HTC Desire 816 Dual SIM, only boots into Fastboot! - Desire 816 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My HTC Desire 816 Dual SIM,
1. does not boot normally,
2. only boots into FASTBOOT page,
3. in FASTBOOT page I can select and enter Hboot page,
4. in Hboot menu, when I select RECOVERY, or FACTORY RESET, it returns only to FASTBOOT page.
5. as the attachment shows, there is nothing written in front of "OS-"; it is blank.
Questions:
1. In these conditions, is it possible to flash the ZIP ROM from sdcard via Hboot?
2. Is it not necessary to flash stock recovery, wipe some partitions, etc first, and only then proceed to flashing ZIP ROM from sdcard via Hboot?

Hi
I have the same problem as you only my. HTC is the sIngle sim A5-UL Version.
So far I have not had any replies regarding the problem.
Hopefully we will get a resolution
sometime.

It should be but you will need to have the stock recovery reinstalled by first unlocking your bootloader then flashing back your stock recovery then relock bootloader and then flash the RUU or stock zip file thru either ADB /fastboot on your computer or via SD card and renaming the image OP9CIMG and hboot should pick it up and flash it automatically. Did you accidentally wipe your system or try to flash something that corrupted it? In other words what happened before all this? We're you rooted with a custom recovery or still on stock?

Dwnload ur respective RUU zip file, rename the file to. "0P9CIMG.zip". put in ext.sd card ,put the phone in hboot mode..it will autimatically detect the file and will ask for permission

Did you find ROM zip and did you try to flash it via sdcard and Hboot?

1. I tried to unlock bootloader but the last stage that asks Yes or No, did not appear on my phone and therefore no unlocking happened as the attachment shows. Can you help me with this problem?
2. I wiped nothing and flashed nothing. The phone was working normally and the battery finished. I plugged the charger but when I tried to turn on the phone it only booted to fastboot mode as I explained in the original post.
3. I was on the original ROM that came with phone. I never did any manipulation.

Because my phone has behaved abnormally (OS- is blank, as attachment shows; unlocking bootloader did not show Yes or No page; and other abnormalities), I am not sure whether to download a file over 1.20GB, or not? I am afraid about failure! Is not my phone in a situation that needs some preparations before doing what you said?

Hi
Thanks for reply. I was attempting to go back to stock and had installed stock recovery and then relocked the bootloader and when i tried to install the RUU it said it was the wrong one.
I then tried the Hboot way but received the same error. I need to find several RUUs to be able to find the correct version for my 816 which i believe is Asian but not sure where.

Oh, ok I get it now. Think the forum I linked you to was for the European a5_ul. Here's a link to some a5_ul roms kitkat and lollipop. I see one of the lollipop versions is Asia. Try to match your CID and version ID or at least your radio ID's before flashing it. "fastboot getvar all" will give you most of that info but it looks like that might be your firmware. Also make sure you relocked your bootloader before flashing. Good luck

Sorry, I wasn't trying to accuse you of doing something to your phone but those pictures don't show me any of that. It just shows that you seem to no longer have an OS with your lack of a CID and something happened to cause this. It's not about finger pointing but getting the issue resolved for you I know. As for helping you unlock your bootloader the method is pretty straight forward and if it didn't work for whatever reason the only real advice I can give is to just try it again. That's how I unlocked mine so maybe it was just a glitch and another attempt will work. For now I'm more concerned that you didn't wipe anything yet your recovery and firmware seen too be missing or at least inaccessible from your bootloader. The factory reset was going to be my first suggestion but since your already done that have you tried to enter your recovery thru ADB/fastboot? (fastboot reboot recovery.) The other thing is what region are you in( India, Asia, European) and does " fastboot getvar all" work from using ADB? Also if your OS is wiped then any RUU flash will reformat your partitions for you and restore your rom. Also were you on kitkat or lollipop stock rom?

Hi
Again thanks for the reply.
My 816 A5UL is Asia-HK-CHT
CID-622
I cannot find a RUU that matches.
I believe the Rom could be OPc21000
Which i cannot find anywhere.

Yeah I've never heard of that version before. I only found one link here below that even mentions that CID but no solution. If you haven't flashed the one I linked I'd try it anyway because as long as your S on the signed rom won't flash if it's the wrong one but if your sure it's wrong then save the data hit to your ISP cap. Sorry I wasn't of more help to you.

You are being kind to me by trying to resolve my problem.
1. I tried again but it did not help.
2. I will try "fastboot reboot recovery", and tell you about the result.
3. Through online chat I gave my IMEI to HTC middle east and they told me that my Software Version is 2.34.401.2.
4. " fastboot getvar all" works.
5. You said "if your OS is wiped then any RUU flash will reformat your partitions". Can we be sure that it is wiped? If we can not be sure, is it necessary to do wipes and formats?
6. I was on Lollipop. 5.0.2.

Since you never unlocked the bootloader before, flashing the stock rom(ruu) should work. Give it a shot. Just make sure you flash the same Android version that you had before as downgrading might not work.

1. That's fine. For now it's OK that it's locked. It's only if your stock recovery is gone that you would need to unlock the bootloader and reflash the stock recovery zip file that you would need to find and flash. Hopefully it's still there just inaccessible for now.
2. Just an idea to verify your recovery is still there
3. OK then that's the firmware you want to flash or higher version
4. From that it should have your CID and version ID but if it's corrupted or wiped it may not show. Those 2 are what you usually use to verify the firmware your flashing is the correct version for your region. You can also verify your radio ID as well as most firmware zips show those numbers as well.
5. It's OK an RUU file will reformat everything and bring it all back to stock. It has all the images in it (radio, system, recovery etc.)
6. That's good. Just make sure you flash that version or higher as going down in firmware isn't possible without S off. If you flash the wrong firmware then the signed RUU shouldn't flash.
Also what region are you in ( India, Asia, Europe?) your phones firmware (CID is your carriers region) that you flash needs to match you're CID.

1. How did you know that the stock recovery is "still there just inaccessible for now"?
2. I will try after 35 hours from now.
4. INFOmodelid: 0P9C70***

The picture attached to original post shows: RADIO-INVALID_VER_INFO

About region: my CID is HTC_J15. And as my search shows, 401 (in my Software Version 2.34.401.2) means Europe.

1. I don't know it's still there that's why I used the word "hopefully. " You should be glad that you can still get into your bootloader because without that access your phone is an expensive paper weight. Thanks for the other info. It's exactly what you need to know to find and flash your firmware.

You said rename the file to "0P9CIMG.zip".
As getvar shows, my phone's exact modelid is: 0P9C70***
So what is the principle according to which the file should be renamed? that is, what characters of MID should be mentioned before .zip?

If "fastboot reboot recovery" cannot work, it means that I have lost stock recovery.
1. Am I right?
2. If it is not there, is it still possible to flash the rom? Or I must first flash the stock recovery?
3. Is possible lacking of stock recovery what prevents the phone from showing Yes or No page ("Unlocking bootloader?" page)
4. Is it possible just to flask stock recovery for now and leave flashing ROM to some time later?

1. Or it's corrupted but it could still be there.
2. Usually you need to flash back the stock recovery but I've heard of people flashing over their custom recovery with an RUU(rom utility upgrade) and the RUU replaced everything including the stock recovery which is in the file.
3. Not 100% sure on that one. The bootloader is a separate kernel provided with every Android OS so the recovery is separate from it. That one I can't figure out as when you were trying to unlock your bootloader you're firmware was fine at that time I assume. That's the strange part.

[Q] Soft/ Hard Brick? Formatted SD card

Hi guys!
Im quite new here and new to all these Android stuff but here's my problem:
My friend accidentally formatted everything (sd card, cache, system) and erased EVERYTHING including my CWM recovery backups and now when I reboot it only stays on the HTC logo. Now here are my questions:
-is this a soft brick or a hard brick? (I can still go to HBOOT and RECOVERY)
-what can I possibly do? I dont really know how to flash a stock ROM and stuff like RUU or Kernel etc.
Please help me, Im new to Android and Im actually having fun using it with my new phone. By helping me, you are also helping my friend not being killed by me if my phone gets restored.
Thank you very much!

i think mass storage is not working from recovery currently so flash RUU...
It just a soft brick. You can use a custom ROM, put the rom.zip on your memory card and flash it. HTC One V has a memory card slot for you to put in your sdcard, so not a big problem.
Custom ROM:
1- put the ROMxx.zip on your sdcard (use a card reader).
2- boot to recovery
3- tap on install from sdcard
4- tap on choose zip from sdcard
5. tap on the ROMxx.zip and install.
6. Once complete, reboot.
If you want a stock ROM then you need to flash RUU.
1. put the stock recovery.img in fastboot folder
2. connect your phone in fastboot mode
3. open cmd prompt, point to fastboot folder
4. type fastboot flash recovery stock recovery.img
5. type fastboot oem lock
6. double click your RUU and follow instructions.
Make sure you have the right RUU for your phone.

You shouldn't relock first, you need to place the stock recovery first then relock. But I guess it is ok as you may be on stock ROM.
Anyway, which area are you ? Asia ? Europe? where ?
Check in bootloader - what is the radio version ?
These info may help to find the right RUU for you
p.s: stock recovery.img is refering to the recovery_signed.img or recovery.img depends on the right name. Say it is recovery_signed.img then it should be "fastboot flash recovery recovery_signed.img"

*I copied the recovery.img file to the fastboot folder in my CPU. And yes the recovery.img is the name of my stock recovery.*
You should be more specific, which area in Asia.
If you're in Malaysia or Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, grab the RUU here:
http://www.fileswap.com/dl/NjefCFzT...831.15.00.23_m_release_252880_signed.exe.html
What was your ROM before the soft brick ? If it is stock and now you are on "relocked" status, connect your phone in bootloader (fastboot usb), double click the RUU.exe and follow the displayed instructions.

[Q] Accidentally uninstalled OS and Relocked Bootloader, help?

So as the title says, while attempting to restore my phone back to stock i relocked my bootloader and deleted my OS. My phone is currently S-OFF and has TWRP installed. I have attempted almost everything trying to unlock my bootloader again. When i use my "Unlock_code.bin" it says successful but nothing happens my HBOOT still says that it is relocked. I'm losing my mind trying to figure this out. Can anyone please help me?
Do you know/have your device firmware no. ?
Grab the firmware and flash that to get the stock recovery installed then you can use your unlock_code.bin to unlock bootloader.
Or
Get a pre-rooted ROM.zip and put it in your external_sd and install that.
After all set up, you can unlock bootloader with this guide : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2708571
Or
Since you're trying to get back to stock, grab the nandroid backup if there is one from : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376
then use the external_sd card way to put back stock recovery on your device.
Basic thing is there are many ways to fix your problem ... just pick one of those

Do you happen to know where i can find firmware for my M8 i can't seem to find it.
Did you back up before flashing if so just restore to a point where the boot loader was unlocked.
I'll begin searching for the ROM for your m8?
I need more info first though what's your carrier, what's your manufacturer, and model of phone and the version.
Also need to know current version of android or the os your using

Remove your PIC or edit it not to show the Serial No. and IMEI no.
You can grab the OTA_M8_UL_K44_SENSE60_SECURITY_Rogers_WWE_1.55.631 .4-1.12.631.17_R1_release_366548ar2zyirbo1z4eqie.zip
from here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2694297
then open the OTA.zip with 7-zip and extract out the firmware.zip from it; that's your firmware
OR
Since your device is S-Off ... you can restore and update to the latest one without going back to stock and do OTA.
Just follow what I have here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55398223&postcount=7

You sir are my savior! I followed those instructions to the letter and my phone is now back to working condition! I can't thank you enough. :victory::good:

stock platform.xml

i modified my platform.xml to enable w/r access for the sdcard a few months back.
there was a copy of the original, er, 'somewhere' but i cant find it now.
i have removed the line added i in before but the 4.4.4 ota update is failing because of platform.xml.
anyone have a stock unmodified platform.xml they could upload here or pm?
my M8 is a dual sim version if that makes any difference.
thanks.

Hi,
not exactly. but i am on 4.4.4
i was toying with the idea of winding back to stock using nandroid, rooting and copying out platform.xml, then having another go at OTA...
but, i thought i might as well give MaximusHD 4.4.4 for dual sim a go as i was going to wipe anyway.
i flashed TWRP latest 2.8.1 and updated firmware (link is on Maximus page) and then ROM.
so thats where i am now and happy with the rom.
100% stable, no issues noticed at all and aroma removed some bloat for me as i installed.
no need to go back now.
i will wait for lollipop from HTC and all those custom roms for M8 dual sim to try out (er, joke)

Thanks. As I am rooted, with TWRP, but S-ON, I think I can't flash the new firmware. Or am I wrong on that?
I have nandroid backup from my original stock, so could go back to that and re-lock and then do the OTA, but it's a long slow way of getting to 4.4.4!
An alternative would be Cyanogenmod - but although CM11 supports multi-sim phones I can find nothing clear about whether the official builds support the M8 dual-sim.
Finding the M8 ROM situation frustrating after messing around endlessly with custom ROMs on Acer dual sim phone . . . .

you can but you have to re-lock the boot loader which will wipe your phone.
i used these instructions (I am S-OFF already) and firmware from link on Maximus site:
-------------------------------------------------------
How to flash firmware
### If you are S-ON ---> Re-lock your bootloader (this will most probably wipe content of your device)
If you are S-OFF ---> no need to re-lock the bootloader.
Copy downloaded .zip to fastboot.exe location
Re-name .zip file to firmware.zip
Open command prompt
Boot your device in fastboot mode (vol DOWN + power ===> fastboot)
Connect device to the PC
In command prompt cd to fastboot.exe location
Make sure you have correct modeid and cidnum (type: fastboot getvar all)
### Type: fastboot oem lock (if your device is not relocked yet or in case it's S-ON)
Type: fastboot oem rebootRUU and wait for device to reboot
Type: fastboot flash zip firmware.zip and wait for process to complete
Flash firmware.zip again just to make sure.
Type: fastboot reboot-bootloader
-------------------------------------------------------
what i am sure of is that without the new firmware you will not have wifi
i thought i flashed the firmware first but didnt do it twice and it didnt stick. after the rom was installed i had no wifi but guessed that was the problem and re flashed the firmware. then it was ok.
as for cyanogenmod, unless it states it is for M8 Dual SIM then i wouldnt bother unless youve got time to experiment and hope for updates.
i know there are many arguments as to why you dont really need S-OFF for most normal operations but it a real fail-safe when things get messed up (my 2c)
just find the $25 for sunshine, its worth it.

Go back to stock, and take the OTAs. Then re-root and enjoy your new firmware.

Incorrect. This is the method that you use if you are not S-Off.
If you were S-Off, you would just update firmware manually, with no need to go back to stock.

I would suggest asking if anyone has a link to one in that thread.
I'm on Telus too, but I am running WWE firmware. I ALWAYS have the new firmware before Telus. Just sayin.
S-Off is a good thing to have. I know it seems like $25 is a lot to pay to get it, but if you think of all the hassle it saves trying to update firmware, and the other freedom it gives you (I'm using the Sprint Harman/Kardon version's audio files and ADSP) it is very reasonably priced.

Use 3.34.661.4 backup for 4.4.4 but wifi will not work on your device yet because you have hboot 3.18.0000
Find the 2.23.661.2 -> 3.34.661.4 - thanks @shaboobla on this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376
Extract out firmware.zip from that OTA zip (with 7-zip)
then you can flash this firmware in RUU mode (but you need to relock bootloader because your device is S-On)
Later .. you can check software update and accept OTA to 4.20.661.2

You can do that but not really needed because the signed firmware.zip will restore stock recovery.

Sorry for reviving such an old thread, but I'm trying to get my htc one m8 up and running again. It was functioning on lineage os but wasn't very stable, couldn't find any other roms that would successfully flash on it, I decided to try and go back to stock after a few beers one night night, now the phone has been sitting in a drawer with no os or recovery on it. There doesn't seem to be any still functioning links to any Canadian RUU's that I can use. I'm not s-off, bootloader is "relocked". I'd like to go back to stock marshmallow because I only use this thing to play music and as a tv remote. I'm hoping someone might have an old RUU lying around.
I guess if not my best option is just to unlock the bootloader again and try flashing the same lineage os again. Since I relocked does that mean I have to go through the htc website to get the unlock token again like I did ages ago? They probably don't even have this phone on there anymore. Hopefully I didn't actually turn this thing into a brick.
Please see my comments in red font below:

Photo link is coming up with 404 error for me. Better to do fastboot getvar all, then post the results (cut and paste from command prompt), so we can see all the info on the phone (delete IMEI and serial number before posting).

If you can be more specific about which ROMs you tried (plus info about your device from getvar as noted above), then we might be able to advise why they did not flash. Did you get error messages, and if so, what exactly were they?
I decided to try and go back to stock after a few beers one night night, now the phone has been sitting in a drawer with no os or recovery on it.
What exactly did you do (step by step, with any relevant file names, etc. - more detail is better).
I presume you intentionally relocked the bootloader in attempt to run some RUU. But would like clarification on this (and where that happened in the sequence of events)

Far as I know, Canadian versions don't have RUU.

One option (maybe the best one) is to restore a stock TWRP back from the collection: https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/tutorial-how-to-stock-stock-twrp-t3086860
You will need to unlock the bootloader to do this. You can either reuse the unlock bin code you used originally (if you still have it). Otherwise, you should be able to request a new bin code from HTCDev.com. Far as I know, that still works for this phone.

RUU Failed, OPJAIMG not recognized

Hi guys i'll explaine what happened:
1. I was on nougat rom rooted trying to get back to stock.
2. I run an old lollipop ruu.exe from my computer but it reboots the phone to bootloader mode without going on.
3. I manually reboot to bootloader to see it if does move on but nothing.
4. I disconnect the phone.
Now there's no OS and recovery and flashing TWRP succeeds but when I try to reboot to recovery it say that's not possible.
I tried to flash via sdcard the OPJAIMG but it seems like it doesn't see it (screenshot in attachements).
I can access download mode
I'm S-OFF on Nougat firmware.. what can i do?
EDIT: I tried to live-boot TWRP but it stays forever on booting in cmd and flashing in phone
@Flippy498 maybe you have an idea? You have so much knowledge on this!
I haven't seen a 4.x RUU for the SKU 401, yet. You therefore would need to flash one of Sneakyghost's 3.x firmware packs before you're able to use a 3.x RUU, again. The encryption key changed between firmware 3.x and 4.x. Therefore you can't use 4.x RUUs on firmware 1.x to 3.x and vice versa.
In contrast to the flashing command the command for booting TWRP via fastboot needs to be used while the phone is booted to the bootloader instead of the download mode. However, since I haven't seen a publicly available TWRP backup for the latest 401 firmware, yet, TWRP won't help you much in your situation. (Or do you have your own backup?)
That means on the other hand that you currently need to downgrade to 3.35.401.12 and to re-install the OTAs for 3.35.401.32 and 4.14.401.7 since the latest RUU is for version 3.35.401.12.
Edit: Oh, and the only RUU.exe for SKU 401 that I know is for that 1.x firmware wird the 17 at the end. You shouldn't use that one. The corresponding OTA only got distributed for one single CID (I forgot which one it was). That means that you won't receive OTAs if you aren't using that specific CID on your phone. That means you would need to flash another RUU afterwards for getting away from that firmware version. And instead of flashing two RUUs you could save some time and directly flash the second one.

That's actually not needed. The RUU will flash the stock recovery by its own. You only need a working download mode.

Tried to live-boot TWRP from bootloader since I have my own backup but it fails with the following message:

About 0PJAIMG it is named correctly in SD it's just me that made a mistake writing here.
So last chance for me is to head to Sneakyghost's thread and flash the 3.35.401.32 fullstock firmware then head to your google sheet and pick the 3.35.401.12 RUU and flash it right?

Thanks for your support! Anyway i'm going to do the whole thing tomorrow.. I was reading the instructions on Sneakyghost's thread and he recommend to use his tool because it contains the htc_fastboot that works better than google's one but I don't see any option to lunch the flash zip firmware command from the tool so I decided to get the htc_fastboot.exe file and move it inside another folder (a new one) in wich i'll put both firmware and rom zip to flash. I'm saying this because i'm not 100% sure this is correct so just to clear all doubts..
Once again @Flippy498 you saved me and I say thank you a million times I promise i'll take a break at trying to destroy my m9 so you'll definitely not hear me / see me here anymore hehe
