I have gingerbread on my evo 4g....
I'm in the process of trying to root my EVO solely to gain WIFI tethering access for my new TV.
I've read tutorials about rooting here and there over the past year but never felt like i quite got it, so i didn't do it. Well I decided to try it out with this guide:
it won't let me post the url, but it's the one on goodandevo for gingerbread
Everything went well with this process up until the Nandroid backup. I backed up I guess my current stock ROM?(although I don't know where to find it??) I then downloaded the "Wireless-N bug fix" rom and stuck it on my SD card. I then flashed it through my boot screen, then selected the zip......
and here is where i'm at:
1. booted into my phone, it looks completely unchanged(stock rom). HOWEVER, wifi antenna quit working.
2. i went into the boot screen and "s-off" shows so something worked?
3. when i try to install the wifi tethering, it says i'm not rooted.
OBVIOUSLY i'm doing something wrong. the article mentions Amon Ra Recovery as well as PC36IMG.zip and being the noob that i am as it relates to rooting, these mean nothing to me. any help is appreciated.
If you boot into recovery from the bootloader, do you see clockwork or a triangle and red ! ? If you see the latter, you have no recovery, and the amon_ra recovery can be found in the the development section [type it in the search], where you will get the PC36IMG and instructions on how to flash it. Then you can flash the zip in recovery. Also, if you download wireless tether from the market [free] you'll be set to tether.
i went into my bootloader and then recovery. the screen went to the "white HTC EVO" screen, then it loaded into a REVOLUTIONARY screen with this menu
-reboot system now
-apply update from sd card
-wipe data/factory reset
etc.
so you're saying a need the amon-RA and the pc36img.zip? will this fix the wifi antenna problem too? thx again for your help.

I believe the revolutionary is a form a clockwork and you CAN flash your wifi zip now, but you may get an error about amend scripting, ect. And amon_ra will be in the PC36IMG that you flash in the bootloader. From there, you will flash your zip, and you should be good.
i have now flashed 4.24.651.1-802.11n-fix-signed.zip twice from my REVOLUTIONARY recovery screen and it says it loaded successfully, but still won't load apps requiring root, AND wifi is still broken =(

The first part sounds like you don't have superuser installed, or the binaries didn't flash; it happened while I rooted a friend's thunderbolt.
1. download and install superuser from the market
2. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=682828 < download and flash the second zip in recovery [the froyo/eclair]
3. go into the superuser app, tap settings, then hit update, and it should be working
And the wifi broke after you flashed the zip?
ok. i flashed the pc36img.zip file and updated. also then reflashed the 4.24.651.1-802.11n-fix-signed.zip and WIFI radio still isn't working??
super bummer

I would recommend restoring your original backup, because it seems that the zip file broke your wifi, that's when it stopped working correct? Or try flashing a new stock rooted rom of that same firmware and try it again, because I'm sure the wifi driver was under attack.

ok tech roxxx. thx. can i restore to my original rom after being rooted? i've never restored, how is that done? i went into bootloader and then recovery, then restore and chose nandroid restore. it said it couldn't find the file?
stuff is confusing sometimes.
also, now that i placed the pc36img.zip on sd root file, everytime i go into bootloader it ask's if i want to update. is it okay to move that file? delete it? what's the way of handing it, and any other zip files for that matter in the root sd?

Sorry, I had to run out. That would be he correct method to restore. Though to handle the PC36IMG, you can delete it, or rename it to somethign else like PC36IMG_amon, so you know what it is for future use, if you ever had to flash the recovery again.
still no wifi? i tried restoring but it said it couldn't find the file?
tried flashing a new radio, but it still won't start up the wifi?
You should have a folder on your sdcard for backup... Not sure what revolutionary calls it... But it has to be there unless you moved it or anything. The recovery looks for an exact folder with exact file names so if anything changed it won't work.
On the wireless n fix, you shouldn't have flashed that as I believe wireless n is already a part of gingerbread... May be wrong but I never had to flash it. All you will need is wifi tether app from market.
At this point you may have to do a full wipe and flash a new ROM, granted you will lose all your data. However you can flash the new Sprint update, which I am on now and it is quite smooth.
Be sure your contacts are backed up to Google. If you have apps you want backed up get Titanium backup. Emails and texts will be gone, though i'm sure there is a way i've never really cared.
Grab this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1243320
Wipe everything in recovery except sdcard then flash the .zip you download from that link.
You will still have a mostly stock Evo but it's rooted with superuser already installed. Then get wireless tether app from the market.

thank you i'm her old man. i'm going to try what you've said now. i'll post back with results. as for my back up? i'm not sure where it went, and as long as it doesn't mess my phone up, i'm going to clean up my sd card a tad too. i don't think it will harm anything. never should have flashed that rom, goodandevo made it sound benign.
thanks again tho.
**UPDATE**
i downloaded titanium backup and i get an error that "superuser" has forced closed. something is a miss? i'm more than frustrated. i'm really not concerned with email's/contacts since they're all cloud based. what's the easiest way to get a clean root like what you have?? at this point i'd probably drive over my phone if someone said that's what it took....=/
in recovery it says:
wipe ALL usuerdata/factory reset
wipe cache
wipe dalvik-cache
wipe SDCARD (don't wipe this i right)
wipe boot
wipe system
wipe SDCARD (don't wipe this)
wipe SDEXT
wipe DATA: batttery
wipe DATA: rotate settings
i'm afraid to wipe "boot" and "system" those sound important. but i'm just doing what you've mentioned.

Yea you need those to boot into the system. Did you flash the rooted stock rom he linked you to, as that would be a quick fix.
Do wipe those they will be replaced when you flash the new ROM

i wiped them and it bricked my phone. luckily the manager at sprint was uber nice and gave me a replacement since i'd been a longtime customer.
i guess i have no business rooting my phone if i don't understand the process. i figured i'd root it now since evo 4g probably won't be getting anymore MAJOR android updates? but....maybe i should leave this one be.
are there any close to fail safe guides for "rooting for dummies?"
Revolutionary error message
Hello, I am new to the this forum. I did as the best I could to find a relevant forum to post this.
When I run revolutionary to root my HTC Evo 4G I get an error message that reads.
"Failed to communicate with existing ADB (Android Debugging Bridge) service"
I have the lastest SDK and everything downloaded.
Can anyone explain why this keeps happening? (Note: I am running this through vitualbox for windows 7 because my current OS is the windows 8 Developer preview and doesn't install the HTC drivers.
Any help on this would be very much appreciated. Thank you for your time

Ok, so I see a lot of guys who are new here and aren't adept with the flashing and rooting process and we're having too many threads based on it and the errors they keep getting. It's nothing wrong to not know certain things but only if the search function was used a bit more.
A few things you should keep in mind :
1> I know no one reads disclaimers anyways but don't blame me if you do something wrong. Follow the steps, they are easy and you're good to go
2> PM me with info, suggestions and tips to improve on this thread if I have missed out certain things. I want this to serve as a basic thread for newbies wanting to install CM7 so we don't clutter the General's with too many threads.

Backup contacts and messages and all other data that is important for you. There are many apps that can do that - Eg. Backup Master, Mobile Backup II, APN Backup and Restore, Backup to Gmail.
Here is a guide for you guys to install and flash the latest version of CM7 on your Wildfire S devices.
1> Bootloader Unlock
a) You can get an S-off using the XTC Clip. What's S-off? It's like a security lock. It could be in the on or off state. An 'S-off' allows you to modify almost everything on your phone. It's pretty costly in many parts so you can try the solution below (it's free)
OR
b) HTCDev method
The first step regarding Bootloader unlock is very important. Unless you do that, don't go forward on this. Here's a beautiful tutorial on how that's to be done.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1432199
2> Root & Recovery
Root will allow you to get Superuser permissions on your device. Didn't get it? Well, it's just like administrator privileges. It's basically just a one click solution so that's pretty easy
2a) Root the phone via this crazy one-click software:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1436426
2b) Once you're done rooting, you must have the app Superuser now. It's time to install CWM now.
1.Go to Google Play (Market)
2.Download and install ROM Manager
3.Open, click on Flash CWM.
4.Select Wildfire S
5.Let it do it's thing, click YES when it asks for SuperUser permissions
6.You should get a message that it's done successfully.
3> Download CM7 & Gapps
So we're getting at the heart of the tutorial now.
Download the latest nightly or stable build of CM7. There are a few ROM's but I'd personally recommend Alquez's
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1226765
Download the lastest version of Gapps so you can get Market running from here
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Latest_Version/Google_Apps
4>Place files on the SD card
So you now have 2 zip files with you. The CM7 zip file (around 90MB) and the Gapps zip file (around 6MB). Put both of these files on the SD card. Don't create folders, just place it in the root of your SD card.
5> Get into recovery
Turn off your phone. Now, this is the important part.
Press the Power + Volume Down button simultaneously. (if you can't get it working, disable fastboot under settings)
You'll see the white bootloader screen and something will happen for about 5 seconds (don't worry, you haven't bricked your phone ). It's just a normal P76img.zip search. After that is done, select the "Recovery" option using the volume down button and then pressing the power button.
6> Nandroid backup
Nandroid is by far the safest way. will hopefully get people in a good habit of using them!
nandroid is a backup of the exact state of your phone: apps, data, contacts, messages. it can be restored just in case anything goes wrong, and should always be used for flashing critical things like a new rom.
1. Go into cwm recovery. (Actually, you are in CWM recovery if you've done it correctly )
2. Select 'backup/restore' using volume keys and select with POWER button.
3. select backup
The back up will start, and will take around 5-10 minutes to complete
4. Once it is done, it will go back to the main cwm menu.
Backups are stored on SD card in clockworkmod/backup, and can be moved/copied to PC for ultimate safekeeping.
7> Wipe stuff
Congratulations, if you made it this far in one go
Easy stuff now.
Toggle using volume buttons and 'factory reset'.
Then 'wipe cache'.
Then go into advanced and 'wipe dalvik cache' and 'battery stats'.
8> Installing CM7
Now select 'install zip from SD card'.
Then select 'choose zip'.
Then select the CM7 zip file that you had placed on the root of your SD
Select 'YES' obviously
Let it do it's thing for about 4-5 minutes.
Once it is done, follow the same process as above but select the other zip file, that is the gapps zip file. Okay okay, I'll type it again
Now select 'install zip from SD card'.
Then select 'choose zip'.
Then select the Gapps zip file that you had placed on the root of your SD
Select 'YES' .
Then, go back. Reboot. Have a heart in mouth moment and then watch the CM7 logo show up in a few minutes. You've done it successfully. Congratulations

I want to leave a note.
If no matter what you do, some or all Google apps do not appear even though the flash has been reported as successful, try re-downloading the Gapps archive.
this looks good, particularly the clear layout
however i personally think that:
6> Nandroid backup
you've briefly covered backing up stuff earlier, but nandroid is by far the safest way. will hopefully get people in a good habit of using them!
you could put a note saying that nandroid is a backup of the exact state of your phone: apps, data, contacts, messages. it can be restored just in case anything goes wrong, and should always be used for flashing critical things like a new rom.
if you really wanted, this guide is actually not too far from being a generic guide to installing any custom rom. except that some need an sd card partitions (gparted recommended), so you would have an optional step 2a or something. maybe too complicated, just a thought, but good post so far!
EDIT : Added Backup part as well now.
Nice, just one thing, there is no need to reboot before wiping anything.they'll end up back in recovery anyway to flash a new ROM.
you could put a note saying that backups are stored on SD card in clockworkmod/backup, and can be moved/copied to PC for ultimate safekeeping.
This guide could become a stickie, just hope ppl use ur guide now...

hello everyone!
hardikrajgor123, thanks for a wonderful tutorial and links you provided. everything worked well for me, but i have one question.
i have a confirmation from htcdev method that my device is unlocked and i did install cyanogenmod (it works perfectly). my only problem is that my phone is still s-on and i cannot delete stack apps.
the way which appeared on one of the links (download root.zip, put it on sd card, run it on cwm) didn't work out for me.
anyone has any suggestions how to solve this?
thanks

Did SuperUser install on your phone? If you have root permissions, you can use Titanium backup and remove stock apps. If you're sure the root zip didn't work properly, try doing it again. Follow that tutorial carefully

Hello, thnaks for nice tutorial. Now i got stuck at installing CWM. I have S-ON and I've just unlocked bootloader via htcdev. Everything went fine, but when i want to flash clockwork mod recovery, it says: "Main version is older!".
I've tried all CWMs I could find here, but it does that with all of them.
I have:

HBOOT-1.09.0099

edit: Just to be sure, most recent version of CWM I found here is 5.0.2.6 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1213229)
So do I have to wait for new version of CWM or is there some way around? Thanks in advance!

Could you root successfully? There has to be superuser app when you restart rom. If you rooted successfully, download ROM Manager from Market.
Open app, Flash CWM. Select Wildfire S. BAM! CWM is installed, that is, the latest version 5.0.28
Delete the P76IMG.zip from SD Card then. Check if you can enter recovery.

No I couldn't. Acording to rooting tutorial, I need CWM first, and then launch rooting script in CWM. Now I noticed, there is some one-click software, but it requires S-OFF. I'm stil S-ON, just unlocked, will that work?

Update: So the super-simple one-click app realy rooted the phone (which really made me laugh ). So thanks for pointing me that direction!

Oh wish I'd had this info prior to do it blind for the first time, got it working tho.
So I finally managed to get CM7 working, maybe I can help you with updating this tutorial, as some things don't work anymore with newest firmware...
Steps, which worked for me, at start I had S-ON and 2.13.401.2:
1) Somehow get 2.13.401.3 (which is only one supported by htcdev). Some say, that OTA update worked for them (classic update via menu in phone). It didn't worked for me, so I used RUU update from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074445
2) Then htcdev unlock thing work fine, as you write in your tutorial.
3) Rooting was quite different, because current version of CWM can't be flashed via HBOOT, as it's version is too old.
So new rooting and recovery method, which is actually much more simple and work:
3a) Root the phone via this crazy one-click software: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1436426
(I still can't believe, that it was that easy )
3b) Restart phone, then go to market and download ROM Manager
3c) In ROM Manager, click the first item: Flash Clockwork Mod. It will do it's thing, and It's done. You have root and CWM installed, without even going to HBOOT. Cool right?
4, ...) The rest is same, as in tutorial on first page, so continue with step 3> there... (don't forget to backup all the time )
Hope, that will help...

1. Download the newest cm7 you want to flash.
2. Boot into recovery. (you can do this through rom manager but it is easier and better to do all things through recovery)
3. Wipe cache partition and dalvik cache ( dalvik is under the advanced tab)
4. Install zip from sd card/choose zip from sd. File should be in the folder marked download.
5. Choose the cm7 file and install.
6. Reboot
7. Flash Data2Sd Reinstaller from Recovery (you can find it in mindhacker's thread) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1432259
8. Reboot
Always backup though, this process is tricky. Works for some, not for others

Need some help here,
I recently followed these instructions, then somehow, all my contacts on my sim were wiped. Now, I can't even add contacts and put them on sim. Any help? I can call and text just fine though.
This was tough to get as LG locked down all known exploits with the ZVI release. It took some hardware hacking to pull a clean unmodified system and kernel. Here is a flashable zip:
http://jacobstoner.com/LS980ZVI.zip
This includes a bootstack with an older bootloader and TWRP 2.8.7.3. The ZVI kernel has been bumped to work with the older bootloader. Otherwise this is completely unmodified and unrooted so if you want root then flash SuperSU after flashing this.
http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu
Thanks for sharing, i am on cyanogenmod 11, can i install it with hybrid bootstack and blestagator's bumped twrp?
It will replace your bootstack and update twrp, but it will work fine.
Thanks, man! I wait for it so long! Because I'm still on ZVG because ZVI was unrootable. So all what I need is just clean flash room in recovery and install supersu app? Without any unlockers? Downloading now, making backups and give a try!

Yes, just flash in recovery and flash the supersu zip from the link above. You can dirty flash over ZVG, it will overwrite the whole system partition anyway.
Confirmed! If works! Just made clean installation 20 minutes ago & flash supersu.zip through recovery. Superuser works fine. So now I've try restore zvg & flash over it. Because I use lots of exposed modules & dorimanx kernel, titanium backup, lucky patcher, freedom etc. For this sw root is critical... Thanks a lot for latest ZVI + root! Later I link to your thread for peoples from russian 4PDA LG G2 thread. Lots of people will be happy!
ROM working well for me too. Thanks!
Not ever try to flash on installed rom! You'll receive a lots of lags after! Make app backup & flash "clean" install through recovery. I found also 1 issue in recovery: then screen goes off after you turn it on you see only blue-grey-black-white stripes with tiny squares. It happens not always but sometimes.
P.S. Previously I also used bumped 2.8.7.3 TWRP and has no problems. Also I use xposed, so when I flash ZVI on ZVG & restore apps backup has lots of lags like force close systemUI, deleted unworking software etc. So - clean install! After that - restore backup, but only user apps, not system like xposed apps, home g4 launcher, dialer etc.!
Rom
Its working fine ... but i am facing network lock issue...Kindly help

Dear i am facing sim lock problem.... Its showing Invalid sim card message...
SIM-unlock
Nomansabir: you need made sim-unlock again.
Download Wirking+Hotspot.zip. You must be rooted 1st. Install adbdinsecure2.00.apk, open it, accept root privileges, use checkbox "enable insecure adb" - exit apk. Connect g2 to pc, open simunlock.exe with admin rights, phone must reboot itself after correct installation. Voila: you phone is now sim-free!!!
P.S. You can delete adbdinsecure.apk after

Otherwise this is completely unmodified and unrooted so if you want root then flash SuperSU after flashing this.

that's wonderful, @jacob019, thanks for sharing this highly waited zip of the ZVI, as far as i am on cloudy G2 3.3 with my LS980 for a long time and have not experienced the stock firmware after ZVG.
I have two questions in my mind if you could please clear them.
1. Is there any problem in the ZVI like most of the LG updates have not been without bugs or lagging ?
2. Can i flash this zip directly from my already installed TWRP without going back to stock ZVG or ZVE? (I have Cloudy G2 3.3 installed with blastgator's boot stack/baseband) {Cloudy G2 v3.3 is indeed a perfect ROM for my LS980 till now}
Thanks again for the great job you have done

1. I've been using it for a couple weeks, seems quite stable but I'm a light user.
2. Yes, you can flash it directly from your already installed TWRP. No need for any other preparation.

Thanks @jacob019 for your time and again for your great job.
I will try it as soon as the download of the zip file will be completed.
And i also must try the SIM unlock as you mentioned above because i live out of US and am using GSM network not CDMA, so i think to do that i need some preparations.
I hope there are thousands in this line to need ZVI and the SIM unlock. Hail Jacob.
What is the flashing procedure by the way? is it same as we flash custom ROM (wipe system, devlock, cache and data) or just wipe dev lock and cache and flash the zip file
Just reboot to tarp recovery, choose wipe - advanced - check all except "sdcard" - wipe and just flash zip. Also better to flash supersuper.zip if you need root. Reboot - profit!
For me it works flawlessly, slight more battery drain, but solved by dorimanx kernel, xposed & greenify app. I didn't see the even mentioned lags in this Rom. Working for me the same as ZVG & also rootable!

@astherion, Thanks for the SIM Unlock files, by the way rooted is OK but but what is "after correct installation" is it what the software in PC does with the mobile or something else? And developer options have to enabled or otherwise?
Edited: Thank you very much guys specially @jacob019 and @astherion, you guys rock the party. The stock Lollipop is flashed perfectly and SIM Unlock was the most simple step i have every seen in the LG world, But astherion you should have mentioned the USB debugging option as it needs to be enabled before running the simunlock.exe from the PC, and an other thing i can see Hands free activation disturbs after every reboot (i have just rebooted twice and it cameup both times) and battery level also going very fast don't know why but, this can be a major issue which may force some people like me to go back to Cloudy. My battery was at 75% and 4 hours 12 minutes remaining and after i rebooted to recovery and wiped devlock cache and data, still battery says 69 % 3 hours 3 minutes remaining. This is dangerous, the battery graph is showing like a forward slash is on the graph panel, I will attach pics.
Indeed this all made me a fan of you guys,
So I am on ZVH, rooted with TWRP installed. Can I just flash the zip files?
When doing a clean install, are you just totting back to an earlier release(ZVE or G), rooting and installing TWRP and then this zip files?

Yes, you can just flash the zip file; should be no need to wipe data if you're coming from ZVG. Also there is no need to tot back to an earlier release unless you are already on ZVI because wiping data and installing this zip will produce just as clean of an install.
@talvigi, battery is okay for me; but I'm used to stock. I'm not sure about disabling activation because I'm using it on Sprint. I'm sure you can find info on how to improve both of those issues, but there isn't anything to be done here since this is an unmodified stock rom.
Sorry to beat a dead horse, I come from the nexus forums and haven't used a samsung device in a while. My friend has the Note 4 with MM on it. Is flashing TWRP as simple as just flashing it via odin with his phone as is? Does he need to complete any process first, before being able to flash TWRP via odin?
Thanks all!
Sprint Note 4 already updated to PD1? If latest update is desired, update it first.

The bootloader is already unlocked but the reactivation lock may have been locked by user. Goto to Settings/Security/Reactivation lock and disable it. You can also verify this while in download mode, the phone's display show reactivation lock disabled before your proceed.
Enable developer options by tapping build number in About device in Settings 7 times. Go into developer tab and enable USB debugging.
Using latest Odin and latest TWRP is recommended. You should only flash only the specified custom recovery for your device or the touch screen will not be accurate.
TWRP can be found in the original development thread.

Use AP slot and make sure the Samsung driver is installed; get that from Samsung support for Note 4. Make sure KIES and SmartSwitch is closed or uninstalled (may not work on rooted phone; manually backup files you wish to keep just in case). Run Odin as administrator; not required for Windows 10.
To flash, press the Odin exe, uncheck the auto reboot option, load the file using the AP slot, power down phone, hold the keys [volume down, menu and power] together until booted in download initial screen, connect the USB, volume up, verify your COM is connected and start. When you see the success, 0 failed, disconnect USB and pull battery, wait at least 30 seconds and replace battery and boot directly into recovery to ensure it sticks. Otherwise, you're back on stock recovery.
If swapping device owner, it's recommended to remove the Google account before factory resetting the device. Consider it as a good practice for all Settings menu selected factory resets. If you trip the factory reset protection circuit, you need to sign in with original Google account & password.
You can use Odin to downgrade to Android Lollipop 5.1 (most recent OK1 build recommended if going back to Lollipop) but you cannot use Odin to downgrade to Android 5.0 Lollipop or KitKat. The bootloader prevents lower security bootloaders from being installed.
Custom ROMs may remove ItsOn but may not remove it from root folder. Unless /carrier/ItsOn folder is deleted, you may suffer continual reboots if factory resetting device at some point. After following and verifying all the above, you may consider factory resetting, including wiping data, internal memory and Android folder in extSdCard to make a clean break with normal un-rooted conditions and Lollipop fragments on phone to prevent random reboots.

To get root after getting on desired update, whether it be current update, downgrading (be careful with downgrading; most likely you're only able to downgrade as low as Android 5.1 but that depends on your current bootloader) or upgrading, you flash TWRP and then you would do one of two things:
1) flash a pre-rooted ROM. Custom ROMs in our forum do this.
2) flash custom kernel and complete root with SuperSU zip. Both are flashed in recovery but both should be flashed before booting. Kernel first, then flash SuperSU zip and boot. You would also need to manually remove ItsOn and Knox.
Given the complexity of it, I'd suggest the custom stock ROM for you. The ROM should match your bootloader. I'd recommend stock, aka touchwiz ROMs. They're mostly stock and have less bugs and workarounds than others like CM.
We still don't have highly customized Marshmallow stockish ROMs but I don't think it will be long before we see them. By the time they're here, maybe you're ready.
Read the OP of the custom ROM. If you don't understand or need clarification, this thread is a good place to ask the question. Install this app to check your bootloader (baseband is relevant too):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vndnguyen.phoneinfo
Hint: make sure you're on the the recommended bootloader and baseband first. If you have trouble with TWRP flash sticking, you may not be unchecking auto reboot and pulling battery after successful flash and booting directly into recovery to make it stick properly. You have to wait at least 30 seconds after battery pull and boot directly into recovery.

damn thanks for this info! youre the man! you know ur stuff thats awesome. im confused regarding the kernel.. i just winged it tbh, i installed TWRP via odin. got it to stick, then flashed SUPERSU and got root. I made a full backup via twrp then i flashed a custom CM rom and it works awesome. i didnt do anything regarding kernels. My question now is, what is the easiest way to swap between roms?? Such as stock Rom to this New CM rom i have. Would i just create backups and restore when i want to switch??

You could make backups and factory reset before restoring. If you have issues restoring stock backups, wipe internal memory also.
You have to take care to read and adhere to changing trends with CM; they may not be compatible with Marshmallow baseband and bootloader yet but may even require a different kernel to run with Marshmallow bootloader and baseband. I'm not current on the latest and lack experience. Search the specific ROM threads for CM known issues, workarounds and trends.
As far as the kernel question, I did omit the fact you could flash SuperSU to patch the stock kernel; you didn't do any wrong there. I've abandoned use of stock kernel since Android 5.1 required an exploit to root. We didn't always have the boot image patch that SuperSU now includes. For some reason, users are randomly losing root with systemless root. If that happens, just flash SuperSU again; same version or higher should be OK.

Did you factory reset and wipe internal memory when restoring the backup?
Put your micro sdcard in a card reader and transfer it. If you're trying to transfer while in recovery, that currently doesn't work.
If you're trying to copy your TWRP backup to micro sdcard, the path should be: TWRP/BACKUPS/(your device s/n recognized by TWRP)/(TWRP Backup folder)
Without proper path, TWRP may not see the backup as official. When saving TWRP backups, the TWRP folder as a whole with desired backups should be saved.
If you can't restore the backup, you can flash a ROM that matches bootloader. Like I said before, factory reset and wipe internal memory and flash the ROM.

At this point I would just recommend flashing a new ROM man.
Sent from my SM-N910P using Tapatalk
Hi, I need your help to backup my current ROM and to update to some Android 10 custom ROM.
I am currently on a very old OOS based custom ROM with a rooted android version 7.1.1 (encrypted) and TWRP 3.2.1-0.
From what I remember, this TWRP version I have is bugged so that I cannot restore backups with it. However, since everything worked in the last years I didn't touch anything.
So, I want to..
1. backup my whole system and
2. install new custom ROM
Can someone tell me the steps I have to do?
I guess I have to..
1. Flash new TWRP (which one?)
2. Backup my partitions (does this work with a new TWRP for Android 7? Or would I need to use an older version?)
3. Install recent OOS firmware (which one and how? just flash it in TWRP?)
4. Wipe cache and data
5. Install new custom ROM
6. Install Magisk
7. Install Xposed
Is this correct?
I recently did the same thing. Your steps are correct, although I would add a couple more.
TWRP backup, TIBU backup, SMS backup, Then move all of those backups to your computer. Plus any contents of [Download, Documents, Pictures, Videos, DCIM, etc. ]
Download OOS from here, https://www.oneplus.com/support/softwareupgrade/details?code=PM1574156155944
This will completely reset you to factory. so you will need to set up the phone just enough to get developer mode on*, enable ADB*, & Unlock Bl
** I forgot this part and tried going to fastboot and directly flashing TWRP and got strange errors bc ADB wasn't enabled.
> Flashboot install recovery TWRP
Then I struggled with a few ROMS, but finally got CR Droid to install.
I flashed each file listed here, https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5t/development/rom-crdroid-android-6-t3972533
Hey there, thanks so far.
But would you install newest TWRP first before backing up, right? Or Will the newest version of TWRP not work anymore with android 7.1.1?
And do you use normal TWRP or Bluspark version?
Edit: I think I would prefer to just install the OOS firmware because I don't have a windows system anymore so I can't do the ADB stuff via command line. Or I guess I would have to setup a VM with windows installed.. O_x
