Dear experts,
I wonder why the 5X has no Qi feature, as the Nexus 5 had. Generally, I wonder, why most of the new phones relinquish inductive charging. Can someone tell me why?
Is the feature not demanded by the market / the customers?
Has it any other major drawbacks?
I mean, I know that inductive charging is slower and less efficient than wired charging (though getting more and more efficient), but I love this feature on my N5 and don't ever want a phone without it again. Cases featuring Qi are looking not so good in my opinion.
Can anybody give me the reason, why most of the new phones relinquish inductive charging?
Cheers
"...because Google thinks we are stupid"
I agree with that article. Not that people are stupid but wireless charging, as it currently is, really isn't worth it. The time and convenience you get with it is negated by the longer charging time. Plugging a type-C cable is quick and easy and much faster charging.

Qi charging is worthless MOST of the time. HOWEVER, when it is useful, there is NO EQUIVALENT.
Going to bed? Place phone on pad to charge overnight. Much less hassle and quick charging doesnt matter since there is plenty of time.
Sitting at work? Place phone on pad to keep charged. Easy to place and remove for meeting and quick charging doesnt matter since this is only for keeping it charged.
Car Mount: place phone on Qi enabled car mount = muss less hassle and more safety when you're doing something else.
Useless applications:
- airports (not enough time, slow charging)
- Coffee shops (same reason)

But it's more of a luxury than a necessity cause you have to purchase all those charging pads. And then it can't even charge at regular charging speed. In the car that's pretty useless especially if you use music and/or GPS going. You'll still drain your battery. Is it really that much of a hassle to plug in a cord, let alone, a reversible cord?

it's a luxury much like buying additional USB-C charging cables and adapters is, no different.
Qi charging can charge at 2A nowadays, so it would likely not drain.

Kind of but those cables are cheaper. Also, the first 3 Qi Wireless chargers I see on Amazon can use a 2A wall charger but all output only 1A. Lastly, in the case of the Nexus 5X, even a wired 2.4A car charger can't provide enough power to charge the phone while using GPS and playing music. But I think that's a temperature throttle issue.

Can't really prove this to you with data, but I use AutoMate on my N5X daily with GPS and screen on the whole time, in Texas, and the phone does not lose much charge, if any. Usually stays the same or increases by 2%-3%

Actually the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are probably the closest to your request. They are a wee bit larger than the N5.

Qi wireless car chargers go for $50 or more. Type-C car chargers are cheaper. Unless you know of a Qi Wireless QuickCharge for $15-$20.
Yeah QuickCharge wireless charging is "coming soon". "Coming soon" the key phrase and this was back in June 2015. And when that comes out it'll be more expensive than wired QuickCharge for sure. More than $15-$20 type-C wall chargers out already now.
There's a whole thread about the Nexus 5X not charging or barely charging with the screen on.

EeZeEpEe, I see u are an opponent of Qi. Have you actually ever tried it? When I got my N5, it was the first phone for me supporting Qi. I thought, this is a useless gimmick for nerds. But then I gave it a try. Since then I never ever charged my phone wired again.
I think I will go for the Galaxy S7.

Nope but I'm just saying that it's nice but not cheaper, faster, or that much more convenient. If it's the same price as wired, it's slower. If it's able to match the speeds of wired charging, it's more expensive. And with type-C reversible cables, plugging in isn't much of a hassle.
The GS7 will have type-C and wireless charging anyway.

My personal theory is that since the 6P is metal they couldn't use qi, and therefore couldn't let the budget 5X have a feature not in the premium model. Lack of wireless charging is why I held off on getting the 5X so long. I really hate having USB cables hanging around. Having a pad or two on a desk or night stand is much nicer. Hopefully it comes back in the next Nexus.

I bought a 5x within a minute of it going live on the Play Store. Naive fellow that I am, I was actually hoping against hope that it would have the same magnets in the back that the Nexus 5 has, so I could continue to use my Nexus-branded Qi charger.
I was shocked to find out that Qi was not supported at all. Instead, Google saddled us with a new-and-not-quite-ready-for-prime-time USB standard.
They tell us it's great because you can't plug it in the wrong way. Hmmm - a solution in search of a problem.
Faster charging? Again, this solves a problem I didn't have.
USB-C, for me, is just another proprietary cable. I do not own any other USB-C devices, and don't anticipate getting any in the near term.
USB-C cables: I bought C-to-A and C-to-C cables from Amazon before it was discovered that not all of them are actually compliant with the standard. I bought the wrong kind of cables. I could've gotten two or three more Qi charging pads for what I paid for those (useless) cables.
I know that for many following this thread, fast charging is goodness. I have no need for it, gimme back my Qi.

Can anyone recommend a car charger that is cheap and charges the unit like its on AC power? Some of the cheaper ones I've purchased in the past charged my phone like it was on usb power.
TIA!
Just open up one of your cheap chargers and short the middle two pins of the USB jack. A drop of solder worked on mine. There are only four pins, so it should be easy to follow and find a place on the circuit board to do it.
Once you get it done, plug in the phone and it will show that it's charging on AC, which means it's pulling 1 amp.
Plenty different ones available, but I use this one. There are cheaper ones, but this one is a quality build that charges at 1 full amp! Motorola brand for around $6 including shipping.

Dude, go to wallymart or somewhere and get an AC converter. I bought one with 2 AC outlets and 1 USB for fairly cheap at wallymart. You wont regret it. It charges my laptop, phone, and gf's phone just fine.
Monoprice has a 1a usb charger for $1.33. I was looking at it yesterday but don't have the link handy at the moment. They're also the best place to buy usb cables too.

The best car chargers I've found are the Palm chargers for the Pre. For some reason they seem to work much better than any other car charger that I have used. You just need to make sure you get model number 3453WW, because there is also an older model that looks the same but doesn't provide the full 1A charge.

Damn. I was wondering WHY in the world this phone took SO STINKING LONG to charge. I mean OVER NIGHT and still not quite done sometimes (extended battery)
Gonna stalk me some good chargers
so instead of starting my own thread.. thought id bump this up...
any new chargers out there.. for car... can be either the usb one (as i have the cig lighter to usb plug... )..or cig lighter..
just feeling out there if anything has changed..
we went on a LONG drive.. 376miles.. and using gps and my phone in my infuse dock.. it was charging.. but draining more than charging... by 1/2 way it was below 50%.... so the road i needed to take was super long so just turned phone off for a while...
was using the charger from my wifes incognito so i figured maybe that car charger didnt have enough A to it.. so bought a new charger from walmart.. and it didnt do any better...
thanks guys...
p.s. on my way home from work (1hr drive) im going to plug straight into my phone instead of the infuse dock and run the gps and see if it charges any different...
Even if the car charger says it can put out 2A the phone will only draw 500mah unless the two inner pins are shorted. Samsung does their chargers this way to identify to the phone that its plugged into a wall charger instead of a computer. (computers are only rated for 500mah on the USB port, although some can go higher)
You could open up the charger and short the pins, or if the charger is the kind where you plug your own cord in you can modify the cord itself. I have a "charging only cord" for when the phone needs a fast boost.

Hey, as the only verified genius here I wanted to share a great and cheap way to charge your phone. As i understand it you want the speed and current of AC out of your car's 12 volt dc system. They currently make something that works with ALL phone models. It is called an inverter. You just plug your stock phone charger into it. It will work fine for your phone but it wouldnt be wise to try use this it watch a 42" plasma tv. Here is one for 6 bucks that plugs in your lighter socket.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B003C2YE8M/ref=redir_mdp_mobile
By the way, I can't endorse this product. I hope you get the general idea. As always you get what you pay for. Read the reviews and look for the inverter that you think would work best for you.

I would recommend getting the AC/usb adapter for an iphone or ipad, because they tend to run on a higher voltage (5v) than many cheap AC/usb adapters you can probably find off-brand one pretty cheap all over. If anything just make sure your adapter runs on about 5v. I just recommened iphone ones because there are more accessory manufacturers for i-products and you can generally find a wider selection of what you are looking for regarding this topic. I would check walmart first if money is an issue.

Note that most cheap inverters use a modified sine wave to gain efficiencies over 80%. Most phone chargers will work okay you might get a little buzzing. But you will often run into chargers, power supplies etc that will only operate properly on a pure sine wave inverter.
This is a review of Anker Bolt 3.6A (18W) Dual USB Car Charger: Anker Car Charger
From my own personal experience I use Note 2 every day as GPS to/from work. Everything is usually on (display, bluetooth), plus GPS/Google maps are up, and I take/make phone calls in a middle of all that. What does that mean? Battery is draining really fast, and even with car charger you need at least 2A output to be able to charge at faster rate than discharging with everything on. 2A charger is not hard to find, although question always come up if you can trust their actual rating. If you want to take it to the next level and charge another smart phone, you can probably find a dual charger with 2A and 1A, although reliability and current sharing during simultaneous use of ports might be in question. This new product from Anker took it to the next level where they are offering dual port output with 2.1A and 1.5A outputs and guarantee full current supply from each port at the same time. In terms of reliability, they are offering 18 months warranty which I think is a bold statement of confidence in their product.
3.6A, which is 18W, is a lot of power and to my surprise the charger was actually very small and lightweight. The dimensions of the end with dual ports is only 26 mm x 24 mm, and the whole charger is very lightweight and only 22g. This small size is very convenient for tight spaces like in your arm-rest compartment, and just in general is unobtrusive to use anywhere in the car. I know they advertise it as dual port with 2.1A for Apple (obviously iPad) and 1.5A for smart phones, but I confirmed that our Note 2 charges perfectly from Apple port. As a matter of fact that would be the best port to use for Note 2 fast charging. I took a picture in my car to demonstrate that both of the ports worked charging Note 2.
Overall it's a great little dual usb port car charger from a trusted company with a punch of 3.6A capacity split between 2.1A and 1.5A ports where both can be used simultaneously so you can do a fast charging of two devices at the same time. Plus, you can get it on Amazon for under $12 which is a bargain.

Don't know if I ever get around it. I'm testing my ZeroLemon 9300 mAh so I mostly discharging my battery rather than charging it up. Will take a while before I get to in car charging Beside for me timing charge in the car makes no sense because I use my N2 for GPS and calls all the time, so I'm discharging it at a heavy rate as it charges up. But for sure, it goes up 15%-20% with this charger during my 1hr commute, but only because I use GPS/BT/display fully on at max brightness. This car charger is true 2.1A/1.5A, so the charging time from 2.1A shouldn't be any different than our OEM wall charger.

You should be able to use the Galaxy Charge Current app (available on the play store) to see how much current it's supplying (although this may vary depending on the USB cable you use with it, a reason why I'm purchasing the variant with a built in micro-usb cable and a usb port) although I seem to remember you stating in another thread you had one of the US variants of the Note II and the app may not be compatible with those.

Quick update on this:
Although the Galaxy Charge Current app only reports the charger giving 1.2a, over an approximately 15 minute period with the screen on, music playback, GPS lock and video recording @ 720p with DailyRoads Voyager, the charger was still able to charge my N7100 from 80% to 86%, which isn't bad considering the heavy load it was under.

Ah, thanks for the info. Seems I'm only missing out on 300mA though (one reviewer says the android port on that is rated at 1.5A and I get 1.2A from mine) so I don't think I'll go for that one. this way I know I'm going to get a decent charge no matter what usb cable I use. I've only got one that's actually capable of charging at full speed and having to take it everywhere I go would be annoying, the fixed charger on this is perfect for me.
Only posted here to help others looking for a decent car charger, as you did. Every other thread I see on the topic seems to recommend usb chargers such as yours but never recommend cables capable of utilising them to their full potential.
Anyway, keep up the great reviews
Most of them make me want to spend money I know I shouldn't on things I don't necessarily need

Absolutely! I highly recommend to use Monoprice usb 28AWG/24AWG cables with Ferrite choker and gold-plated connectors. You need thicker cables to handle 2A current. Do not use thin computer cables designed for 500mA current.

I'd go with what Vectron suggested.
In the UK the only cable I've found that does is an old BlackBerry usb cable my cousin had. Swapped it for a spare cable I had that only did 1A because her phone only charges at 1A anyway.

Absolutely, it's low voltage drop cable design. Plus it never failed me in the car either if it's 100deg C or down to single digits.
Just ordered one to see if it'll trigger my iBolt Dock's USB charging/audio feature. Hopefully it does...if it doesn't, well least I can charge two phones in the car at once now.
Ordered these cables from monoprice, used with my original charger and couldn't get my ZL9300 charged over 72%. Kept it on charger for over 12 hours

Can't be the cable. It's just a thick wire. If it would have been defective, you wouldn't be able to even charge it up to 72%, although you can never tell for sure. So you have used original Samsung 2A wall charger with it's original cable from the same AC wall outlet to charge up your Note 2 with Zerolemon before to 100% without any problem? I just want to baseline your working setup so you can troubleshoot from there. If it was working before in exactly the same setup and you only replaced the cable, can you go back to the original cable and see if it will charge it to 100% without a problem? If not, then it's something wrong with a cable. Make sure nothing funny is going on with your AC wall outlet plug. I discovered that in my house I have a few that not allowing me to do fast charging due to some electric wiring limitation. Also, make sure everything is connected all the way in. Depending on the case you are using, some of these micro-usb connectors are a bit too thick to go all the way in, and although it looks like you are charging - because connector is not mated all the way in, you have a bad contact and limiting charging current. I actually BET you that's exactly what is going on. I have so many usb-to-micro-usb cables around, can't keep track of it. But I remember at my work I had to slice a piece of micro-usb connector to make it thinner to work with my Zerolemon TPU, and I believe that was monoprice cable. Definitely check it out, cause that could be a problem in your case.
Everything was the same, same 2A charger, same outlet, same phone with ZL battery . Just replaced my Samy cable with 6ft one from monoprice. Will try again tomorrow with oem cable, will see how it goes

Trim micro usb connector. Gotta be it.
It seems to fit pretty tight, but I will definitely try it.
Ha! The Anker direct store in ebay is selling this for $55!! What is it made of gold now? LOL.
Anyone know of any? I'd like to be able to use the sat nav with at least the same amount of battery after rather than considerably less even when plugged in

This is the one I use in my car. Make sure you have a good USB cable of course. Anker 18W Dual Port Car Charger @ $7.99.
I needed it for the same thing you do. I use navigation a lot, and stream music as well. It charges at the same rate as the stock Nexus 5 wall adapter/cable. It is still able to slowly charge the phone while using navigation/streaming.
Here is the newer updated 24W car charger for $12.99. It no longer has a dedicated Apple/Android port, but has power management/device detection. So just plug it in to either port and it should quick charge.

I use the Owl QI Charger. I have a slightly older model, but the company is awesome. The first version the phone would still drain. Without me even saying a word, the company contacted me and sent me a new faceplate so the phone is closer the the QI unit and now the phone charges while using google maps and playing podcasts over bluetooth.
Next the phone was doing ghost touching. The company sent me out a brand new charger at no charge and the problem was resolved.
I admit the QI charges slower than pluging in directly, but the phone does indeed charge and is incredibly convenient not having to manually attach a cable.
Here is their site. .Ships form Korea.

Go on ebay and search for "scosche revolt c2" I found this after looking for so many different chargers and this finally matched what a wanted, 2.1amp from each port and slim profile.
It's $9.99 from ebay and usually sells for like $20+ at besbuy/amazon
What about a decent cable that can handle a good 1.5 amps too?

The included micro-usb is moderately large and while it would fit in the Google "bumper" case, it would flex it quite a bit too. So if you already have problems with some cables fitting your case, that one might not be for you.
*speaking from experience with their old model, not sure about the PowerIQ version, but it looks similar.

Got one too, along with the 40w wall charger in the past. Power IQ is interesting. It seems to max out at 1000ma on the Nexus 5 even though the chargers are capable of more.

The only problem with qi charging and sat nav together is mega heat build up. Which I don't want
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I have some short duration data to share... with music (on device) playing and gps active (and screen on the entire time), my battery monitor recorded a drain of about -800mA. When I plugged it in to the Anker it went positive, but jumped around quite a bit: 409, 701, 611, 344, 451, 292 mA. So that got it from 77% charge to 82% in about 10 minutes. My battery temp monitor only comes on at 40^ C and it did not, so heat was not an issue.

I was interested in getting this since I needed a really good and fast car charger but the anker 24w is more than double in price on amazon.ca. I don't think I want to drop 30 bones on a car charger.
Are there any other reliable car charger brands?

Yeah I had the same problem with the 18w at the time. I don't know why they price gouge so badly... I mean really, almost every major city in Canada is basically near the border with the US, doubling the price is ridiculous.
Luckily there was a 30% coupon I could apply at the time, so the price was only a few dollars more, but still...

I can't count the number of times I have been gouged by amazon.ca. The prices are always doubled or tripled. I usually just check amazon.com first if I ever want to buy anything. I'll check local places and Canada Computers (they usually great prices) see if they have anything similar to the anker.

Hi Ben, are you using the charger's built in USB cable to get that charging rate or a different (OEM?) one?
Thanks
What r u guys using? I saw an article in my Google feed that listed this one, but I see some negative reviews from people using pixel 2's. It'd also be nice to get something that came with a cable, but I wouldn't say that it NOT coming with a cable is a deal breaker. Need to get one of these ordered right away, so please help.

I use this one:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07234DKQ5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_bE2pBbY3VNZHN
It's no longer on sale but other copied versions are available for $15. I only got it because AUKEY and Anker didn't have a Power Delivery one at the time the Pixel 2 XL came out. I know the phone charge rate is limited but I wanted to "future proof" and get a type-C charger that could do higher. I also paired with with an Aukey type-C to type-C cable.
The Aukey charger you linked should be fine. I prefer these charger without an attached cable because those can possibly go bad and you can't change the cable.

Great. Thanks for the alternative. I ended up just purchasing the one I asked about in the OP. If it performs poorly I'll ask for a refund from the seller and go with the one youve listed. I hope my purchase works and works well right out of the box, but I have yet to be impressed with a car charger for any phone. I'm a hopeful skeptic.
Yeah Aukey is legit and you should be fine. Keep in mind that it'll charge fastest with the screen off of course. However, I still get a good charge while using Android Auto and having navigation and music playing. It's definitely not the 0% change (sometimes still loss battery) that I had with the Nexus 5X with the screen on.

The choetech suggested as the alternative does have 100% 5 star reviews and a lot of pixel 2 xl users from what I can see. I think I should have probably went with that one, but the aukey is going to be here Monday. I'll try it and report here what I find. I noticed in the descriptions that the choetech delivers 3a. The aukey is only 2.4, but in a review someone noted that their pixel 2 xl says "charging rapidly" when plugged into the aukey's usb-c. I guess time will tell.
As someone mentioned, yes, there Verizon ones are ALWAYA solid, but they're usually.pretty expensive last I checked. I almost just went with that option, but I hate going in there and giving them my money. I try to avoid it.
Read the details again. The 2.4a is for regular USB and not USB-C Power Delivery. Both Aukey and Choetech do PD (Aukey is up to 24w and Choetech is only 18w) which includes the 9v/2a the Pixel 2 XL stock charger does. In the end that doesn't matter much because the phone is capped off below that. Also, the Aukey would be more "future proof" for devices to come if phones do go up to 24w.

awsome, thank you very much
I have the aukey and have been using it for about a week now with the stock little Google cord that came with the phone. I use a longer 10' Google cord (I've tried using the cheapo ebay cords and they've never lasted. That's why I'm here for the car charger cause they're the same) for the charging block in the house. That way I can still look at my phone in bed at night to set my alarm, etc. It still manages to creep there charger up while using the phone with the screen on. With the screen off I think it's about as fast as the stock wall charger. I'm not about to drain the phone and do a timed test or something though, so you'll just have to take my word for it.
I'm definitely satisfied so far. I'm glad I didn't do what I usually do and buy some eBay cheapo. Let's see if it stands the test of time though.
Just another update: it's still going very strong and functioning very well.

I've given up on car chargers. I really started traveling so much for business that I needed something that would charge my laptop too so I just started looking for a full wall outlet thinking I can just use whatever. I gave up on looking for chargers with PD and just bought a new samsung laptop type c-charger thinking it has to have enough torque and it does.
I got a cheap power line charger with two wall outputs and 2 5volt 2.4 amp USB for the goons in my family that use iPhones.
But now any wall charger I use for a Fast Charge I can just use in my car.
Just wondering what wireless chargers everyone is using.
Seeing that the Pixel Stand is so expensive. I've opted to use my Samsung Fast Wireless charging stand as my main charger, but noticed that my old Nokia DT-900 charger (back from my Nexus 5) still manages to show "charging rapidly" on my Pixel 3, so I have it as an extra charger for my living room.
So what chargers are you guys using or what do you recommend?

I couldn't get it to work. It looks like it's charging, makes all the little noises and displays, but the charge doesn't go up. I'll try it again I guess. I have so many USB c cords and chargers now that it's really never a problem. My laptop also has a usb c port for fast charge. I did notice the old Nexus charger got pretty warm so it kinda threw me off the wireless idea. Maybe on black Friday the Google one will go half off and I'll get it then.

Pixel 3 capability of 18W - what does it mean for 10W or 39W Qi chargers
Following up on a research.
I see lots of wireless Qi chargers, with advertised high wattage numbers. Also Pixel 3's battery array is advertised to support 18W speed charging.
Does it mean:
1. that 10W chargers are slower than what pixel 3 can handle ?
2. that 30W+ chargers are a waste of money?
3. should I look for exactly 18W chargers?
Also my 4 years old Duracell Powermat does not charge the pixel 3, I can't see why.
Last bit - if you use a charger that works, could you please link it from amazon/somewhere else please?
Thanks,
JD

The pixel supports 18w charging over USB.
The wireless charging maxes out at 10w.
Any charger over those power levels will be throttled back to meet the phone's requirements. You will not charge faster than the phone is capable of.

Correct, ditch the plate of you want to use wireless charging.
Android Police is reporting that Google limits Pixel 3 wireless charging rate to standard 5W for third-party chargers. So even with a fast charger, Google will limit you to 5w, and yet you will still see "charging rapidly" on any wireless charher.

Wow. That is some shady s**t right there. I already have a couple of fast wireless chargers from my Samsung device and recently bought one for my car on Amazon. Glad I saw this before bashing it in my reviews.
