[Q] Default partition table of Ace 2 - Galaxy Ace II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello fellow Ace 2 owner,
after years of flashing a lot of ROMs and Kernel and repartitioning the Ace 2, I finally bought myselfe a new phone.
But don´t worry the Ace 2 stays alive, since my mother will use it. Before she can use it proper I would like to set it up completely from scratch.
I guess I messed the partition tables a little bit up.
Does anyone of you have the default factory partition table? If I would have these informations I could easily repartition the phone and flash the stock rom.
Thanks a lot in advance.
Greetings caesar

No need to know the partition table.
You just flash 3-part GB stock ROM(It has THREE thingsIT,CODE and CSC)(or JB,my CHINA firmware doesn't have 3-part JB stock ROM,and I don't know your firmware)from ODIN
It will set partition to default

[Q] Newbie questions about DHD rooting and memory

Hi,
I'd be really grateful to anyone who can answer my newbie questions.
I'm looking to follow the guide to downgrade my non-network-branded (i.e. sim-free) Desire HD, so I can permanently root it. Then I intend to follow the other guide so I can still update to the latest official release. My primary requirement for rooting is just so I can make complete backups of my phone's state in future. Though I'll probably play about with other community ROMs too!
Sorry if answers to my questions are elsewhere, and feel free just to point if that's the case. I've searched but haven't found definitive answers. Knowing these things will increase my understanding. Although I'm used to tinkering with things a little am in no way a programmer and my last phone was a Nokia E65!
1) Please can someone list the different parts of the phone's memories, including which are impossible to write over and which are. E.g. my understanding is:
--One flash chip with:
- 'bootloader', which to me sounds like a PC's BIOS or the kind of app you can boot into on a standard desktop PC when choosing which OS to boot into;
- factory image partition;
- separate partition for over the air updates;
- 1GB partition for user-writeable memory for things like apps installed on the phone, contacts, etc.
--Physically separate 'radio' chip that can be overwritten (I don't understand the difference between this and the OS though)
--RAM;
--microSD card.
2) After following the two guides mentioned above, will I still be able to receive over the air HTC updates in future? And if not, does that mean I'd be relying on the community to make available any official updates? I bought my DHD through an official UK retailer.
3) After following the two guides mentioned above, will it still be possible to restore my phone to its factory state in future, e.g. for resale or sending back to HTC, so everything that we unlock ('eng s-off', 'radio s-off', etc., which fries my brain right now) is locked again? If so, can a guide to this process be linked to?
4) I understand it's possible to switch between custom ROMs easily. When this is done, does that mean all system settings, such as phone contacts and app settings are also switched, or are these settings written to a different part of the phone memory?
I'll be sure to thank (and donate) for your time. Many thanks in advance as well!
Hi, I just bought the DHD 3 weeks ago and it is still difficult to understand to understand all this android stuff sometimes
1) I was a little lost at the beginning too, I don't know if this is what you are looking for but this is what I understood.
There are 4 flashable "things" :
- ROM OS (android OS)
- Linux Kernel (linux kernel)
- ROM radio (another ROM that manage ONLY the hardware stuff like 3G, Wi-Fi, bluetooth, GPS...)
- bootloader (exactly like a bios) and contains a recovery menu (that can be flashed by clockworkmod for example)
The ROM radio seems independant and you can flashed it separatly from the other it doesn't bother. The last versions improve battery life or GPS startup etc...
The ROM OS (android) need to be flashed with the kernel otherwise you can have some problem (wi-fi or data network that doesn't work anymore...).
S-Off means security off and it is necessary to do it if you want to write a new recovery on the bootloader or flash a new radio ROM...
Ther is two kind of S-Off but I'm not sure of the meaning so I let you watch about it.
When you install through the official ways :
1 OTA : You need to have the official recovery from the bootloader otherwise it will NOT work (no OTA with clockworkmod)
If your phone is network-branded you need a goldcard here and/or superCID (I don't really understand here lol)
After the installation I think you keep the S-Off but you're not root anymore.
2 RUU : It will install/reinstall everything (ROM OS, kernel, ROM radio and bootloader).
It is even capable of reseting your CID (your not concerned here because your phone is non-network-branded)
If think you loose the S-Off (or ENG S-Off -> SHIPS S-Off), you're not root anymore...
If you want to keep S-OFF, SuperCID and ClockWorkMod you need to :
1 flash the ROM OS through the ClockWorkMod recovery -> update.zip (you can give it the OTA file .zip, it will only flash the ROM OS)
2 flash the kernel manualy with fastboot (you can also use the boot.img contain in your OTA file)
3 flash the ROM radio (there is the excellent tuto here on XDA about this)
2) OTA will not be possible if you want to use clockworkmod. I was a little anxious about that too at the beginning! But you can find the official
ROMS REALLY easily on XDA probably before your provider send it to you. And when you do everything manually, you can CHOOSE wich radio ROM you want,
you can do backup REALLY quickly with clockworkmod and you can come back (things you can't do if you use OTA)... The last point that confort me
in doing all of this is that you can download OTA but not install it to pick up the ROMs inside and the kernel ! I did it last week and my phone
is now running the two ROMS that was contained in the OTA file AND the kernel. This is why I'm not worried anymore.
3) I never tried to restore my phone to its exact factory settings but I think you can...
4) I don't really now. In my case, I decided to use Google for my contact too, so when I flash, a few minutes later I have all my contacts
I hope my english is not too bad for explainations like this
Hi poumpoum,
Firstly, thanks so much for taking the time to help. Your English is ten times better than my Française! If you've a PayPal account you'd like to Personal Message me, or just the name of your preferred charity, I'd like to say a little thanks that way too.
Okay: so I understand that doing these cool things to my phone means I won't be able to update it over the air. You've convinced me this isn't a problem because any updates find their way to the community.
I'm also convinced I can restore my phone completely to factory defaults due to this thread (the thread's for a different region but the principle still stands).
Thanks for clarifying the radio ROM shares the same physical chip as all the other memory (including the RAM actually, I found this out).
This thread also explained some of the jargon to me.
You're welcome

[Q] converting EC05 to EXT4

hey everyone. i consider myself to have decent knowledge of rooting, flashing, etc. but im at a bit of a snag and was hoping someone could help enlighten me.
so...time for a prelude to where im at now: i was on stock EB13 before and rooted using the one click method (removed sprints "hillbilly" bloatware and such but didnt go to a custom rom). i never attempted to transfer to EXT4 at this point in time because i was unfamiliar with the process and knew the EC05 update was right around the corner. once EC05 was released, i updated using odin and a version of EC05 that was pre-rooted and didnt require a cache wipe.
now that im here(and dont see another version coming from sprint/sammy anytime soon) id like to convert to EXT4(because to my understanding its quicker and more efficient than riserFS) and a custom rom(yay for removing carrier iq! and gaining other advantages aswell). here's the problem, the only way ive come across to convert to EXT4 is to odin back to EB13 and then convert. this seems like it would be quite an annoyance and was hoping and praying there was an easier way.
but me and all my newbishness seem to have confused myself as ive looked to see if there was another way to convert. my original understanding was that the way the process works: i convert my phone to the ext4 file system and this would then allow me to flash any roms with ext4 support afterwards. what ive read recently suggests that in order to get ext4, i flash an ext4 kernel/rom and that this is what converts my file system or do the changes at the same time or something like that.
could someone please clear this bit of fogginess up for me and then explain how to go about converting(and if its even possible on EC05)? thank you thank you
PS: also read that ext4 breaks some bluetooth functionality. is this true? and if so, is it only for eb13 or a stock rom or something?
Um u can use the one click Clockwork mod 3.0.0.6 stickied in the development section, its identical to the one click root mod although it will make you ext
Just follow the instructions
Also remember to have an EXT4 compatible ROM to flash. My Bluetooth works fine. There were some issues on EB13 that have been fixed.
BONSAI 4 and loving it!

[Q] Custom MTD partition sizes?

Hello!
New Arc S owner here, coming from a HTC Desire.
One nice feature we had available for the Desire was changing the MTD partition sizes, either presets coming with HBOOT images, or custom ones, using a modification of Firerat's patch:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=806321
Now, after removing all SE bloatware from the ROM I flashed, I'm left with over 200MB on /system, and 90MB on /cache, and I'm sure a lot of people are in the same position.
It's a shame seeing all that free space go to waste, if you ask me
So... Does anyone know if / how we could get custom MTD partition sizes on the Arc, as well?
I browsed through the threads in the Development section, but couldn't find anything relevant. I'm afraid I don't have the necessary skills to do this, but maybe some devs will be willing to look into it.
Thanks!
That would be very useful! As you said, 200 MB on system and 90 MB on cache is a very big waste of space.

i just tried my g1's customMTD 1.5.9, it acted like it worked, but the partition sizes didn't change.
maybe its cuz we don't have a real recovery partition. arc's ICS cwm is built inside its kernel/boot i think

How to update rooted HTC Desire and keep the root?

hey guys
I've been looking for an answer for this question for 5 hours but wasn't able to understand what the next step should be.
My Story (not necessary)
I've successfully rooted my HTC Desire (which was a pain because I had to downgrade my phone first and root it with unrevoked on Ubuntu 10.04). I thought the latest version would be supported, actually it didn't change anything! (well it's rooted now after all...)
I was looking for the best method to update the Desire without loosing root. After hours spent on google looking for an answer
I wanted to know:
The best method to update an HTC Desire without loosing root. As far as I understand gingerbread was the 2.3 release and Froyo all the earlier releases.
Where do I get it?
How do I install it?
thanks in advance!!
ps: All methods from 2009 and 2010 wouldn't work for me.
my specs:
Firmware Version: 2.1-update1
Baseband Version: 32.41.00.32U_4.08.00.09
Kernel Version: 2.6.29-0cfb9f166
[email protected] #1
Build number: 1.21.405.2 CL174215 release-keys
Software number: 1.21.405.2
Update using a custom ROM (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=628 for all the threads containing these ROMs, and a how to). I use sebastiaan15's Runnymede AIO which is a Gingerbread with HTC Sense 3.5 ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1315961) but there are plenty of others on there, depending on what you want. You will keep root, as the Custom ROM will be rooted.
thanks for your quick answer! it really helped me getting a good overview!
still I have one more question:
that means that every custom rom is rooted?

I suppose technically it would be possible for a Custom ROM to not be rooted, but there aren't any that I am aware of, or have ever installed, and I can't see why a dev would produce a non-rooted ROM.
I'd recommend 4ext recovery (install it via the market), so you can take a full ROM backup. That way if you don't like a Custom ROM that you flash, you can just revert back to exactly where you were beforehand. Even if the new ROM won't boot, you can just boot into recovery and restore.
Also, a good idea to use Titanium to do a backup, so that you can then restore your user apps when you're on your new ROM. DON'T restore system when swapping from one ROM to another, or it may very well mess up your new ROM.
Hope that helps. I went through all this, and had all these sorts of questions a couple of months ago, so happy to help you work through it.

wow thanks, when I first watched the introduction video I thought I wouldn't get that much and awesome help here
There is still a question bothering me:
Concerning SD formatting, there are some guides which say that it is possible to create "virtual ram" by adding a linux swap partition at the end of the sd card, is that actually true? or does that also depend on the rom?
does that really help? (I know that having an ext4,3,2,1 depends on the rom and is used for app2sd)
thanks so much for helping me guys!!

You need to have a swap partition with some ROMs (swap partition is not the same as ext partition!). Select ROMs you like the most and read the first posts really carefully. All usefull info are there! Once you have selected the ROM you want to install, prepare your card accordingly, flash the ROM and ENJOY!

Hi, I've not found I'd ever need any extra RAM, so I've never bothered with a ROM that needs it. In my humble and limited experience I've not seen any that need a swap partition. An ext partition on the other hand is very useful, as you can install more apps. My sdcard for all 4 ROMs that I often use (Seb15's Runnymede, CM7, Stock Froyo and ICS Beta) just has a 1Gb ext4 partition (for apps2sd) and the rest fat32.

[q] need help on flashing a custom rom

Hey guys, frankly im a noob.. Im running on a stock ICS, stock kernel on my Sony Ericsson Arc.. running really slow and I have decided to flash a custom rom onto it for the first time. I need your help guys on where and how do I start the process.. there are a few que i have in mind such as
1) do i need to unlock the bootloader of my hp?
2) there is something called internal sd..and im so not sure what is it actually.. the arc doesnt have an internal storage like the galaxy s2 and etc as to my understanding..so what does it mean by i have to copy the zip rom files onto the internal sd?
3) i thought of flashing cyanogenmod 9 onto the arc but i would like to ask on your opinion on the rom and what would your choice of rom be?
hope to hear from u guys soon...thank you in advance..
well bootloader (e.g the BIOS settings in our computers) is just like the police officer that controls which programmes should start, what should run etc. although unlocking your bootloader will void your warranty however, it can be relocked by ways, our dev's have shown.
NEED---- it will help you install (also known as flash) custom (your own) kernels (interacter between software and hardware) and roms (interacter between humans and softwares). thus you will be able to customize anything and everything. and without the risk of bricking (make it no more useful thn a brick) your phone
well u must have read xmooded 90.5 rom requirements hence you must have been asking this, i dont know what that means but the externel sd card even works superb with that rom.
lastly i would suggest you use jj'shybrid rom with stock kernel and cwm installed. it is as good as cm9 in ui and almost the best in battery life (battery drain is about 0.2% per hour when idle)
hit thanks if i helped you
