But where does it say it on the box? I don't have it with me, but presumably there's a way to tell through the software on the device?

You would need to be rooted and change an option in your build prop

I am sure I read it earlier today on AndroidCentral that it was a mixture of both hardware and software, that article stated the Exmor RS in the X was an upgraded sensor of the Z5. I believe it was the article from MWC where they quoted the US Sony division head.
As i'm aware they use different sensors.

Yeah, you are right but this is today. Yesterday it was available but surely, due to the price was so good, they finished all units.
