I just wanted a quick way to be able to do this in order to save battery when i dont need it.
i have read/heard that having gps enabled and active doesnt actually use any more battery until it is fed into a maps program (or something similar) which must then use that info to find a location from the internet.
so:
1) does gps really use extra battery when it is enabled/active but not actually being used at the time?
2) what is the best way to terminate the gps connection?
thx, Jim.
somewhere i read that if u go into settings...phone...services...location settings and turn that off (only 911 will use gps) it saves battery...but i havent even updated my vogue to use gps yet so i've only heard this in another thread...i wonder what happens if say u run googlemaps and try using gps while its off, will it enable or just not lock any satelittes?

ya i have read that about the location setting too, im just not sure if that really truly shuts gps off/terminates it completely....? anyone?
as for if it will work with the location setting disabled i am testing it now and...looks like it wont so..maybe that does the trick? hmm not sure...
alright well after another 10000 hrs of fooling around with roms and gps i have learned a lot. but the thing relative to this thread that i just checked is that you do not need location enabled to use gps. works just dandy w/o it. though i think that is where the agps comes in and therefore can/will probably help a bit to have it on, though it does drain more battery so i think im going to leave mine off for the time being.
The gps is not very good atleast it is not working very well in my phone.
I tried using cardio trainer. And the gps jumps about. Plus the gps signal shown is very low can anyone put their phone gps through the paces and then tell me should I ask for a replacement or its in all phones
Mines fine.
Mine works fine, GPS is actually pretty good as navigation tells you the road names..!

Can you clarify if you're talking about hardware or software?
And did you compare GS with other GPS at the very same time and place?
I too am seeing poor performance with the GPS. Seems to be a hardware issue.
I did a test over the weekend comparing my Galaxy S with a friend's HTC Desire. Using one of the many GPS utilities the Desire was consistently seeing and locking more satellites when stood in an open area outside. When running Google maps and showing the current location I found that the "accuracy circle" (for want of a better description) was growing and shrinking several times a minute causing the map to zoom in and out.
I've also noticed that the compass is almost unusable and showing a much lower signal compared to the Desire. I did perform the figure of 8 calibration several times.
Not tried the GPS yet, but I'm amazed how accurate network location is on this thing.
On my old G1 network location was laughable, but this thing knows pretty much exactly where it is without GPS.

probably having wifi on? google can locate you more precise cause it has registered every wifi network during the streetview picture taking.

Lol what kind of anti-google propaganda have you been reading?
Google streetview cars collected data of open wifi networks.
Besides from the fact that google doesn't use the data (which it isn't allowed to have), there are by far not enough open wifi networks to find your location.
Also. You have to have at least 3 networks to be able to determine a location using wifi access points.
So the statement you just made is rubbish and ofcourse nonsense...

i dont care about it, i like it.
hmm. just figured this because where i live there arent any open networks and with wifi on it knows my exact location. Without wifi it has a 1600 m radius.
The GPS seems to work flawlessly for me at least.

Google collected the SSID and MAC addresses for all of the wifi networks they found, with the explicit intention of using them as an additional source of location data. They also inadvertently collected more data from open networks, and that's what they're in trouble for.

yes and the new google navigation api in the i9000 and android appears to use this data as the damn thing turns on your wifi even when off when gps tries to get a fix!

nope it is disabled and try to get a gps fix.. wifi still comes on and then goes off.. not sure what it is doing.
I got mine and tested.
In the beginning I had a perfect fix on location. When I started moving, however, I experienced this "jumping around" issue with a huge loss of accuracy. The circle of accuracy was also changing constantly. I think I show something about the wifi seeing (or not being able to see - can't remember) some hotspots although my wi-fi was turned off.
Maybe indeed - the phone detects wifi networks even if the wifi as such is off and possibly compares it to an internal database (thus explaining the persistence of the problem even when the radio is off and the phone is not connected on the net).
Do you know any good free program that would allow me to get some test data - e.g. number of satellites / signal quality etc (unless there is already one somewhere in the interface - I am new to Android).
Can someone else run a test? Can some one run a test in an area where no wifi exists.
That's bad news,i'm really interested in this phone (money-forgiving for a while ),but i need great gps performances...

Try "GPS Test" its on the market for free. From my test the GPS is actually quite nice, several 18-25 SNR connections and a few 26-30 SNR ones ( When outside I even find one or two 31-40 SNR ones which is really great).
Anyway I notice that GPS had become far more accurate when I disabled the Wifi-location option. The only problem is that locking down takes some time ( about 10-20 seconds max) in my area.

ok - i will test with that and revert..
By the way, in my wm6 Touch HD there was a utility called quickgps which would download data from server instead of having them downloaded from a satellite with a low speed connection. This increased speed of cold lock. Furthermore there was also another option to enable assisted gps (not sure whether this was different from the quick gps application and what this did exactly). I wonder whether these application / features are automatically enabled in our case.

It can also be a problem of google navigation beta?? Did anyone try another gps navigator?
i felt the same thing about GPS, as it is not that good , as there's no wi-fi Google can detect hear. the performance was not that good at all!.
but tonight i used the GPS without the Wifi (i turned it off) and for a surprise the performance was amazing, I was with my friend in his car watching the road as he drive and watching the google map in my phone and was very good indeed.
that's strange!.
Hello ppl,
Since da past two months my desire is showing wrong current location in weather widget...earlier it used to show correct location...don't know what happened suddenly....any chance i could get back current location???? I hav tried changing roms and also tried clearing cache and defaults...but it still gives wrong location..
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
Hello,
I have had the same problem (and still can reproduce it), but after turning on the WiFi it works again.
Google is able to determine you location on basis of the WiFi's in you neighborhood.
What i have understood is that it somehow has to do with information that is not sent via the 2g/3g radio towers anymore.
But i'm not sure about that.
At least it is working much better with WiFi on.
Thanx a lot for info...but wid wifi also it shows wrong place..dis happens only when im at my home..if i go to my frnd's place which is some 21 km away from my place,it shows correct location ....whereas when im home, it shows current location as a place which is approx 35km away from my home..strange!!
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
Yeah, i know, i also have this problem.
But if you leave the WiFi on (always) and just walk in the neighborhood around, you will see that some of the SSID's that your phone can see, are also known by Google (streetview ) and thus android is able to find your location at that moment.
When you are at home, it still will keep that city as location.
I now have WiFi always on and if i have some trouble (because JuiceDefender refused the WiFi to start), i go to the balcony of our appartment and after some seconds, it knows again in which city i live
Just keep WiFi on and go outside. Inside the house there might be some trouble indeed.
Lately, this sounds like a duplicate post.
Considering, it doesn't matter if the widget gets info from WiFi, or a normal data connection, I think it's rather moot.
For the most part, the widget works ok, Until... you travel out of country, or the proximity.
At this point, it tells you, that you are in a city/country where you really are not in.
Granted, it depends on your provider to correlate this data.
Unfortunately, some apps do not. Case in point;
Left moscow for Kiev, Ukraine. After 4 days, it told me I was in Paris, France. Go figgure. 10 days later, when returned to Moscow, it told me, 2 days later, I was in Moscow.
It tells me, the weather widget has bugs. Sorry, I am a Win Developer. A bug is what it is.
I installed WF & Clock widget, no problems since
Thanx a lot ppl for giving me knowledge..
Peace

Hi guys,
Since I'm playing Ingress, and the GPS of my One X is getting worse day by day, I've found an old but good BT GPS receiver... I've downloaded some apps for pairing my GPS to the phone, and it actually works! But, I need to allow Mock Locations in the Devs settings... Ingress doesn't start with this option...
Is there a method to bypass the Mock Location setting? I've tried to copy the app in /system/app, but it's the same...

I play ingress as well, and I am pretty sure you are looking to cheat as the newest ingress (1.22.0) balances out the GPS after a few minutes, actually works pretty well on my HTC merge, now GS3. But however since you are rooted, there is no way i have found yet to date that will use a bluetooth GPS without mock locations. My father has a GS3 as well and he doesn't "want google to know where the *heck* he is all the time" so he was using a bluetooth gps. Then the newer update requires Google to know where you are if you want to use google maps (imagine that). So, if you need to, there is a program called "Fake GPS Location". This will have to be moved to your system\app folder with permissions.
I just hope that you are not using this app for cheating as I love the game and enjoy the moving around (hate the fuel consumption) and I know I would not appreciate someone faking their location around my neck of the woods.
FINALLY: It has been noted that google has caught on to this and won't let you move around too fast and can sometimes tell that you are faking. This is done by verifying that your Lat/Long doesn't change frequently/too accurate or is too fast. So keep in mind that it would be best to use your standard GPS until you are at location the "set location" and hope for the best.
Happy Gaming! BTW my Ingress alias is the same as my screen name here. Good luck!

Brand new Huawei P6 ... GPS horrible!!! .. takes ages to lock on, and then when it does [sometimes] cannot use NAV for any reliable length of time as GPS drops out and stays out .... oh, some times it might come back on again .. but long after the waypoint has been passed making the navigation service completely useless ....
Have upgraded to B111 via the GUI on the phone. Android 4.2.2 but ... no joy.
I have been trying to find a reason .. thought maybe it was app related and that myabe gmaps or nav contributing to the issue ... so installed some GPS helper apps to try and troubleshoot the issue, but they seem to be affected by the same problem ...
I am annoyed and frustrated as i rely heavily on GPS ... the Ascend G600 i had previously worked flawlessly!!!
Has anybody got any clues on this ... :crying:
Try TopNTP. Play around with the settings. One of them might speed up lock on tremendously.
My fastest lock on was 7 seconds, even with GPS cold start. Inside my apartment!

Thnx for the suggestion UpUp ... but unfort no joy either with TopNTP.
So did a factory reset and first up Google Maps Navigation finds my location and draws the route to destination .. even get a voice announcement to send me on my journey ... BUT from that point on the GPS icon continually flashes with a notification "Searching for GPS ..." that continues ad infinitum with the map locked on my initial position ... suddenly it might jump to some totally inaccurate location ... and then finally the voice announces Lost GPS Connection ...
However, on one occassion .. after 'searching for location' for about 15 mins .. all of a sudden my location is pinned as accurate and the navigation went along smoothly for about 3 klm ... then "Lost GPS Connection" again ... never to return!!
I have tried TopNTP, GPS Status & Fix, GPS Fix, Essential GPS ecc ... but no joy!!
I cannot believe just how crappy the Google Maps Navigation is on this highly regarded HUAWEI phone is!!!
Surely i cant be the ONLY one with this gripe??? But at this stage i can find very little on the net about it ... very frustrating!!
PS: At one stage i got GPS Status & Fix to lock on in smart time 7 seconds with maybe 6 out of 9 sats .. but then when i loaded Google Maps Navigation, even GPS Status & Fix could no longer get a fix!!!
Does anybody know if there is an issue with the software Google Maps Navigation????
Help IS neeeeded .. thnx!
Mmm... wonder if your P6's GPS is defective. You should get service since it's new.
I read a lot about slow lock-on, but it is a common complaint on most brand names. Nothing can't be remedied by TopNTP or GPS Fix.

Okay .. fair call .. i was starting to think the same way due to lack of similar cases returned via Google search.
Spoke to their local service centre ... after describing the issue was promptly told to return the phone for servicing, even though i pressed for a firmware upgrade! Even though they would not admit it, sounds like they believed it to be a hardware issue.
So have to wait 2-3 days for an email to arrange pickup instructions .. then 2-3 weeks for resolution!!! But i have no option, save throw it in the bin and try another brand/model ... obviously at my expense! .. wtf ... will just have to be patient.
Will advise on outcome.
Thnx
This is what I did,
go to dialer, press
*#*#2846579159#*#* then go to item5, background setting, next to AGPS settings, change the positioning method to autonomous, on service location, change to supl.google.com. This will speed up the GPS lock. I am using ASIA phone, not sure if your firmware is similar. Good luck.

Alternatively, if your phone is rooted, you can replace the gps.conf file under the System\etc\ with the one I am using now.
I actually got it from the LG Flex and played around with it. It works perfactly. When you have Internet on, it fix the SAT really quick.
You need the Root Explorer to change the permission to overwrite or delete.

Can I use this on Europe version of the phone?
Edit: OK, I answer myself. The posted gps.conf file works great on my phone (EU/CZ) and at the moment I get fix in a few seconds.
