In the past I had a Galaxy Nexus (Toro/LTE) and loved all the custom software, kernels and mods. While this phone obviously isn't as popular (at least with Devs/PowerUsers) as the 6P, it still has the excellent ElementalX kernel, as well as PureNexus ROMS as well as CM builds.. For me, this is plenty for now, and I'm sure we will at least see a few of the "larger" custom ROM teams work on the 5X in time. I am hopeful most of the 6P development can be applied to our "little brother" device.
ANYWAYS, my questions are;
1) What features/developers do you hope to see on the 5X?
2) Why did you choose the 5X over the 6P?
3) What was your previous handset, and how does the 5X compare?

1) I hope paranoid android gets into the mix. I used it with my older android device and with elementalx it was great.
2) Why did I choose 5X over 6P? a) Smaller screen b) $$$ (NOTE: Next time I'll probably get the 6~ because I never realized that people cared so much more for the more expensive device than the little brother. SEE NOTE B)
3) This is world's better. Than my... Don't laugh... iPhone 5. it was only because my android broke and its all I had around other than a feature phone.
NOTE B: See my rant about "Nexus discrimination" at my site nickdaria.com
Development is rapidly growing. Like 5 new ROMs in past week. We have...
Optimized Stock, CM, DU, Omni, Bliss, Resurrection, Cataclysm, Chroma, UberMallow, Mokee, crDroid, Octos, Kalo, CleanCore, Photon, VRToxin, Toblerone
For kernels we have ElementalX, Phasma, Franco, DimFish, Jolee
Other than a couple extra kernels, there's not much more I can ask for. While development started a little slow, it is now in full swing. When we get another price-drop, a couple more kernel devs will likely pick one up as well.
I got mine over the holidays for $329+F/S and for a $20 gift card for BH Video. Then a $20 gift card for Best Buy for using AP with it. Overall, plenty of upside. Im sure development will continue to increase.

Isn't paranoid android unofficially dead? I loved their roms (and halo), but I haven't seen anything from them in a while other than a few posts on reddit saying they were done.

Yeah, I havent seen anything from them. I wasn't a huge fan anyways.
I've been thinking about trying Omni again.
All I'm missing is hellscore kernel. Used it on my N6 with pure NEXUS rom. Great combo.

1) Honestly, the reason that I bought a Nexus was to keep the stock ROM. I of course unlocked the bootloader, flashed TWRP recovery, and changed the kernel, however I bought a nexus because I've spent the entire time owning non nexus phones trying to get it as close to stock as possible. Any mod to the ROM that I do want can easily be done with Xposed and gravitybox. Android pay not working is a downside but I'd rather have my stock experience.
2) Size mostly, price secondly. Now that I've played with the 6P, I've realized that the size isn't bad. I like the increased performance as well as the AMOLED screen. In the near future I will probably purchase it and use it as a work phone
3) My previous phone was an iphone 5S. I hated it. Only used it because i switched off of verizon to t-mobile and my G4 wouldn't work on the GSM network. When compared to the G4 I would say it's a wash. The G4 has a better camera and was a bit smoother, however I was never happy with the LG ROM. Again, always trying to make it more and more like stock.

I have to buy myself a new phone in the next few days and i can't really choose between these 2. They are at the same price here in my country, cheaper than the S6, and both give me reasons why i like/don't like them. I'd buy the OP2 because of the pure android experience, i really like it, plus it has some useful tweaks, the fingerprint scanner, and the metal build. On the other hand, the G4 has that amazing camera, and the better screen. I don't really care about removable batery or the memory card, because if i'll buy the OP2 i'll buy the 64gb version, and if the battery lasts easily all day, no problem. I've read about the touchscreen and the led issues the G4 has, and those make me, somehow, stay away from the G4. Oh, and i won't get myself in that annoying invite system that OnePlus offers, there are some online shops that already have the phone.
What would you choose if you were in my place? I'm looking forward to your answers!
I personally LOVE my LG G4. I have had very little of the screen and lag issues that people were talking about (and after getting myself the 10c update I have literally no bugs at all).
I generally tell people it comes down to the users personal taste when making a decision like this, but anytime the G4 is an option I tend to lend my vote toward it. The camera, screen, sound, and the clean button setup (all being on the backside of the device) all make for a fantastic device and a wonderful user experience.
This is personally the first time in a long time I went with something that was not a Samsung as my main driver and I am SO GLAD that I did....especially now with Root Access and the ability to run Framework Modules this thing on a scale of 1 - 10 is pushing like a 12......seriously, I really do love it that much.
Good luck with your decision though and I am sure you will pick whatever device is right for you.....Just know that both are great devices so do not think I am hating on the OnePlus or anything.....no matter which way you go you are going to end up with a beautiful and power device that will be a pleasure to interact with.

I think you've made my mind. The camera, the screen and the phone itself make me choose the G4. The only problems that have been in my mind for a while are the software (the lg ux), and the display problems that a lot of lg g4 owners have seen , but hopefully this isn't a hardware problem, so it can be fixed with a software update, and if some developers will build a pure android rom for the G4, then I'll be vary happy. Oh, and thanks for your reply!
I've only had my g4 now less than a week and I must say it's a great fone and LG ux is a lot better than touchwiz which I had On my note 2. I do still miss the stylus a bit but the camera and general feel of the fone far out way the lack of stylus. I played about with aosp roms on the note2 but always ended up on tw roms so I'm looking forward to seeing how stock based roms develop here.

So, I have both phones. I couldn't decide because of the reasons you mentioned. In terms of premium the pot is way above g4. But g4 isn't bad either. I'm not so sure if I would say the g4 screen is "better". I am currently using the g4 but because a game I'm playing doesn't work well on the 2. Technically in terms of processing power they are similar. In high end stuff the 2 runs with only 2cores but the adreno430 vs 418 is ofc another story. About the camera, I can tell you it's pretty similar. I think the 2 got the right hardware, the rest is a software story. I would say the g4s cam is better but not ground breaking. But you can ask me anything. Both devices are bl unlocked and rooted. Just pm me

But they went with the SD810.
G-flex 2, 1080 p screen 3-4hSOT
M9, heating and then throttling
OP2 ? we don't know so wait for some good reviews to come out, ones that talk about real world battery life instead of useless loopback tests. No replaceable battery right. The last OPO is cheaper but there were screen tint issues with early batches. Sure, you want to be first in line for a OP2 ?
remember nexus will come out and for someone that wants pure ....given the rather lacklustre showing by flagships this year people are putting a lot of faith (too much) on the 5 inch nexus. They want an updated nexus 5 that came out in 2013. made by LG.
so get yourself some cheap phone until you are ready.

I'm really curious about the new nexus 5, and it could be an option, but i have to buy it until school starts in september, after that i don't think i'll get another chance to buy an expensive phone. So, i'll probably go for the G4, has everything i want in a phone, exept for the aosp rom, but hopefully some developers will do it.

i don't understand why you can't wait. nexus should have everything you want. pure aosp to go
It does make me wonder why Google can't release the nexus in time for back to school.

Hoping is a risk. How long will you wait.
AOSP means you will lose LG's camera interface as well as the image processing which plays a big part in how good the photos turn out. The G4 is one of very few android devices that has a laser auto focus and unique to the G4 the colour sensor. Where is the AOSP code to handle that. If it isn't in the AOSP rom then you will lose the functionality of fast auto focus as well as better white balance detection.
The G4 will be more premium than the nexus without a doubt but going pure has a price. If you get a carrier locked G4, you will have to wait for BL unlock and only then can AOSP roms be developed. Not happened yet but i expect BL unlock will happen in a month going by the G3.
Bottomline: if you want the G4 and its camera then you will have to settle for stock based roms.
Check out AOSP on the G3 to better understand what the tradeoffs are likely to be with the G4.
I'm honestly not sure which phone to choose.
May you roll up some personal views on the matter?
Because right now I am using both phones every second day, and I really can't make up my mind regarding this matter.. So listening to someone else would help.
Im facing that the software on the nexus 5x and the ability to customize it so much more is a huge adventage, however the S6 got some great specs.
So yeh.
Opinions please, if that's allowed to ask for here I would gladly appreciate a nice discussion with personal opinions
Regards!
Wish it were that simple that we could say "sure that's easy go with the 5X" and you'd be as happy as a clam by choosing what we suggest you pick. Since that's not reality only you can decide. You use both phones why can't you decide? Honestly, what can we offer that would sway you one way or the other? Do you really want to base your decision off of what 'we' say rather than 'your own experience' using both devices? Honest questions
I had an S6 from August to this past January before I traded it for a 5x. There are a few things I miss, such as the extra bright screen and overall build quality. The S6 camera is definitely more detailed and faster as well, but I prefer the low light performance of the 5x by far.
All in all, I'm much happier with the 5x as I prefer stock Android vs Touchwiz and being first to get the latest updates.
I'm completely fed up with touchwiz and all of the bloat on Samsung phones. It got to be as bad as HTC sense. And unless you have the newest model of a flagship phone, you are most likely not going to get an update. I have been very pleased with my 5x and no contract and $300 for a brand new phone, I couldn't pass it up.

Nexus. Always Nexus. I have no patience any more for manufacturer's and carrier's crapware. Give me pure, stock Android running on the current reference device.
I am picking me up an s6 for $200 then to decide which is work phone and which will be personal phone.

I get your point here, I do. But my personal experience varies so much, and I'm afraid there are things i've overseen the last 9 days of having them both available. Fingerprint location, build quality, camera features, screen brightness and contrast, saturation etc... so many things on them both that varies, but still makes them good their own way. Software updates, that's a good one mentioned.

Thanks for sharing your experience. After a day of using the nexus, I kind of miss the metal edges on the S6 and the performance which makes the experience butter-smooth. After a day using the S6 I miss the clean Android, the fingerprint-scanner on the back and the amazing low light shots with the camera.
So... gosh im confused.

Unless you trip KNOX and flash custom ROMs - CM is in development, however the exynos chipset seems to be a pain in the ass.
Anyway, thanks everyone. I take all this in consideration and I will keep it in mind when using them both. Hopefully i'll sort out my mind soon.
Keeping it short. Had the s6, it sucked. Hard...
Great build and specs, worthless reception and horrible batterylife. So even though I loved the rest, the basics sucked. The nexus 5x is great, but awfull feel. I hate plastic. But all the rest is awsome. So sticking with it for now.
Wishing you luck !
I'd go with the 6P haha

Thanks for the interpretation. I'm glad to hear I'm not alone judging the plasty feel of it. The vibration aswell, sounds like a child's toy.
Currently using the 5x and got stunned over the well performing battery. Already got 5 h with screen on, using a custom kernel and a few tweaks
That was another point... I'm not into flashing roms on Nexus devices (as I like stock Android) but I had planned to flash CM on the S6. Not researching this before my purchase was a big mistake as I had no idea about the drama with Samsung Exynos chips not being open sourced.. CM will probably never be up to snuff on the S6.

Just to answer you - The way it looks now (I've been closely paying attention) it seems like the development is going forward with the CM build for s6. It will be at least usable pretty soon. Well, it's a guess because they need to reverse engineer the stuff on the phone.
Compared to the nexus devices it's rediclious. I tested cm13 on my 5x and got stunned. So many possibilities and I must confess that I'm obsessed with flashing roms and stuff. That's kind of the reason I chose to buy my nexus. That's probably the best thing ever
You're a power user. Can the OnePlus 3 keep up? Rate this thread to express how "healthy" the development scene is for the OnePlus 3. A higher rating indicates available root methods, kernels, and custom ROMs.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I heard OnePlus released the source for the 3. If its true, the 3 would survive for as long as OnePlus 1
Oneplus released the sources while presenting the OP3. The warranty covers software changes made by the user. This device is all about editing every possible part. Community development strength = 200%
id say the development here soo far is better than the nexus devices.
The community here is amazing!!
It's a bit early to say, but it looks good.
Official CM in just days. Lot's of roms already with good support.
Definitely very alive. I was in the G4 community before; development was a ghost town.
Plus with Dash Charging kernel sources just having been released, there's literally not a single feature we'll be missing out on by during custom ROMs, unlike most phones.
I've heard the non OOS based ROMs have issues with the camera, is this true?
Dash charge is finally out so this is one of the main things holding me back at this point

That's unfortunate. Is there a way to export the OOS camera into a cm based ROM?
Dev support for one plus is excellent
This is what's pushing me toward buying a OP3 over the ZTE Axon 7. The ZTE may have better specs in some areas (ex. full USB 3.0 speeds, more frequency bands, expandable memory, sharper screen), but I've been reading that developer support for ZTE isn't good, at least for their other phones. And it's not like I'm going to really come close to filling up 64GB of space to begin with........just have to nudge the wife into signing off on the expense
One thing I'd be happy if it did come would be Multi Rom that be awesome to have on the one plus 3 So we can have more than one rom to boot back an forth instead of reflashing

OP is without a doubt a better choice if ROM development is important to you. That's why I'm here; I had both the Nexus 4 and 5 - I wanted to stay with the Nexus line, but the 6P had already been out for a while and I didn't want to wait for the next Nexus device. There have admittedly been a few kinks (I'm still battling random reboots), but overall, I think it was a good choice.

You're mirroring my situation almost exactly: I've had the Nexus 5 for about 2 1/2 years now or so, looking to upgrade, but the N6P is closing in on a year old, the new Nexus models are likely to be much more expensive than the N5 was, and I want something I can tinker with but won't be obsolete in 6 months or ignored by the dev community. Hahaha no problem.
The communiti on OnePlus One was great, and so many great ROM-s out there, some had better camera, some better batery, some had this some had that, but on op3, I really have no need to 'touch' anything, great camera, battery life is ok for me, multitasking great, and maybe I'm getting too old for experimenting
I might need a quick, but hopefully detailed if necessary, answer in addition to doing research. My Nexus 6 may have been damaged beyond repair and needs to be replaced immediately.
I'm a long time Nexus user, and have preferred to root, use custom recoveries and ROMs, flash partitions manually, etc. - for a long time.
I've seen the Pixel series is the end-to-end Google phone I was hoping and waiting for, but - is it any less friendly to firmware modding, flashing, rooting, etc. - than the Nexus series was?
I was worried being end-to-end Google they might have placed more restrictions on these type of things, similar to the Iphone, and if so I'd just get another Nexus.
And is it still as easy to swap out GSM sim cards yourself as on the Nexus with the Pixel?
Another factor I would consider is the rumor I read about, but can't remember where. Did Google announce somewhere that they are bringing longer official OS updates to the Pixel devices than the Nexus had?
Thanks in advance!
I would recommend a pixel for your case! they are mod able/ unlockable bootloader. they have a different partition style then the Nexus devices did so there a small learning curve, but nothing you shouldn't be able to do just read the how tos and you'll be on your way.
The options of ROMs and such is pretty good if I had to give it a letter grade I'd give it a B lots of quality options.... but not as many as like the Nexus s 4g used to have I could flash a rom every other day and still not try them all lol
Sim card is just as easy as any phone to swap and replace and they are factory unlocked/Google fi ready!!!
And as far as Android updates they are the first and fastest to get updates and development previews released so that's a good thing from both a rom development standpoint as well as a security standpoint
I've had my pixel for 2 years the 128gb and it's built pretty tough has great battery life still very fast and I haven't even considered upgrading to any of the phones that have came out in that time I maybe upgrading to a pixel 3 at the start of 2019 if its a considerable upgrade if not just get a used pixel 2
Hope this helps enjoy the phone if you pick one one I love mine!

Looks like I will be ordering a pixel 2 xl, i believe, asap - they are impossible in the local area here on. I wish I could get my old phone working until this Librem from Purism ships, so I could finally try something pure linux.
Now I should see about ROM availability for the new pixels, but it might be better to keep it stock for a while unless there's a great recommendation even for the latest offering from google.
Thanks for the help
Pixel 2 XL Stock is good. There's plenty of roms to try later...
So, I made it from 2014 until today with my Nexus 6.
Was going to just do a battery swap and see how many more years I could ride this thing. Couldn't have done it without LineageOS.
My 3a XL should be here Friday.
I'll probably tear open my N6 to swap the battery just to see if I can keep it alive a little longer. But it would be interesting to see the longest someone has kept the same phone.
I also just came from Shamu. Unfortunately I broke the screen on my first (still have it) so I didn't technically make it that long on a single phone. I keep all my phones though. Still have my Nexus One, though it's been years since I've even powered it up.
You're going to love the 3a. It feels so much better in the hand than Shamu and everything is so much faster. And don't even get me started on the battery life. I consistently got 5-6 sot on my builds on Shamu (4 ish on stock) and now I get double that.
Consistent
Here is my normal at about 50%
I locked my bootloader out of boredom last week running latest complete stock with these results.
Good device for sure. I have 3a xl from T-Mobile fyi
Yea, I came form a Nexus 5x (had it for 2 and a half years) and the improvements over that are insane. I no longer have to keep it charging constantly and it's so much smoother.

The only downer right now is the lack of twrp but everything else about the phone is amazing.
It came today. Playing with it now. I really like how it feels in my hand. The Nexus 6 was horribly uncomfortable.

Exactly. This solved the slightly too wide issue Shamu had. I will say the smaller screen will take a little getting used to. I still find myself wishing for a slightly larger one fairly often.
I am switching to 3a from original MotoX running JellyBean mostly due to the battery not lasting long enough. I had a spare Moto X that I bough used for $100, this one runs KitKat and battery life is better (I rarely used/charged it) but it has problems running Google Maps, so considering current promotions on Amazon I finally made a move.
How do you know your phone is too old? When Chrome Browser has a menu item that says there will be no further browser updates due to OS not being supported. This is what I have on JellyBean, the one on KitKat is still being updated but inability to use Google Maps and a lot of new apps no longer being compatible finally pushed me to upgrade.
Og pixel xl about to be unsupported no more security updates after december so here you go moved on to a pixel 3a xl. I found a Great deal on amazon 150 off for a used 6 month old phone pretty satisfied.:good:
Got my P3aXL Friday. Great device.
But, I could see getting by with my Nexus 6 another year or so on LineageOS and a new battery.

Long time no see... Just ordered my 3a xl... are you still doing roms or kernels these days on that german site?
I have a kernel thread here. As soon as all the Rom issues get worked out Velocity will be alive and well again here as well.

Great... and your on xda which just makes it all easier for us end users. I think I am the only one of your original 3 n6 testers thats still messing with roms. Once I get mine and settle in maybe I will test for you again as those private velocity builds we tested made the n6 screaming fast

So, I made it from 2014 until today with my Nexus 6.

Dang dude, that's impressive.
I got a LG G3 in 2014, but moved to a Honor 8 after a couple of years before moving to the 3a XL a couple of months ago. Both those phones where rooted, but the manufactures were slow with updates and eventually stopped updating them. I ran custom ROMs on both, but eventually even those dry up, especially when a new major Android version comes out and the manufactures doesn't update the drivers to the new OS. Perhaps I'll have better luck with the 3a.
The Nexus 6 got lots of support from the custom ROM community. I'm hoping this 3a will be supported close to the same.

Will be by me as long as I own this. The main reason I moved in from Shamu was Pie was never functional to my standards on it. Many things never worked right and the battery was much worse than Oreo.

Unfortunately, there isn't much in the way of development on the 3a series. There is certainly more development on the flagship 3/4 level than the 3a, but even that level is less than the Nexus 6 - at least in the heyday. I don't think that will ever change. The good news is that raw Pixel OS isn't bad and obviously we can root our phones and have access to some development and modifcations, but it will never be at Nexus 6 levels.

Shamu was no cake walk to get fully functional builds on for the first 3-4 months after it came out and that was a basic 32 bit device with none of the recent security, partition, and other fun Google has thrown at us with Android 10. Shamu was also one of (if not the best) devices you could buy in 2014. Development will get sorted out at some point (soon hopefully) and when it does there will be at least 1 Rom for these which is all I need.
LineageOS is still kicking out updates for the Nexus 6.
I know a battery swap is doable, but a little more than what I want to dig into. Otherwise, I had no real reason to move on.

That may be, but Pie Roms on Shamu were never fully bug free and the battery was never as good. I spent months trying to get all the issues resolved and never did. The reduced battery youre seeing is almost certainly from running a Pie Rom and not because the battery is too old. Just prior to getting the 3a I was running my Oreo build and still getting 5-6 hrs SOT on it vs roughly 2.5-3 on any/every Pie build I made (or tried).
