Hi,
i have a fire stick (unrooted) and currently use firestarter.
Is there a way to stop the default KFTV launcher loading at startup without root? I still would like to load it up now and again, but only when needed using firestarter.
I hear the default launcher uses up a lot of ram
Any help appreciated

ill try it thanks
do you mean KFTVlauncher (clear data / cache) ?
guessing it would need to be done on every startup
Nope, there currently isnt a way without root.
The FTVLauncher is the base for a lot of the other Amazon stuff on the stick which wouldn't work without it.
This is why its very aggressive in how it works.
If I remember clearing data from it will remove a lot of stuff/settings/data from the stick (might be thinking of the Kindle launcher though?)
Freezing the FTVLauncher is the probably the main reason for gaining root, it takes up a far amount of RAM when running!
Your better off rooting, installing Titanium Backup, freezing it, setting FireStarter as 'Home' and unfreezing it when you need it.

So im new to all this. My last "smart" phone was pretty basic and couldnt do much. I went through the root process thinking I would like it, but so far it seems like I wasted my time. I thought I would be able to uninstall useless apps and install apps right to the SD card. So far neither have worked. I was wondering if anyone could help and explain in plain simple english what I may be doing wrong or is this phone basically useless to root and just have to live with it as is? I tried titanium backup - all that did was take up almost all my remaining phone space, change my keyboard and switch my wallpaper back to default. I tried System app remover to remove unwanted bloatware - no change. I tried ROM toolbox lite to install apps to SD, I checked that box in the app for it to do this- downloaded an app to see if it worked and nope. So any suggestions on anything useful root does for this phone? So far it seems like i wasted my time on this.

Heya Andy, welcome. you have a great phone there, and It just needs a little patience.
-you can remove any unwanted system app using whatever Root Explorer/manager you Wish, including ES file explorer!
-you can install/move apps to SD. the best way to do that would be Link2SD. you'll need to look around and read to get acquainted with it, but it's a great little app and it will let you install hundreds of apps, all on SD.
-to make the best use of your Root, you should install this or something similar.
-One of the best things you can do with root, is to install Xposed framework and use modules to customize your phone. some of my favorites are: Sense6 Toolbox, App Ops, Network speed indicator, Xsense, Bootmanager,,,. they give you great control on many aspects of the phone and add some very useful functionality.
I am having a problem getting the default app settings to stick. I have Chrome browser set as my default browser. Everytime I click on a link in a email or in a web page I have to select which browser I want to use. I click on Chrome and select always, then I get the popup notification that I need to go to the default settings and clear. I have done this so many times I can't count them any more. I have tried using the Default App Manager from Google play store but still have to select which browser I want to use each time. I am runing IronRom 2.3.5.
I have exactly the same problem with all apps. Driving me crazy
Maybe we will get lucky and someone will eventually reply with a fix or at least an explanation as to what is causing this.

Is there a chance you are rooted and removed or froze (Titanium Backup) apps to reduce bloat ware? I ask as I lost proper app association functionality after doing what I described. I refreshed my firmware and regained normal association functionality. Unfortunitely I never identified which specific app I needed to leave alone and never had the patience to do a trial and error test so cannot help further.

I did a master reset, and re-installed as new user. Problem fixed!!!!!

Press power, volume up, home button together, when it starts unpress power, then delete all cache and data, then reboot. On start you have options to re- install, check new user

The first time I used ODIN to re-flash the stock firmware (5.0.2). That wiped all my user data, but the second time I copied the firmware tar file to the Tab S then used Flashfire to only flash the boot, system and recovery images thus preserving user data. Flashfire will automatically reinstall SuperSU to retaining root. I added the clearing of cache to the Flashfire flash process queue just to be thorough.
If you de-bloated by freezing apps with Titanium Backup then first unfreeze everything, reboot and check if app associations work again. Could save you a lot of time because re-flashing would not be required.
If you de-bloated by removing system apps they will need to be removed again but if you used Titanium Backup to freeze apps they will still be frozen and you will likely still have the issue with app association. I used to remove system apps but I switched to TiBu freeze specifically because when I upgrade firmware (e.g. BOE2 to BOE3) my de-bloat selections are retained. Just more convenient. There maybe slicker ways to get app associations working again but I never found an alternative.
Hope that helps.
Hello xda member's,
Like most of you I've been running firestarter as a home launcher replacement, but lately been frustrated by the Constance reloading of the stock launcher provider by amazon.
I've edited the stock launcher that still lets setting work ( without it I had trouble with settings not working correctly), by using this launcher it allows you to full get the use out of your firestarter launcher without the need for adb settings being turned on.
simply hitting the home button will take you to firestarter and you can still open firetv launcher if needed by showing system apps.
#My system setup
I have firestarter.apk in /system/priv-app
replaced the stock launcher with the provided one attached ( remember to repair permissions)
Root is required as well.
If anyone is willing to try, I could see if I can make it update without root to gain the same effect, so if your interested without root please let me know if you want to test it.
This is not a flashable zip.... this is done via adb shell with root access, and as I said before if your willing to test for none root please let me know.
resevered
seems sideloading fails trying to update, but worth a shot.
strictly root app.
I'm rooted with 5.0.5
Do i install firestarter v3.2.2.apk then move it to /system/priv-app or just move the apk itself?
Edit: I installed then moved to priv-app. However when in firestarter and i click on AFTV settings nothing happens. It won't open the amazon settings. I had to revert back to the stock launcher.

Hello, all.
I froze some system apps on my Pixel 2 XL using Titanium Backup. But it turns out I need to unfreeze a few of them now, but I can't. Titanium Backup, as well as several other root freeze / defrost apps, report a successful defrost each time. But in reality the apps are still frozen. And this is confirmed when I re-enter the freeze / defrost app, it lists them all as still frozen. I can try and try again to defrost, but it's always unsuccessful. It should be noted I don't have a Titanium Backup of the apps, nor do I have a TWRP backup of the phone pre-freeze. So I can't simply uninstall, then restore, the apps. I need a solution to defrost them, because that's the only option I seem to have.
I read a few forum threads about this problem happening to other people, and a proposed solution involving manually editing packages.xml. However these threads are years old, and seemingly outdated because the packages.xml on my phone doesn't contain the strings people are referring to.
So... I'm stuck. I contacted a few of the freeze / defrost app developers for tips, but none of them responded. So I'm hoping some of y'all here have some solution for me to try.
Thanks in advance,

I haven't encountered your problem with TiBu on my stock + rooted P2XL, however, have you tried clearing TiBu app cache and data, then rebooting?

Yes, I have. Makes no difference.

Then about the only other thing I could suggest is to clear app cache/data again, go to magisk manager and uncheck root authorization, uninstall TiBu, reboot, then install TiBu again.
Hi all,
Got my 20X running EMUI 9.1 (all stock) and started disabling some useless apps (to me) like Google Music & Google Photos..
But these constantly re-enabled themselves appearing back on home screen.. So I decided to go ADB
Removed mostly Google apps I wasn't using but then I deleted some Huawei ones like HiCare..
...because I was doing such a good job :silly: I decided to get rid of the stock Gallery app - that is com.android.gallery3d and another one like com.android.gallery3d.overlay IIRC
Set my own gallery app as Default however the Huawei Camera app will not let me access recent shots as it's asking for the stock Gallery app...
Any way I can get around this please?
My goto is try apkmirror
https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/huawe...ease/gallery-9-0-15-355-android-apk-download/
May or may not like it.
You can also check default apps under apps in setting to reset as default if necessary

Factory Reset will get you all back to before you started disabling/deleting apps.

Was afraid I'd have to do that... just after I finished setting everything up :l
any shortcuts I could take?

Factory Reset is your fastest way of getting it working again as far as I know. Once you start deleting factory files/apps, I'm not sure what interacts with other files/apps to know exactly what needs to be reinstalled/added manually. With Factory Reset there's no question since it puts everything back how it was from factory. I was lucky enough to unlock my bootloader prior to Huawei blocking that and as a rule I freeze apps via Titanium Backup and wait at least a few weeks to see if anything else is effected before deleting.

You can try an older version and then see if it can be upgraded. The AppMarket if on AL00 is an alternative.
Huawei Backup & Restore is actually pretty good at settings and data, if you can save off the device itself before a reset.
So I managed to sort this out without having to Factory Reset, I just re-installed the app via adb
cmd package install-existing <name of package>
[Also returned the phone in the meantime]
