Does anyone know of any Bluetooth 4.0 profile headphones that look like the one in the picture? Amazon has the small buds and huge cover the ear type.
Mine are worn out and with the new N5 coming today i figured it is a good time to upgrade the headphones.
There is no advantage to having Bluetooth 4.0 headphones to those that use an earlier version of Bluetooth, though do get a more recent model of headphones as the A2DP works a lot better on them.

Data throughput and battery life are the major changes which both matter to headphones.
Does anyone know of any Bluetooth 4.0 wireless headphones? In particular, I'm looking for small in-ear Bluetooth 4.0 headphones. I like the smaller size. Recently ordered a 2.0 pair but they ended up only being less than 4 hours. hoping a 4.0 pair will provide better battery life.

The link from amazon was for the small in ear buds I mentioned. They were in stock when I asked the question, but they show out of stock now.

hmmm.... really sorry, but I don't see any links in this thread other than what you just now posted. Not sure whats up with that. Only thing I saw was an attachment you did with a pic of some over-the-ear headphones. Either way though, thanks very much for the link. 7 hours is much better than the ones I bought off ebay lol. Still, would be nice to find some with at least 10 hours, though not sure if that's possible with such small Bluetooth headphones. Those are nice though, adding them to my wishlist to when they do go back in stock. Thanks for the heads up.

So just to be clear i wanted to confirm on the matter of if a Bluetooth 4.0 HANDset needs a bluetooth 4.0 HEADset for the Bluetooth Low Energy profile to work...? I been reading up on it online and iv seen different things in different places... and considering there are not many 4.0 headsets out there yet, would that mean the power consumtion will downgrade to that standard...??
I was really interested in the Sony SBH52 headset but can barely find it in stock anywhere and its bluetooth 3.0...

Right now the A2DP and HFP profiles used by headsets and speakers are defined to only work using the older standards. It is a huge task to change the profiles to use the BLE connection and this is not going to start anytime soon.

The 7dayshop one is AWESOME. I have it, and it has really, really good sound quality when wired or through aptX. The only problem with the Nexus 5, is that it most likely does not use aptX.
Here is a non UK version:

These are the OEM model of the VOXOA 4.0 headphone that goes for ~$150 on Amazon.

Bluetooth 4.0 uses GATT largely as an application layer for the profiles to operate. The BLE is the spec and operates outside of normal Bluetooth frequencies (at a lower one) which in itself helps with power but the tech has a side effect of slightly lowered range. A Bluetooth 4.0 phone with a 4.0 headset even using old profiles will still see power savings and data throughput enhancements just from GATT alone.
I don't think there really is a way for them to write the A2DP and HFP to utilize 4.0 (HFP profile is at 1.5 right now so it hasn't changed much and am typing this out on my phone so can't easily tell you when A2DP stopped changing but its been awhile). The special profiles 4.0 uses are tied together with GATT, so again, the benefits are going to be there.

Hello Watcher07, OK good to see you have a well above average understanding of the technology, in many many ways you should be right in most of your points, though until the profiles change to include a statement that the BLE connection can be used by itself, this is not going to happen. Sadly.

Let me try to explain this a different way. The BLE operates independently of the Profiles. A2DP is at version 1.2 as well as the HFP at 1.5. To put this in perspective, A2DP verson 1 came about in 2003, 1.3 was in 2012. BLE has existed since 2003 when it was Cyrix or something like that then became an adapted, certified bluetooth tech in 2010. But it doesn't matter because of how they operate. The following is taken directly from the bluetooth.org's developers PDF about A2DP:
In Figure 1.1, the structure and the dependencies of the profiles are depicted. A profile is dependent upon another profile if it re-uses parts of that profile, by implicitly or explicitly referencing it. Dependency is illustrated in the figure. A profile has dependencies on the profile(s) in which it is contained – directly and indirectly. As indicated in Figure 1.1, the A2DP is dependent upon the Generic Access Profile (GAP), as well as the Generic Audio/Video Distribution Profile (GAVDP) [3], which defines procedures required to set up an audio/video streaming. The A2DP defines parameters and procedures that are specific for audio streaming. The terminology, user interface and procedures as defined in the GAP and GAVDP are applicable to this profile, unless explicitly stated otherwise.
Bluetooth 4.0 uses GATT as opposed to GAP that earlier versions of bluetooth used. The A2DP profile doesn't do anything but state how to process the codecs, compression and how to present the output to a device. The GAP and GATT are core operations profiles that dictate things like power usage and such. When you pair two bluetooth devices, (since we're talking about v4.0 here I'll use 4.0 terms) GATT keeps the phones connected but without drawing alot of power by utilizing the BLE hardware chip. As soon as A2DP gets triggered from you trying to play a song, GATT sends a wake command to the receiving device which brings it out of its low power mode and triggers the A2DP profile to start decompressing the data stream and processing the codecs to deliver your music.
A2DP hasn't changed much as a profile because it doesn't have to. It has no impact whatsoever on BLE, all of that is handled via GATT. The A2DP profile doesn't even know it's not talking to GAP since GATT fills that void. The same is true of HFP. The compression of the data stream and codec processing is all handled within subsets of the A2DP profile and the codecs are vendor specific. A2DP changes from device to device on a codec level but the Profile spec doesn't change because there's no reason to mess with it as it would cause whatever vendors device that messed with it to no longer be certified from the consortium.
Now let's get back to the core issue, Bluetooth 4.0 headphones. BLE does have power savings and some data throughput enhancements but it has to be tied to another Bluetooth 4.0 device (as the hardware requires a specific chip). The instant one or the other device isn't 4.0, everything goes down to the lowest Bluetooth version and gets rid of the benefits of 4.0. People who only use bluetooth headphones for say, a jog, aren't really going to notice the difference between 4.0 and lesser versions. However if it's someone like a power user who spends all day with a bluetooth headset in their ear and taking calls constantly, they'll definitely notice the power savings.
If you want to read the developer pdf about A2DP to learn more about how it works, go to: http://developer.bluetooth.org/TechnologyOverview/Documents/A2DP_Spec.pdf

This is where your misunderstanding starts, in the first sentence I quote. I agree with you this is kind of how it looks from those stack diagrams.
The GATT command you describe does not exist. It would be simple command to define, but it will take a while to actually happen. The work to define that has not started.

GATT isn't a command, it's a protocol. There's also no minsunderstanding, I spent over a decade working on wireless technologies in the Navy and out of it with civilians and enlisted. I've built all kinds of wireless devices, bluetooth included, from scratch and worked hand in hand with developers on the technology, so the diagrams aren't where my "misunderstanding" started. Regardless, there's a slew of misinformation out there about Bluetooth and there's apparently no headway being made here to help you understand. I appreciate the civility of your conversation despite our differences, so we'll simply bring an end to this particular dialogue as the effort is outweighing the benefits. I'm not sure where you're getting your information from, all of mine is coming from experience and bluetooth.org, I just encourage you to keep an open mind about how this tech works behind the scenes.
Newer versions of Bluetooth offer no benefits for headphones as BLE, Bluetooth Low Energy, is not adequate for streaming high bandwidth stereo music. That's why you don't see a lot of manufacturer's jumping on the 4.0 train.

ekjl, you are right that while streaming there is not a lot of benefit, if the headphones are using 50mA while streaming, if 3mA of the 50mA is due to the bluetooth connection, to save 1mA does not make a large change to the streaming time.
Watcher07 is right that when not streaming BLE could save power and increase the standby time. But some changes would need to be made to A2DP and HFP to allow this to happen in a standardized way.
Hey guys,
Not sure if i'm the first on this forum to receive my joying 8inch head unit but i got it last friday and installed it the same day. This thing is awesome.
I've never had an android head unit but i've been hovering around these forums for about 2 months waiting for a 2gb unit to come out. I got on the new joying unit right when it came out and purchased it on amazon right away. Their customer service was awesome, they made sure i had the tools needed to install it before they shipped it out (which i did). and it still only took 4 days to get to me (central USA).
Coming from a $600 pioneer head unit i could not be happier. This is awesome. If you guys would like some more pics, or information feel free to post here or email me at [email protected]. Also i am the only one to have a review on amazon so far
Won't let me put images cause i'm still new to posting.. so here is the URL broken up

Installed steering wheel controls. It was not to bad, would of only taken a few minutes if i would of known what to do. I own a Subaru WRX 2010. I had to wire Key 2 to Pin #4 and Pin #14 to ground.
You will have a car crash soon...
When you keep driving and taking/posting fotos (of your android radio) and fidling arround.
But thanks for the first impression. Looks like they changed the equalizer software from the fake 9 to a honest 3-Band EQ.
Anything about the Audio Quality?

Will you be rooting the device anytime soon? Any bluetooth issues with regards to connecting multiple devices/call quality? any problems with the mic?

Not sure if i need to root it as everything i want i think i can get without. i'm open to hearing arguements about why i should root it though.
I have not tested out multiple devices on the bluetooth, i can do that later today. I have not tested the Mic as i do not make phone calls often. The microphone it came with seems to be almost identical to the one that came with my pioneer, just like a $6 mic you can get on amazon.

please can you post a pitcure about your system information with the MCU version and show me the url about your purchase?
Interested in the mic quality also. Will be installing mine in a F150 with the factory sync system and hoping the mic quality is on par.
Question about the subwoofer settings on these units, are there any you can adjust like low-pass filter and/or cutoff frequencies and stuff?

I just installed an 8" in my Prius Plug-in, I couldn't get the steering wheel control and backup camera to work after 2 days of messing with it. So I took it to Best Buy to get that working. Tech support at Joying sucks and it takes 24 hours to get a reply from them.
Bluetooth connects to the phone, but music doesn't play, fm reception sucks, and it won't read my 128gig sdcard. I haven't had a chance to really get into it yet, but I will when I get it back from Best Buy and I'll repost then with a full report.

The FM reception is fine in my car, that is weird that it is not going well for you, maybe you could give the antenna more power. To get the 128gb sd card to work i had to put it in my phone first, my phone formatted it correctly for android, then i threw it into my radio. If you'd like some help with other things i am more than happy if you email me.
Also their customer support has been good to me so far, yes it takes a while for them to reply because their business hours are when we are sleeping. lol
I'm not crazy about the 8"+ units because they look like a tablet duct taped to the dashboard. The DDIN 7" all-glass units are supposed to be available soon. It would be nice if they'd increase the screen size on the DDIN units, there is enough bezel to increase to at LEAST 7.5, maybe even 8". You certainly don't need the row of capacitive buttons on Android, since they're just duplicated from on-screen buttons anyway!

Did you end up testing the multiple bt connection ? Like with a phone and an obd2?
Is the microphone 'visible' to Android on these? Ie, can you use voice commands ('Ok google'), etc?
I can't believe I'm considering going back down this road, but my Newsmy Android box bit the dust (head unit part is OK), and I don't have the time or energy to really push my DIY project.

Quickest thing to do would probably bring up some app (sound recorder?) that can use the MIC and see if it works. Google Maps, Google Search, etc.
I'm not familiar with the MTC series, but almost all of the android head units utilize an 'MCU' (in this case made my microntek) to control the analog audio sources, and mixes in the digital (Android) audio. That analog audio is typically not 'visible' to android (ie, you cannot record FM radio as the Android board only controls the operation of the radio through the MCU. It doesn't actually run that audio through an ADC back to Android.).
In most of the devices I've seen, the MIC port is wired to the Bluetooth HFP module, which is not actually part of the Android board. It's one of those 'analog sources' that the Android box can control through MCU commands, but the underlying I/O is invisible to the system.
How sturdy is it? I have a double din opening that is a little to small and would need to be trimmed to fit. I was thinking since the single din would be completely covered by the larger screen, I wouldn't need to modify the opening. Does it move when using it? I won't be able to stand it if it moves around or makes any rattle sounds. Thanks in advance for your input.

Seems sturdy. the screen mounts on 4 points to the single din, they are fully adjustable. It does not move at all when i touch it.
Where did you order your unit from? Amazon or directly from Joying? I would rather order through amazon for the better customer service but if they aren't shipping until the end of nov/beginning of dec I would order through Joying to receive it sooner.
Hey fellows,
using a Galaxy s7 edge since 1.5 years with a 3.5mm Headphonejack, I have to rethink, how to hear music on my Pixel 2 XL.

Im looking for cheap but good sounding earphones. Any hints?
Actually i guess im going to get Meizu EP51 as bluetooth earphones for running and gym. And now im searching for great wired type c phones.
Let me know, which one you'll get.

I'm in the same market, but am waiting to see what happens in the Google Assistant space. Googles website lists a few of the newer premium models that will support Google Assistant, but only some are in stock.
Libratone Q Adapt USB-C
Libratone Q Adapt BT (over ear)
Other models from AiAiAi and Master and Dymanic are coming soon, but most of them are over ear. There's a full list here.
I have the Rowkin's for my in ear bluetooth currently. Can't get much smaller than that.

Bluetooth 5 has a range 120 to 140 feet, as apposed to 33 feet with most 4.1 bluetooth devices. But you will need a bluetooth device that matches the bluetooth accessory to get the distance. There are also other enhancements such as multiple devices can be used at the same time. I read an articel on this a few weeks ago. I hope my memory has given you some big enhancements with bluetooth 5.

Bose sound sport wireless for the win. They are awesome sound quality. 150 bucks. In my opinion the new truly wireless 250 dollar ones aren't worth it.
I bought these when I was waiting on my Essential to come, and they actually worked really well. Wasn't sure about the whole noise cancelling thing, but since they don't need to be charged separately (the phone powers the noise cancelling), I figured I would give them a shot. Really liked them, but ended up returning the Essential in favor of the 2 XL, so now I'm just hoping they're compatible, but I'm hoping that won't be an issue...they're not the most comfortable, since they have the large rubber things so they stay in place for active folks (I'm not one of them), but I got used to them. And the noise cancelling and ambient noise feature are actually pretty useful. But they've been sitting dormant since I returned the Essential and came back to good old Shamu (If only I could find a reverse 3.5mm -> USB-C adapter hahah). The fact that I got them for like $80 (down from $200 which is just ridiculous) made it a pretty good deal in my mind. The 17th can't come soon enough!
PS I wanted earbuds and didn't want wireless, or anything that needed to be charged, but the options seem to be extremely limited at this point

Absolutely agree. I need good gym headphones that didnt cost $200, and didnt move or fall out or break from sweat. These things are fantastic and i got'm for like $60 from costco
I got these about a year ago but my Nexus 6p doesn't support apt-x (i know it can with some tweaking in Oreo) can't wait to try them out with my new Pixel next week

Lastly, since you asked about in ear USB-C, you can try https://www.zorloo.com/product-page/aero-digital-earphone-usb-c these out from Zorloo. I had a pair of their Micro-USB Ze:ro's and loved them.

How loud did they get? At 100% I would like the music to be uncomfortably loud.
I'm also extremely interested in the https://en-us.sennheiser.com/headphones-bluetooth-hd1-free - Sennheiser HD1 Free. The HD1 non free has great reviews.
I ordered these https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06Y686X78/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_ep_dp_Qa53zbXQQ9TVS - TaoTronics Bluetooth Headphones Model Ft-bh16 for a temporary pair and backup.

Yep, I love mine. They sound REALLY good for just being little earbuds. I've had very nice over-ear headphones, currently have a pair of AiAiAi's, and the fit beats are pretty good! Jump rope is the only thing I've found that makes them budge. Floor workouts, everything else they don't move.

Another agreed, they are excellent for my HIIT cardio workouts and reasonable price!
I love my PowerBeats 2. I previously tested a bunch of different Bluetooth headphones for the gym and these are the only ones that stay in my ears consistently and have excellent sound. Battery life is around 8 hours and the Bluetooth connection distance is quite good. I can put my phone on a ledge and work my way through a ~100ft area for the weights and never lose signal.
If I decide to go with the Pixel 2 XL (still debating) I'll be getting the PowerBeats 3 for the gym and leave my PowerBeats 2 at my office desk. One area of contention with the loss of the headphone jack is that I work from home full time and have various clients calling me multiple times a day. So I usually have a set of wired headphones sitting on my desk that I can quickly plug in before answering the phone. With the 2 XL I won't have that option so I'll resort to the PowerBeats 2 to always be ready to quickly turn on and pair.
For those wondering, the PowerBeats 3 are essentially the same as the previous generation but with an even greater Bluetooth signal range and longer battery life.
I have been using the Samsung Gear Circle for years. They sounds great, stay in my ear while at the gym and the battery seems to last forever.

I have the Plantronics Backbeat Fit, and I love them. They sound really good (not premium, high-end I don't think), they don't move around when I'm working out, and they are super comfortable. They have a new gen out too. I think I paid $65-70 for them open box?
I checked out reviews for all of the major headphone brands, also tried out a couple cheaper ones. Most did not fair well in reviews except this set, and the others I tried were not good.
Anyway, check out the link below.

These headphones have lasted through 2 washes for me. They sound great if you squeeze them into your ear canal, but I can't think of a way to keepnthem in like that. Otherwise they are great because they hang on and don't fall out.

Sony 1000xm2 just got delivered today!
So the Pixel Buds seem more like Pixel Duds according to the reviews, and I really cannot stand earbuds which don't seal the ear channel. I'm wondering if any of you have founds truly wireless earbuds they are truly satisfied with. I guess likely candidates are
Samsung Gear IconX (2018)
Bose SoundSport Fee
Jabra Elite Sport True
Bragi Dash Pro
Sony WF-1000X
B&O BeoPlay E8
but most revies on amazon/tech sites are hinting that they are just not completely market ready yet.
Really interested in what works best with the Pixel 2. Thanks!
Was actually thinking of buying the apple airpods for pixel 2

I've been enjoying these Treblab XR500 . I spent like $30 to $40 dollars at most for em off Amazon. They sound amazing. Sometimes you have to resync if u turn them on while music is playing. Can't go wrong either way

I bought airpods. It seems they work fine as long you use only with one devices.
But for me switching between 3 devices (Pixel 2, Android Tablet, Windows Laptop) was a nightmare.
I actually came to a point of frustration when I could not get airpods staying connected to my tablet, so I seriously consider returning them.
I love my Bragi Dash Pros, they sound great and have a lot of feature to them. The noise cancelling is excellent and the gestures are really nice once you get use to them.
Unfortunately, they suffer from the Pixel Bluetooth bug like many other BT headsets (Can prompt voice command, but it won't hear you, supposed to be fixed soon).
The biggest issue I have in general is their Bluetooth signal strength, I haven't had issues using them with the Pixel fortunately but on my OP5, just putting my phone in my back pocket would cause audio to cut in and out.
Odd thing is I could set my OP5 down and go over a room and they would be fine, so IDK.
Anyways:
Pros:
Great sound for BT headphones (especially with V4A!!)
lots of features (Alexa integration just got added too)
Great battery life (definitely get around 5 hours of use out them at work, pop them in the case when I go to lunch which holds a lot of charge, top back up quick!)
Cons:
No AptX
Expensive compared to some of the competition
BT connection could be better with certain devices
Got a Sennheiser CX BT7.00 bundled with the Google Pixel 2 as a pre-order offer. Have been using it for the past couple of days and must say it is making complete use of aptX.
I bought the MEIZU EP52 from here https://www.geekbuying.com/item/MEIZU-EP52-Bluetooth-Headphones-with-Mic-385260.html. They're $37. and sound good, especially for the price. I've paired them with several devices without problems. Also, one very important point is that the headphones are APT-X digital audio compatible. If you don't get APT-X on your headphones, when you watch a video the lip sync will most likely be off. There are reviews available on youtube.

Not necessarily, my Dash Pros don't have APTX and voice/lips are always in sync.

Those Dach Pros are awesome looking earbuds! I just realized that this thread was meant specifically for "truly" wireless earbuds. Anyway I was curious and checked the specs for the Dach Pros, apparently they suppport the AAC codec which has low latency. My Pixel 2 uses the AAC codec in my BMW and it sounds pretty good.
Anyone use headphones, not ear buds? Thinking of good Bluetooth headphones that work with the Pixel 2.
Cheap and cheerful, but they work well. It has quite possibly the "best" Chinese accented voice guide for pairing in the world.

Bose Quietcomfort 35 works great with my Pixel 2.
With the support of high def bluetooth codec from Oreo, I would go for something that has APT-X support at least. LDAC would be even better but the choices are limited for now.
I use my good old SBH-80 (APT-X), and MDR-1000X (LDAC).
For high quality, you might consider Astell & Kern XB10 aptX HD bluetooth converter for wired headphones. Despite it being bluetooth, sounds better with Pixel 2 than any wired phone connection I have ever had.

After seeing all the praise on the web, I bought QC35 II. This is something I'd not suggest, except if you plan to use it ONLY for listening to music, as the bluetooth lag is terrible. Around 0.5 sec lag makes games unplayable, and videos unwatchable. I think it's a shame that Bose couldn't implement aptX LL, especially considering the price of this piece of.... wonder.
Also a QC35 II for sale here, perfectly new, only tested once.
Using the Cowin E7, they fluctuate between $39 on sale and around $70 when not on Amazon. Last a very long time, very comfy good sound. I started using them instead of ear-muffs in the freezing weather
I just bought the i.tech H2 which supports aptx-HD and LDAC, they cost about $105. They sound awesome with my Pixel 2.http://www.itechdynamic.com/list_of_products/prostereoh2/

$200 and I'm risking it
The QC35 II is probably great for airplane duty with 20 hours of battery life and Bose legendary noise cancelling technology. My only reservation would be that it doesn't include a higher bit rate Bluetooth codec. LDAC does make a difference.

Luckily it was from an eBay seller, so I could send it back. Felt like ****, first time in my life had I send back something like that.
In the meantime I tried Sony's newest LDAC headphones in a store, but lag was quite the same. So for me it seems currently there is no viable alternative for wired headsets, at least through Bluetooth.
Get the ear-studio from radsone with aptxhd and a pair of Sennheiser hd25. This combo sounds way way better than any bluetooth headphones out there. It even sounds far better than most consumer head phones with cable connection.
Edit: some links.

I bought 2 of these (one for me and one for the wife)
Bluedio T2s Bluetooth Headphones On Ear with Mic, 57mm Driver Rotary Folding Wireless Headset, Wired and Wireless headphones for Cell Phone/ TV/ PC, 40 Hours Play Time (Black) https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00Q2VIW9M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_FMCGAb4RDD9P8
I bought the black one and blue for my wife. Blue looks better in my opinion.
Great sound for the price!

I have tried my new i.tech H2 earbuds in several modes, aptx, aptx-HD, and LDAC. LDAC sounds better to me than aptx-HD by quite a margin, I'm very impressed, the DAC in those headphones is excellent. I just needed to get some good rubber eartip replacements, they make a big difference also.
Lag is another issue. I experimented with the three codecs and came to the conclusion that LDAC and aptx-HD were about the same for that. The lag is still much less than SBC but if you are sensitive to it like I am then it is still noticeable. I did find that after I sideloaded the February security patch the lag seemed less...maybe it's just a headfake, I don't know. These earbuds sound so good that I can live with a little bit of lag, without a headphone jack, the other options are a bit of a hassle.

Sound was pristine with both headphones, I was amazed by the noise cancellation too. But the lag is not a compromise I can live with.
There are more and more quality games on Android I'd love to try, some with amazing sounds. But when the sound comes half second after you jump, shoot, or even just click....... you can imagine. Hard to believe I don't see much more people finding this unacceptable. Or they just still have the jack, I don't know.

I can confirm that my headphones using LDAC or aptx-HD still have a bit of lag. I am quite sensitive to lag while watching TV on my phone. I find it minimal though, maybe with gaming it is more obvious or maybe the headphones make a difference. I'll check another pair of headphones I have with standard aptx and compare the lag to my new ones.
Got myself a pair of JBL E55BTs for 100EUR. Sound is decent and lag is barely noticeable to the point I start doubting it's there at all.
This morning I did a test with two of my new bluetooth headsets, the i.tech M2 and the Meizu EP52. The M2 sounds better and can play aptx, aptx-HD and LDAC. LDAC sounds the best but after testing lag carefully from the same source, aptx has the least amount of lag by quite a margin. Then I tried the EP52, the best codec they support is aptx so I compared them with the M2 in aptx mode. I was surprised and disappointed to discover that the EP52 had practically no lag at all and the M2, which sounds better, still had some lag using aptx. The moral to the story is that aptx seems to have the least lag and that lag time is headphone specific.
For those that aren't aware of it, with the Pixel 2 you can force the codec by going to settings-system-developer options and scroll down to the bluetooth codec area. The M2 defaults to LDAC, I needed to manually switch it to aptx in the menu. The EP52 defaults to aptx since that is the best codec that it supports.
To activate developer options go to settings-system-about phone-then tap on build number multiple times until it grants you developer status. You will then find develper options under settings-system.
