I havent been able to watch an hd video without having to constantly refresh even on 120mb wifi. It happens with every website and app 480p and below streams fine. Stock 5.0+ touchwiz plays hd with no problems but any other rom like CM, Dirty Unicorn, or touchwiz based roms wont play. Other 4.0+ roms also play hd just fine. The only thing ive found online is to change to an alternate video player in the dev settings but that didnt work. Also full mkv bluray rips play fine on my phone. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Quick question for you gentlemen regarding video playback. I have some 720p mkv files on my media server and am having issues playing them back on any ics rom. They play perfect on nearly any player on touchwiz and flawless on vplayer in hardware mode on cm7. Anyone have any ideas on what I could do for cm9 to have the same playing capability? I hate touchwiz but the camera and video work flawless on it and seems like it may be the best bet for me atm.
have u tried flashing some of the other kernels?

That won't matter

As marc said it doesn't matter but yes I have since I like to play with most major roms and kernels released. About to test miui b1 in a bit but I doubt it'll make any difference still I was just hoping a dev had some insight on this.
does cm9 not do hw decoding?
the option is greyed out on mine
on vplayer it allows the option and seems like it tries. mx player not so much. not having much luck with vlc either.
That's weird because they work fine over here on mx player.. did you search mkv video player in the market

well again ill say I've tried mx player (with codec packs and without(, the latest vlc nightly, and I own the pro version of vplayer. I tried with vplayers old codec packs and its built in. hw displays 0 picture with vplayer and stutters heavily on vplayer. the isn't that it can't play the file, the issue is it doesn't play it as it does on cm7 and tw. these are 720p video files with fast action. and not anime stuff.
vplayer works great on cm7 but doesn't play in hw mode on cm9. the stock video player on tw works best, but vplayer also works on tw pretty well too. mx is lame sauce.
i get a no picture on vplayer also
the video im using doesnt have any weird encoding options either; its just a video i downloaded off of youtube, so pretty standard
is this just a bug with cm9? maybe it needs to be reported. i dont see anyone mention it in the tracker
Hi,
I was just curious as to why the Full HD 1080p videos (for e.g. H.264 trailers from Apple) refuse to play smoothly on any CM9 and CM10 custom ROMs (with Moboplayer, Acer Media), while the same videos play buttery smooth with the same players on the official stock ROM? Do I need to tweak any settings or install any add ons in the custom ROMs to enable such playback. I am assuming that it is a hardware-acceleration issue because the setting for software decoding in Moboplayer has been turned off. However, 720p videos play fine.
Thanks.

Never had this issue, 1080 plays fine for me. Is this over HDMI or doesn't matter, just always? I use dice player and occasionally mx player, both play OK for me.
Some are encoded differently then others so some may need a bump up in CPU frequency but most generally play fine at 1ghz with deadline. Of course this is my device with my movies on my build, any number of things vary between the files and roms and players used.

OMG Thanks.. DicePlayer works like a charm. :good: :good:  The files I use for standard video play testing are Apple Movie Trailers 1080p H.264 / AAC 6 channel MOV files.
Now I am observing a very interesting development in the latest CM10 preview. Acer Media and Acer Video Player won't even detect the MOV video files. MoboPlayer and MxPlayer detects the videos but shows laggy playback on the device screen as well as over HDMI.
Only DicePlayer plays them like a charm, without hiccups or lags and going to be the only player I will ever use from now on. I think the issue is probably some proprietary codec related because when I am on the official ICS ROM, all these players detect and play those same MOV files smoothly both on-screen as well as over HDMI ..
Glad it works for you, it seems to "force" hw decode more reliably then other players so far and seems almost infinite in what it will play. MX in fast software fills in where dice fails for me, which is rare. MX seems to handle web streams better though.

So I've been searching for about a day now for a solution to this problem. I've been trying to play MKV files on my phone, but every single player i've tried (mobo, mx, rock, vlc nightly, bs, dice, and vplayer) have been really stuttery and the audio desyncs massively.
It seems that most people are able to play MKVs but for some reason I can not get it to play smoothly at all.
Has anyone come across this and know a solution?
(the file I'm trying to play is a 720p h264 mkv with aac audio. I would put up all the file information if I knew how, so I can if someone shows me)
I'm really sorry if there is an answer to this somewhere, but I tried a search here and only got a thread talking about how everyone can play MKVs smoothly
Are you running a stock Rom or one of the aokp or cm roms? With stock I haven't had an issue with any mkv even on my previous sgs and sgs2. Are all mkvs having problems or is it just the one ?

dude i can stream mkvs without problem
mx player by turning the software decoding on in settings
or vlc player beta
It seems like it only happens on 10bit MKVs. MX Player is the best with software decoding but there are still some dropped frames. I saw a video of someone playing 10bit perfectly fine and a thread saying the S3 can handle 10bit so I'm not exactly sure whats wrong.
I'm running TuchMi 5.0 so I might try to go back to full stock just to see if that helps.
I would try the VLC beta but US can't get it from the play store and the nightly crashes constantly for me.
EDIT: full wipe didn't help
make sure you got the 1.7 update, for me the audio would get out of sync on any anime but with H/W+ that is now solved and i got back DTS thanks to custom codecs.
Software is horrible for me it plays fine, but everything gets artifacts and colored blocks etc. At first i though it was the device that god it wasn't
I have 1.7. H/W+ works for you? it keeps telling me that I can't play the video with it. Can you give an example of and episode that works for you?
Actually I'm curious about this too. Just tried to stream Planet Earth from my PC and I had huge lag because if you are streaming on MKV it uses software decoding...
To be fair I might have to push up my VSEL values...but I really doubt that's the case. Another thing I'm going to try is PS3media server which TRANSCODES (meaning your computer does the coding) for all media files...so it is streaming everything converted for your phone. The annoying thing about it though is that it won't automatically start with my computer
A third alternative is to setup a vlc media player server.
I used to use diceplayer, it was my favorite and it played almost everything with HW support, but since I installed CM10 Jelly Bean on my glide, it just cannot play some of my videos (especially 60fps or HD videos). (Yea, I downloaded the tegra 2 plugin, too).
I also tried mx player with its arm v7 plugin, and so far it is the best for jellybean, however, HW accelleration doesnt always work with it either, but SW decoding seems fine.. Why does video playing suck on jellybean? on ICS it was perfect :\
is it the players (they simply dont support HW that much, they're not updated well?), or is it jellybean itself?
What videoplayer have you found as "best working" on JB?
MX player. I am on android 4.2
Simply the best player.

i use VPlayer. seems to have all the proper codecs i need to play any and all video format i throw at it, including mkv files.
however, there is some fine tuning you must do to correct the video/audio sync issues when it plays mkv files.
i have the unlocked version which i bought when it was on sale via the google play store.
No problem on hardware acceleration in CyanogenMod 10 Beta 2. I have some HD video in the phone and it plays them fine, whilst Android 4.0 refuses to do very much in frame sync. Jelly Beans is much better, IMHO. I have no trouble with MX player on this firmware.

So what happened from any of the custom stock ROMs including the rooted stock ROM to this ROM?
I'm asking because when I first got this phone I didn't root or ROM it and it had hardware decoding for my full length mkv movies. And they played just fine in the native video player. No shipping or slide show and no out of sync audio. When I first rooted and keep a rooted stock ROM on it. Everything was still fine. I tired fre3 ROM and it was fine. Jellybomb was also fine. But they didn't have working tethering always crashed. So I moved to this ROM. And now I no longer have working hardware decoding for mkv.
Why is that? What is the difference between this custom ROM than a rooted stock ROM? Is there a way to add it back in so that it can be played natively?
Thanks in advance

Liquid smooth is AOSP and all the other roms you mentioned are Touchwiz (based off of stock).
Yes I understand that. However that really has no bearing on what I'm asking. I guess what I'm asking, if I can make it clearer. Is why was mkv removed from the native video player. The native play that comes with android not TW not SENSE but android. It has direct access to h/w decoding for all formats it supports.
http://developer.android.com/guide/appendix/media-formats.html
This way you don't need a third party player to play these formats. This way it can be played natively with the android player that comes with every version of android regardless of the OEM and their silly UI.
That's all I was asking. If a developer of Liquidsmooth could answer or let me know they're looking into it. That would be great.

If you want an answer from a developer, then you should ask in the developer thread for LiquidSmooth.
