ElementalX Kernel Manager Automatic Updates - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all. I recently updated to the stock February security build (MMB29Q), and flashed SuperSU 2.66 systemless and EX kernel. While poking around EXKM, I noticed the option to automatically download and push kernel updates to my phone. Is there any danger of breaking my install with this option? Can kernel updates run just like an OTA update without breaking my root or otherwise causing system harm? I am running stock 6.0.1 with ElementalX kernel 3.10.73-ElementalX-N5X-1.05. The only modifications I have made are the Material Bootloader mod and the Nexus 5X Surround Sound Mod.
Thank you for any input. I just want to be sure I won't break my system/brick my phone since I really enjoy my current setup. This is my first experience with a custom kernel and I would rather ask questions now than face the consequences later.

Always update kernel from EXKM. No issues so far.

Latest update: 2016-10-27 To view a changelog, you can visit http://www.cmxlog.com/13/quark/ for a rough idea up to the build date.
Hi all. I was able to compile this stock build of CM 13.0 thanks to the efforts/hard works of Skrilax_CZ, baybutcher27, the folks who created Resurrection Rom Remix, and those over at CyanogenMod. It takes some minor features from Resurrection Rom apparently (i.e. notification light, some tiny performance/battery tweaks, and the ability to install Motorola apps). It is otherwise stock CM 13 and I use this daily. I and the other authors/devs assume no responsibility if you damage your device somehow.
Please don't feel pressured to update any more often than you wish .
Notes:
In order to make my calling work for Verizon, I had to go under Settings->Cellular networks->Preferred network type, and select LTE/CDMA (not LTE/GSM/UMTS). I assume GSM users should be fine with the defaults.
My recommendations to install:
Install TWRP 3.0.2 if you haven't already: http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...recovery-twrp-2-8-7-0-touch-recovery-t3180308
Perform a backup of your current system/ROM (not really needed if just flashing a newer version).
Perform a factory reset/wipe (if coming from another ROM). If not coming from another ROM, still safest to do a dalvik/art cache reset.
Install the .zip
Install the appropriate google apps (http://opengapps.org/ , ARM, 6.0). I would think nano or micro is best.
(Optional) Install a custom kernel. The best at the time of this writing are at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-maxx/development/kernel-bhb27-kernel-t3207526 (CM-NX-RR-M builds for Marshmallow)
The latest is here: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=50122
Wipe dalvik/art cache if you install another kernel.
Reboot and enjoy
Kernel Adiutor is very good for performance/power saving adjustments:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.grarak.kerneladiutor
If you are using bhb27 kernels, then you should use his version of Kernel Adiutor:

I'll be back to post updates fairly regularly (~every 1-2 weeks), but I also work full time in addition to being a Dad (those of you who are know how that is ) and won't really be able to response to PMs very well. The sources I used can be found under the post on XDA here at http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-maxx/development/rom-resurrection-remix-t3316232 (device, vendor, and kernel trees). Thanks and God bless.
I just flash this version and its absolutely amazing.
Good job devs!
Bugs I noticed:
-Settings for LED doesn't work.
-Android Auto says is not a supported device.
-Quick Charge 2.0 doesn't seems to work.
-Phone gets really hot when charging.

I have been tempted to flash this all day, but I love how smooth my phone has been on resurrection remix and I enjoy the extra customizations it has. I'm eagerly awaiting the next resurrection remix build for all the latest git changes

That's a bummer with some of those bugs. Hopefully those will be taken care of soon and I'll be able to sync and rebuild. Did all of these happen to be with the stock kernel, or did you happen to flash another (like baybutchers)? I've seen a few specific to the tiles, but I dont have an Android Auto system to check against. Also, if they are working (or some) in resurrection then I could possibly try to patch this.

I don't know exactly, I installed it by downloading the zip and gapps to my PC and used the ADB sideload, before that I was using the last nightly of CM12.1. I did that and I didn't loose my info (either way I did a TWRP backup of everything, except cache previously), so I think it was the CM kernel. When I installed for the first time CM I flashed also the zip and gapps, if that way the stock kernel is changed with the CM kernel I think I'm using CM kernel.

Yeah that sounds like the stock cm kernel then if you didn't flash anything like that separately. I don't know if it would help, but you could always try the other kernel I posted about and see if Android Auto works (would have to restore your backup if you didn't want to keep it). It just depends how much you care and if it's worth staying with the ROM to you. There's obviously bound to be some bugs, but I enjoy using a lean version of the latest and greatest system. Thanks for the feedback .
Installed it 2h ago, everything is running fine so far.
This is smoother than the old cm and than rr too. I'm impressed!
I'm using Bhb Kernel.
My phone is turbo charging, led is working...
No bugs for me.
Nice job, mate! I'm glad we got a new cyanogenmod that we can have updates. Keep strong!

I've just been going under the built in privacy guard and setting advanced permissions to where apps I don't need to start at boot are denied, in addition to also denying a lot of them from being allowed to keep the device awake. I get very little battery drain in standby this way. If the cell signal is too weak though, it's really hard to prevent extra drain as it over compensates to get a good signal.

It's a little hard to say since there is a lot and I am just syncing to the main CyanogenMod 13 repository. However, this is a good link if you go by the date and something similar (such as the Nexus 6 which shares a lot of hardware).

This may be a dumb question but does this have VoLTE enabled and working(Verizon user)? Since it is CyanogenMod based I assume not but just waned to ask.
calsurferpunk, can you fix wifi on XT1254 with stock Brasil 1225's 6.0.1 ROM? CM12.1 and CM13 detect Moto Maxx and Droid Turbo radio very good!

Your assumption is correct. I don't believe this has ever worked with CyanogenMod. I'm on Verizon and haven't seen it.

I had this problem on other ROMs as well until I restored the original manufacturer ROM, set GPS to device only, verified it worked, then flashed the new ROM. You might have to do the same here. I believe it's been a long ongoing bug with CyanogenMod (and probably others).
pretty thx for the cm13,did it have ambient display?
I am downloading this at work right now. It is slow and will take me a couple to download.
While it is dl'g, I have a question about wiping. Do I still need to do a factory reset if I am coming from a marshmallow cm13 RR rom?Baybutchers?
Also, I have not been able to get my GPS to work properly. In your post #17, you referred to original manufacturer rom. Where can I get this rom to set the gps? I do have computerfreek's room saved as a backup if I could use it? I don't have easy access to a computer to do a fastboot.
Thx.

Custom Kernel to Use with Stock MM 6.0 on Tab 10.5

Magisk 10 finally came out and with it an explanation for why Magisk Hide does not yet work on stock Samsung kernels: "Stock Samsung Kernel hides namespace of processes. Magisk Hide cannot work properly"
Happy to finally find out the reason, but now I need to look for a replacement kernel.
Any custom Marshmallow-supporting kernels out yet that I might try? I saw that the newest IronRom comes with its own new kernel too, but would that be usable for this purpose?
To answer my own question right away! Here is the new MM IronKernel from Tkkg1994.

Anyone get V4A to work with Nougat and Magisk?

Hi y'all, first off I have the G920P, just recently upgraded to Nougat QC7 stock ROM, modified and running the SkyHigh kernel v5.01 with Magisk v12. Everything runs pretty smooth, even got Liveboot working successfully (there's a reason I mention Liveboot.) Now I decided to try to get Viper4Android to work. Of course, installing the standard apk fails when it comes to installing the driver. So I tried the V4A Magisk module and it installed fine, however on reboot, my Liveboot no longer works and when opening the V4A app it asks to install the driver, I hit yes and it says it successfully installed and to please reboot. I reboot and of course Liveboot still doesn't show, but otherwise it boots fine. Once I re-open the V4A app it is asking me to install the driver yet again, and the whole system at times seems a bit unstable until I disable the V4A module in Magisk Manager. Does anyone have any ideas, or has anyone gotten this to successfully work? If so I'd love a suggestion lol. I really would like to keep my Liveboot working, but I'd kinda like to get Viper working too. Thanks in advance for any help, suggestions, ideas, etc.
Chuck
I could not get the V4A module to install under Magisk 12; however, it works just fine with Magisk 13.
This is the version that I used: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=745425885120735287
Magisk Uninstaller (should not be needed, but if you want it) is here: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=745425885120735289
NOTE: You are, I believe using the @tdhite kernel, which is based in Magisk 12. Not sure what the impact of installing Magisk 13 will be.
The kernel is fine with Magisk v13 (beta, to be sure is all that is released there). Magisk v13 beta still has problems, so beware. The SkyHigh kernel and module are v13 compatible as much as v12, just so you know. The reason v12 is packaged in is v12 is the only stable Magisk version at this point.
The bigger issue is Magisk v13 beta working stably and reliably, but if you are willing to debug its failures, it's ok. There should be no need to uninstall to upgrade if you want to play. Reloading the kernel flash will cleanly load up v12 if all goes badly.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
@koop1955 Thank you for that information! I will bookmark those so I can get back to them once v13 is reliable and stable enough for my kernel
@tdhite Thanks bud as Well! I think I will just stay where I am until the kernel and v13 play nicely. Just got this thing as perfect as I can for now, well other than ram use creeping up, but that's only every now and then, and for another topic. I *might* get my nandroid current and play a little if I get bored and want to tinker. I guess I can safely assume then the reason Liveboot stops working with the V4A module installed is because of Magisk v12...?
Thank you to both of you guys for the help and advice. At least now I know it's not some dumb issue with my device lol.
Chuck
@digitalchaos1980 and @tdhite, I have had a good experience with one particular version of Magisk 13, which is why I added it to my AFH. Other and newer versions...not so much. To be expected with a work in progress.
At some point, Magisk 13 will be final and we can move forward.

Just to be sure, folks realize there is full equalizer support in my SkyHigh kernel and the bands are all adjustable, even per channel if desired, in Synapse, right? Just noting in case that's all you need, because it is a no-CPU-load way of getting it done.

Help me choose between Stock vs Custom ROM

Hi,
I'll receive my Nexus 5X tomorrow, and I don't know what to do: keep on stock, install custom rom, root, magisk ?
My needs are:
Stable and Fast
Camera with zero shutter lag
Ad Block (at least in chrome, apps/youtube would be cool)
optional: Pixel Launcher
optional: Torch shortcut on power button (or double tap or anything else)
optional: OTA
The easiest solution seems to stay on stock, install CameraNX and Pixel Launcher apk and find an app for ad blocking.
But is it possible to replace stock camera with NX, and launcher with pixel (I mean really replaced, the stock ones don't use any memory) ?
Is there an app such as samsung Package Disabler Pro?
Possible to flash a different kernel and stay on stock with OTA and no root?
If I choose custom ROM (pure nexus, pixel rom, ..), I'll loose in speed, stability and ota I guess, right?
Thanks
Hi.
My recommendation for you would be PureNexus or ABC rom. Both of which are pretty stable and fast. You can have long press power button for torch and install CameraNX. You could use Moab for adblock since it does not use any apk and simply replaces /etc/host for blocked domains. Both of which roms comes with Pixel launcher by default. Be careful while flashing GApps since Open Gapps removes Pixel launcher by default. Since i noticed that you are not familiar that much with Android OS, i wouldnt recommend you maintaining root and OTA updates /there is a way though/. There is no way for custom kernel and OTA to work Last time i checked i think that CameraNX is a stand alone package so it can be used with stock camera app. I have no experience with Pixel rom but you wont loose in speed or stability with this roms. Kind regards.
I used to be a flash junky back in the day. Frankly, unless it's a poorly written rom, you won't notice much in performance. Yeah, you could get some additional features. I've found that just rooting it gives me what I want. For ad blocking, and that's about the only thing I use root for, adaway works well. It's also very easy to update with the ota from google and flashfire.

[ROM][TW] StockWiz - stable, no mods, stock [QK1][i9505][Debloated-767MB] 09 May 2019

StockWiz
Touchwiz Stock Experience
Smooth and stable as possible
Introduction
I am aware that our smartphone is really obsolete and this ROM comes late.
I just wanted to do justice to this glorious drive that has been with me for so many years and it is still working and quite fast.
Why this ROM
During last years I enjoyed installing many custom ROMs and kernels, but while I was having fun most of the time I was wasting my time experiencing reboots, crashing apps, unstable kernels, battery draining fast, thousand of other minor/big issues.
I treasured all my experience and created my ROM following my thoughts.
This ROM was only for me and now I want to share it with you.
What is this ROM
*ONLY STOCK EXPERIENCE*, no mods, no custom apps.
This will remain as clean and stable as possible.
I just removed all bloatware, unlocked all csc features and repacked it with the latest patches I’ve found.
What is NOT this ROM
In this ROM there aren’t any custom or modded apps.
There are lot of other awesome ROMs plenty of nice mods. Pick one of them if you are looking for non stock experience.
Feel free to change by yourself your Launcher and your keyboard (I personally use Nova Launcher and SwiftKey).
Feel free even to use it for your mods or apply root.
Features - (TL: DR; Full stock)
Stock Kernel
Stock Firmware Touchwiz
Based on QK1
No root (you can root this rom if you want)
Security patch 2017-08-01
DeBloated
DeKnoxed
ZipAligned
Odexed (Is faster and stable than DeOdexed ROMs)
Disabled Quick Connect S-Finder Buttons
Minimal build.prop optimizations
Stock switch-on switch-off logos
English as default language (available lot of languages)
CSC: Camera unlocked features (shutter sound menu and more)
CSC: Call unlocked features (Record calls and more)
CSC: Messages unlocked features (recipient limit 999 and more)
CSC: Enabled Display Mirroring
CSC: Other Misc
All is built to have the smooth and stable ROM ever.
Please do not ask features that are not on stock firmwares
Any advice or constructive criticism are welcome.
Installing - (TL: DR; TWRP, QK1, Only i9505)
TWRP recovery request.
Copy the zip StockWiz_v[x.x]_[date]_[features].zip into your SD Card.
Backup your data
Reboot into Recovery mode.
Install "StockWiz_v[x.x]_[date]_[features].zip".
Wipe Cache and Dalvik
Restart the device.
Done!
Manually uninstall applications like Shazam if you don’t need them (I’ll remove them in next releases). Change your launcher and keyboard if you want (I suggest Nova Launcher and SwiftKey). You can also apply root.
N.B.: if there is signal or WiFi issue, it needs to flash again. If the problem persists you have to flash *twice* any stock QK1 firmware with ODIN

Amazing! I will test this ROM soon! I hope battery drain is good
I'll report bug and issues
I have tried almost all ROM's for s4 xD
Maybe back to stock (a clean stock) is better (?)
For kernel or battery drain
Idk
I'll test it
Ty so much for posting this ROM!
App advice
Maybe stock browser and S memo
They are really useful, especially S memo!

Thank you so much @FIFFY_2 . I have tried many ROMs too, and it was funny.
But I prefer a ultra-stable and clean device now.
I think this is also the best for battery drain (remember to use this ROM at least three/four days in order the kernel can settle down)

I agree, S-Memo is a great app, unfortunately it would depend on other fat apps (I'll check to be sure)
Samsung browser works really fast, but I chose to remove it from pre-installed apps and permit who like it to install by himself from google play.
You can find the updated Samsung Internet here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sec.android.app.sbrowser
Cheers!
Wi-Fi won't turn on problem FIX
Ok, installed right now
Some *issues with wifi (wont turn on)* and find a stock rom (QK1) is very hard in 2019 (too slow download speed)
But if anyone have the same problem, can easily fix follow the post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/i9505-develop/rom-untouched-stock-rom-t3419034
Downloading the rom and flash it or *just flash with odin modem and bootloader files*
It works right now
Enjoy!
any way to add samsung account?
i think you have removed it, right?
@FiFFiO
getting error 7 while installing.
Cannot install or update apps in Google play store.
Will flash gasps and let you know.
Thanks for the Rom. It's great.
Nice rom man! It's fast and perfect. Do you know how correctly install xposed systemless? I've installed magisk 19.3 and latest magic manager 7.3.2 then I don't succeed in founding correct package to obtain xposed for Samsung lollipop 5.0.1. Someone can help? Thanks in advance
Thanx. This seems to be a serious rom, mainly what I'm looking for.
But I totally agree to the previous comments:
1. Smemo is useful.
2. Stock browser is useful
3. a link to solve WiFi problems with necessary files is needed
What do I have to flash again? The bootloader (which)? the modem (which)?
4. Istalling Xposed via Magisk should be possible. Are there issues?
and: What means "TWRP recovery request" ??
I hope this rom works without TWRP and I can use the old CWM Recovery by Philz.
TWRP always makes problems for me, when I try to load the TWRP backup to another phone.
With CWM no such problems.
Regards,
Foh
OK, I have tried it. Looks good at the first view, but still some minor useless system app leftovers.
Would like to uses this "stock" rom, but ....
The problem is, I can't install Xposed Framework. Neither directly, nor via Magisk. After flashing the framework, the boot gets stuck at the samsung logo.
Will try a deodexed TW 5.0.1 now ....

Why you want install systemless xposed and Magisk, as for me its no need for old device, I install SuperSu and system xposed, all works (attach system xposed installer below).
About not wokring WiFi, here is link on SuperTouchWiz v9 there you can find modem and bootloader for WiFi.

Because my banking TanGeneratorApp requests an unmodiefied system.
