Fingerprint for screen lock - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Any option to lock screen with fingerprint?

only to make sure I understood you right:
You want to lock your Screen by pressing your fingerprint at the sensor?
So it's the opposite of the normal use?

i'm pretty sure it's meant as additional functionality. touch to wake/unlock as usual, touch again to re-lock the phone. this way you could completely avoid using the power button, apart from actually powering the phone. i imagine that behaviour would come in quite handy, especially if you just quickly want to check it for notifications/time and could avoid the at times awkward 'touch to unlock -> adjust grip -> press power button' order with 'touch -> touch again'.
nothing huge, honestly feels like an oversight to me, that there isn't an option for something like this.

Yap, just as you said, It's meant like add, func. to lock screen like unlock.
Instead of DT2lock with "lock screen app" It would be very handy to lock with FP ...

I think a reason why that was excluded as a feature is because you naturally place your index finger there while talking. It would end up locking your phone accidentally more often. It's like the dimple on the back of the Motos.

Double tap to lock wake
This is believed to already be implemented in ElementalX kernel and I believe an option in greenify app!

Thanks, I know for DT2W and DT2Sleep, but I was asking something else.

i personally haven't experienced a single task during which my finger(tip) lays on top of the sensor, apart from unlocking of course. also there would always be the option of implementing a toggle for an additional functionality like this, the 'double-tap power for camera' feature is a great example for this.

Disabling gestures & keeping DT2W

Hi,
I like the new gestures feature, but I dont need all of the swiping and it just turns on my screen by itself when it's my pocket. I'd really like to keep double tap to wake though as its very useful.
is there any way to disable the rest of the gestures while keeping double tap to wake? I'm rooted if that helps.
thanks.

Gestures do not work when its in your pocket unless there is light in your pocket. Proximity has to see light to enable gestures, not to mention needing motion to wake up gestures. Other than that, you can flash one of the high end roms as they give you full gesture selection and you can change and disable specific ones.

Well, no idea about that, but it's not uncommon for me to take it out of my pocket and find the screen on. Happens rarely yes, but it does happen.
Is there any particular ROM you can recommend? I value battery life above all else.
Thank you!
You could try ElementalX 0.11 or 0.12?

ViperOne M8 allows full control of all gestures.

Sorry that I am replying to an old thread, but I've noticed that my recently acquired One M8 is somewhat random responding to DT2W and the post by an0ther seems relevant.
The gestures do respond better in light conditions, however I've found that lightly pressing the top of the phone, in the proximity detector area, between thumb and forefinger and then immediately doing DT2W the phone wakes up even in the dark. Is this just my phone or possibly a general characteristic?
I have the ElementalX kernel installed. Also I have a One M7 with ElementalX and the gestures always work day or night.
Any ideas why the One M8 should respond in this way?

Fingerprint sensor shortcut

Hi,
Is there any way/app to use fingerprint sensor as a shortcut launcher?
For example, double press fingerprint to launch camera....etc
Thanks,
Jack

That would be interesting, but you do know double pressing the power button is the camera shortcut

I do know that but power button is a lot harder to press than fingerprint sensor....
Don't you feel that?
cool idea but would probably cause a lot of unintended triggering

This would be awesome. Huawei is doing something like this, I believe, a swipe down on the fingerprint reader will bring down notification. I like the idea of a double tap or swipe to launch camera. or any shortcut. You could even get advance with it and do tap patterns for multiple shortcuts.
I could see devs interested in this being a feature in their Roms. I do not believe false reads will be an issue for a scan of the finger should still be required. Randomly touching the sensor with your skin should not activate it.
Fingerprint has so much potential for many uses but so far I feel the big sensor is wasting a lot of space on our phone and only thing it does is unlock.
I have wear so if Google allows smart unlock to skip lock screen, I don't even use fingerprint sensor at all.
It'd be really cool if they let you use it as a mini-trackpad. Imagine scrolling up and down a page without touching the screen.

This is even more interesting.
The funny thing is those sensors allow that kind of feature, they call it navigation mode.
However it appears that this mode is not enabled.

Gestures for fingerprint sensor

Hi all,
I moved from oneplus 5 to 5t and the lack of hardware buttons is really bothering me. I don't like the software buttons at all. So is there a way to make gestures for the fingerprint sensor ( like swipe down for notification bar). For example double tap to go to home screen and swipe left/right for back/forward.
It's already there, the swipe down for notifications, controlled by the finger print sensor.

Yes I know that but I am asking for double tap or hold or swipe left or right. And maybe change the swipe down to something else then notifications.

It requires FingerprintGestureController API which is only available in Android Oreo
https://developer.android.com/refer...lityservice/FingerprintGestureController.html
I would like to see 'long-touch to take a photo' gesture work in every app that takes photos, like 3rd party cameras, messenger, snapchat etc.
Anyone knows where can we suggest/request this? Is this even possible?
Hi, I'm asking here instead of opening a new thread. I'm not an expert but I managed to get what I wanted after hard reasearch, but I don't want to spend hours before knowing it can be done or not.
I see that OP5t can open notification with swipe down on the fingerprint scanner or take a photo when holding the finger on the scanner. And this works without me having to register my fingerprint. What I'd like to achieve is using swipe on fingerprint sensor for scrolling content (a chrome page or other apps, like ebook reader) without registering my fingerprint. This is because I really don't use fingerprint at all (I actually never lock my phone in any way) yet I'd like to use the fingerprint scanner as long it is there (it's completely useless for me, right now).
I couldn't find anyone who did this and I don't want to spend hours learning how to do all of this and then find out it can't be done as I want. I even got tasker but can't find a "fingerprint swipe" variable. I saw several apps for fingerprint scanner gestures but: 1. they don't let me "scroll" pages and 2.they all ask for registering my fingerprint.
Summing up: I want to know whether you can add gestures to the fingerprint scanner. Is it possible without registering my fingerprint? If so, is it possible to assign swiping "scroll" as gesture?

Hey absolute85!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.catalyst06.fingerprintactionpro
I use this app for fingerprint gestures. It doesn't have a lot of support, probably abandoned, but gets the job done. The only bugs I have is the slight lag for single swipe actions when you enable double swipe gestures but that too is understandable because the app is waiting to see if there's a second swipe. I haven't really tried it without registering a fingerprint but it shouldn't have an issue. Might be worth shot!

Thank you for your answer. Yes, that's very close to what I'm looking for. However I should buy the pro version, but I'd like to know if you can give some feedback about that. Using "swipe on screen" commands performs a swipe starting from the edge. So, for instance, when it performs "swipe screen down" it opens notification panel. I see there's "scroll", but I'd like to be sure that it works properly before purchasing it. Moreover it would be nice if it is sensitive so that if I swipe halfway it scrolls less than if I swiped all the way down with my finger (I hope you understood). Anyway it's already useful, I can use it at least on my e-reader up with swipe left and right on the scanner, thanks.

I don't really use those PRO features so never found the need to upgrade. Although had the dev been more active I might have just done it to support him. You can always buy it and if not useful claim a refund no? I think that policy extends to this. I'm not sure though. Glad I could help!
Thanks. Anyway I noticed that after installing it I had a change on chrome. When I open new tabs I see them as a list instead of little windows (like the multitasking for apps). When I uninstall it, everything goes back as before. Is there any setting in chrome to restore?

Is double tap to turn off screen possible

As the title suggests is it possible to double tap on empty area of Home Screen to turn the phone off just like we use Double tap to wake the phone.
This was an inbuilt feature on Asus Zenfone 5z and seems counter intutive to have only one option to turn the screen on and not off here.
Regards
One option; with Nova launcher
Yes, likely via custom ROMs.
Also, probably via custom launchers. Nova Prime allows double-tap to "lock screen". Double tap to "screen off" very likely via a specific 'Nova activities' option but I haven't figured this out yet.
EdXposed ---> install GravityBox ---> it's then possible to turn screen off via double-tap on lock screen or via double-tap on status bar.

You can use edge screen. SoftKey Edge. There is a lock option. It is not double tap but it works.
you can add the screen off icon at navigation bar with a samsung app called Navstar, with that you can single tap to turn off the screen
Good Lock - Navstar adds a navigation button to turn the screen off

You must have the prime license, in gestures&inputs there are multiple options to choose from, for each gesture you can choose any action available, you can even have the same action assigned to multiple gestures, I use one finger down to lock, and also double tap to lock

As i already have Nova prime, this worked perfectly. Thanks.
Nice just learned something new. Used nova star and added screen off and notification bar button. Now I have 5 buttons readily available.
Wish you could open and app with a button. That way I can reserve the power double tap for another app.

Feeling seriously numb right now. I've used Nova (Prime) for years, and never knew that was there. Searched all over for a good program to sleep/ lock. Found a very simply one (Screen Lock Widget 1.0) which is no longer available, but I have. Works great. No resources used. But having the ability in Nova is great.
So.....thank you for sharing that. It's the simple things in life.
It makes no sense why Samsung would give us the means to tap awake our screen but not add that option to turn it off.
That was a weird decision for not including double tap to sleep. It's like making an automatic car with clutch where the clutch is only used for the reverse lol.
Anyhow, this is by far the best app on the playstore that can put the phone sleep and still use the default One UI.
The nice thing about it is that you can also tap on the status bar to put the phone to sleep while using an app for instance.
Tripe tap on the home screen is recommended though, you'll understand why after using it for a while

I just tried Nav Star app from within Good Lock (From Samsung App store) and added 2 extra buttons.
Thanks to the user who recommended it earlier, now I can turn off phone as well pullbdown notification bar from the Navigation bar, if I can get used to these extra buttons I might as well keep them.
Yes software wise they do need to improve a lot of things here.
1. First Install Good Lock :
http://apps.samsung.com/appquery/appDetail.as?appId=com.samsung.android.goodlock
2. Then Install Nav Star : http://apps.samsung.com/appquery/appDetail.as?appId=com.samsung.systemui.navillera
Well, very useful indeed, but I prefer hiding the nav bar, just to avoid screen burn in and to get some more screen area

Question Start splitscreen mode when folded slightly?

Rather than flex mode, is it possible to start split screen mode when folded slightly? That would be so much more useful imo
Adding - i do see a couple options in Tasker for folding/hinge sensors. Has anyone given this a shot?
i believe the folding state depends on the phone sensor which we can't change without root
there is an option in bixby routines for the folded state: open/partial/closed
perhaps there is something there that you can use.

ahh after reading this post, i tested using any sensors, selected hinge sensor. i must say configuration using this is much cleaner than pervious approach. using multi launchers.
Just created a tasker profile to start split screen if I shake my device....works great and perfect for a foldable large screen device!
why not just hold down recent button?
shaking has a risk of dropping
