As Google and Samsung release android updates, Rooting becomes harder and harder and new methods are constantly need in order to obtain Root. Senior Member @JoeFCaputo113 has found a Root method that should support Lollipop (OJ7, OL1) and up. I just decided to put together a nice little guide to help new and existing users.
* This WILL trip KNOX neither In or anyone else mentioned on this thread are responsible for anything that happens to your devices(s)*
1) Download Odin (This is the tool used to flash Samsung Firmware)
2) Download the latest TWRP Tar File
3) Download the latest Systemless SuperSU
4) Unzip Odin and open it up, click the button labeled "AP"/"PDA" and navigate to where you saved the TWRP Tar file and press "Select". You will noticed that the box next to the "AP"/"PDA" button is now checked.
5) Connect the device and allow the computer to install drivers. Now open the Settings app and scroll down to the bottom of the list and click "About phone" and tap "Build Number" several times until you get a message saying "Developer Options have been enabled". Once you get that message push the back button and click "Developer options" and enable "OEM Unlocking" (To disable FRP (Factory Reset Protection) Lock)
6) Power Off the device and boot into Odin/ Download Mode <How To: (Power on your device by pressing and holding (at the same time) the power, volume down and home buttons. Then once on there blue Odin screen it will tell you to press volume up to continue or volume down to reboot, PRESS VOLUME UP
7) In Odin you should see "Device Added" just click the "Options" tab and make sure nothing is checked but "Auto Reboot". Now go back to the first tab and press the "Start" button.
8) You should now be booted into TWRP and you *May* be asked if you want to keep your system "Read Only" just tick the box (To not show again) and then Swipe to allow modifications. Now click the "Mount" button and make your that "Data, System and Cache" are all checked. You should see your device appear in your Windows file manger. Just move the Systemless SuperSU to your device and click the "Install" button (in TWRP). Now navigate to where you saved the file and click on it then just swipe to install it.
9) Once its done flashing click the option to reboot *Please note the first reboot will take a while*. SuperSU can be found on the play store
10) You can find custom ROMs on the Android Development Thread and the Original Android Development Thread

Is this work on sprint OL1?
And without room can i turn off handsfree activation?
Thanks
Yes, this root method works for OJ7/ OL1 (Sprint) as for hand free activation, I'm not sure I imagine if you know where it is you could create a flashable zip that could remove it from your ROM(s).

Nvm, worked fine for me so far on latest fw, OL1 was the last characters of the version I had. Flashed the Hacker Kernel and 2.67 over it again, and it is working with no issues since.

My phone was paid off I called sprint they unlocked my s6 free of charge I now use it with T-Mobile.
So! by the looks of this people are able to flash this and have no problems yet? Also when you mean OL1 you are talking about the baseband version correct? i dont mind tripping knox just dont want any problems after i do this... ALSO! flashing roms works successful with this too?

Correct, no problems doing this method, OL1 is the build version and yes, you can flash ROMs after doing this

Frequently Asked Questions about OTAs
Question 1: Will I lose root if I update?
Answer 1: Yes, if the update goes through at all. See FAQ #3 and the [GUIDE] for more details.
Question 2: How do I update to XXX if I am rooted? Do I need to unroot and go back to stock?
Answer 2: No, this is a common misconception. There is absolutely NO need to unroot, or even to use apps that feature an "OTA survival mode". What you CAN do is head over to freeza's thread and flash the "firmware/modem/baseband" update zip in recovery, and then either wait for the dev of your ROM to update his base to the latest and greatest--most devs will do this one or two days after an update is released--or flash freeza's simple stock rooted rom (from the link above) of the latest update. You could also flag the stock rooted rom and then your preferred custom rom. This way you get the benefits of the latest update, but the features of your preferred rom.
Question 3: How do I get rid of the update notification?
Answer 2: Now, galaxys3man already beat me to the punch on this one, so I will quote his post as this is the only surefire way to get rid of the update notification, but there are a couple alternatives that may or may not work, should you decide to try them, see the [GUIDE] in the second post.
Question 4: I updated to XXX and now I can't find the PRL Write feature? Help!
Ok, so first head over to digiblur's PRL Write Enabler thread and download the one for your version and then just sideload the app. This feature has been disabled for whatever reason on builds ≥ MA4.
Remember: Root is lost, Root is lost, Root is lost, when you take the official update!
GUIDE: Disable the Update Notification
Surefire #1
This method requires editing the build.prop. For a comprehensive guide on how to do this, please head over to galaxys3man30s {Guide} How to edit build props for noobs.
Open your /system/build.prop file and change all instances of MB1 to MD4.
Inside /system/build.prop
ro.build.id=JZO54K.L710VPBMB1
ro.build.version.incremental=L710VPBMB1
ro.build.description=d2spr-user 4.1.2 JZO54 L710VPBMB1 release-keys
ro.build.fingerprint=samsung/d2spr/d2spr:4.1.2/JZO54K/L710VPBMB1:user/release-keys
ro.build.PDA=L710VPBMB1
ro.build.hidden_ver=L710VPBMB1

NOTE: Its not necessary to change ro.build.id if you don't want to, it will only change what you see under "About Phone" in Settings.

Download the app from this thread
Using a root explorer, move the app downloaded above to /system/app and set the permissions to rw-r--r-- or 644.
Reboot into recovery, wipe cache and dalvik and all will be good.

Ok, as I said, the above are the only SUREFIRE way to get rid of it, but there are three other methods if you are willing to take the risk.
Alternative 1: Download the update (on a stock rom) and allow to fail when it tries to flash in recovery. There have been mixed reports as to the success of this method, some have had the update flash even while on a custom rom and custom recovery, while others couldn't get it to go through even on pure stock-rooted! The point is, even people with the exact same setup had different results, so try this one at your own risk.
Alternative 2: Disable the items in /system related to the update
I quote:
lordazoroth said:
Solution:
Step 1. Delete the update located in /cache/fota/ and then click the update notification prompt to install it, it will instantly fail and the notification will disappear.
Step 2. Disable Otacerts.zip located in /etc/security by renaming it to otacerts.zip.bak
Step 3. Disable FotaClient.apk and FWUpgrade.apk by renaming with .bak extensions located in /system/app/
Step 4. Reboot
FWUpgrade.apk may be the only file you need to disable to prevent future notifications, but I disable all just in case.
Click to collapse
Alternative 3: Freeze the Software Update app with a program like TitaniumBackup
1. Open the app
2. Scroll to the "All Apps" list, or similar
3. Select the app by either long-pressing on it or selecting its checkbox
4. Freeze it using the menu that either pops up, or is floating at the top or at the bottom
5. Profit
So those are all the ways I know of, but remember the golden rule: ALWAYS make a Nandroid (aka backup) of your current setup!
And, of course, be careful with whatever you decide to do!!
Disclaimer:
I take NO responsibility for your actions, but I would be glad to help if anything goes wrong.
To the S3 community: I appreciate, and welcome, any suggestions as to what I can add to this FAQ/Guide

Okay, I know I am probably asking a dumb question, my S3 from Sprint has 4.1.1 and I rooted the clockworkmod way that it showed on this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1743780 and in the video. Basically I used Odin and then used the clockworkmod file. I am not sure but from what I read this is a clockworkmod recovery? But all I did was a basic root and everything looks as always (same as sprint no custom rom etc) I just wanted to root for the tethering. Now I just received an update and it keeps popping up as a system update (I am not sure if its to 4.1.2 or 4.2 but, If I run it, will it crash my phone, do I need to temp unroot? or unroot and then update? Is there a step by step on how to update to to the latest without brick after or is it safe to just upgrade... If anyone has any links on this forum that answers this?
(used Odin and clockwork mod to root...just to use free tethering.)

Some have reported that you can use cwm (clockworkmod) to update, but if you have modified Amy sheen fumes or apps, it won't go through. If you want to update the easiest way is to just look for and flash the stock rooted Rom by freeza... you could also unroot, upgrade and reroot, but that's unnecessary... if you do choose to go that route, check the link in my Sig and you can find directions and all files for going back to stock

Hi,
I got a new update today.
No, it is not android L
It said VoLTE improvement and updated stability.
Full firmware is available in sammobile: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/confirm/39231/N900TUVUENK3_N900TTMBENK3_TMB.zip/
If you already updated over OTA to NK3 and want to root without tripping Knox - Use Odin desktop to flash the kernels. It goes in the bootloader section in Odin.
1) Flash the NE6 kernel from here (http://www.mediafire.com/download/q7ri06fz1762zy3/N900TUVUDNE6_KERNEL.tar.md5)
2) Use Towelroot - get it from www.towelroot.com
3) Flash the NK3 kernel back (http://www.mediafire.com/download/t52121ld63gen6r/nk3_kernel.tar.md5)
This is what I did to get root with knox 0x0.
For some reason, I am unable to open the file. is it always like that? Or did it not download properly?
UPDATE: It flashes correctly - it is just a CSC update.
But: flash at your own risk. I am neither responsible nor probably knowledgeable enough to help you if you brick your phone.
I'll do my best though
I wouldn't be surprised if T-Mobile didn't document a newly locked bootoader and the ability to block rooting while disguising this as just a VoLTE update.
Edit: The download is corrupt on my end too.

Took the plunge. Copied it to the cache folder, selected survival mode in SuperSU and updated.
It is just a CSC and Multi-CSC update. Updated successfully, root intact, Knox still 0x0.
It says cant open from PC and phone file explorers. But while updating, it says footer failed (or something like that) for system, kernel etc.
But for CSC and MULTI-CSC, it says successfully updated.
Steps to update: (I am not responsible for anything that happens)
1) SuperSU -> Settings -> Survival Mode (Not sure if necessary, since it only updates the CSC. I did it for safety)
2) Copy file to device (I copied in original cache/FOTA location)
3) Reboot to recovery (stock)
4) Apply OTA update from cache
5) Select the correct file in the cache/FOTA (or wherever you copied) folder
6) After it completes update, press any key to go back to recovery menu -> restart
7) Verify and enjoy.

Thanks bud, i was looking for confirmation that this was a legit build version or if i messed some stuff up. This was the first time i have done an update. I rooted it first hour i had it and havent done any updates because i didnt want to mess with it. I went from NB4 to this NK3. I was expecting to end up on NF9 and was pretty surprised seeing NK3 after it was finished. lol Then googled it and found nothing out there referring to this version, so i was a bit confused.

This is weird. I did the update and it is still NF9.
The funny thing is, the update page on TMobile says that T-Mobile Free Inflight Texting has been added as a new feature. I already had that. I have used it multiple times in flight.
Sammobile has it now. Looks more than just a csc.

Re-rooted again:
1) Flashed the NE6 kernel from here (http://www.mediafire.com/download/q7ri06fz1762zy3/N900TUVUDNE6_KERNEL.tar.md5)

It's exactly the same as before.
Look for how do I root here,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2711073
You unlock bootloader. Flash a custom recovery... I suggest twrp. It will ask you when you exit if you want to root. Say yes.
Boot into android, install supersu if it or superuser aren't there already. (from play store)
Or just flash recovery . Install a rom , likely rooted already.

If it asks to update with a "normal" and "twrp/cwm" option... Try normal first. The other option if that doesn't work.

I tried the normal it didnt work, how I do the second, I pressed it but nothing happened!
I don't think you have twrp installed anymore, or not properly. You've flashed it with fastboot, since updating to lollipop? How did you update to lollipop?
Normal, I never had root before. Upgraded my phone to 5.0 and then i tried to root it
Rooted fine here with normal method. Just had to update super su.
OK, can you please walk us through exactly what steps to Root you took. From the beginning. And we'll see what happened.
?
i havent been able to find the option to disable fast boot so i havent even tried yet but if anyone has let me know

Perhaps even more important than achieving root is whether the BL can be unlocked afterwards - so can it? Has anyone attempted?

zip will be updated next few days, but it definitely works even now.

For now, be careful with unlocking bootloader. There is a good chance to get a brick your phone (already have a case of getting a brick using Motopocalypse).
Work on unlocking boot are conducted on 183.46.15, be patient
Ortli or kkruglov can you please post a screenshot showing your system version? There has been some testing of this on another forum and it didn't work.
Shmaks how did you manage to brick with Motopocalypse? Either it works or it doesn't.
I'm sorry, but this whole thread smacks of BS. First clue? This exploit still uses Towel Root, which has long been proven not to work on .15.

Version of Motorola update doesn't matter, because we are dealing with kernel. Towelroot doesn't work on fresh kernels, but it does on old ones. Exploit simply has to interchange them artfully, then return back as they were. Look at the picture:
P.S. New, more convenient version of main script was published by one of exploit authors, so I think OP will be updated soon with new link. And yes, it works. No doubt!
UPDATE: exploit layout, more detailed.
Here's what I got about script's algorithm at 4pda.ru community discussion, in general:
1) Script crashes moto_crypto.
2) Factory recovery gets replaced by May 1 kernel.
3) Reboot to recovery, but there is kernel instead - it gets booted, and we got vulnerable to Towelroot system under May 1 kernel.
4) We do root job, then quit.
5) Factory recovery returned back.
6) Script starts moto_crypto.
7) Normal system start, as if nothing happened.
W/o moto_crypto crash trick the kernel isn't stable + has no rw rights. Also there are few lines changed in giefroot's *.sh + custom install script. What exactly changed, and what for - I don't know, being not dev )
How is it possible to change the kernel with a locked boot loader? Has anyone actually got this to work? One person tried and it didn't work.

When I try to download, Google Drive shows an error, then finally downloads a .bin file .... Then of course cannot be used.....
And when I try to download from the other posted link.... I get 404 (file not found).......
I tried 3 times, no root, same kernel

They have to be doing this on an unlocked phone. Then, why would they even be using an exploit?

You would name me a Cap, but - via exploit )
I can't translate all that was written at 4pda, where exploit has appeared, but here is in general. HydrogenXS: "The method, I would name it Hydrogen peroxide, is based on giefroot utility. Thanks to zxz0O0 for his hard work, and also to all authors of applications that use giefroot developments."

There are lots of forums how to do this. The firmware is rooted which even makes it easier. It does not trip knox and if you are smart you will use that safestrap you dont want and use it to make an efs backup before changing carrier

I know there are forums and I've even tried them, but none of them permanently changes phone's own csc. I was asking about changing original csc i.e from SPR/SPR/SPR to TMB/TMB/TMB. Please help me out in this regard. Also, tell me how to go back from safestrap to stock original. It is the only reason I'm not installing safestrap as i don't know how to go back to stock firmware with stock recovery.
Thanks in advance.

Well If you have a sprint sim it will change it to sprint the csc stuff is set by what sim you have you could manipulate this on earlier versions of nougat but not now. It is possible to use TMO csc on sprint but you would have to run a safetrap system so you can modify the csc features .xml If you want to go back to stock firmware you simply flash it. Safetrap does not replace the stock recovery. You can still boot to stock recovery with safetrap installed

If I understand correctly... this will allow root, not trip Knox and not give the 80% battery issue. Is this correct?

Root uses combo bootloaders so yes it is limited to 80% battery. If you choose to use pie or oreo you will have safestrap recovery but no root and there will be no battery restrictions
This combo firmware is not meant to be used as everyday firmware. Its only a tool to do certain functions that are not possible on regular firmware

So if I am on Oreo, is there a way to root Oreo on V5 bootloader?
I am mainly looking to use my S8+ as a audio/gaming device, as I use my Note 9 for my everday device. I am usually pretty good with the rooting thing (many years of doing) but this is the first time I`d be using safestrap and not to sure about how this works.
Thank you for your patience.

I seen that. I suppose I should've been more specific. I understand safe strap only. If I flash ChainFires SuperSu zip, could root be obtained?
Is obtaining root on Oreo at all possible, basically is what I'm asking.
