So I have an Optimus G LS970, added a couple apps, but other than that it's pretty basic. I'm wanting to root this device and eventually add a custom rom on it perhaps, but I've very new to this and don't want to accidentally brick my device.
1) I've been looking for stable linux rooting methods, the only one I've found that looks promising is here, but it's 2 years old. Does anyone know anything about it's stability for android 4.1.2, kernel 3.4.0?
2) In order to transfer files (music, pictures, pdfs/ebooks) to/from my device it needs to be mounted, but I haven't been able to mount it for this (or any other) purpose at all. It shows up as connected (command "lsusb" shows "Bus 002 Device 028: ID 1004:631d LG Electronics, Inc.") but it won't mount. Will this be possible once rooted, or is there some other cause to this?
3) Once rooted, I want to get rid of some of the Preinstalled apps but I'm not sure which will lead to instability and which would be fine to remove, does anyone know where I can check this, or would I just need to list all the apps I don't want on my phone and have you all tell me on an app-by-app basis which is safe to remove?
4) Lastly, when it comes to using alternative app markets, I haven't had much luck. I was trying to test using alt stores with f-droid and nothing showed in the lists, so I don't know if that's a thing with f-droid or my device. Is there anything you need to do to use alt app stores aside from enabling it in the system settings, and installing the app store's .. app?
Thanks in advance!

All of your questions are answered here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050582
And the FAQ.
1. See above
2. Install the LG drivers, link is in that OP, then tick MPT. That should transfer your files. If not, you may need to uninstall, then reinstall them.
3. DO NOT remove any apps unless you unlock! Info is in that link also.
4. I have no idea on that one.

1) *EDIT* [Doesn't say anything about linux rooting, how am I supposed to install a windows drive on a linux system?] I overlooked the linux mention. Thanks! Can't find something. How/where do I find adb?
2) Ignore, see 1) [Again, how am I supposed to install the Windows driver in linux?]
3) Thanks for that. I didn't know the importance of unlocking the bootloader.

Sorry bout that. Linux drivers are native, so they're anyway installed.
You use either fiddy629 root for Linux, or Framaroot.

I tried fiddy619's thing here using the universal linux one. It asked me for ADB. Found that debian has "android-tools-adb" so I installed that, now there's this:
Code:
Using: /usr/bin/adb
Waiting for device... Connect your LGOG via USB in Charge Only Mode
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
Device found
Beginning Root Process
Disconnect your phone from USB
Disable USB Debugging
Enable USB Debugging
Press enter to Continue
I can't tell if this is telling me to do these things, or if it's saying it already did them. Any idea?

Nevermind that, I got it working just fine. took o nly a couple seconds and it was done. Now I have "SuperSU" in my apps menu, so I'm guessing it worked.

Awesome, glad to hear it worked! Which if you have SuperSU it should have. I too only use linux(Linux Mint specifically) and while most guides are made for Windows, things are usually easier from the linux terminal because we don't need to download drivers, android uses a modified linux kernel, etc. Welcome to the forums, glad to have you here! All the info you need is here and plenty of people will be glad to help(as engine has already demonstrated). As for the alternative app markets, Ive read plenty and tested a few but really, nothing comes close to the play store. On our phone Banks Gapps is the standard google apps package to install if you are flashing a custom rom. Just make sure you get the correct version of gapps for the version of android your rom is based on.

The only problem I'm now having is getting the phone to connect to my computer so I can transfer music or ebooks or whathaveyou to/from my device. I've gone through the arch wiki for android (even though I'm running debian) and this forum postt but I keep getting an error:

Are you doing this with the phone turned on and booted into the os? It gives you a PTP error first, make sure the phone is in MTP. At the bottom you also have a LIBMTP error tho. I don't have much experience with debian but from what I understand it is extremely stable but the downside is that it can be a bit out of date at times. Ubuntu and all ubuntu derivatives had a major mtp flaw awhile back but it has since been fixed. Im not sure if it has been fixed in debian. Yes ubuntu is based off of debian, but just like linux mint will add things to the ubuntu base, ubuntu will do the same to the debian base. So LIBMTP MAY be out of date, Im not sure. I know that I have no problem seeing my phone from either the terminal or file browser. Check this out and see if it helps any.
If not you may have to follow engine's advice and format the sd.
EDIT: Also this might work, it is for linux mint but adding the repository and installing it should work on debian(I think) since they all use .deb files. Before ubuntu officially supported mtp by default this was the most popular work around.

The first thing you linked to (steneteg.org or somesuch) was another avenue I went down trying to solve this, but alas it resulted with much the same problems. The second link to the linuxmint forums looked very promising, the only problem with it is the ppa has been dropped by webupd8 so it no longer is available (404s).
I have just discovered earlier today that adb push/pull works for getting things onto/off of my device, but I can't use adb to mount the device to allow it to be seen with a filemanager (thunar in this case). So, that's progress I think.
EDIT : I just saw mention somewhere of androidair, have yyou any experience with this app's reliability/security?

You can try searching for other places where go-mptfs is located, other ppas where it still might be. The ubuntu forums also has this as a possible solution. I haven't used androidair but I have moved files over wifi using the sshdroid app and an ssh server on my pc with great success. If you have any experience with ssh that could be a possible solution although it is obviously slower than usb. But ssh in general is a simple and great tool, also pretty secure since you are simply connected to your home wifi - as long as your wifi is secure you should be fine.
On my pc I believe its openssh that I use - plenty of tutorials out there for that - and here is the link to sshdroid in the play store. Hope this helps!
EDIT: I will also be at work until 2p.m. EST so may not be able to reply back until then - don't worry, I will as soon as I get home if you have any other issues.

For Generic HTC devices, such command with root shell may could open the DIAG PORYT
echo 1 > /sys/devices/virtual/android_usb/android0/f_diag/func_en
But Google AOSP HTC devices....................
Someone has already solved this Problem but due to the negative attitude of the USERs of PIXEL,so.....................
Looking for the answer to this as well. It's needed for DFS and QPST (QXDM).
Every phone has some particular way to do this and so far I haven't found it on this phone. The Nexus 6 was super easy and I was hoping this one would be too. (On the Nexus 6 all you had to do was select BP Tools from the boot menu. Then it booted like normal but with the diag port enabled. Other phones you have to write to or create a particular file, or there's a dialer code but the usual tricks aren't working here.)

Oh crud, I just noticed I was replying to a Pixel XL thread rather than a Pixel thread. You'd think they'd be similar.... does your method work on the Pixel XL, though? If you've tried that and say it works I may actually switch, if I can't figure out how to connect this Pixel.
When I try this on the Pixel (sku G2PW4100 running 7.1.1) I just get "Permission denied", even as superuser, even after changing the f_diag folder permissions to allow writes.
You're getting it to work on the G2PW2100, I guess? 7.1.1?

I apologize for not specifying that I don't have a Pixel or Pixel XL yet.
I know the command I posted above works on the HTC m8. I had almost given up on diag mode on that device until I tried that command.
It sounds like you're on the right track, but unfortunately my understanding is fairly limited. Hopefully somebody with more knowledge can chime in.
I've never messed with this, but I'm looking through the history here to see if there's a clue.

Hi,
I am desperately looking for the solution for enabling diag mode of Pixel XL phones. Any update regarding this would be very helpful.
Thanks.
I tried to build a userdebug build from AOSP but I didn't get very far (first attempt at it, and it kept failing after 1-3 hours).
So cancelled that endeavor and installed the latest Lineage from InvisibleK which was built as userdebug.
>adb shell
>su
>setprop sys.usb.config diag,adb
PC tried to install new drivers (as expected since it has a different vendor/product id). Qualcomm HS-USB Diagnostics 903D (COM14) showed up under Ports. Unknown ADB Interface couldn't install drivers, though. All the tools seem to be working fine.
I have to quit for now, but hopefully that's a start for you.
I wanted to build the stock build as userdebug because that's how you get the diag USB modes enabled. They were stripped from the -user builds.
Edit 1: Phone shows up in QPST now.
Edit 2: Phone shows up in QXDM after setting Target port in Communication setting.
Edit 3: I am not sure if I had installed the drivers linked in this thread, already. The driver version I have is 2.1.04
If someone can install a non-T-Mobile SIM and let me know what their NV 65538 is, I'd appreciate it.
Edit: This value did not change with a Cricket Sim in versus a T-Mobile SIM.
Hi everyone, it's been a long time! I used to be into this stuff back when I got my original Fire TV Gen 1 Box and rooted it etc. I still have been rocking it but it's slow and like half rooted ( unlocked but not root). Got a great deal on a FireTv4k stick on amazon for $25
Rumor has it that Black Friday will have this price as well and we can expect a LARGE influx of new firetv users posting. the same questions I had about the state of Rooting, KODI, Custom Launchers etc. This information is by NO MEANS exhaustive, and is just what I gathered in the last few hours of research and getting things up and running.
*Do I need to Jailbreak/Root my new fire tv?*
Honestly, probably not. Jailbreaking, or rooting as. we call in android world is really not AS useful as many think. It allows for much deeper customization however for what most people are looking for ie. KODI/Sideloading APK's a root/jailbreak _IS NOT REQUIRED_. This link will explain how to turn on developer tools and 3rd party apps. and how you can load KODI on to your fire tv without rooting.
https://www.tomsguide.com/us/how-to-install-kodi-fire-tv,news-25115.html
*2. Can I Root My Fire TV*
If you still want to root/jailbreak, for whatever reason. Some devices can and some devices cant be rooted. The firetv4k stick can be rooted. However it's not for the faint of heart and required removing the casing, shorting out some leads on the electrical board and having a linux machine handy. Not really worth it in my opinion.
3. Can I put custom launchers on my fire tv so I don't need to look at all the ads on the amazon home screen.
YES you can! the method that worked for me today ( 11/20/2019) was using Lean Back Launcher Instructions found in the first post here.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/development/app-leanback-launcher-fire-tv-t3750451
BUT on page 18 user @tsynik was kind to update a long dead project for 4k fire tv's at this link https://github.com/tsynik/LeanbackLauncher
the finally piece of the puzzle is to get it so that when you press the HOME button on your remote, it goes to this new , less cluttered launcher. To do that we need LauncherHijack. Also another app that seem's to have not been updated in a while. Thankfully I came across a post on git hub with instructions to get it working https://github.com/BaronKiko/LauncherHijack/issues/52#issuecomment-504738320
I personally ended up not even using Leanback Launcher in the long run. Instead I used the LauncherHijack and set it to KODI.....that way every time I press home I get put back to kodi. I then used the theme AMBER to create a custom menu in kodi that links out to the official NETFLIX/HBO GO,YOUTUBE apps.
I hope this helps a few of the newbies coming in here. Feel free to ask questions and I'll try my best to answer. But be warned im not super technical.
Thanks!
The whole bit about the launchers is outdated for the 4k stick at least. That method now results in a voice overlay on almost all streaming apps. No fix has been found yet.

really? Can you give me an example of an app that does that? I haven't run into this error yet using KODI,Youtube APK, Netflix APK, and HBO GO Apk.

3. Run adb command - adb shell pm grant com.example.settest.settingstest android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS
4. Start the settingstest app, which automatically starts hijackthis.
All works great, except when i open Youtube / Netflix , i get the voice view / narrator telling me whats on the screen !
Please let me know

Can you confirm you have done this on the latest 4K firestick ? The one that has the ADB Shell as "mantis"
When the follow the process:

That's interesting you're the second individual in this thread with this issue.
The firestick 4k was ordered from amazon directly just last week. I assume it's "mantis". I have been using YouTube and have no overlay voice. Just regular app experience.
JUSTINMARMER said:
The whole bit about the launchers is outdated for the 4k stick at least. That method now results in a voice overlay on almost all streaming apps. No fix has been found yet.

Hey man,
after suffering with the voiceview issues for weeks, i've finally managed to fix it !
All, I did was a factory reset of my 4K firestick and the repeated the install steps:
1. Install debugfile (settingstest apk)
2. Install launcherhijack
3. Run adb command - adb shell pm grant com.example.settest.settingstest android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS
4. Start the settingstest app, which automatically starts hijackthis.
and i have no more narrator nonsense !

I'm glad I could help ( What little I did LOL). Hopefully others will find this thread useful who had the same voice over issues as well as new fire TV 4k members coming from the BlackFriday Deals.
One other thing I did, and I'm not sure if it even does anything, is restrict amazon updates at the router level. It's pretty unreliable obviously but I figured it couldn't really hurt to do this.

there were some comments that you should uninstall the old version of LauncherHijack before the using the new one I linked. Maybe try that first before the full factory reset.

Factory reset and using the files you provided in this thread worked. Thanks for your help.
So I stumbled upon a guide from way back of 2016, and was wondering if it's possible to connect an NTFS external HDD to the FireTV 4k stick. The guide in question concerned a Fire TV and used a side-loaded "Paragon NTFS & HFS+" app to mount the hard drive and Kodi to access it.
Has anybody have had experience with that? Could that be possible if a powered USB hub was used?
Update: Although the voice view nonsense is fixed, one problem remains.... The built in cursor for Silk Browser has disappeared. I'm having to use an air mouse or mouse toggle. Did two more factory resets and once the ADB command is entered this problem returns.

Yes, I'm having the same issue with the cursor in Silk – I'm currently looking at the source of LauncherHijack to find out if we can do something about that. Meanwhile you can use Firefox; there the cursor is still working...

Yeah, I know But better than no cursor at all... I just got a wireless mini keyboard with touchpad which helps by providing a "real" mouse cursor in Silk but I'd really like to be able to use the standard remote... will keep this thread updated if I find a solution.
Btw, I've combined the functionality of the settingstest/debug apk into LauncherHijack so let me know if anybody needs this; then only LauncherHijack plus 1 adb command is required... (can I add files here?).
Hey, I recently received my vivo x60 pro plus. I'm trying to setup android auto and can't figure out why it's not working.
So my hope is, someone over here could help.
When I start the android auto app, it asks for several permissions. I've granted them all, but I'm not able to grant "floating windows" I don't know if this the correct translation for it.
It's simply not possible because android auto doesn't appear in that list and I can't activate it. Someone had similar issues or does have a workaround?
I'm on X60 pro plus...... Same issue....
Hi.
I have the same issue on an iqoo 5 since updating to android 11 (it worked before)
Have either of you managed to get android auto to work?
Exactly same issue here! Any progress?
Hi.
A little progress maybe.
I have managed to give permissions and get into the app on my phone using an adb command :
adb shell pm grant com.google.android.projection.gearhead android.permission.SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW
However, there is an issue when connecting to my car.
The phone screen seems to freeze and I must change the foreground app to something other than AA (android auto seems to crash)
The connection doesn't happen and no car is detected in android auto.

Hello. Since you use a x60. Did you realize that photos seems different in the native album comparing to google photos for example (both in the phone)? And in the native album that image seems to loose saturation when you try to edit it? Also, if you upload the pictures to google photos and try to see them in a compute screen, the saturation changes when zooming in the image?

The same thing to me. I was able do acess Android Auto on phone with this adb. However the car does not recognize the android auto on the phone and the phone does not recognize the connection with the car. It seems surprising how one of the most important apps in android does not work and vivo seems to be ignoring or not solving this issue.
Hello, I contacted Vivo China and they told me the following.

Carlifeplus is not even close to the Android Auto. It's a Chinese app meant only for the phone and working only with other Chinese apps in Chinese language.
I've written to the support myself and haven't gotten any useful help either.
I like Vivo phones and I don't have other problems with Origin OS. I'm seriously considering buying X70 pro+ which suppose to hit the market in September. And I recommend Vivo to address AA issue very seriously. Because like many others, I won't buy any phone without AA. I would look somewhere else, the new Honor could be a decent replacement.
Hello, I found this application, I do not know if it could work to accept the permission, as it does not matter if the phone is blocked, I could try.

Update: Not working
Anyone have any joy with this yet. Driving home last night was stress without it
It's very sad and unfair that after the extended support ending in Jan 2023, surface RT users are not even allowed to download or install app from windows store anymore, such enormous company as Microsoft is just too rich and huge to not be evil, so i had to start to look for ways to get offline installers and manually install them. I can sucessfully install them and it shows on the windows store as installed. But the app could not run properly, i get a message saying the app needs to be repaird and it just stuck on repairing in the windows store. but i don't know whether it's because the issue of my system, as it's not the original system and I could not sync my license of the windows store in the app undates. As this is usually the reason that the app could not be updated in windows store. So maybe it could work on the original system? Somebody have a try?
You need to open your actual Microsoft Store.
Find the app that you want, get the link of the app.
go to this site:
https://store.rg-adguard.net
put the link in the box and click the tick
Look for and download the ARM or Neutral version of the app that you want, and it must be .appx or .appxbundle filetype.
You will also need to download other appx of the ARM or neutral as well. From the name you would possibly know they are the dependancies to run the actual app, so you will need to manually install them before install the actual app
I will use installing unpacker app for example. Run the powershell as administrater.
Install the dependencies first
just type in
Add-AppxPackage -Path "C:\Users\user1\Desktop\Microsoft.VCLibs.110.00_11.0.51106.1_arm__8wekyb3d8bbwe.Appx"
after this one is done, do the same for the next one
Microsoft.WinJS.1.0_1.0.9200.20789_neutral__8wekyb3d8bbwe.Appx
Add-AppxPackage -Path "C:\Users\user1\Desktop\Microsoft.VCLibs.110.00_11.0.51106.1_arm__8wekyb3d8bbwe.Appx"
After you get everything ready,
just type in
Add-AppxPackage -Path "C:\Users\user1\Desktop\unpacker.appx"
can get more details here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/appx/add-appxpackage?view=windowsserver2022-ps
and voila
if you get error when installing, just read the details and it's possibly you haven't installed the dependencies, which means you will need to use the same code above to install the dependencies first.
-------------------------------------------------------
update:
Thanks to @dj_tech1 , I am pretty much sure that the evil Microsoft must have messed up the license after ceasing the support.
to be able to run the app, we will have to bypass the app license.
I have entered the test mode and also disble the DEP
BCDEdit /set - Windows drivers
The BCDEdit /set command sets a boot entry option value in the Windows boot configuration data store (BCD) for Windows.
learn.microsoft.com
To be able to do this, the secureboot has to be disabled beforehand
I have also acquired the developer liscense thanks to the help of
@jonnyprogamer at #19
I am not sure whether all the steps above will need to be achieved or not.
Now, we need to remove the signature file of the appx.
First, extract the appx/appxbundle to a working directory, then delete "AppxSignature.p7x".
open a new Powershell window to the working directory, then run the following command:
(I still use unpacker for example)
Add-AppxPackage -Register .\AppxManifest.xml
-Register must point to the path of the AppxManifest.xml
Have a read here: https://titleos.dev/bypassing-microsoft-store-licensing/
And voila!!!!
UPDATE:
with deleting the "AppxSignature.p7x". method, the app stop running after some time. I reinstall it and it can still run for some time.
Anyway, Thanks to @jonnyprogamer @camborita
Go with the method at #29 to test sign the appx and it will not have the issue that I had.
The solution is...Linux.

This is not the solution. After setup the app says that it cannot run because of the error and it has to be repaired. Only few apps have ability to display repair button. After clicking it nothing is getting repair. Also you cannot Update licenses in your Store account settings.
Setup without -Path command causes no "error badge" on apps list.
It worked before January 10'th. Now as above.
Still waiting for working solution...

The appx file is directly from the MS store, so I guess the problem is not really with the file, it might be more possible to do with the app license. if some surface RT still got the synced licences, i guess this might work for them?

No, Windows Updates came from Windows Update. Windows Store updates only MS default apps, preinstalled with system.
First updates to 2016 rollup has to be installed manually.

Ok i tested it on my Windows 8.1 x64 installation and they still gave me a free developer license, and in fact i was able to sideload AccuWeather for Windows 8, and it doesn't show the "X" symbol (error) in the start screen anymore!
The app still won't launch, but i think it's because of missing dependencies.
Here is how to get a developer license:
1) Run PowerShell as Administrator
2) Type Show-WindowsDeveloperLicenseRegistration
3) Sign in with your MS account when asked, and it will give you the license immediately for free
So in theory i successfully installed an Appx (because i don't get the X showing up on the start screen), im gonna try to get the dependencies now, i attached a screenshot.
PS: I got the instructions from here: https://www.howtogeek.com/129535/how-to-sideload-modern-apps-on-windows-8/
I think we need to do some other stuff in order to successfully run the apps, probably the answer is in this document from MS:
