Phone always crashing, even on stock firmware? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hello all,
This is just the continuation of my last post - http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-tmobile/help/s4-acting-buggy-using-roms-t3306395
I was recommended to use Odin to flash the original 4.4.4 firmware, so I did just that and my phone worked for a few hours. But then, it would freeze again and force reboot. Then it would get stuck in bootloop and I would have to take the battery out to reset it. When this finally loaded, I wouldn't get any service and told me to insert an SIM card even though there was one already inserted. A few moments later it would crash again.
After this, I flashed the 4.4.2 firmware through Odin, and the same things kept happening. I'd only be able to use my phone normally for about an hour or so and then the cycle of crashing and bootlooping would start again.
I noticed that whenever I did a factory reset and wiped all data, the phone would work normally for a short period of time. But as usual, a bit later it will freeze.
Is this just a hardware problem with my phone and practically unsolvable, or is there a fix to this?
Any help will be appreciated, thank you.

Did you restore any data or apps after flashing the fresh firmware?

Nope, I just went to the store to get a couple of my most used apps like WhatsApp, Twitter, and Soundcloud. I didn't restore anything else

Did you take out the micro SD card as well? Do you get messages when the device crashes?

Yup, I tried rebooting without my SD card as well, same problem occurs. And usually what happens is it'll boot up, but becomes unresponsive as soon as I touch it. It will then reboot by itself and go into a bootloop. In the rare occasion I am able to bypass my lock screen after booting, I get a com.process is not responding and my background is all black. This too will eventually freeze and enter a bootloop.

Okay I guess I'll be the first to post.
About an hour ago my phone shut off at 26% battery (16gb galaxy S3 running CM10.1 nightly 01/16). As I went to turn it back on it will boot into the CM splash screen spin a few times and just shut off. I attempted to charge it, and turn it back on but same thing. After that an attempt to get into CWM, which I was able to get in and it shut off while I was in it. I also tried putting the phone in download mode and about the same time frame it took for the other attempts resulted in a shut down.
Any advice? Or am I stuck doing a warranty exchange?

Sounds like its your battery not a hardware problem. Leave it overnight or a couple hours charging and if it indeed boots up its your battery.
If it doesn't then flash stock and test it if the same result then call up that Warranty. I've seen this same issue with other devices where the battery dies at 50%+ and usually replacing the battery fixes the problem. Test your battery for overheating or swollen.

The battery isnt swollen, thats one of the things I checked also. I thought it might be that, the only other option I have is to try a different battery. The good thing is I work in a tmobile store so im gonna give that a shot tomorrow.

Can you start it without battery connected to the wall charger? If so try wipe cache. Or after reflash ROM.

Even better then lol just test it out at work. I'm about 80% its your battery specially if you OV/UC.
I have the t-mobile US t999.
Last night I was having an odd issue with the networking dropping. I've had the phone for about a month, modded since day 1 with a CM10 variation of a rom (sorry, I forget the exact rom). I had no issues whatsoever up until this point. After a few restarts thinking maybe it was a fluke issue with the network, or network signal in my room, the phone forced itself into emergency call mode only. I couldn't get it to come out.
So I decided I was going to odin on a stock rom as I could get it into download mode, that went through successfully. When the phone boots, I get the android taking off (Tmobile 4g) logo. Then the white samsung logo, and it doesn't go beyond this. I know this can take long so I left it there for about an hour, nothing. The phone also displays a blue led the entire time it's hanging as well.
Also worth noting, when I attempt to boot into recovery it just vibrates over and over.
Not sure what my next steps should be. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

after you odin, you need to wipe data/ factory reset to boot. If you can't get into recovery ( Power, Home Button, and Volume Up), then try reflashing your stock image in Odin and check your MD5 sum, so you can rule out a bad download
Thanks for the reply, I'm re-downloading the stock rom now to verify it's integrity and do a new flash. I cannot get into recovery, so we will see after the new flash. Pleading ignorance on one subject, how would I go about checking the MD5 sum to verify the file has no issues?
Additionally I did try to Odin recovery and still could not boot into it, this was however before attempting to re-download and flash a stock rom again.
**Edit//Update** Re-downloaded and flashed stock rom, was able to get into recovery and wipe, booted up fine.
Wow.. great idea for a thread and THANK YOU!!
Perfect timing too cause i need a little help please.
I am not new to android but new to samsung (WOW, didnt realize it would be so different from HTC ont he rooting and flashing side of things).
Long story short. I have a tmo s3. Bought it today and wanted to root. phone was working perfectly as it shoudl on stock rom unrooted. I downloaded the tool kit v7, used that to root adn install TWRP and rebooted into the stock rom that is now rooted. Still everything working perfect.
Here is what i did next and where the issues start.
Downloaded Synergy r290, went to recovery.
Wiped Cache, Dalvik, Data, and System (made a backup first)
flashed the rom and rebooted to system
However, nothing ever happened. I see the samsung logo, then all goes black and nothing happens (left it there for 10min)
I cant seem to get back into recovery holding vol up, home and power either and have no adb access to use that. I AM able to get into download mode which i know i can fix my problem here with odin, but i am just not sure what to flash and where.
Is there an easier way??
Thanks in advance for any help!

If you absolutely can't get into recovery to restore your backup..
Flash the UVDLJA root66 file in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1949687 via odin. You will have the latest UVDLJA JB update, and will be rooted. From there, install goo manager from the play store to flash TWRP.
After that you're all set to flash whatever you want (just make sure it's for the Tmobile s3).

Just upload the file to PDA and hit start. Make sure to let it finish completely, once the phone reboots, it's done.

Let's see if you have any solution for me?
Weird problem. When I set kernel frequencies on my phone, they at some point get locked at the maximum frequency. This has happened every time I flash a new ROM or kernel, and I'm worried that it will soon start to affect the battery. I'm using the msmdvcs governor on both kernels that I've tried (stock and faux)

[Q] Potential hardware issues/ brick / batter issue? Please help

Hello all. Let me first thank you for your time in reading my post. I appreciate it. I'm not a fan of only posting for help but I suppose that the site suggesting to always search first is to thank for that because I am usually able to find answers. So please forgive me if this is posted elsewhere but I really have searched and asked around but haven't seen anything similar to my issue. If there is something like it I do not know what to call it. I at first thought it was a sudden death, but realized I think my device model & the symptoms have disproved this theory.
My story...
I bought my AT&T Galaxy S3 feb 2013. I have had it, spent a month or two stock everything. The past month & a half I have flashed CM 10.1 & most recently PK-2.32 for about 3 weeks. Have ran it and loved it with no issues. Used the kernel that comes with both ROMs.
I was charging my phone at work, picked it up after a while, and it wouldn't turn on. It was stuck in a loop of 2 of the screens in my attachments(the battery screen & the SGS3 logo). The battery screen is not in motion, it is stationary like that so that the circle doesn't move.
I have tested quite a few things in regard to what I thought might be the issue...other batteries, chargers, cables pull sim & SD and still no luck...etc.
While the phone is unplugged I get no indication of life. Only when I plug it in will it show me the battery symbol & the logo.
After some playing with it while it is plugged in I have been able to get it into download mode quite frequently with no issue as seen in the third attachment.
So yes I can get into download mode but I'm still "fairly new" and not sure where to proceed from here. I'm not sure what my options are as this is new to me and I can't find anything related, nor can my much more experience friend who is not so new at it that got me into wanting to load custom ROMs.
And yes, as you can see it has tripped my flash counter up once, from what I've read there's only one way to fix that if I need to send it in.
So...If you are able and willing to help I would greatly appreciate it and any options you might give me. I'm willing to try almost anything as my phone is of no use to me at this moment.
if you can access download mode, one option is to connect the device to your PC and flash the stock firmware via odin. untick the Auto Reboot option. once you get a PASS, pull the battery, replace and immediately hit vol up + home + power button. when the device vibrates, release just the power button. in recovery, wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache. reboot.
first, can you boot into recovery at all?

First of all, thank you for your reply. I will definitely use your suggestion if that turns out to be my best option.
Secondly, it's funny you should ask about recovery. I have tried and tried to get into recovery, I have only been able to boot into it one time while it is on a charger, did not try anything because I thought that if I could get in it once I could get in it again, but since then no I have not...
UNTIL just now when you asked, I tried again and I am in TWRP. It is still in recovery at this moment, again only because I have it plugged in so I am open to your advice.
Well, since you're in recovery, I would consider wiping data/factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik, flash rom again and gapps. Reboot to see if that got you cleared up. This would mean you have to reset up your phone for the most part.
You could also consider wiping cache and dalvik, and flashing the rom and gapps. maybe this would correct your issue without wiping the device data.
Sou your device just did this? You weren't trying to flash a new kernel or anything?

You have a few options at this point. You can access recovery and download mode so this is good. You can try and flash a new ROM through TWRP. You can also go into download mode and install a stock rom to start over. With TWRP choose a ROM of your choice (as long it is intended for your model). You could just restore a nandroid of one that you know worked...if you made any.

Sorry about the delay. I was in recovery but I could not get it to recognize my SD card. So I took it out to try to load it in the computer and I'm having the worst time getting either of my computers to recognize either SD card I have even with 2 different readers. Still working on it though...

Ouch sounds like your sd card is corrupted, you may not be able to get any info off it. You may have to use Odin to flash a stock ROM. You can still get to Download right?

Thanks for commenting. You were correct, my sd card was corrupted. Had my 4gb card that was working so I was able to determine that was the case.

I was frustrated at the most recent attempt to load recovery, which I never succeeded in doing. I then decided to load a stock ROM from odin. Started this process, and it was going well until the reboot phase, which is what I was fearing the most.
Once it attempted the reboot, it attempted to reboot, then would just vibrate shortly over and over and over, with nothing on the screen.
Unplugged the device hoping for the best, yet nothing happened upon my attempts to power on.
Plugged back in and would initiate the same sequence in my original post, with the image of the battery, to the image of the SGS3 logo.
So...hoping for any good news someone has to offer, but have come to terms with the worst.
Again, appreciate any comments toward the struggles with my phone.

after flashing stock via odin, you generally have to boot into stock recovery to wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache. reboot.

Well usually after a fresh Stock Install using Odin you need to to go into the recovery and wipe data, cache/dalvic cache, factory reset. That should fix your problem.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm having a difficult time to get it to stay into recovery now again. It acts like it wants to go in but it will just reboot. I will keep trying and if I need anymore help I will come back. Thanks so much again.
Back again. So I kept playing and was finally able to get into recovery as you guys suggested. Once I got in it finished the odin process and actually booted up! First time in a week. So ran through setup and then was able to determine that wifi is not working with stock ROM. Not sure if it's the phone or the ROM.
After it booted up and turned on was able actually do most functions, didn't test a lot wanted to see if it would work without being plugged in...this answer was no.
So after much testing I think what determines what will power it on and off is determined by what it is plugged into. I still think it is having hardware issues though because of the lack of powering on, but I am fairly certain that I can start it every time with a certain cable/charging dock.
I think the next thing I might try since I can get it to turn on is to root it again, load TriangleAway from an SD card, fix flash counter, unroot, load stock & see if they will warranty for hardware issues on the battery connection or whatever it is.
Haven't done this yet but will start tonight & have it finished by tomorrow is the plan. If anyone has any better suggestions I would gladly take them.
So this should be my last post unless a question arises for me.

This is what I said I was going to try to do. Took it to work and found time to do the above. TriangleAway worked a lot better than I ever thought it would. Flash counter reset, loaded unrooted stock and have a replacement on the way. Went very smoothly.
So doubt I will root & rom again until out of warranty. I appreciate everyone's help with my issue.

[Q] Can't start my Galaxy Nexus

Hi evereybody.
I have a GSM galaxy nexus with 4.2.2. Since approximately a month ago the phone started to reboot itself randomly. Sometimes when I was surfing the web, other times when the phone was on standby at night. Well, since the reboots were becoming more frequent I decided to do a factory reset, because I assumed that it was a corrupt application file or something like that. One week into the factory reset it started restarting again by itself, maybe 2 times a day. I searched the web, couldn't find anything useful so I told myself that the 4.3 update should solve the problem (naive me).
Today the update popped and I intermediately installed it. What is my surprise, that in the middle of installation I get the droid icon down on his back and an ERROR message. Rebooted the phone pulling out the battery and now the phone won't pass the multicolored X screen.
I have no unlocked bootloader, and the phone isn't rooted. So I tried to do a factory reset with the default recovery mode the galaxy nexus has. I wiped the phone but I get stuck on the same screen. The funny thing is that every time I try to wipe the caché partition the phone reboots itself immediately.
I don't know what to do. I'm not an advance user, I installed the GNEX TOOLKIT and tried to flash the factory image, but seems like I don't have the USB DEBUGGING option enabled and can't complete the process.
Do I need to send my phone back? (i'm still in warranty) Or is there a way to be able to start my Gnex again?
Thanks in advance.

Random bootloop, Can't find a fix

Good morning guys,
Last night, i was just using my phone like normal when it froze, crashed, and began to bootloop.
I've tried battery pulls, I've tried to factory reset using the volume down + power combo, I've tried to wipe cache and enter safe mode but none of this worked
I was on 10b firmware but since none of the above worked, I tried to KDZ to a stock 11a which still keeps my phone at a bootloop. All I see if the LG logo at startup and a crash.
do you have any suggestions on how I can try to fix this? according to reddit this random bootloop has been happening to multiple people
thanks in advance for your help
It started happening to me, as well, over the weekend. My phone crashed and started bootlooping, stuck at the LG startup screen where it stalls for a few seconds and then goes black. Every now and then it will boot up properly, but the phone crashes after about two minutes and starts bootlooping again. I cannot manage to wipe the phone because it so seldom boots properly. I noticed that the phone gets very hot. I suppose that I will need to return it to Verizon for warranty replacement, but I hate having so much data on the phone when I return it. I was doing nothing unusual with the phone when this started happening.

yeah it's definitely weird. I was rooted on 10b holding out for a bootloader exploit down the line.
I called up verizon and theyre shipping me a new g4 since it was still under the 1 year warranty. I hope it's still rootable with the firmware it'll ship with
Same here
Hey guys! I thought I'd reply instead of making a new post because I think I'm in the same boat. My dads phone has just started doing this, but the weird thing is he wasn't rooted! I was able to get it to the recovery and tried the wipe cache and safe mode options, it didn't do anything.. I then tried flashing the kdz but no luck..
Hope some of the smart folks here can help us!

I was fortunate to get it into download mode so I kdz it back to 11a stock so as to wipe all data, thankfully. The stock reset made no difference, as it still would rarely boot, and even when it did boot it would crash fairy quickly. My warranty replacement should arrive tomorrow.

yup, i kdzed up to 11a and it went from modified status to official so hopefully that wiped everything on my phone too. My new one will be coming in tomorrow
I just received my warranty replacement, and it is an 11a factory refurb device that looks like new. No noticeable screen lag thus far, but it is running awfully warm as it restores all my apps and some data from the Verizon Cloud.

Is there any downside to refurbished devices?

I think not, and I actually prefer buying factory refurbs in most cases when possible because you are assured of the product being carefully inspected. In this case, my phone looks brand new and is performing just fine. The initial heat concern has gone away as the phone has settled in.
Please Help!!!!!
I'm trying to help my sister out who is in Ecuador right now. Her phone was a little slow today and kept going to the red verizon sign - so she turned it off and took the battery out.... when she turned it on it said the SD card is blank. She has 800 pics on it from her trip and is wondering if there is anything to get them back???? Please help!!!! Any suggestions would be helpful!
weird i had the same thing happen a few days ago also...using new phone now.
This issue happened to me out of no where last week and had a replaement sent. Wasn't rooted

same problem here ...
rooted device. nothing special today .. and then: bootloops.
When i remove the battery for a longer time, sometimes the g4 boots properly. But after a few minutes it'll bootloop again.
Any ideas?

What's the manufacturing date of the phone that failed? I'm trying to figure out if it's just a matter of time (the May ones failed first, then June), or if it's only May boards with the issue.

Note 4 either won't start, or has random reboots that make it no longer start

Have had this problem for about two weeks now. Every time I get the phone able to boot (either by reflashing a rom or odin) it will work for a few hours then it'll freeze in the middle of use or idle and restart. After restarting a few times the phone will no longer boot and I have to reflash it with odin or TWRP. It's happened so much though that as of today even if I get it to start it'll end up freezing up shortly after booting, get stuck on the black start screen and hang there until I pull the battery. At that point the phone will only boot into download or recovery. I'm at the end of what I can do and out of ideas.
So far I have tried
Odin to:
N910PVPS4COK1_N910PSPT4COK1_N910PVPS4COK1_HOME.tar.md5
N910PVPU4DPH4_N910PSPT4DPH4_N910PVPU4DPH4_HOME.tar.md5
and flashing multiple different roms to try to fix it.
Sometimes it won't even mount data, cache, system, etc within twrp.
I've also tried to format each individual partition when it wouldn't start no matter what and that did make it so it was able to start but the same problems were there after it did start.
I've searched and I cannot find a solution to anything similar to the problem I'm having. If anyone has any ideas they'd be greatly appreciated.

Try falsh repair firmware with pit file in odin.
Do factory reset immediately from recovery after flash firmware to get clean OS.
You can download repair firmware from here
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24591020540821805
Extract firmware you will get pit file inside of it.

I suppose this is a long shot, but are you running on the original or an old battery? It's possible that a bad battery is causing the reboots. I was back and forth to the Sprint store about 4 times in one week. They first tried flashing the firmware. (Yeah, I could have done it, but I have insurance.) They sent me home and on the way my phone rebooted itself. I got a replacement Note 4, but it started getting hot, then also rebooting. They "let" me upgrade to a Note7, which I loved. I had to give it back even though it was from the new, supposedly safe batch. At this point, I couldn't even get the Note 4 to boot at all. Boot loops, or would boot into download mode. Couldn't do anything with it, except pull the battery. Got a third Note 4, but also ordered a new battery pack from Sprint. They were and still are, only $24.95, with free shipping! You get a new battery, an external charging unit and a carrying case for the battery. (You have to use your own charger.) This finally fixed the problem. I had two batteries when I ordered the new one. I'm pretty sure one of the older batteries was defective, even though it wasn't bulging. I'm still using the other one that's also older, even though it is bulging a bit. It charges and runs fine. No over-heating. So, my problem was a combination of a defective battery and a couple of bad phones. The other thing was some of the previous firmware seemed to make some Note 4s run hot or get hot while charging. Things are much better since PG1. YMMV.
I had this issue and sent my phone back to Samsung THREE TIMES, I thought I bricked my phone from custom rom.
Turns out it was my battery. Sounds dumb, but true. Strangely even with battery out, I was having issue. Once I put in new good battery issue resolved.
I had that issue on my pc and my note. I had a creepy stalker in full control of my device (which basically was a virtual machine). I could tell when I was on the right track to get rid of him because it shut me down. I can't say that's what's going on with you but it is a thing.

Note 4 batteries are dying for lots of people anywhere from 18 months to just over 2 years, and the symptom is often fail to boot, boot loops, etc. As piggynuts said, it's not logical, but it's true. It happened to me, and when I replaced the battery, everything was fine.
