EFS/EMEI Issue - Galaxy Ace II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys
What's the procedure for recovering the EFS on a GT-i8160? I don't have a backup of it and Galaxy toolbox says the device is not supported and wont save it (assuming coz it isnt on the phone). Because of this my EMEI is blank and I want to hexedit it back to the phone.
I am running stock jellybean. Any advice, step-by-step would be appreciated. cheers!

In many cases, missing (blank) IMEI could be done by a 3 parted flash using Odin.

Missing IMEI / No Mobile Data / Dev block / EFS Thread (UPDATE 7.16.12)

TO MINIMIZE THE CHANCE YOU LOSE YOUR IMEI, BE SURE AND ROOT/CWM USING THIS METHOD:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
AND ONLY FLASH ROMS INTENDED FOR USE ON YOUR MODEL
**UPDATED 7/16/12**
questions we are trying to answer:
- what versions of clockworkmod, if any, are prone to causing IMEI problems?
- what rooting methods, if any, are prone to causing IMEI problems?
- what ROMs are causing imei issues, and on which models? is the rooting/cwm method related?
- where is the IMEI stored on the phone, and most importantly
- is it possible to back it up, and restore it once corrupt?
RESTORING AN /EFS BACKUP DOES NOT APPEAR TO RESTORE AN IMEI AT THIS TIME.
TO BE SAFE, USE THIS GREAT SCRIPT BROUGHT TO YOU BY DROTHENBERGER AND SFERNANDEZ:

IF YOU HAVE THIS ISSUE, PLEASE FILL THIS OUT AND POST. THANKS PINOYMUTT:
1. CARRIER VERSION:
(ATT, TMo, Sprint, Verizon, Bell, etc.)
2. ROOT METHOD:
Exact method you used to root, please link to the thread if possible
3. CWM INSTALLATION METHOD:
Again, please be specific. Examples include the ADB/DD method, flashing via ODIN, etc.
4. CWM VERSION:
Which CWM are you using -- the Sprint version or one of the Clockwork ones?
5. ROM(s) FLASHED:
Did you flash any ROMs after the above, and how did you flash it?
6. WHEN DID YOU FIRST NOTICE IMEI WAS GONE?:
It helps if you know which step may have caused the issue
7. OTHER NOTES:
RULES
1. Please READ THE ENTIRE THREAD BEFORE POSTING. There is way too much info in here for me to summarize.
2. ALWAYS READ THE THREAD BEFORE POSTING
3. If your phone is working properly and your IMEI is intact, and the method you used to root and install CWM has already been detailed by another member, WE DO NOT NEED TO KNOW IT ALSO WORKED FOR YOU. LET'S TRY AND KEEP THE THREAD CLUTTER DOWN
4. No arguing or bickering over stupid crap. Keep that to PMs.
5. READ THE THREAD BEFORE POSTING. THANK YOU.
original post:
If you have flashed a new ROM on your phone recently and have found difficulty or impossibility in getting cellular or data service, chances are you have corrupted or deleted the file that stores your IMEI. i'll try to answer a couple of common questions and detail methods i used, and why i think they failed
What is an IMEI?
your network identifies your phone by its IMEI. once i had "lost" mine, AT&T's network would not provide service to my device, even after getting a new sim card.
How can I check if mine is corrupted?
your IMEI is a 15-digit number under your battery. dialing *#06# should display the same number under your battery. if you get a different number or something like 0 / 00, you have corrupted your IMEI.
Changing the APNs
marginally effective at best. your phone is not registering on AT&T's network as a device it should send data to, so it doesn't matter what APN you use.
flashing to stock rom
did not work for me. probably because this probably doesn't effect the /efs partition, where the IMEI is stored.
use CWM / nandroid restore
from what I can tell, a standard backup does not back up the EFS partition. you need to use something like EFS pro to backup your /efs directory (where the IMEI is stored). restoring my phone to a previously stable and working save did not restore my IMEI
editing nv_data.bin
no one has been able to find this file on the SGH-i747
using a terminal / AT interface
it looks like the IMEI is encrypted and causes a stack overflow when you try to query it. notice how i can query my IMSI (edited) fine, but querying the IMEI causes a stack overflow. pic:

i probably tried a few more things i can't think of right now. moral of the story is... approach unstable roms with caution, and BACK UP YOUR EFS PARTITION!!!
anyone had any luck restoring a busted IMEI? :highfive:
EFS pro has not been updated to the correct partition for i747, so currently that method to backup/restore will not work.

thanks for the info. will copying the entire /efs directory to my extsd using root explorer work?
It's not the EFS folder but the correct block partition in the dev folder.

thanks for filling me in on this, still an android nub compared to you guys... did some digging and found this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-1689623.html
is that info still relevant/correct?
Not sure but cant hurt to do a full backup of all the blocks until someone can confirm that it's the same with the s4 version of the galaxy s3.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
can anyone confirm if using root explorer to backup /dev safely backs up your IMEI?
how can you do a backup of all the blocks on the phone?
I have not used this yet but you should read this thread and give it a try.

On my older captivate backing up the efs folder worked. Then if you loose the imei, restoring the folder or nvdata file fixed it. I'd backup the efs folder just in case.

EFS Pro DO work with the S3. (I haven't try restoring my EFS, but backup went fine)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1308546
What did you to loose IMEI? What ROM did you flash or what did you do wrong to cause this? Better to learn from somebody's else mistakes then your own.
When I had the problem on my Samsung Captivate, the EFS was wiped out when I converted from a CyangonMod rom to a standard Captivate based ROM. I didn't actually lock down what caused the issue (since I could easily fix it by restoring the nvdata.bin file - which I just kept handy on my external SD card and PC as well). I think it might have been when I ran a one-click ODIN to restore back to the RFS file system to install one of the custom Captivate ROMS. The only issue I ran into was the IMEI was different than what it should have been, but no usability issues at all. So moral of the story is, it's possible it can happen any time you flash a new ROM, backup your EFS folder and keep it in a safe place (I believe it's just the NVDATA.BIN file you need because that's all I restored), and enjoy the variety of custom ROMs these developers are building (because they are great!).
That's my $.02
EDIT: Oh and the Nandroid backups don't backup the EFS folder, so don't think a CWM backup will save you.
to those of you suggesting to back up nv_data.bin... just tell me where it is and i'll be glad to. i was no able to find it anywhere in /efs or /dev

i am pretty use it happened when i flashed redruM onto my phone like a dumbass thinking [GSM Universal] meant it would work for my device
On the Captivate flashing a 1-click ROM would fix the issue. I have the issue too, but I really do not know what to do about it, I have looked all around the /efs partition, and I'm not sure where it could be.

don't mean to discourage you, but i had to get a new device.
one thing that i wanted to try but could not was to take a stable EFS backup from an SGH-i747, locate the IMEI and change it to my own, and restore my /efs folder with those files. i'm not sure if decrypting the IMEI is possible, or if even getting to that point is possible.
if anyone has any ideas on how to extract an IMEI from an EFS backup feel free to PM me. i'm interested in experimenting on my personal backup (from my second device)
Ultimately if anyone should lose their IMEI or bork the EFS partition...these guys can fix it. They are very reputable and have fixed my Captivate back in the day....they now offer fixes for this device now. Its only 30 bucks and keep them in mind instead of paying 200 for insurance claims.
NO SPRINT OR CDMA models.

Well I will be getting a new phone on the 10th, but until then I would really like to figure out how to restore the IMEI. Who knows, it might not be possible at this point. When I get the new phone I will definitely be backing up my /efs directory, first thing. I completely forgot to do it, and it cost me.
How are you guys backing up the efs partition? Just a simple folder copy? Or a complete cwm backup?

Restoring IMEI through ODIN?

I lost my IMEI after flashing a rom yesterday and i have been researching all over google/xda and been trying all the options and still have no luck.
is it possible to restore the IMEI through ODIN? i dont have my IMEI backed up. on my phone my IMEI shows up as "0" (zero)
one of the reasons I am having difficulty with some of the methods is that my version of windows is just a virtual software so the NV read-write program wouldnt run on it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1804117
another tutorial uses QPST but im stuck on a step because i can run a program within the program for some weird reason.
any help would be great. i havent found any other method but i read flashing through odin might be possible. i just cant find a TUT of how to do it. thanks in advanced
I have not heard of people using Odin. Most use this method.

I would ask someone if you can use their computer to get it running.

[Q] How to upgrade the Samsung SGH-I927R (Rogers) Captivate-glide to ICS?

Hello;
I've a Rogers SGH-I927R and can't manage to upgrade firmware to ICS via Kies (get error saying my phone does not support initializing, see attached).
I've not rooted the mobile, just unlocked it via code in order to use it in Spain with Orange Network.
Could you, please, share with me a way to upgrade manually (although it's from Rogers I believe it does not matter if I upgrade it with the AT&T ROM, as I'm using it unlocked in Spain with the Orange Network).
Thanks a lot!

download odin and grab the firmware from www.samfirmware.com .. this will give you stock AT&T ICS.
*** I'M TELLING YOU NOW, IF YOU DON'T DO THIS FIRST YOU'LL BE SORRY ** BACKUP YOUR EFS!!!!!
I didnt backup my EFS .. What happens with AT&T Rom going overtop of rogers is it actually changes your efs to an AT&T efs code where the IMEI store point doesn't show up in the same place of the file as it did with Rogers. This has been confirmed in my phone (and i lost my imei) and as well in Bubor's.
If you need help doing this PM me and I'll be happy to give you the exact copy/paste steps to do so.
Thanks!!!!... Please, just one last step...
THANKS a lot for your response and for your advise!!!!!
Yes: I'd appreciate the exact copy/paste steps to do the EFS backup... Thanks!
Additionally to the EFS backup you suggest, I'd like to make a copy of the current firmware, in case anything goes wrong...Would you know a way to get it (or do you think I just download from samfirmware the SGH-I927R original one, and if something goes wrong, I just follow your commented process, but with the Rogers firmware?
... And, please, let me ask you one more question... ... As you have already followed this process, would you suggest the upgrade, or to leave on original version?
THANKS a lot for your help!

I'm reading in all this posts the risk of this... do you think it's worth to upgrade?
Thanks again!
Yes, I think it is worth to upgrade. I never had any serious problem playing with different ROMs. Be sure to read carefully the instructions and you should be fine. But yes, there is always a risk.

what rodrigoprimo posted is the proper way to backup the EFS ..
What you'll want to do is download the pre-rooted gingerbread rom for Rogers (make sure its for rogers), make sure you backup your efs using the rogers rom ... after you have it backed up, its play time
When you upgrade to the AT&T roms (ICS) you loose the SGH-I927R efs and it converts it to an AT&T...
there's a thread for it, check in the Dev forum there's a post for "Everything Glide" look for the pre-rooted rom.
If the download links dead, hit me up w/ a PM and i'll email you my google drive link where I have a copy saved for us.

Hi yohan4ws;
Thanks again for your comments.. I must admit that, although I want to upgrade, I'm a bit scared about breaking my phone and not been able to recover if I do something wrong, so, I'm trying to be very carefull for the upgrade...
I've been looking in the forums for "Everything Glide", as you suggest, but, although I can find 8 references to it, I can't find the correct thread...
Am I looking wrongly, or maybe the thread has dissapeared?
Could you, please point me to it?
Thanks again!
I have Captivate Glide S I927R with baseband version I927RUXKJ5 Gingerbread . I also want to update to ICS but Rogers model does not support the update from Samsung Kies . I have thought of following the instructions from here androidtotal.com/root-samsung-captivate-glide-sgh-i927-sgh-i927r/ but the link they have provided is dead . I looked at the firmwares at SamMobile and found this sammobile.com/firmwares/3/?download=2179 . Is it the ICS update ?
Okay I upgraded my glide first from the rogers stock to. To the at&t ICS update ROM thank God I backed my efs folder first because the upgrade locked my phone I then flashed lite ROM 0.9 ,restored my efs successfully...after a few days I decided to go for the paranoid JB ROM,that equally locked my phone and I could not restore my efs no matter what I did (using the efs tool v1.9)
I had to flashback lite ROM to be able to restore the efs partition.
Is there anything am doing wrong?

sorry guys
my friend have a i927r (rogers) and somehow after using it with another sim card, it asked for network unlock key
as my friend says, he inserted the wrong code for many times and then it locked forever
so he flashed the phone with at&t rom (2.3.5) !
so now there is no IMEI and no backup for EFS folder unfortunately
is there any method to fix this mess?
Finally got brave and go for it... but, got stuck...

Hi again;
After lot of thinking, I got brave and realised that it's time to move further, so I go for the SGH-I927R upgrade to the ATT latest firmware... But I'm afraid I need even further help (sorry for the simple questions, it's my first firmware upgrade, and still got lots of doubts...)
Please, let me comment you what I've done up to now (thanks to all your help!):
- Downloaded Odin3_v3.09 (SW to flash the firmware).
- Downloaded I927RUXKJ5_I927RRWCKJ5_RWC (Rogers firmware, the same I have now, but downloaded in case something goes wrong, I can go back to my current state) (...Yes, I go for it, but just in case... :angel
- Downloaded I927UCLJ3_I927ATTLJ3_ATT (AT&T firmware fom 2012 October: This is the one I have to flash, after backing up the EFS)
- Downloaded the EFS_Professional_2.1.73 (SW to backup the EFS, found in other thread on this forum, in case this is easier that using the EFS backup commented commands (here I see how to backup, but not sure about how to restore, so, thought that this SW might be usefull to restore the EFS after AT&T firmware is flashed)
- Downloaded the "CarrierIQ FREE kernel" (SW to remove the AT&T Spyware.. Not sure if I need it, as I have the Rogers version).
- Tried to download the "Rogers rooted based rom" from the "[GUIDE] Rooting the Samsung Captivate Glide i927/i927r" thread... but link is death, so, could not download it.
- Downloaded the Android Terminal Emulator (Jack Palevich) and enabled USB debugging under application: I've checked I find files under /efs, but I have no permissions to read them (cat /efs/imei/mps* => Permission denied ; also su command is "not found") => I believ reason is I'm not root, so, I can't backup my efs neither from the EFS professional (gives me message "Your device is NOT Perm rooted" and exits) neither from the su commands commented in the other thread:
-------------
su
busybox cp -a /efs /sdcard/efs/
su
busybox tar zcvf /sdcard/efs/efs-backup.tar.gz /efs
su
cat /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 > /sdcard/efs/efs_dev-block-mmcblk0p1.img
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p1 of=/sdcard/efs/efs_dev-block-mmcblk0p1.img-------------
So, this is where I'm now, please, let me comment the steps I plan to follow and the doubt/question I have on each step:
1.- I believe I just got stuck due to the dead link "Rogers rooted based rom"... Could you, please, point me to a link where I can find the "Rogers rooted ROM"?
2.- Once I get this ROM, I'll follow the steps on the "[GUIDE] Rooting the Samsung Captivate Glide i927/i927r" to root the phone... But do I need to load the "CarrierIQ FREE kernel" on the phone, or maybe I should skip it (as I understand this SW is just to remove the AT&T Spyware, and my mobile is Rogers)?
3.- I'll load the "Rogers rooted based rom" and wil get acces to "su" commands and will be able to backup my /EFS directory, either by command or by using the EFS_Professional_2.1.73... it looks easier to use the EFS Professional, but, do you think the "su" commands are more reliable? (mainly, I'm not sure how to restore the efs after using the commented "su" commands)
4.- After efs is backuped, I'll flash the I927UCLJ3_I927ATTLJ3_ATT file (AT&T firmware fom 2012 October). At this point I'll have the AT&T firmware but no EFS information.. Could you, please let me know if my phone will boot at this moment, or will be hung ad I'll need to follow some steps to boot it and restore the EFS?
5.- Once phone boots, I'll restore the efs backup with efs_professional (or... which commands should I use to restore the previous backups?)
6.- Voila... hopefully, at this moment, I'll have upgraded my phone! :good:
Sorry... I know I look scared... I just have this phone now... :fingers-crossed:
THANKS!
Link to Rogers rooted SGH-I927R tar file
Hi all;
I'm placing here the link to download the Rogers rooted ROM, as I've needed lots of research to find a non-broken link:
http://narod.ru/disk/52937282001.f14...D.tar.bz2.html
You can download the SGH-I927RUXKJ5_STOCK_ROOTED.tar.bz2 (290.298.391 bytes, containning SGH-I927RUXKJ5_STOCK_ROOTED.tar) (After lots of reading, it looks like the correct ROM (I read in different places about the file size, and this one matches the expectations).
In order to upgrade, I've understood it's first needed to root the phone, so, although I've received great information in this thread, here I'm posting a couple of links with "step by step" instructions and "pictures" to root the phone (I'm a newby... need to be sure of each step):
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/root-captivate-glide-rogers-and-att/
http://www.androidtotal.com/root-samsung-captivate-glide-sgh-i927-sgh-i927r/
I hope this helps someone and makes things easier! :good:
I plan to root my SGH-I927R this week... Will post how it has gone... (hope not to open a new "under panic" thread)....
Cheers!

there is a link in my thread showing you how to root (if your on 4.0.4) here it is if you missed it:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cn879wTAXi4 (not my video)

Uhmmm... When I downloaded the file, I passed the Avast antivirus to the file and received no warnings... WIll do it again just in case, although looked fine...
Regarding the link... Whow!.. It's death now!!! (I downloaded the file 2 days ago)... Ok... WIll look for a place to put it (can't attach here due to size)... If someone needs it in the meantime, please, just let me know and will find a way to share it.
I found your instructions to root, and look great... but I'm still on Android 2.3.5, so, can't follow them yet as they are for 4.0.4... I plan to root my phone on 2.3.5 this week-end following the instructions shown, then, next week, backup EFS, upgrade to rooted 4.0.4, and restore EFS... let's hope I don't brick it...
Please, let me ask you a silly question... What is TWRP and CWM ??
(from your comments it sounds as important to keep in mind... )
Thanks!!!
Were all new at one time its okay lol
CWM (Clock Work Mod) and TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project) are custom recoverys to install ROMs from. A recovery is an environment outside of android that allows you to tons of modifications. We say use TWRP because it is better and supports KitKat. BTW you don't have to Restore your efs unless it is corrupted, which is very very rare.So if you didn't root yet you can just use Samsung kies and officially update to 4.0.4 then venture off to a custom ROM
(Just have a backup of your efs and restore if your IMEI is null-meaning not there- settimgs>about phone>status)
It is very unlikely that you'll brick your phone if you follow everything right

Really Thanks!!!!!
I thought I couldn't go to the 4.0.4 directly, as my mobile is from Rogers, and the 4.0.4 version was from AT&T... I read previously in this thread that the AT&T ROM will overwritte the EFS, as AT&T points to it in a different way than Rogers...(That's why I need to root now, just to make a bakup of the EFS, if not, then, I'd go directly for the 4.0.4...) Do you think I can go for 4.0.4 directly, by flashing the I927UCLJ3_I927ATTLJ3_ATT (AT&T firmware fom 2012 October) (I tried this update using Kies initially, but got error saying my phone does not support initializing).
Please,. let me ask you one more question... I've just learnt now about TWRP... but... how do I use this TWRP recovery? (I was planing to flash the rooted tar file, and then the 4.0.4 ROM with Odin 1.85 software, just by entering the phone in Download Mode (holding Volume Up key (keep holding it until options screen are shown) and then pressing power key once). On the next screen, pressing Volume Up once to boot into download mode)... But it looks to me that this might not use your commented TWRP recovery, as you suggest...
Where in this process should I use the TWRP? (or better explained... "how"?) Do I need to flash/load any file before my planned process to use this TWRP recovery mode???... and if so, is it any TWRP specific file for the SGH-I927R (Rogers) ?
Sorry... I feel I'm asking too many basic questions...
Really appreciate your help... I realize I have lots to learn before going to 4.0.4... (I like my mobile, would like to brick it... :angel
Thanks!!!
I'll try my best to make sure you don't! So if your using the Rogers version are you on Rogers network?
You flash Firmware from Odin the last and latest version is 4.0.4 we say update so you can have your modem upgraded (I hope this makes sense )
The phones are exactly the same the only difference is branding. I don't see why the att version wouldn't work, flash with Odin 3
Now once you've upgraded just flash the TWRP.MD5 the same way that guy did.but if you feel more comfortable flashing CWM and flashing TWRP zip after that to switch your recovery go right ahead
TWRP allows you to back up your phone and flash ROMs, mods, fixes ect. Its also touch based (I'll find a screen shot so you'll get a better idea )
EDIT:Heres a shot of the recovery (its the same on our cappi)

Thanks. thanks, thanks!
I'm not on Rogers network: I free the mobile and run it from the Spanish Orange network.
I can't do it today, but will read very slowly all the information, and will look for the TWRP.MD5 file valid for my mobile... then, i believe this week-end I'll do the big step... will let you know the result!
PS I've found in your link a file called trwp2.6.1.odin.zip containing the file recovery.tar.md5... probably this is the TWRP.md5 file you refer, right????
thanks!

IMEI that looks right is not my IMEI T999L

So being careless, I forgot to make a backup and no the phone's IMEI number is not the original one on the back.
I've spent the whole day/night reading and grabbing files, modifying the QCN, restoring it, but I've failed so far.
It's my sister's phone I fudged up and I'd really like to fix it.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Please and thank you, I'm very desperate to fix it back /:
Model: T999L
4.3
Have you re-flashed 4.3 firmware with re-partitioning ? Make sure to use correct .PIT file. Create the QCN file after that.
Follow this guide. Yes I know its VZW. The fundamentals are same.

imei lost no backup (off course)

Hi ,
I lost my imei number with a wrong flash. I already flashed a couple of stock roms in hope I got the imei back but no luck. I have no backup and i was wondering if someone has a solution for me. I had this with my galaxy s2 also and someone send me an efs. tar file and it magically worked…. Pls someone have this magically efs file!
I remember somewhere in s4mini was a thread about restoring imei from a secondary partition or something all you needed to do is some commands in terminal emulator or adb
