verizon m9 fails to load recover, OS won't boot, stuck in fastboot / download[solved] - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi everyone, add me to the list of idiots that shouldn't be doing things like this...
i bought an xtc2clip and should have stopped there, without using it. i had trouble writing files to the chip through their software (latest 1.18). but while poking around, i got s-off. so far so good. when i tried to copy the files over to unlock the bootloader, it kept giving me an error, so i gave up on the xtc2clip (yes, i changed the ribbon cable many times...).
so just after getting s-off, i was able to install TWRP through fastboot. keep in mind, my phone was still s-off, but bootloader locked. i booted TWRP several times just to check things out... all seemed OK.
i then installed SuperSU, using TWRP. i downloaded the 2.46 zip, placed it on my SD card and installed from within TWRP.
i rebooted, and the phone hung on the red verizon screen... i left it like that for at least ten minutes. i was able to reboot through adb, but it never progressed beyond the red verizon screen.
i did some reading, and found other users in a similar state flashed a new ROM to get around that. i then flashed adnybones' Stock Deodexed *Official* -- 3.10.605.7 i found here on XDA.
now - my phone had updated to the latest firmware - so per andybones' instructions, i flashed the 3.10.605.7 linked from his howto.
the flash went OK. i installed the ROM, that seemed to go OK. i rebooted and observed different boot animation - that was a good sign. then the phone hung for over 10 minutes again, never loading the OS.
now, i can reboot to fastboot or download, but cannot boot the OS. the phone goes immediately to fastboot, and will not boot to recovery. it will boot to download, but not recovery...
so i can't get into TWRP and i can't get into the OS.
help?!?!??!?

I have actually used the clip to s-off a VZW M9. It wasn't able to unlock the bootloader at the time, but I was able to flash TWRP and install SU on the stock OS. I then used the shell command to unlock the bootloader.
You stated that your bootloader was never unlocked, and you flashed a custom rom. If that is the case then you need to unlock the bootloader and reflash your custom rom. You will probably need to flash the same VZW stock rom you had prior to flashing a custom rom.
Here is the link to unlocking the bootloader if you are s-off:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3092036
[how to] lock/unlock your bootloader without htcdev(s-off required)
Doesn't the clip now support unlocking VZW M9? Update the xtc software and try again maybe?
If not you will need to flash a stock rom, install SU, and follow the instructions from the link above for unlocking. Once you are unlocked you can start flashing roms.
This is all based on the assumption that your bootloader is locked.
If I misunderstood or you are actually unlocked and forgot to mention it, please disregard everything above.

the xtc2clip has two methods to unlock the bootloader. neither will work for me... the "bootloader unlock" tab throws an error when i try to copy the files over the the sd card (i've tried multiple cables and repeated many, many times - something isn't right with this hardware). the newer method, in the "special unlock" tab appears to work, but my phone did nothing after booting with the card installed. and yes, i've seen the other discussions, videos and pics of how to install the sd card. i was able to verify the phone sees the card in the OS, and i'm using the sdcard cradle that came with the phone.
the bootloader status consistently read *** LOCKED *** - so there is no doubt about it.

yes - the problem is that i need root in order to follow those... the problem started after flashing SuperSU. i cannot follow that guide unless i have SU working and an adb shell open to the phone. installing SuperSU is what landed my in fastboot-only land.

xtc2clip says it does, and i'm certain people can use it to do so... but i've only gotten errors when it tries to write to the sd card. i have manually copied files to the sdcard in the xtc2clip - that's how i got s-off and supercid. i've had nothing but problems trying to use the xtc2clip, and now with s-off, i'm hoping there is a simpler way to do this through adb / fastboot shell. is there?

yeah - that's all correct. bootloader is locked, s-off, will boot only to fastboot.
where is the original ROM that came with this phone?? i'll try reflashing that...

well... i did everything to the letter, and the phone doesn't install the image. in download mode, the phone displays a message at the bottom that the sd card isn't mounted. i tried to check the sd card from within download mode, and it displayed something about smart sd card not found, or something similar.
the sd card is formatted exFat, so maybe i need to format it fat32? it's a 128gb card, i can try again with an 8gb fat32, but i thought exFat was supported...
for the record, i did everything to the letter - even copied the file name from the site to avoid typoing the name... it's a zero, not an O, that sort of thing.
i'll post more information when i have time.
any other help??

Yes format to Fat 32 and it is a zero, also make sure its the only file on the sd card and no bigger than 32gb card

OH! well then, i'll give it another go when i get back to it.
Thanks a lot!

Mr Troop, you're a life saver - thank you very much.
Now if I may be a pest, how do i unlock the bootloader? I keep finding this howto:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/general/how-to-lock-unlock-bootloader-htcdevs-t3092036
which is what c5satellite2 pointed me too as well, but this won't work for me since i don't have working SU.
it seems like i need root to unlock the bootloader, but i need to unlock the bootloader (apparently) to get SU...
i have read about 50 different threads spanning the last year+, and I'm not having a lot of luck...
your help is greatly appreciated!

right! that's the whole problem. verizon has locked the bootloader, and HTC isn't unlocking verizon phones...
this is killing me. i pay hundreds of dollars for a product, and it's loaded with their bloatware and i can't run an adblocker???
it's insulting.

HTC does not allow devices with a Verizon CID to be unlocked.
Your S-Off, You would need a way to switch to superCID (or any other nonVerizon CID) in order to oem unlock.
but not 100% sure so i would leave it and do some research check back tomorrow :good:

I was able to write the super cid, but I can't get the device string ........ Adb barfs, because oem unlocking can't be enabled.

Edit: n/m, saw you tried this already.
I know there's a way to do this, but you'll have better luck asking in the Verizon M9 forums. Many, many people have unlocked their bootloaders, HTC and Verizon notwithstanding.

From what I can recall, I did exactly that. Installed twrp, and had it install su. Then I unlocked boot loader. It doesn't make sense, but it worked.

Twrp 2.9.0.1 and supersu 2.65. Only that combo seems to work. That is how mine and many others are set up.
Htcdev to unlock bootloader but you need oem unlocking ticked in the rom.
If adb doesn't work its because you dont have usb debugging enabled in the rom. You only have fastboot access for now. But thats ok because thats all you need to flash twrp 2.9.0.1 and supersu 2.65.

Ok so my buddy wanted me to update his phone with latest ota. I flashed the ruu to update it but for some reason it went crazy. Everything force closes on startup. Unlocked bootloader installed cwm. Tried flashing anything. Nothing worked.
So reinstalled ota. Seemed to be the only thing I could do bc of bootloader being hboot 1.02. I now have some of the apks not force closing but can't unlock bootloader again. Nightmare phone. My goal is to root and downgrade. Not sure if its possible to downgrade bootloader but would be nice. I can't open market, can't push files and have no file explorer.
Ran through unlock steps through HTCdev and can't get it to except unlock code bin. Can't use any pb31img files to get a working Rom. I've literally tried everything I can think of. Can anyone smart help lol. I am pretty good at this but I royally f***** myself with the bootloader I believe. No ruu works. Thanks in advance

Why wont PB31IMG.zips's work does hboot not find the file, or does it give a too new error?
What error are you getting when trying to unlock the bootloader?
Says error image is older than current version or something to that extent

Try this one http://dinc.does-it.net/Stock_Images/4.08.605.15/PB31IMG.zip. It is the newest ota so it should flash.
Does it have anything in the data part? The last ota zip had system image but no data which I believe caused the apps to all fc. I'm away from my computer for the weekend won't be back til Sunday. Thank you for the link though. I do appreciate the help

Ok I flashed that through bootloader. It successfully installed. On reboot, everything force closed. It's like every time I reset the phone it reinstalls the apps. Even after clearing storage, the apps all show up in app drawer, but none of them actually open. I tried to unlock bootloader through htcdev again, and it gives me an error that the signature isn't right. Every time I get identifier token, its a different code. This phone has become a huge PITA. So I'm stuck with no custom recovery, unable to unlock bootloader, and unable to do anything on the phone bc all apps are FC. Is there a way to reinstall NAND? Or wipe it? I'm pretty stuck.

You dont need to unlock it through the htcdev site again. Just use the original unlock_token.bin file you got the first time you unlocked it.
Have you tried a factory reset from hboot since you ran the ruu?

Trying a factory reset now, the unlock bin file wouldn't work. I've tried 3 different attempts and none will work.
update: after finding the original unlcok.bin thing and using it to unlock, it did indeed work.. brain fart. after that I managed to (hours later) acquire root and now s-off. Still booted up force closed everything. Went into CWM tried installing custom ROM. Flashes successfully but won't get past the boot screen. Resets into recovery and nothing seems to work. I don't understand how it is s-off yet I can't flash a ROM.
update 2: starting to think the system is bad. Is it possible that the flash memory may be read-only and/or corrupt? I have a completely unlocked device that won't take an RUU or custom ROM. I think that the fact that the apps keep showing up after system wipes that wherever they are written can not be modified. Afraid to try a different RUU in fear of losing s-off or locking the bootloader. I'm guessing this device is just done.

Latest update MHC19J how to flash twrp

So I just got my nexus 5x and it looks like I cant just do the simple fastboot oem unlock and then flash twrp image, which makes me sad (I thought unlocking your phone was pretty much a red flag for "im going to do things to you" so why all the new "security" measures?). Since I'm on the latest update MHC19J, and it seems a modified boot image is not available (unless Im just overlooking it) am I just kinda stuck at the moment until said image is available? (sans the "yeah you could just modify one yourself" comment).
What are you talking about? Before unlocking have you checked OEM unlocking from Developer tools? After this you need to flash Twrp, boot into it directly from bootloader and flash SUPERSU. That should be the minimal steps in order to keep the custom recovery in place.

There is a guide and a sticky roll up that have had a lot of time spent writing up with all this info in them.

I should have included in my post that Im only seeking help after reading everything I could find and still being at a loss. Perhaps i misunderstood the directions, or maybe the fact that Im not looking to root my device, only flash twrp and move to a custom rom right away, that Ive overlooked a step as ive ignored all the rooting steps.
So this guide says to just unlock your device (i have) and then just run fastboot flash recovery twrp.img (also did this) and I should be good (it didnt work, it gave me that warning screen).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-5x/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3206930
This guide looks slightly different:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-5x/general/guide-how-to-install-custom-recovery-t3231143
1]Unlock bootloader- fastboot oem unlock [select yes by pressing volume up and then power button to confirm]
2] Reboot & skip everything in setup as we data will be wiped again!
3] Reboot into bootloader & flash the modified boot image- fastboot flash boot boot.img (This is the part that im asking about as there doesnt appear to be a modified image for me to flash)
4] Reboot into system to make sure it's booting properly! [May not be necessary!]
5] Reboot into bootloader again & flash twrp- fastboot flash recovery "recovery name".img
This is really what I want to achieve. Disabling Encryption and flashing TWRP so I can flash a custom rom. Not interested in the slightest about rooting a stock rom.
So thats where im stuck,no worries, I did attempt to RTFM :]

You're not following the right guide. You don't have to bother with encryption, just use the latest twrp after unlocking the bootloader and flash that IMG file in fastboot. Twrp works with encryption now you don't have to decrypt

Thanks for the reply. I wonder what went wrong the first time though. Cause i did unlock the bootloader, rebooted and let android load, rebooted into bootloader and flashed twrp 3.0.0.0 and it gave me a weird "cannot be verified" message when I tried to boot into recovery.

That happens on Nexus phones. Just give it a second and it'll boot up. It's just a warning telling that you unlocked the bootloader. Make sure you're using the very latest version of twrp available in the site, it ends in a 1 I believe

Disabling encryption does give you a speed increase. It may or may not be noticeable for your use but the majority can see the difference.
So you have to decide between security and a snappier phone.
Just remember to back all your data up as this requires wiping your data and possibly a clean flash and either switching from the stock rom to another rom(Most have the forced encryption disabled) or when on stock rom either flash another kernel or flash supersu in systemless mode.

[Request] HTC 10 Japan (HTV32/pmeuhljapan) Backup/RUU/etc

Made a series of mistakes that led me to only have access to fastboot and recovery. It appears I'm capable of flashing things in fastboot. I can't access download mode at all (gives me an error saying it's unable to boot into download mode), which I believe you need in order to flash RUUs in the first place.
If anybody has a TWRP backup of system and boot that'd be awesome, but really need an img of download mode or a RUU or something to help me recover everything to normal. I am S-OFF and bootloader is unlocked.

How do you have fastboot when fastboot comands are done from download mode? Dont you have a stock system image that you made?
He means bootloader mode, the white screen. I think OP is SOL. That's why it's important to make backups, especially for exotic devices. I'm not sure if it's possible, but since he's s-off his best bet would be to convert to an unlocked or Verizon device if at all possible just to get the device working again and wait for either an ruu or backup.
If he is soffed he can flash an international ruu

How did you go with this, OP? I just got the HTV32 (HTC10) here in Japan, and unlike previous HTC's I have owned here (Desire, M7), there seems to be no RUUs for Japan anywhere (or am I not looking hard enough...). Website HTCsoku seems very short on info on this model, and the former repository for all things HTC in Japan for modders and tinkerers, 'Scottish Vinegar', has disappeared. Will be getting Sunshine then flashing TWRP and SuperSU soon, but I always like to have the option of stock images, etc., handy, just in case things go tits up.
I remembered the case of failure to entering Download Mode in M9 which solution is flashing the hosd image (extract from firmware), you can give it a try

Unfortunately was not able to get a hold of the stock RUU. I took my phone to my carrier and they gave me a new one free of charge despite the unlocked bootloader, S-OFF and TWRP being installed. Was just more careful on the replacement phone.
I actually am still looking for a stock RUU though.
Personally I made a TWRP backup before installing SuperSU. That way I can update with OTAs later on. (once we get an OTA we'll be able to pull the stock recovery img from it and update without issue).
Trying to convert this model to an international model was a terrible mistake. Au KDDI does not play well with these types of things. My Butterfly 3 is permanently SIM locked on AU's network for attempting the same thing (was trying to get Marshmallow at the time, which coincidentally is being released for the device next week).
I have been running Xposed and SuperSU with no issues at all though. If you get any "device encrypted" error after S-OFFing, just factory reset the data in TWRP.
Many domo's, DarkRazorZ!
I read that twrp-3.0.2-6-pme.img is the one to go for - that what you used?
Good you had no grief from HTC Japan. I actually sent back my M7 for the purple camera issue a few years back and did very little to disguise the fact it was unlocked and S-Offed. I think they are all fellow modders there and don't give a damn what we do. One reason why HTC is awesome.
I am now waiting for Nougat on the HTC10 (they (AU) just did a press release that it will be pushed soon), and as soon as that is on my phone, I shall be going the Sunshine route and installing aforementioned TWRP and so on. Getting fidgety, though... Xposed, Amplify, ad blocking... lemme at 'em.

Hey I was wondering if you could help me on how to get a replacement device, I ran into the same problem as you did. Thanks
Hello DarkRazorZ.
I'm curious about your attempt to convert HTV32 to international.
It couldn't be done because of hardware compatibility issue among HTV32 and international?
Or because of just your own mistake in the process?
Did you try a method like this?

I'm in Japan and considering to buy HTV32, and I want to use it with international firmware.
I know this is your thread, but I can't find any information about this on web.
So could you share me your knowledge. Thanks.
the us unlocked version can be used on KDDI Au but the verizon radio has to be flashed for it to work and even then, you will only get 2g speeds.

No, I'm considering to buy HTV32(= HTC10 for Japan region), not other.
Well I'll make a new thread about this issue.
Thanks for replying Quadrider10, and sorry for disturbing DarkRazorZ.
Made a series of mistakes that led me to only have access to fastboot and recovery. It appears I'm capable of flashing things in fastboot. , which I believe you need in order to flash a stock or RUUs in the first place.
If anybody has a TWRP backup of system and boot that'd be awesome, but really need an img of download mode or a RUU or something to help me recover everything to normal. I am S-OFF and bootloader is unlocked.

i already follow that tutor yesterday.. but when i insert token number the site always says error 170 "CID not allowed"

I'm having trouble restoring my bootloader to locked

I tried the RUU Zip way and I put the zip on the SD card and when I tried to run it it gave me the error 19 RU_MAIN_VER_FAIL os-version in android-info missing or i . My CID is BS_US001. I just want to be able to use Android pay. My bootloader is unlocked. If anyone has an easier way to lock the damned thing please let me know. I rather not root it at all. I didn't know the bootloader was unlocked when I bought it a year ago.
Your bootloader being unlocked won't affect Android Pay, you just need to go back to stock, and you're on the right path. It's probably just a bad zip.
First, delete any RUU.zips you have on your extSD
Download this
Rename it by deleting everything in the name of the .zip except for 2PS6IMG (and .zip of course) and place it onto your extSD
Boot to download mode and follow the prompts
After you've flashed the RUU.zip, delete it from your extSD. If you don't, every time you boot to download mode your phone will try to update again.
Good luck!

Why did you lock your bootloader? Just trying random stuff without knowing what you're doing?
Can you boot to recovery? If so, go to TWRP > Advanced > File Manager and navigate to /data/system/ and delete the locksettings.db file. Then you won't need the password anymore to decrypt and restore your backup.
If you're S-Off you can probably stop there, but if you want your bootloader unlocked, you'll have to do it through htcdev.com again

That was fixed a LONG time ago

EDIT: Ahh, I forgot about what I responding to in that. I thought the response was a question about Magisk. So yeah, unlocked bootloader without magisk won't work. I was probably drinking beers when I replied to that
I quit worrying about passing safteynet as soon as Magisk was in Beta

Need help getting back to stock from weird FW

Hello,
I bought a Fire HD 8 (2018) from ebay, but it gives me some headaches. There is almost nothing on it, no playstore (neither amazon nor google), no browser, only six basic apps like a calculator. And there is something called WebView Browser Tester. When I enter Recovery and do a factory reset it reverts to this exact stage. I was able to use adb to install VLC Player but it acts a little strange. But when I install Google Playstore (+ Framework, Account Manager, Services) it will crash. Rebooting after that will end in a bootloop, that can only be broken by several attempts trying to get into recovery and do a reset.
So, I think this device once belonged to a developer. It also identifies itself as "kayak" in recovery menu. So I assumed it was unlocked at some point. But when I try to use fastboot to flash it, it states "locked hw". ADB sideload is not available.
I don't know what to do right now. I spend last night doing research without much success. Pretty much all Unlock-Tutorials assume that you are on stock firmware, and the ones for getting back to stock assume you have twrp installed which is also not the case here.
Hope somebody can help me getting this thing working again.
Thanks in advance,
Scoop
Can you unlock the BL
Well, I'm not quite sure how to do that. I only started to dive into the topic by yesterday. Do I have to setup a linux system to do that or is there another way?
Bro…. What are you trying to do if you did not unlock the BootLoader. Just follow a normal guide. Google.
Google brought me here ^^ I wanted to aks if there is en easier way to unlock it then opening it up and setting up a linux boot drive, given that the device has clearly been tinkered with before. I thought, it might be a "known" custom rom that has been to it flashed before. Just trying not to brick it...
But thanks for your answer.
I meant using fast boot….
Now you got me confused. I'm really sorry, but could you be a bit more specific? When I try to use the unlock command I'm always getting the error "the command you input is restricted on locked hw".

do these (not at the same time, wait to boot into bootloader then do second and third cmd)
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flashing unlock
fastboot reboot
That's exactly what I did. I also tried fastboot oem unlock instead of fast flashing unlock. But I'm always getting the same error "command restricted on locked hw".
I read on some site that "OEM unlock" must be enabled in developer options to have this working, but there is no such option.
ohhhhhh. Then your device is not unlockable.
I managed to unlock it via the hardware mod, but I'm stuck after that. It won't boot into recovery. Is there a way to flash the firmware just with fastboot access?

If you did the hardware unlock all the way through, you should have TWRP recovery. From that you can flash anything.

Have you had any success?
I have the exact same issue, and this is pretty much the only topic that shows up when searching "Kayak".
Fire Toolbox v30.3 doesn't like it either
'Codename "kayak" isn't supported/recognized by the Toolbox. Please plug in a supported Fire tablet and try again.'
What model is on the back there are hardware revisions of the 8 2018 L5S83A: Normal OG revision K29A5E: Pre production model for patching CLK Exploit
