Marshmallow OTA update questions - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I have a few questions regarding the Marshmallow update to the One (M8). First of all, I own an international M8 on stock, rooted, with TWRP KitKat firmware version 3.32.707.9. I have not updated either my Sense Home (still have Sense 6 mainly), and most of my apps are the Sense 6 versions, which I prefer to the colourful Sense 7 versions. So, my questions:
I still haven't received the Marshmallow update at all. Do I need to update to Lollipop or will I receive a Marshmallow notification even while on KitKat?
If the above is not possible, then can I install the OTA onto my phone after downloading the zip file from a mirror directly?
Can I backup all the Sense 6 apps that I want, like HTC Clock, HTC Blinkfeed and such with Titanium Backup, update to Marshmallow and restore them, and expect them all to work properly?
Thanks.

1. You need to have lollipop 4.19.707.4 stock ROM to receive Marshmallow update. Won't get it on KitKat, lollipop lower than 4.19.707.4 won't get it too.
2. No
3. Yes & No ... but mostly No unless it's a full KitKat ROM running on Marshmallow firmware.

That's a bummer... Ah, it was time I cleaned out my phone and clean-installed all my apps and stuff anyway. Thanks for the help. I was hoping I could get the nice globe HTC Clock from Sense 6 in Marshmallow, it was quite useful...

Some updates - I realised that I deleted some system apps without making backups, and now I can't update to Lollipop (and thence to Marshmallow). Big mistake, yes. How do I find which apps were deleted, and how do I restore them? Or is it more prudent to simply make a Titanium Backup of my data, flash a TWRP backup of the new Marshmallow ROM and just restore my data?

If you want the official OTA, none of that will work. OTA requires stock never rooted ROM.
You can restore a stock nandroid 3.32.707 from ckpv5's collection (link in his signature), and corresponding stock recovery, then do OTAs, all the way up to Marshmallow (if or when its released for your version).

Alright, I successfully flashed an un-rooted TWRP nandroid backup of 3.32.707.9, updated to Lollipop and thence to Marshmallow. I performed a factory reset and then restored all my apps and settings, and proceeded to flash TWRP and the SuperSU binary.
Lo and behold, my phone is now stuck in a boot loop. It gets to the 'One' screen, and then just locks up. I have to press Power + Volume Up to reboot it and switch it off. Any fixes? Also note that my USB port is, for some reason, also dysfunctional now. I can only connect to my PC in 'Fastboot AC' mode, and I've tried three cables already, two different PCs and all the USB ports in both PCs.
Edit: I restored my Kit Kat nandroid backup that I made. My phone has been saved, but now I have to do this gruelling update process all over again. Isn't there a faster way?

If you try to do the steps in your first paragraph (Post #6), I'm pretty sure it won't work. Even though the ROM is back to KitKat, all the other firmware (hboot, radio, etc.) is still on MM, so the OTA won't allow you to update back to MM again.
Did you make a TWRP backup before you tried to flash SuperSU (you should always make a backup before applying mods; especially a backup of the unrooted, stock ROM)? If so, restore it. Otherwise, you may need to find a nandroid of the MM "707" stock ROM, or ask someone to upload it.
What version SuperSU did you flash? Versions before 2.51 or so don't work for MM, and will cause the no-boot condition. Also, TWRP should be latest version 2.8.7.0.

This is where I messed up. I flashed 2.46.
I'll see if the OTA works, or else I'll just RUU Kit Kat, and then OTA.

I suspected as much. In the future, keep in mind that new builds usually require a new SuperSU version.

That should work. I assume there is RUU for 707 version (can never keep straight which versions do/no not have RUU)? If there is a LP RUU for your version, it would be easier to run that (skip the step of the OTA).

Now, my phone's USB port has stopped working. I can only charge it through my PC, and not get any sort of MTP connection. Something's wrong.

Slide down the notification then in the drop down select file transfers (for MTP) instead of charging

I don't get any notification. It's as if the phone doesn't even realise it's plugged into a PC, and just charges.

What ROM that you have now on your device ? You already updated to MM, right ?
If it is your old KitKat ...
Install TWRP 2.8.7.0
Boot to TWRP recovery then enable MTP to transfer files from PC to device
Restore a non-rooted MM

What do you mean "Now"? Which did you end up doing? Stock kitkat nandroid? KK RUU? LP RUU?
Try to go to Windows Device Manager, find the device, and manually pick the generic Android MTP drivers. See if that makes MTP or fastboot/adb work properly.

I haven't done anything yet. I tried to connect my phone previously to try and enter fastboot USB mode before all this, and I noticed that my phone was only connecting as fastboot AC. I could not, and still cannot get any computer to recognise my device. I've tried a few other cables, too.
Edit: I have fixed this issue. It was a case of loose USB contact between my device and the cable. Tweaking some of the gold contacts on the cable helped, and my PC now shows my One M8 connected. Fastboot is connected as Fastboot USB, too. I'm going to perform a Titanium Backup, and then restore the Lollipop RUU and proceed with updating to Marshmallow. Hope it works out fine this time.
Thanks for the help, everyone.

New updates - I found an RUU for 4.19.707.2, and attempted to apply it, only to receive an error 159, stating that the RUU image size was different compared to the device image size. What's wrong?

You can't use lower version RUU 4.19.707.2 when your current firmware is 6.14.707.1

Save all the hassle to restore a KitKat or Lollipop RUU/backups ... just restore non-rooted backup 6.14.707.1 - check my thread linked in my signature, you should find it on post #3

Of course, but I saw in several places that if the M8 is S-OFF then this rule doesn't apply...

So .. your device is S-Off ?
What you read is correct for lollipop and below.
When it comes to RUU exe when you have Marshmallow firmware on your device or running a Marshmallow RUU exe, it works differently ..
That's the reason why I wrote "You can't use lower version RUU 4.19.707.2 when your current firmware is 6.14.707.1" as I know you tried RUU exe
Good luck...

Rooted M8 + Stock recovery

Ok, I rooted and S-offed my phone to install adaway and to remove some google blotware from my stock ROM. Then i put back stock recovery to have option of OTA update.
Question is, how can I know that OTA is working? When I had custom recovery I have tried search for updates to see is there any difference noticable. It searched for updates, the same it is searching now with stock. But, there is no any updates atm.
So, once when they actually come, how will I know is my phone seeing them?

Good question and I've been wondering the same myself. I welcome corrections on this but from my understanding, your bootloader must be relocked (tampered flag is OK AFAIK), and I don't think S-Off or On will matter (but likely will be returned to S-ON after OTA), and the recovery must be flashed to stock. Additionally, your Software/OS number should match the most recent update provided by your carrier which can be found on their support page (unable to link because <10 posts hehe).
Being rooted itself shouldn't be a problem as well from what I understand.
After doing something like the Dev bootloader unlock, the calculator and flashlight apps are removed - I wonder if the removal of those apps will cause OTA update issues or if it's just any alterations to the \system folder that is cause for concern?
Damn, you brought even more questions to the table. Bootloader relocked? I found on forums that only that stock recovery is important. Plus, now when you said, I checked fir calculator and flaslight. Both gone...
Plus, I had one small 2-3 sec long photo of my carrier during boot. It is gone to.
You said about OS number... it should match cause my ROM is stock.
And I have to update my phone asap when available cuz my carrier is having this well known bug with my phone: data connection is dcing with download arrow next to H letter that stops to light.
You don't need to relock bootloader to get OTA. Stock recovery and all the system apps should be present and you shouldn't be rooted.

Even if those system apps are: google kiosk, for example?
And, will I see those OTAs when they come without being able to install OR i will not be able to see them at all?
If you have a stock ROM and haven't messed with the CID or MID, you will get the notification.
To install the OTA, you need an unmodified ROM and stock boot loader.

Woops, I guess I was mostly wrong! Good to know. This means I also need to replace the flashlight and calculator apps as well?
Ok, prerequisites for OTA on rooted stock rom
1, it is fine to be rooted
2, it is fine to be s off
3, you must have stock recovery
4, you must have stock firmware
5, you must have completely stock rom (see above its fine to still be rooted) i.e no system apps removed, the rom must be as it was out of the box with all bloatware etc.
if you meet the above conditions, you should be able to get OTAs:good:
Only issue maybe that the ota breaks root i beleive, but once that's installed, you can reflash custom recovery and su binaries

Few aps like calculator and flashlight gone away with the root, I was not the one who deleted them. I did not even know they will be deleted so I didn't backup them.
My only question is, since all other conditions are met, will my phone at least "see" that OTA update? And when that happens, I can do Factory reset in stock recovery (which i have) and with some luck deleted aps will be installed again.

do you have a stock backup??
if so just retsore that with a CUSTOM recovery, then flash your stock recovery and that should be all you need if the other conditions are satisfied. By restoring a stock backup you will have these missing apps. if you don't have a backup, check HERE
you will need the matching backup to your firmware (in fastboot type "fastboot getvar mainver" and it will let you know if you are unsure of your firmware number.
Oh and thank @Mr Hofs for his lovely backup collection

[Q] One M8 LRA soft brick issues

Good evening everyone -
I'm running into some issues with my LRA version of the M8. I am/was rooted and running TWRP fine until I decided to revert back to the stock recovery so I could install the latest OTA that was released to me. Like an idiot I never backed up my stock OTA before flashing TWRP so I extracted the firmware.zip from the OTA download, relocked my bootloader, then used fastboot to flash firmware.zip. All seemed to go well until I rebooted, I'm now stuck at the HTC splash screen and can get no further. Things I've done:
- tried booting into recovery, got red triangle w/red exclamation mark
- unlocked bootloader and installed TWRP, can get into recovery now at least
- tried factory reset
- wiped cache, no luck
Unfortunately the LRA M8 isn't very common it appears so I'm unable to find a stock ROM to try and reinstall. I'm hoping someone might be able to help me get started back up without the need for my stock RUU or nandroid backup. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, please let me know what other info I could provide to help out. Thanks in advance.

Did your firmware.zip have a boot*.img in it? You probably need the old version of the boot.img to match the old software. You might want to find on of the old Verizon RUUs and extract the boot.img from there and try flashing that in fastboot. Message me if the Verizon boot doesn't work for you, I might have some other ideas. I'd say be careful, but you're already in trouble.
Edit: You could also do a nandroid backup and try a custom ROM to get it functional in the short term.
I did eventually grab a nandroid backup and loaded Viper Rom on it, although it's a bit quirky - probably because the LRA version of the phone is slightly different than the stock Verizon version. That being said, the firmware.zip that I loaded did have a boot.img file in it so I'm guessing that's the issue. Do you think the boot.img from a Verizon RUU would work considering my phone is not the same exact version as the Verizon one? Or another way to ask it I guess is if there's really any harm in me restoring my nandroid and loading a standard Verizon boot.img? I'd think it can't render my phone any more useless than it was previously, just wasn't sure how locked in the boot.img file was to the specific model\OS that's on the phone. The whole LRA phone thing is really a kick in the pants.

The boot.img from an older Verizon RUU would probably work, but you might have to try a couple to get the right one. The boot.img is directly tied to the ROM version that is installed, and is often called the kernel and tells the system how to boot the ROM.
Make sure you do a backup of your working Viper before restoring the stock one and trying to flash a boot.img.
I don't understand why you re locked the boot loader and flashed a firmware zip just to revert to stock recovery? All you had to do was pull the stock recovery from the firmware.zip in the OTA then flash it via fast boot. Then go ahead and flash the OTA.
You need to now find and flash a compatible boot.img. Just keep trying different ones until it boots.
I'm making a little progress here, thanks for the help. I downloaded a 4.4.3 Verizon kernel, loaded that (after restoring the old nandroid backup) and I'm able to boot, whew... I'm having two issues now, 1) my wireless won't turn on for some reason and 2) I tried installing the 4.4.4 OTA update my carrier released (downloaded via 4G) and it won't apply - I was hoping successfully applying this OTA would fix the wireless issue. Looking at my software version it looks like I'm actually running 4.4.2, could that cause both of these issues? I'm trying to locate a 4.4.2 kernel to load but figured I'd toss out the question in the meantime.
Ashyx - I wish I had a better answer to why I temporarily relocked the boot loader and flashed firmware.zip other than desperation (trying to get that darn OTA). It was a while ago I flashed the firmware.zip file but I thought that when I initially extracted the recovery from the zip file and flashed it I could no longer boot into a recovery, maybe I'm making that up though - I can hardly remember last week lol. I'm an IT guy, so I'm not completely clueless, but I'm far from proficient with mobile technologies, as I'm sure you gathered already.
Anyways, I'd appreciate any insight, in the mean time I'm going to keep hunting for a 4.4.2 kernel to try on this thing. Thanks again to all.

Try the zips from here, they should have a boot.img for 4.4.2.

Ok, I think I'm back up and running. I was able to find a 4.4.2 boot.img that allowed me to once again use my wireless. After getting the wireless working I had to find valid versions of flashlight.apk and calculator.apk to put in data/preload and the OTA finally took....success at last. I really appreciate the help durgis, I'll be grabbing a nandroid of my now working phone right away so I don't run into issues in the future. Again, thank you for the help, very much appreciated.
I suspect that we are on the same carrier, LRA__001. I've been fighting a similar problem to yours. The only custom rom I've been able to install is Cyanogenmod. It's good, but the battery life is horrible for me. Also, I can't get MMS or 4G to work. Everything other rom I've tried won't boot up for me. Any chance that you could provide a link to your nandroid backup? I'm looking to get back to a more stock rom that I can get OTA updates on. Thanks.

Hey rook, I do have the same CID, are you on Cellcom out of Wisconsin? I didn't grab a bare bones nandroid, but i can do a backup, uninstall my apps and do one, or rebuild mine from my unbootable one now that I have everything i need. If you want to try a different ROM you could try Viper, it worked decent for me, just a few quirks when i bounced from wireless to 3G for some reason.
I am with Cellcom. My problems started with the recent OTA update. The update wouldn't take, because of the flashlight.apk. I decided it was time to root this phone anyway and try some custom roms. I've done it with my other HTC phones in the past with no problems. Unlocked the bootloader, loaded TWRP and did a backup. Didn't check where the backup was being put and ended up saving it to internal. Put on a new ROM and wiped my backup. Cyanogenmod 11 is the only ROM that I've had success with. Every other rom that I have tried so far will not complete the initial boot. I suspect that I'm missing something stupid, or it has something to do with the OTA update not completing. Are you running Viper, or did you get the Cellcom OTA update to work?
I was running Viper for a while but now have my phone reverted to stock with the 4.4.4 OTA applied. If you want a nandroid of stock Cellcom 4.4.4 I can work on one for you, it may take a couple days to get it but I should be able to get one.
That would be awesome. I've been looking for a stock Rom for a while now. As you know those are nearly impossible to find. Not having a stock nandroid backup or the OTA update zip kind of put me in a SOL position. Thanks for your help.
Finally got around to this, try the download below, it's the stock 4.4.4 ROM and also the stock recovery (for future OTA updates). Let me know if it works out for you. I also have the 4.4.4 OTA updated if needed.

Hi Guys, (@rook79 , @promsos)
i have the same model and running into similar problem, i was also not able to flash any other rom than SkyDragon, wanted to be able to flash other roms but no luck, i thought its the firmware that wont let me install so i went for S-Off and flashed one of the firmware from verizon, since there was not much help for this specific model and everyone was referring it as a variant from verizon, i did flash one and my problem started, my phone had no signals after flashing the firmware and was still not able to flash any other ROM, i flashed couple of more firmwares and radios to get my network working but no luck, and i got a new problem that the phone keeps rebooting after a couple of minutes it loads into system.
then somebody helped me with the stock firmware 4.4.4 from here and nandroid from this thread, firmware was still verizon, i managed to restore it but still the same reboot issue and no signals, but i was able to download OTA which wont install, everytime i try to install it, it goes to stock recovery with a progress bar 1% filled and then stuck into boot loop and after n number of attempts it boots into system, where again it reboots after a couple of minutes.
extracted the firmware from OTA and manually flashed it and tried to install OTA but still same, i tried to reboot into stock recovery but every time i do that, it goes to black screen and then keep rebooting, i am not able to get to that red triangle screen.
help less clueless trying to find complete RUU for it (not sure if thats going to help)
my partition table has 2 vzw partitions as well because i flashed dottat's RUU for verizon.
can you guys help me with that?

Look in the general forum for full guide. You need to go back to stock. Basically flash stock recovery and re-lock bootloader. If you loaded system mods then you probably have to run the ruuxx.exe for your model before doing the OTA. Otherwise you can try OTA after re-lock.
does anyone know how to delete this update? I clicked it by mistake and it installed and tried to update, but it messed with my root making some apps just showing grayed out SD and it keeps trying to make me try to install it again. I was thinking if I can find out where the install file is, i could just delete it and everything might go back to normal.
What is the update contains ??? Did anyone try???

I installed it on my Virgin Mobile A5-chl. Doesn't appear to be anything major, mainly just the Stagefright patch. I don't see any other improvements or changes. It was a small patch, so I'm guessing it was just the patch.

The OTA file should be in your download directory. The install failed so it's going to keep asking. I'm not sure if it has an option to never install the update?
I'm seen that app grayed out thing. It's just the apps you've moved to your SD card through the apps page in settings. For some reason it sometimes takes a few seconds for the app to display correctly. I don't think it has anything to do with the software upgrade.

It's the Stage fright patch. Google it if you want to know more, but basically anyone can crash or take over your phone just by sending you a text w/video.

It's a zip file with a crazy long name that I will not type, but it starts with OTA_A5_CHL_L50_DESIRE. You can find the full name in the link in the patch thread in the general forum.

I forgot to mention that after the update patch is successful the OTA zip file is deleted. I can't remember if the zip file is also deleted if the update fails, but if it isn't in the download (s) directory than it's deleted. Just download the OTA again and delay the install if you want to copy it to your PC to extract and examine the update.
Does anybody have a pure stock twrp or cwm backup before this OTA? I forgot to make my own. the RUU.exe keeps failing with "RomTool.exe has stopped working."my laptop may be at fault, but I can transfer files to and from my phone just fine. VM a5_CHL

Did you try uninstalling and then reinstalling HTC Sync? Can I assume you flashed stock recovery and re-locked boot loader?
Any chance you still have the Kitkat to Lollipop OTA update zipfile and can extract and flash the firmware.zip then run the Lollipop ruu.exe (not the new one with the patch). Take a look at this thread for how to info. Basically you're pre flashing the firmware that should be in the ruu.exe file so the ruu.exe shouldn't fail. Then the ota SF patch should run.

Nope. don't have the update zip. I'm s-off. rooted. busybox. xposed framework. So much modding I can't OTA because my system files are tainted. but yes, I've uninstalled/reinstalled HTC sync manager on my pc. tried fastboot drivers from here at xda. even uninstalled all of the android sdk files and reinstalled. I'm currently on the 5.0.2 HTC release already. I was able to complete the ru u.exe on my newer laptop. but all I have now is an old Vista x86 laptop. I think the usb ports aren't the best to work with. flashed stock recovery, relocked boot loader several times over. just fed up I restored my rooted, xposed twrp until I can try a different pc.
All is well! Found a Kit Kat stock unrooted twrp backup on my external drive. flashed that, changed the boot.emmc to boot.img. flashed that. Redownloaded the first Lollipop OTA, extracted the stock recovery from the firmware.zip. flashed that. OTA'd the original lollipop release, then OTA'd the stagefright patch. started from scratch but got it done. bootloader stayed unlocked the whole time since I'm s-off. thanks for info, though.
Looking for CWM backup
I've already flashed recovery stock and re-locked
but OTA download corrupted
So, any option to install this patch without going back to stock, and re-locking bootloader ?

Can't get past hands free activation on any rom

Decided to go back to my S-oFF Sprint htc one m8 from over a year ago.
First thing I did was update my firmware only, no recovery no boot, firmware only. I upgraded firmware to 6.20.651.3 using this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2729173
I then updated my twrp from 2.8.50 to 3.0.2-0.
after I try any rom, even sprint roms, I can't get passed the hands free activation and prl update screen. It will reboot before the phone boots up. I have tried a few gpe roms and it wont get past the boot screen.
I tried loading up a nandroid i made over a year ago and its a lollipop rom that works, but still wants to go through handsfree activation. I am able to turn it off there, but want to get back to marshmallow and newer roms. I called sprint support and they said it shows as fully activated on their end.
What else should I try? Should i upgrade firmware, recovery and boot?
I hate bumping, but im out of options here. Any advice?

I've gone through countless threads like these: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2716834
my situation seams to be unique, where my phone will actually reboot right after hands free activation, thus rendering it useless. I've been able to mount the system in twrp and delete the htc service apk, but on the marshmallow roms, i can't get LTE to work.
Im stumped. :crying:
So I've managed to read through threads and turn off hands free activation by:
1. Using wifi at initial setup (this helps get passed the initial hands free activation)
2. Mounting system in twrp, then deleting htcservice apk in twrp (this helps getting past the initial setup if its a problem)
3. freezing vdm client in titanium backup to avoid having the hands free activation keep popping up.
However, even though I made sure to upgrade my firmware in steps I am not sure if i properly have the latest firmware installed correctly. Is there a way to check? I have LTE on 5.0 roms, but cannot get LTE to work on 6.0 roms. Even 3g data toggles on and off on 6.0 roms.
Any help on the LTE and firmware issues would be very much appreciated!

On the bootloader screen, the OS number indicates the firmware version. Alternately, if you do fastboot getvar all, the firmware number is shown as "version-main". So you will want to see 6.20.651.3 there for Marshmallow firmware (6.20.654.3 for HK Edition).
Additionally, if the OS number is red on the bootloader screen, or a 2nd number is shown in parenthesis (usually in red) it means there is an issue with the firmware not properly installed (partially installed).

Then I appear to be stuck as to why data does not work on my 6.0 roms. I am a Sprint user, tested the stock rooted rom from OMJ's thread, tried insert coin rom, viper rom. None of the 6.0 roms have data working properly.

Only thing I can think of, is do full RUU (will wipe the phone) instead of just the firmware, and see if that helps.

Does the bootloader need to be relocked? if not, can i rename the ruu as 0P6BIMG.zip and update through fastbook in the bootloader?

Since you are s-off, you do not need to relock the bootloader to RUU.
Yes, you can use the SD card method (rename RUU to 0P6BIMG.zip, put on SD card, and reboot into bootloader).

Welp, did the RUU last night. It changed nothing, and did nothing for me other than making it a pain to reinstall twrp and get my nandroid back up. booo
lte and data is still spotty on 6.0 roms. The only other possible reason i think this could be happening is because i tried to carrier unlock this phone a few months ago, but i downloaded sim card info app, and it all appears to be ok.

Question on mismatch of OS version in download mode compared to sw information

Hey everyone,
Apologize if this is something that has been asked before, haven't been able to find much information on it using search. Also still a relative newbie to android, so hope you folks will bear with me. I'm seeing the OS version in download mode showing as OS-3.36.709.3, while the software number in software information shows 4.30.617.12. Is this considered normal, or did I mess something up?
I previously had Marshmallow on my phone, and used TWRP to install the developer edition of Nougat. Was trying to do OTA, which unsurprisingly didn't work with TWRP installed. My plan is to reflash the recovery.img, but I'm unsure whether I should be using the recovery.img for 4.30.617.12, or the one for 3.36.709.3? Is there something I should do to get the versions aligned properly? Trying to make sure I avoid bricking the phone
The easiest solution would be downloading the latest version of the rom that you installed in the past and flashing it via TWRP.
Some advices: Please read the ReadMe thread. It explains why the version numbers differ (e.g. in the RUU section). In addition it will explain to you, that installing OTAs with TWRP actually is possible (c.f. the OTA section) but not in your case. Even with the correct stock recovery for your phone (the 709 one) you wouldn't be able to achieve your goal. You're trying to install an update for a completely different firmware than the current one of your phone. That's not possible. OTAs are incremental. That means you need to be using the firmware that the OTA is supposed to update (4.30.617.12) and not 3.36.709.3. You would need to convert your phone if you want to install that update.
You might want to read the article that I called "the difference between rom and firmware" in the further reading section of the ReadMe thread, as well, after you finished reading the ReadMe thread itself.
Be aware that it's always best to use a system that has the same version (or at least the same mayor version - e.g. 3.x for marshmallow or 4.x for nougat) as your phone. This way you can be sure that system and firmware are optimized for each other. Mismatches can cause unforseen side effects like battery drainage, lags or bugs.
I read the ROM vs. firmware article, and also based on your last comment, I think it would be best to align the firmware and ROM versions. If I'm understanding things correctly, I either need to flash the firmware to a version matching my ROM (4.30.617.12) by following the steps in the 's-off firmware flashing thread', or else I need to go back to a 3.36.709.3 rom and use OTA to update the firmware/ROM. If I use TWRP to update the ROM, I'll still be stuck with an older firmware. Is my understanding on this correct?
I originally go the phone second hand, and am not sure what ROM was on it to begin with. Had previously tried to get it back to stock to update to Nougat via OTA, but kept getting the your device software has been modified regardless of what I did, so ended up using TWRP.
P.S. will make sure to put questions in the right forum in the future.

Then the phone had been modified before you got it. Since android 5 google is using block-based OTAs. That means re-flashing the stock recovery isn't sufficent if you want to update your phone and modified it, beforehand. You need to restore a completely untouched system image.
Check the ReadMe thread. The RUU section as well as the TWRP section II should contain the files and instructions that you need for restoring the OTA function of your phone. It's up to you which of the methods you prefer to use.
Appreciate the information and the advice. Decided to RUU back to a 3.x version, and use OTA to upgrade to Nougat. Took a lot of updates to get it to the latest version, but everything is working well now
