Strange CPU behavior on LG G4 - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an issue with an LG G4 phone.
The phone was taken taken to a shop to repair a broken screen and after it came back, it started to run really slowly. I tried a factory reset which didn't help.
I installed Cpu-Z and what I found is that out of the 6 cores, only one of them is ever active. All the others are stopped and they never turn on.
I have unlocked the bootloader, installed TWRP, wiped data, cache and system and re-flashed the stock rom and still have the same issue.
Is it possible that this is a hardware issue?
Some of the phone details:
Model: LG-H815
Android Version: 5.1
Kernel Version: 3.10.49
Build Number: LMY47D
Software Version: V10d-EUR-XX
Thanks

Weird, the stock kernel is not turning cores off they are always on. So I guess your cpu has so problems

Any bootloop issues so far?
Are you sure they didn't do anything other then replacing the screen?

No bootloop issues, everything seems to working fine, just slowly. Lots of lag and it freezes often. I'm not sure if they did anything else, nothing that I know of though. It's not my phone so I can't be certain.
It seems strange that this could be a hardware issue where one core works fine and the others never activate...

I had some odd core behavior and lag myself before indefinite bootloop.
Well, it is certainly not good. I would recommend to go back and reflash stock kernel and rom just to be sure. If everything stays the same....lg repair service would do it.

Use kernel aduiter or however you spell it and go to the cpu section. Look at how many of the boxes are checked in both the big cpu and small cpu. All 6 should be checked.

I installed it and tried to look at the cpu screen, but I just won't open. I let it run for 30 minutes and it just won't load the screen. Everything else in the app works fine. I guess that kind of helps to see that there is some sort of hardware issue with the CPU...

Hmm try 3c cpu manager for lg g4 its the best tool for android devices if you have pro version, but free version let you turn on and turn off cores. If this app can't enable cores that means something is wrong with your g4
Its really weird that by default you have disabled cores...

I tried 3c cpu manager and finally got some progress!
I am able to turn on cpu cores 1-3 so then I have 4 cores enabled. Cores 4 and 5 still do not turn on, but the phone runs much better with 4 cores than with 1.
The only thing is that every time I restart the phone, it goes back to having only core 0 enabled, so I created a startup profile in 3c that enables the other cores after the boot.
What I think is happening is that there is probably some issue with the big cpu cluster and then, when the kernel is starting, it detects this issue, and enters some sort of fail-safe mode with only a single core. This causes the startup time to be really long, but once the phone has started and the profile has activated, it works pretty well

[Q] Sometimes Screen Doesn't Come Up

Hi,
Sometimes when i click Home button Middle-Bottom of the screen.
physical buttons's Backlight turning on but screen doesn't come up.
I have to try at least 5-6 more times for screen to show up.
What is wrong with my phone ?
It's just sometimes really annoying..
Thank you for reading.

Seems like extreme lag to me. The next time it happens check with a program (like OS monitor) the cpu usage. The situation that you described happened to me once, the MtpApp process was using 100% cpu and i couldn't use my phone properly until i rebooted it.
I faced a similar issue on a Xperia Ray
Its hardware i guess, flashing stock didnt work for me
What i say is you should flash stock FW
Thank you for all those answers !
I'm using DoomKernel 2.32.9 ( I Guess it's 19v )
2.3.7 Modded GB Deluxe Edition ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1533332 )
It was happening more before i started using Modded GB Deluxe Edition.
But it is still happening, and still a lot annoying..
Thank you for reading.

If your using a program like SetCPU or no-frills cpu control make sure that the minimum clock frequency is not set to 122MHz. Try set it to atleast 245MHz. I tried setting the "screen off" CPU to the minimum on SetCPU before in the hope to get more battery life, but whenever I wanted to wake the phone there would be a 2-3 second lag before the screen showed up. I hope this helps.
I guess this will work.
remove your SD card, connect it to a PC & format it, Insert it back.
@adielee
I wasn't using anything like SetCPU back than. So it can't be the problem.
Thank you for your answer.
@Kajendran
Okay, will try it. Sounds like a good idea.
But why is this hapening ?

Maybe you can try flashing the stock kernel to test? i tried flashing a non-stock kernel a few times before and results were mixed and never perfect for me (don't really know why). Sometimes it would randomly glitch and the screen would turn black for about 1/2 a second or something. Wifi would sometimes be intermittent despite flashing the modules for some as well.
I'm not experienced enough to fully understand but I'm thinking that it could be a regional thing? I mean, how signals differ between regions?
So.......
Did it work........

Random reboot issue

Got this phone a week ago. Been experiencing random reboots. I tried another battery, but still see the reboots. Anyway to isolate it to determine whether its a hardware or software issue? Thanks

It is most likely a bad kernel. Only time I experienced this. What Rom and kernel do you use?

Are you over clocked/under volted? Are you on a stock rom? That could be a sign of a slightly to high of an overclock/low under volt.

He also has the same idea as me. Mostly due to a bad overclock kernel. Or wrong build kernel used.

Try using Odin to go back to stock. I recommend GB27. See if the issue still occurs, and be mindful of what apps you install. The issue may be an app that you install instead of the OS itself.

I know this is not going to make you feel any better, but I get the random reboots as well with my phone when I use AOSP roms. some people dont have any issues when they flash custom ROMs, some do. It is just the way the E4GT is.
For example, with most ROMS, my GPS works flawlessly even on ROMs that others have issues with. That is the price you pay when you mod your phone. What separates the old-timers from the newbies is that the more experienced know how to deal with those issues, and if they cant deal with them they move to another ROM.
IMO, the reason some phones have no issues and some do is the way we have to unlock the phone and flash ROMs. I see that in most phones, everything is about a one step process, our's is not and anytime you have extra steps involved, there is a chance something doesnt flash right - This is just my idea from my personal experience, I have no technical data to support this
What I have done to decrease the reboots is download Gravity Screen and Screen Off. I noticed that when I used the power button to turn the scree off, the power menu would come up. At this point, if I touched any thing or set it down, it would reboot 50% of the time. Now I dont have to touch any of the buttons to wake or make my screen go off. I had 1 reboot yesterday, a few on Saturday, and none today. See if that helps you any.

Tab S 10.1 Touch Screen Stops Working

Ok so I am having a strange touch screen issues with both mine and my wife's tab S 10.1. It started on mine several weeks ago. When using the device, the touch screen will all of a sudden stop responding. If I press the home button, the device goes to the home screen, it just does not respond to any touch. If I press the power button to put the device to sleep and push it again to turn it back on the screen is working again but it will freeze up again, sometimes in less than a minute. When it first happened I tried to do a factory reset to see if that would help and the problem actually occurred during the initial device setup then so I know it's not related to an App that I have installed. I have sent mine to Samsung now three times trying to get them to fix it. They have replaced the screen once and said that there is nothing wrong the second time (still waiting on the determination of the third time). I have tried to research the issue but have not seen anyone experiencing the same thing. I do not have the rebooting issues that others have mentioned and turning the screen off and then back on does make it work, at least temporarily. I only remember noticing it since upgrading to Android 5 so I am going to try getting the device downgraded to Android 4.4.4 to see if that helps. Wanted to see if anyone had any other ideas. Samsung has basically told me if their techs say there isn't a problem they won't do anything for me.
A few people have mentioned touchscreen problems after upgrading to v5.0.2 mostly 8.4" but some 10.5" have you had any horizontal/vertical lines on the screen.

I have never noticed any lines. I have noticed after the first time at the repair center that the touch screen also seemed to be acting erratically, jumping around when trying to scroll or pan instead of having smooth motion. If I am able to get the device downgraded to KitKat and that improves things, I will just stay there until they figure out what is wrong with Lollipop.
I have stayed on kitkat because of the problems with lollipop, it`s just not worth it to me, but the majority of people don't seem to have any problems with it, I cannot see how upgrading to lollipop affects some touchscreens and not them all, but some people have reported the problem after upgrading i just don't know what to say.
It is normal for the touchscreen to behave erratic if you use it while your tablets is being charged, it is mentioned in the user manual.
I would say you have a faulty touchscreen, do you use a screen protector, have you tried the setting that increases the sensitivity of the touchscreen.
John.
I did not know about the charging item so that might explain the erratic behavior. I thought it might explain the screen locking up too but I know that has happened at times when I am not charging the device. I will be interested to see what happens this time when it comes back the third time from Samsung and whether downgrading my wife's device helps the issue on hers or whether we will need to fight with Samsung about hers as well.
For a couple months, I've had exactly the same problem on my Galaxy Tab S 10.5 (SM-T807V). It comes and goes in severity; some days, I lose all touch input every 5 minutes, it seems, while other days, I can go hours without trouble. Using the device without a case seems to help, as does restarting it, at least temporarily.
I have not sent my device to Samsung, nor have I performed a factory reset. But based on your experience, I'm not sure if either option is worth it.
Hi.
I would suggest removing any screen protector and cleaning the screen looking for any damage, download a touchscreen tester app from google play and testing your screen.
After searching around i found an touchscreen recalibration app for android, but i am very wary of it being fake or causing more damage or that it is for a specific brand of phone/tablet.
EDIT: I used an hex editor, and found this text within the apk file, see photo below.
John.
Well Samsung is finally sending the device back to me. This time they said the found the problem and replaced the main board and updated the software. So we will see what happens when it gets back to me tomorrow.
For anyone who is having this problem like I did. My wife has not had problems since she stopped using the device while it was charging. I have not had problems with mine since it got back related to this but whether that was Samsung fixing the issue or the fact that I also am not using it on my charger, I do not know. So if anyone else if having the problem, try the charger thing; otherwise, you may be looking at some kind of hardware issue that Samsung will have to resolve for you.
Most devices behave erratically while being charged. My HTC does it so does my tab.
Samsung even mention it.
Hi, i am having EXACTLY the same issue. The tab toucj freezes and normalizes if i lock it and unlock it with home button. I think its a software issue.

Hi.
I was reading the HTC forum as i have qone of their phones, and i read that some people were using an Samsung touchscreen app to boost the touchscreen as they were having problems, the app is called "SGS Touchscreen Booster" link below, The Tab S1 has it`s own touch screen booster in the settings, maybe try that first.

That's how android works. Its pointless trying to reduce ram usage if there is still ram to spare.
Android utilises ram not wastes it.

I had multiple problems with 5.0.2, ram hogging, touchscreen problems, my solution was to root and install a custom rom 4.4.4 the tablet is so much more responsive after reverting back to kitkat. I know it's not a solution for everyone but it fixed mine (SM-T800). Just throwing it out as an option.
Used kies today to upgrade to the latest firmware but still the problem continues. I have the Samsung sm t807v Verizon locked. Is there a way I can downgrade it to kit kat? Xda experts are saying it's bootloader is locked

This is a strange one I used to have the opposite. 4.4.4 every now and then touch screen stopped responding. Pressing power resolved it.
When I upgraded to LL the problem went away.
However I mostly use custom builds. At the moment the best for me is PhoeniX ROM.
Absolutely bug free so far.
Can't say I had any issues with Ironrom either.

I'm running BlissStalk (discontinued) but I haven't had any issues with it. I was running the CM11 unofficial also without issues. But the stock 5.0.2 it had on it when I purchased it (used) had issues. All my devices eventually end up with a custom rom eventually!

I flashed stock kitkat firmware via Odin... But it is a different tablet than yours (SM-T800). I found the following thread when I was trying to do it. Just make sure you flash the firmware for your specific model.

So basically searching around the internet to find a kitkat firmware for this. I think it can be downgraded but I need the stock firmware for the sm-t807v.
XDA forums have support for the other variants but for the one I have which is Verizons sm-t807v there are no STOCK firmwares anywhere.
Ashyx and steve if you know any resource, please help me out. I need to get this fixed. I don't have access to any verizon stores where I could go and get this fixed or sorted. It just me and the internet.

Overheating problem while using google cardboard

Hello
I have a problem with the h815 (black leather)
I bought a vr box, so i can enjoy the google cardboard options
But while using it after 30 minutes the device begins to say : the phone is overheating if this continues the phone will shut down
5 minutes later it shuts off...
And after that i cant boot the device for 5 minutes.
But another thing i notice, in the begin when i start using it every things runs fine and lag free.
After some time lets say 15 a 25 minutes everything begins 2 lag, video's are lagging and watching 380grade picture also.
Some one has idea for preventing it too overheat?
And also who hase the same problem . or has a google cardboard box en not having the problem
I did not yet experience any overheating while playing a game. but I don't game that often
I currently running on my device
Custom rom marshmallow genisys 3.5 exposed edition with the stock rooted kernel 20b
My old G4 (h811) used to have the same issue. I had one of the ones with a bad motherboard so i kinda knew why. Have you tried closing all app besides google cardboard? If so have you tried turning on the core control and temp. Throttle in kernel auduitor (assuming you have root) if none of those help then i dont know. Thats all i got.

Stock update caused freezing and rebooting Samsung Galaxy Note 4 SM-N910P (Sprint)

I need some help guys. I received the OTA update from Sprint with my stock firmware and it totally made my phone unusable. It keeps freezing and then rebooting. I have tried everything i can think of but nothing helps.
I did i full factory reset about 3 times. 2x with the zerolemon battery i was using for the last 2 years. Then another factory reset using the stock battery that came with the phone, which didn't get used more than about 5 recharge cycles before I replaced it with the zerolemon one.
After that I thought i could undo the patch but as you guys know the QI5 firmware is not backward compatible so am i kind of screwed? I have tried rooting and loading a custom rom, the CMDMOTO is the only one I tried since it seemed to work for others using the Qi5, but i still have the same issue.
I am a bit new to the rooting world but i have been reading up to figure out my problem, any suggestions? I have TWRP, super user and titanium backup.
Thanks
Work around FOUND !
Installing the app 'Wake Lock' and using level 4 'PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK' seems to have made everything better. I will keep this thread updated if something else happens. I guess for some reason the last patch changed something that made the cpu go inactive or sleep much more frequently or something like that.
If anyone knows how to correct this let me know. It seems that this was actually a very common problem with the other variants of the note 4 it just took a while to get to this version. I wonder if anyone else was having this issue with the N910P.
Cheers
Have you tried booting to recovery and wiping the cache partition? If it falls asleep and freezes that points to a kernel issue if I'm not mistaken. Wiping cache will NOT delete any of your data. Hold Volume Up, Home, and power til the phone turns on and you see some yellow/blue/red text in the upper left corner then release. Try wiping cache and see if it helps

When I did the factory wipe from the 3rd time onward I always wiped the cache and all other options that were available. As long as i keep the wakelock app active the phone does not freeze up and/or shut down but it is draining my battery pretty fast. I am thinking it has something to do with the phone going to deep sleep and unable to come out of it properly. I am playing around with 'Kernel Auditor ' to see if i can find a setting that will fix this issue. I am almost convinced it has something to do with the cpu clock states and Deep sleep not working correctly anymore.
I personally am a fan of 3c Toolbox for most of my diagnostic needs. Theres a free version available, check under the cpu manager tab for whatever info is relevant to you. Example..it will tell you live cpu frequencies/load, live power usage, wakelocks, all sorts of goodies
Have you tried to ODIN a factory .tar image?
sammobile dot com has the QI5 image. Just make sure tou grab the sprint one and not the unknown carrier version.

Thank you so much for posting this work around! My Wife's Note 4 has been working great for over a year, she bought it used. Then a few weeks ago a bunch of updates were pushed to it and it just started to act up.
I narrowed it down to always occurring after the phone was idle for more then an hour or so and started to look for a clue if this may be a known issue so your work around makes a lot of sense.
It does appear to be an issue with Googles 6.0.1 OS version since my BlackBerry Key 1 also received a bunch of updates but its fine.
