Hello all developers, I have a noob question, please guide. I have ZenFone 2 running on stock android 5.0 and it is rooted. Now I have to flash custom roms and mods but also want to update stock Rom to android 6.0 whenever ASUS provide updates. So I have a simple idea as below -
1) Install flashify app.
2) Take backup of stock recovery.
3) Flash CWM.
4) Take nandroid backup.
5) Now I can flash custom roms.
6) When ASUS provide updates, flash nandroid backup.
7) Flash stock recovery through Flashify.
8) Full unroot from supersu.
Thus my phone will be fully stock and I can update stock Rom to android 6.0 .
Will this trick work; please tell. I am eagerly waiting for your replies.

you have to unlock bootloader if you want to flash custom rom !!!
if you unlock bootloader with official tools. you cant receive any update from asus with OTA. but you can flash full stock rom with twrp via sideload or edit stock rom zip then install with twrp.
somebody can unlock bootloader without official tools (i dont try) and they can update OTA
srr my english

Thank you very much for the information. Btw, can I make changes to stock Rom without unlocking bootloader and revert back to fully stock phone when OTA comes with the above method ?

i dont see why you wouldnt still get ota updates. i could be wrong, but pretty sure youll still get them
for flashing to stock, rooting, and unlocking you can use the nexus root toolkit.
http://www.wugfresh.com/nrt/
it will automatically download the stock image file which contains the stock recovery. i think its boot.img (within the stock file). you can also manually download the stock file here: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
edit: heres a good thread that you missed

im not 100% sure because this is my first nexus device. but on my n7000 (international galaxy note) i got updates just fine with a custom recovery.
use the tool kit in my first post to flash stock recovery.
I got an OTA update on my deb/LTE with TWRP and SuperSU on it.
After the update stock recovery was flashed and my deb was unrooted again.
Just flashed TWRP back and the SuperSU zip. Everything is working fine!:good:
@shyd

Sure, otherwise I couldn't alter the recovery!
The bootloader lock/unlock state hasn't been changed by the OTA update!
Excellent, thanks all.

Also, if you want the OTA but don't want to have to unlock and root again, people usually post a flashable update that you can install via your custom recovery.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T999 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I'm on stock rooted Sense --401.4 and I want to update to --401.5 version. I have s-off, and custom recovery, and am rooted.
Although I have a constant "system update" notification on my notification bar, I really cannot update because of the custom recovery. Is there any fully stock version of the latest ROM available which I can flash to update? Mike1986 hasn't provided it yet. Is there any other way to update easily? I really don't want to switch to custom ROMs for the update, and I really don't want to factory reset my phone right now.
Is there any way we can flash OTA update .zips? If yes, I really cannot find them on XDA, so can anyone guide me to them (and a guide on how to flash them?). Thank you.
You can flash stock recovery.img and then perform Update. İ tried and it is working. But you lose root. After Update Flash Custom recovery and supersu zip.

Thanks, I'll try this
This is a public service announcement to save people headaches. RTFM. You cannot ever now, or in the past, take an OTA with a custom recovery. You must always have a stock recovery and system to do so. Period. If you do install a custom recovery, freeze the update center with Titanium, Rom Toolbox, or the like, so that you will remember you have a custom recovery and not accidentally take an update.
I hope this helps someone out there
So what is the simplest way to update to the OTA firmware with a phone that is rooted with twrp, and a custom ROM? Is there a way to disable twrp without having to un-root? That way it might be possible to update to the OTA firmware. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

.this is referring to stock software updates, unless it's updates of the rom, which you won't even receive if you're on a custom rom...to update a custom rom, you just download the updated version, or the OTA if the rom is so capable, and flash it in twrp like the first version you downloaded

Wait for a flashable zip for TWRP. You can revert to stock to take an OTA. Being rooted is not a problem per se, it's the custom recovery and having non stock roms. In theory you could flash the stock recovery and bootloader and then take an OTA. However, not having stock system/apps could likely create havoc
In case you do happen to try and install it, here's a fix for your bootloops: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=60117595
I have unlocked my bootloader, installed a TWRP, and flashed a custom ROM. Everything is working fine, but I just want to know how to return to stock if I wanted to. Is it just as simple as flashing the latest OTA? Do I have to re-lock my bootloader?
Thanks!
You can easily return firmware and/or recovery to stock by flashing, but currently there is no way to relock the bootloader.

I'm sort of a noob when it comes to this stuff. I usually just follow guides to get what I'm looking for.
So would I just download the latest OTA and flash that? Can someone share some simple instructions on how this is done?
Thanks!
When you want to flash back to stock from custom, are the steps the following?
1)Download stock rom from asus
2)Format phone
3)Flash stock ROM from custom recovery?
The reason I ask is because there is a guide that says you need to edit the stock rom when flashing from custom rom/recovery.. Link to his guide here: GUIDE FOR FULL ROM
my m9 has received an android 6 update massage. but after installing, the phone restarts in custom recovery.

In order to upgrade to official MM....you need a stock recovery image...and a stock system image...
Search for...and flash your stock recovery....if that is the only thing you have changed....g

i know that i can flash custom roms with custom recovery. is it possible for me to download an stock system image and flash it with custom recovery the same way? i do not want to make everything back to its original. i want a rooted android 6 with custom recovery.
-----------------
i had some search. if i upgrade to stock android, then i will have to root my phone again and for that i have to flash a custom recover again. i searched and find out that android revolution custom ROM is a good choice for ones how wants to keep HTC Sense.
thank you for your support.
Check here for possible stock system images and recoveries...
You should be able to flash a stock system backup from this thread...to include recovery....then take your OTA....and flash TWRP afterwards....
Just make sure everything matches your carrier....cid/mid....so the outcome is favorable...g
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3132698
You'll quickly find, if you haven't already, that the latest Android Revolution HD (v20) requires you to have the latest firmware. Flashing it without it will throw your phone into a boot loop.

If he has removed his carrier's bloatware as well as the custom recovery, would he have to flash the system image also?
Or just flash the recovery?
I am asking as many AT&T users often root to remove AT&T bloatware, like I did. I used HTCDev.com to root, and my bootloader is unlocked.

Flashing a stock RUU will guarantee that the system and recovery are completely stock...
The OTA scans the device prior to update and will detect any software that isn't signed or official...
I'd RUU back to stock...then OTA will prompt....and won't get stuck trying to update the system partition...g
