Linux Mint not showing the Pixel C for MTP transfer - Pixel C Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I connect the Pixel C for PTP it shows up in Nemo and I can transfer photos. USB debugging is selected on the tablet. adb and fastboot are installed in Linux. Switching to MTP removes the tablet from Nemo and I won't be able to transfer media.
An old Galaxy Note 10.1 and the One+one connect to my Linux PC without problems. Does anyone here has a clue as to what might be causing this problem.
I got some help on the Google forum but until now I had no luck in solving this problem.
My PC is running Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa 64-bit with the latest 3.19.0-49 kernel.
Pixel C build# MXB48T with feb 1st security patch.

not much help I'm afraid but I can at least report a similar issue.
I have had exactly he same problem running with Ubuntu 14.04 x64.
I have a Nexus 10 which connects quite happily using MTP.
I can quite happily use MTP between the Pixel and Windows 7x64.
I have worked round the issue by using FTP transfers - as I think there must be some incompatibility between the Linux MTP and the Pixel C!

Hi
I have Mint 17.3 Cinnamon 3.19.0-32 kernel
My Pixel C is also on MXB48T
I just plugged the tablet in, it defaulted to PTP. Switched to MTP and Nemo shows Pixel C as a device and I can browse internal content.
Looking at my installed packages, I have libmtp etc. It looks like they got installed when I installed VLC
Maybe try installing the tools package ? https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/applications/precise/mtp-tools/

MTP has always been a pain in the a$$ in Linux, mostly because it's a Microsoft technology, MTP on Linux has always been hit or miss with me on Linux, after hours of installing different packages or getting it to finally show up but transfers slowing to a crawl, I would just boot back into Windows and have it done in a few seconds. Take a look at dmesg (dmesg|tail in the terminal) after you plug in your Pixel and switch it to MTP to see if there's any issues. I have Arch Linux on my desktop, but I'm in Windows now so I'll give it a try later and report back if I have any odd issues. As acrickie stated above, bypassing MTP in favor of some other protocol is your best bet, I usually use ES File Explorer since you can enable FTP in it and transfer things over wifi or simply connect to your box via SFTP/SMB from within ES and go about your business.

Windows 8.1 Fastboot

I'm on a fresh install of Windows 8.1
Here's what I did.
1. Installed HTC Sync Manager
2. Installed Minimal ADB and Fastboot
3. ADB works fine, boot into bootloader.
4. Windows shows Unknown USB Device (Device Failed Enumeration) in Device Manager
Running fastboot devices returns nothing
I can connect my phone to view files, I can ADB on my phone, the only thing I cannot do is fastboot. Why is this happening and how can I fix it?

I just experienced the exact same issue following the same steps on my laptop also running 8.1
Fastboot doesn't work w 8.1. No workaround. You need another OS.

Uh no. I have it working perfectly fine on my Surface Pro. It has both USB 3.0 and Windows 8.1. I'm not sure exactly how I got it to work but its possible.

From all of my research, you're the first person I've heard of having it working. Any specific drivers used? I'm very curious (currently, I have to use a backup machine to push TWRP updates to my VZW One)
Same thing here. 8.1 broke fastboot. Is this a Microsoft problem specifically because if it is I seriously doubt they will be in a hurry to patch it.

I have found out something based on the VMware experience. Can somebody try it out and report back???
I feel that the fastboot problem in windows 8.1 is related to the USB port.
For those people that having problem, are you guys using USB 2.0??? If yes do you have USB 3.0 port in your computer??? The real problem maybe is that fastboot only works with USB 3.0 but not USB 2.0 in windows 8.1...
I tried both USB types, and half a dozen drivers and workarounds, and nothing.
I don't believe the dude above got it working. He is probably thinking Win 8, not 8.1. I have it working on 8.
Flash Image GUI will probably do everything you need to do in fastboot without the need for a computer. I just threw 8.1 on one of my extra PC's, I'll see if I can get the drivers going. I feel like this was answered in another thread though, I think it is in the rumrunner thread...
Just another reason why 8 is bad

i just used http://www.droid-now.com/2013/10/fix-working-fastboot-drivers-windows-8-1-x64/ and fastboot works on a 3.0 port on 8.1
I've just had this problem last week, and now got a solution...
Hi guys,
For anyone interested, due to something DreamerTKM said - I tried both USB 2 & USB 3 sockets on my Dell L701X laptop and both failed:
ERROR: Unknown USB Device (Device Failed Enumeration)
I did a clean install of Win 8.1 Pro and it still failed...
Anyway, I was using Windows 8.1 Pro default drivers for my system when this issue came up last week - default as in Microsoft's own out of the box drivers (drivers on the install DVD and Windows Updates) for my CPU chipset, USB chipset, etc... - my entire system (except for my nVidia graphic card!)
My laptop is now a few years old and my official "Dell" CPU chipset drivers are not compatible with Win 8.1, so I need to rely on Microsoft for these, but my USB 3 originally had Dell supplied "Renesas USB 3" drivers which I hadn't installed or even thought about installing as my USB 3 socket worked - and worked well...
...anyway, after installing the original Renesas USB 3 drivers the fastboot commands work once plugged into a USB 3 socket! USB 2 still wouldn't work though, but now my Win 8.1 laptop can do fastboot commands through a USB 3 socket.
I understand not everyone will have a Dell L701X laptop but the moral here is before blaming Microsoft and their Windows 8.1 O/S (which is truly awesome), try installing the correct drivers first!
DreamerTKM - thank you for putting me on the correct path with this!
Hopefully this post may help some of you!
solution
guyz if u r working on win8.1 just plug it in ur usb 3.0 then it will wrk...if u put in usb 2.0 it wont!
No changes. I have read a few topics that it barely works with Win 8.1, so I will have to try it somewhere esle with Windows 7, then I'll be coming back to tell what's up.

Full fastboot and ADB support is available in windows 8.
Watch the first video: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2703585
I have been using fastboot and adb with no problems on Windows 8.1 since January. But the issue is much more than simply using a different USB port. Here is the tutorial I used. http://www.droid-now.com/2013/10/fix-working-fastboot-drivers-windows-8-1-x64/ Certain security features of 8.1 need to be bypassed to install the modified drivers. Also see this guide: http://forums.team-nocturnal.com/index.php/topic/1362-how-to-adb-fastboot-in-windows-xp-7-81/ I used this just for ADB, but it looks like he's updated his guide for fastboot as well. Hope this information helps.

[Q] ADB/Fastboot only working on Mac OSX

Let me start off with the basics...
Nexus 7 (2013) - Stock Rooted 5.0.2
Variant: flo 16G
HW Version: rev_e
Bootloader Version: FLO-04.04
Tried MTP on/off - Doesn't work
Tried USB Dev on/off - Doesn't work
Tried on Windows 7/8.1 - Doesn't work
Tried on Ubuntu 14.04/14.10/Linux Mint 17/17.1 - Doesn't work
EVERYTHING WORKS on Mac OSX Maveric and Yosemite!!!
MTP and ADB and Fastboot do not work at all. In linux, lsusb shows nothing. In Windows, Device manager shows no changes (also, never plugged it in before this and followed Wug's toolkit howto exactly).
When I plug the device into my girlfriend's MacBook Pro (10.10 Yosemite as well as when she was on Maverics) everything works. On her Mac, ADB works, Fastboot works, and MTP (using the android transfer tool) works flawlessly. This is using the same exact USB cable that I used on all other systems. I tried this on my Linux laptop and a Windows desktop. Triend all USB ports. It seems my tablet will only work with a Mac.
Any ideas??
Does the laptop or desktop recognize the tablet? Is the Android SDK up to date?
I don't use the full SDK. I use android-tools-adb and android-tools-fastboot which is a cross platform toolset. This works for 2 of my phones, my ouya, and her phone so I know its just the tablet. The 3 phones and the ouya work on the windows desktop and laptop but not my tablet. As soon as I plug the tablet into her Mac, it is detected right away. I really wish I can solve this... I hate taking her MacBook from her every time I want to tinker with things.

[Q] MTP doesn't work on Linux (CM12)

Hello,
when I connect my Z1C (official CM12 build from 2015-04-15, or any other version really) to my PC (Xubuntu 14.04, Kernel 3.16), I can't access the storage using MTP. For some reason MTP never worked for me on this phone on Linux, even when I had CM11 back in the day. In Windows 7, it works, but starting Windows every time I need something from my phone is not an option for me.
When I connect the phone, I do get the screen where I can choose the USB mode as MTP, PTP or charge only -- of course I selected MTP. Toggling this option a few times also doesn't help.
For other devices (mondrianwifi) with CM12, MTP works just fine on the very same PC in Linux (without any further changes to the device or the PC).
This is the reason I ask this question here, in case you were wondering.
Factory resetting the phone, re-installing CM12 after formatting /system or trying different USB ports (2.0 and 3.0) doesn't help, either.
Any ideas, please? How do I debug this?
Best wishes
Try live USB with xubuntu 15.04. I cannot access my z1 compact from Ubuntu 14.04, but can easily access internal disk and SD card from Ubuntu 15.04 (still beta though). I think that there are no proper drivers in previous linux kernels. Maybe I'm wrong as I tested it just with kernels 3.13 and 3.19. It works on 3.19.
Cheers
edit: typo
Thanks! Works in 15.04.
an ideas for Linux Mate 17.2 ? Can't access neither internal nor external card.
Same problem here -_-
So I use adb pull to copy stuff to the laptop
Just use sshdroid

MTP Mode?

Is there a trick to make MTP work under Windows 10? I used it once (via the swipe down, hitting the USB Mode and changing to MTP) before enabeling develper mode.
Now in Developer mode I changed it under Network --> USB Configuration --> MTP but my tablet does not show up on my PC. Do I need to change anything else? Already tried switching between the USB configurations, rebooting the device and so on, but nothing seems to work...
May be wrong but:-
W10 out of the box doesn't support MTP. You may need to install the Android Debug Bridge USB driver on your Windows machine and then connect that driver to your Android device. With the tablet disconnected open W10 Device manager, now connect the tablet to the USB port. Device Manager screen should immediately refresh and show 2 lines at the top of the screen:
Android Device
Android Composite ADB Interface.
Assuming your cable is ok then the absence of these two lines indicates you need the driver installed. The driver is installed as part of Google's Android Studio in the Platform Tools sub directory. If you just want the drivers then they are available to download (no links ) There are automated methods , see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48915118#post48915118 or Nexus Root Toolkit does it. ( You should have usb debugging enabled in the tablets Developer menu)
Once the drivers are installed then when you enable MTP via the Notification or your menu "path" then Device manager will show the tablet under the "Portable Devices" line.
I originally got my laptop to work with the Pixel C using Window 8.1. I had trouble at first finding a driver that would work. I tried various drivers, but I eventually got it to work with PDANet. I believe that the trick for me was to first use PTP to get the correct drivers installed. You should be able to switch from PTP to MTP once PTP is working correctly.
I have subsequently upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. I had a similar issue again with the drivers. I first used PTP to get the proper driver installed and then switched to MTP.
I always use the pull down menu on the Pixel C to change from charging to PTP once working and then to MTP.
With PTP, you should be able to see the Pixel C drive on the computer but only able to access the photos. Once you switch to MTP, you should see all the folders.
For fastboot, you need to use PTP and not MTP.
Found this post via Google, it's an issue for me with the Pixel phone, too. Photo mode works normally, MTP doesn't.
For others who also find this post, I read that supposedly the Pixel phones install ADB drivers automagically, but this isn't happening for me, and @SmokinCharger's fixes haven't worked either.

[SOLVED] Cant connect to windows in Virtualbox

Hi, I am trying to connect my 1P7T to Windows 7 and 10, both in Virtualbox guests. But I cannot get the prompt to come up on the phone. It connects just fine to the Linux host, but not to Windows, it has worked before when I had my system on a different version of Linux but not now. Unless there is some better way to run fastboot commands on my phone in Linux, I am all ears. But I would really like to just use the All in one tool in windows.
Thanks
Got it all figured out, first I had the wrong Virtualbox extension pack installed. I still could not get it to work when set to USB 3.0. I set it to USB 2.0 and the phone is now connected and authorized.
Glad I figured it out on my own, but also good for someone else to know.
