16Gb, as are the AT&T i747 devices. If your i747M has 32 Gb of internal storage (not sure that any do) only use the 32 Gb cards.

I get that, but that is not exactly what I'm asking. From the first link I posted, I said that is the ROM I had last installed. Based on that, what debrick image am I suppose to get? Because the ROM I have installed is "cm-12-20150219-UNOFFICIAL-d2spr.zip". How do I get a debrick image based off of that? Or am I looking at this wrong? Is the bootloader/modem version different from the ROM? If so, how do I get the bootloader/modem version? The version of Android I had before installing the ROM was 4.4.2, would my bootloader/modem be that?

Your bootloader/modem might possibly be 4.4.2.
I haven't seen any custom ROMs on XDA which change your bootloader and modem. The ROMs leave your device running what was present prior to you flashing the ROM. Admittedly I have only checked for the devices I have, a Samsung GalaxyS and an SGS3, both on AT&T. I doubt that the Sprint SGS3 forums are any different regarding the custom ROMs and installation of bootloaders.
The only ROMs I have seen here which do install bootloaders and modems are some of the stock ROMs derived from system dumps of OTA updates.
You don't necessarily need the latest bootloaders and modems to run current custom ROMs. There are many KitKat ROMs that run perfectly well on JellyBean bootloaders as long as you have custom kernels. All of the Lollipop ROMs in this forum are running on KitKat or JellyBean bootloaders. This is because AT&T has not released a LP bootloader. In the forums for the Captivate, my 1st gen SGS, there are Lollipop ROMs running on Gingerbread bootloaders, because GB was the last bootloader released for that device.
I threw all of that out there because it is possible you are still running Jellybean bootloaders if you have been on custom ROMs since receiving your device and have not intentionally flashed an up to date bootloader and modem combo. So, if you know what bootloader you are on flash a debrick image based on that bootloader.
If you do not know what bootloader is on your device, then flash a debrick image based on a 4.4.4 ROM from your device forum (Sprint). If the image you pick is newer than your installed bootloader version, the image should not work. In that case try a 4.4.2 image, and then if necessary a 4.3 image. The troublesome part about this method is that the image may not be working becuase it is based on the wrong firmware or simply because your device doesn't like the image flashed on the micro sdcard you happen to be using, at least that is what I read in the i747 forums. That boils down to suggesting that you try the 4.4.4 image on several cards before changing to the 4.4.2 image.

Thanks for the information, I will probably do what you said and start with the 4.4.4 image and work downwards. Although I believe that my version of S3 didn't ever get 4.4.4 as a firmware, so I probably don't have a 4.4.4 bootloader, so it would be bbest to start from 4.4.2. Either way, I'm not sure if I can get multiple SD cards to try this on. I know my phone is 16GB, and thus I have gotten 16 GB 10 class card. I'm hoping it does the trick, since that is the one people are recommending the most.

I understand about nt having 4.4.4. The AT&T SGS3 received two 4.4.2 bootloaders, NE4 and NJ1, but nothing since. The Canadian SGS3/i747M received several of the NXx series bootloaders, I think they are all 4.4.2. I did see where that device received another bootloader/modem upgrade in the past few months. It was an upgade to OBx. I don't know if that was 4.4.4 or 5.0.x.

Need help on upgrading my rooted LG G3 on stock KitKat (T-Mobile)

If this is posted in the wrong area, I apologize.
I have a rooted LG G3 with TWRP running KitKat. No custom ROM (I rooted it primarily so that I could write to the SD card).
Lately my phone has running strangely lately. It becomes unresponsive for >10 seconds from time to time. Sometimes I press the power button and it won't wake up. So I want to reset my phone and upgrade to Lollipop and load a custom ROM (maybe Cyanogenmod or Cloudy custom ROM). I'm going to use TWRP and Titanium to back everything up on the phone first.
I haven't loaded custom ROMs since my HTC EVO 3D, so it's been a while. I had some (very) basic questions:
If I do a factory reset, will I lose root? I really want to get rid of the stupid non-responsive problem, but I don't want to lose root.
If I load a custom ROM, do I need a specific version of Android to do it? I don't want to load and incompatible ROM and brick my phone.
I've seen posts of people trying to go back to KitKat. Are there any issues with Lollipop that would make my phone issues worse?
Since I can't take OTA updates, how would I upgrade my Android if I have to? Will I lose root if I upgrade?
Thanks for any help you can give me!

Thanks for replying. I have a LG D851 (T-Mobile).
So far I've done a nandroid backup and used titanium backup for apps and data.
I downloaded CloudyG3 2.5. Does this contain the Android update, or do I have to update Android before loading Cloudy?

SIM Card Not Detected After installing New Rom!

I have a d851. I had a fully functional Marshmallow AOSP ROM backed up. Installed N&N Rom 8.0 Beta (Stock) which had 30e. Had no signal. Went back to my AOSP rom. Now SIM card is not detected. Never had this problem before. It only happened after installing this rom. Any help?
N&N (from htcm... forum) do not have beta versions. The rom is "UPDATE N&N 8.0 G5 ULTIMATE ROM", an update for N&N G5 ULTIMATE ROM.
This rom is only for D855: [D855]UPDATE N&N 8.0 G5 ULTIMATE ROM (30E ~ 6.0 Marshmallow)
if you've installed on a D851 it is normal to have failures
They have a d851 port. I been running their rom before but this is the first time having this problem. Also it is a full rom with an "update only" option.
Right, i know. I just wanted to distinguish the port and the original rom, which is only for d855.
Greetings
I have tried flashing the 30d modem but still no luck. In every rom i try to restore there is no baseband and i checked the IMEI and its blank. I have an EFS restored back when I was on lollipop roms. I have also downloaded stock marshmallow rom. My question is, once I flash this, I wlll lose root but will still have TWRP, how do i re obtain root? Also, I was on Lollipop when I originally rooted my phone, which took forever, does that affect how I can fix this problem?

Installing a LG G3 ROM today

Hello guys,
I have a LG G3 d855 EUR (i live in Italy) stock firmware V30c-EUR-XX, no root, no custom rom.
Since i'm pretty new to Android modding, i want to ask for your help because i would install the best custom rom available for my device.
So, which is the best rom? Can i have a step by step tutorial for rooting my device and installing the rom?
I would like to maintain the stock camera quality, i've heard that custom roms may decrease the overall photos quality.
Thanks in advance, i really appreciate your help. :good:

Hello, since this is General.. Question shouldn't post here but anyway, have you heard Fulmics? It is developed by xpirt and will transform your G3 to G5..
You can use that ROM because it is the most reliable ROM i'll ever use on my G3.. Don't worry about the camera quality since it is stock based ROM, you won't lose anything..
Please note that my G3 is korean variant ( F400L ) and not international ( D855 ).. So my choices is a bit limited here.. Don't worry tho because Fulmics support most variant of G3's..
Let's Start!
How to root? First you need to go back to Lollipop, How? If Sony, there is Flashtool but with LG, we can use LGUP and flash the stock kdz/tot there.. Please download the right kdz for your device btw..
And there is many ways to root such as Kingroot or OneClick..
Note that, if you're using Kingroot.. Don't mind about their bloatware because we're going to update to Marshmallow anyway..
After it is done, you need to install TWRP.. You're so lucky because there are many way to install TWRP and the most easiest way is using AutoRec
( BEWARE, IF YOU INSTALLED THE WRONG VARIANT FOR YOUR DEVICES..THIS MAY LEAD TO HARD BRICK! )
AutoRec can be downloaded from Playstore, you need to find the right one for example.. You got D855, so you need to download Autorec Lollipop for D855.. Don't install the one for F400 or else, goodbye to your G3 forever.. Yup, easiest way can be the most risky way to go..
While busy with rooting and installing recovery, download the ROM you want.. As example, download the latest Fulmics 6.9 ROM for G3 and transfer it to root directory of your SD Card..
After you have TWRP installed, boot to TWRP.. If you found it is hard to boot to recovery with those stupid combination key.. Just download an apps called ... Boot.... hmm.. whatever it is.. I'll forgot, just find an apps that can help you boot to recovery easily i guess..
If you succeed to boot to recovery, congratulation.. Now do wipe data cache and install the ROM ( Fulmics 6.9 as example ).. After that, reboot the device and enjoy!
Since my G3's is already dead a long time ago ( bluescreen and flicker ), that's all i can help by typing all of this using my G4.. Goodluck!

Are you sure there is no QFUSE which is blown when you downgrade? Because i've read and heard about it. It's dangerous to downgrade, someone got stuck on 5% and had the secure boot error which is an indication of QFUSE.

The downgrade is mandatory for rooting the device, right? Is there a root for Android 6.0 too? :/

QFUSE was supposed to be a downgrade protection which triggers when someone flashes in download mode a version of android lower than the current one. I have no idea why, if you access the hidden menu, and find DRM, you find QFUSE there. It was supposed to, like said before, be a fuse which is triggered by a downgrade.

Clarification needed regarding rooting and bootloader for installing LineageOS 17.1

Hi all,
so my current smartphone died for good and instead of getting a new one, I thought I'd revive my old Sony Xperia Z1 Compact. It's been a while since I switched it on so the battery is dead but I'm planning to buy a new battery and replace it. Then I plan to install LineageOS (which is based on Android 10 I believe?)
However I've never done rooting or anything more than basic end user stuff so I've searched the internet and thought I needed to root my phone and then flash the LineageOS. I've read some beginner guides on this forum and other places. However, I've ran into some conflicting/confusing(?) info and need some clarification before starting out. Hope someone can help with my admittedly-very-noobie questions:
1) Can I install LineageOS WITHOUT rooting my phone?
I believe that the bootloader needs to be unlocked first but is rooting necessary? The reason being is that I just want to get rid of the current stock ROM (I think it was Lollipop - can't know for sure because the new battery hasn't arrived yet) and install LineageOS. I don't want a rooted phone because it might conflict with banking apps and such (I know there are workarounds i.e. masking/reflashing/unrooting but as I am not that familiar with the development systems I will just be exposing myself to unknown vulnerabilities) so is it possible to just have the custom ROM and not completely root the phone?
2) Unlocking the bootloader
So I read I have to do a backup first before unlocking the bootloader. Is an SD card necessary or only for rooting? Since unlocking the bootloader will format the SD card anyway? Where should the backup be stored then?
I'd really appreciate some guidance. Thanks!!
Cheers,
traegr
LineageOS or most other roms aren't rooted by default. You will have to install solutions like magisk.
If you install twrp https://forum.xda-developers.com/sony-xperia-z1-compact/development/recovery-twrp-3-3-1-t3960699 make sure you are on latest stock firmware as you need the latest bootloader which allows booting into recovery. Flash firmware with Xperia Flashtool which has inbuilt firmware downloader. http://www.flashtool.net/index.php
If you can't boot into TWRP, you can try flashing attached file with xperia flashtool.
Instead of unofficial lineage I recommend AICP forum.xda-developers.com/sony-xperia-z1-compact/orig-development/rom-aicp-15-0-q10-0-amami-t4005457 . It's got good battery life and nice inbuilt tweaks and customization options..
Hope this helps
Also you need to flash Gapps if you want to use certain apps. Important point for AICP is that you can use microg instead. https://microg.org/

AICP provides more customizations while lineage is a "cleaner" approach. In the end AICP builds on top of lineage sources and adds several features. It totally depends on your personal taste. I consider it to be a bit overloaded. But that's my opinion. Which may be a bit influenced as I build the lineage version. Hehe
But once you have a recovery set up you can easily flash one, test it, and try the other one afterwards.
Hardware functionality should be same as AICP (SpiritCroc) and lineage (mse and me) share the same device tree sources. If one of us repairs something the other one will also get the fixes.
Both AICP and lineage have OTA update support. If you need microg you can either go with AICP 15 (Android 10) or Lineage 16 (Android 9).
Also you can easily backup your entire system with twrp if something goes wrong when flashing or whatever.
And when "hopping" roms you can make backups with Titatnium (root needed)
