Hi-
So I've been looking at getting an Android device, as I'd finally like to leave apple. I have considered the Samsung S4 and Xperia Z, but they don't suit (too expensive, or too big).
However, I recently saw this device on sale (in Australia - $388), and the spec's have impressed me a lot. It's the international version (32GB, 13MP camera).
My priorities are:
1. Use as an eReader
2. Decent Battery
3. Run remote desktop apps (VNC/LogMeIn)
4. Play games (mainly SNES/n64 emulators)
I've noticed the development scene for this phone is not big. What does this mean for me? Just less roms available?
I'm also concerned as I've read the camera isn't great... Is that right? Have any of the new roms fixed it?
Also- will multiview be possible? I know it isn't on stock- but can any ROM's do it?
Cheers
1-4, yes yes yes yes.
Custom roms are working great,no issues.we have quality over quantity.
Multi view is not for g,but for g pro.don't know if a value pack with goodies from g pro will be released for g.i hope it will.
Camera is decent, don't expect miracles in low light conditions.but on normal light conditions,it's just great.
no phone can replace a dedicated camera, remember that.

Hi, found that you are running CM 10.1, could you give us some reviews about battery? For moderate use (like music, surfing, and small games as angry bird, temple run), how long can the battery go?
Thanks.

Some games wiping battery in one and half hours.
It's better than stock, at least for me,with a litle tweaking.
For moderate usage you will get 1 day easily.I'm a heavy gamer, though, got 5 hrs of real racing 3 .this is great for me.
No complains here.
Moderate usage for me is this :
20-30 minutes talk
Texts
3 hrs browsing(including youtube) on 3g/LTE
1.5hr or so of gaming like you said(not fancy 3d games)
Music in the background
Battery lasts from morning till dawn without any problems
Seriously 5 hours? That's unreal :-O
i will post screens when i will let the phone settle for a while, easter it's coming here and i will be off for 3 days
It's very important what apps/services are running in the background and the network signal.I use greenify to be sure nothing i don't want is not running in the background

From 4.1 and above, LG's stock ROMs have their own implementation of Xperia small apps. Technically IT IS multiwindow, but only for like calculator, web browser, etc. haha. Still, better than nothing! Goodluck in making your choice
Thanks for the responses everyone.

I think I saw this- quickview or something. It seems ok, but not exactly what I need.
I was sold on it, after everything you all told me, but then when I went to get the device- I just found it too square/large. It's similar to the Xperia Z in size, and the squareness makes it quite bulgy in my jeans. So I'm affaid on size alone- it's no longer an option for me
after spending a while with the G, i´d avise you to go with a mainstream device....
yea the G looks nice, but the camera sucks, battery sucks and with mainstream stuff you get faster updates, more community support and so on
Yeah right,a premium device sucks more than a mainstream. do you realise what you are saying?it's like ,man,go for renault, not mercedes.
Again, why would i need updates if the original software has no issues?just for the sake to say, hey,i have the latest firmware.no visible improvements, but, what the heck,i have the latest.
To be honest, gesture ui from lg is the smoothiest experience compared to similar devices from major competitors(s3,onex).heck,compared with a nexus 4,which is the "pure" android experience, there is no difference.an i compared some flagships, not medium devices.if you advice someone to go for mainstream,it means you never had such devices.in order to trully enjoy android experience, you need at least dual core,1gb ram, decent gpu and at qhd or more display.
Tell me what mainstream device meets all these requirements.

Camera solution:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2065799
I will admit, camera is not as good as other devices, but that tweak offered by Epic_ actually helps greatly with clarity/quality.
Battery:
Root and unlock your phone using universal root / manual + FreeGee.
Install Titanium Backup - remove the bloatware (LG MLT in particular)
Install Greenify - greenify your apps
Disable Fast Dormancy..
Battery life is insane after doing all this. Phone deep sleeps properly.. 2 hours screen time so far, wifi always on / 3g + data on and I'm on 75%, which is on par if not beats the other "mainstream devices" - (SGS3, One X..)
The build quality of this phone is also amazing - observe this drop test of the phone.. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cj_F_qc5cds
I actually don't mind that there isn't a lot of ROM development for this phone.. I actually really like LG's stock offering. QSlide is actually quite useful.
And this is coming from me who came from a Nexus S lol

It was on sale at JB HiFi I bought the same for the same price. Unsure if the promotion is still on (or if it was a price error nationwide)

Thanks I checked with jb it's still $388 but you have to buy with a "no contract" telstra plan

Hey,
so I just watched a review about the Oppo Find 7a. And I have to say that it I felt in love with it.
First I wanted to buy a LG-G3 because of its awesomeness, but know that I found the Find 7, I feel like I should buy this instead of the G3.
But there are a few things that I'd like to ask you before.
- Where's the difference between the 7 and the 7a? I heard the 7a owns a slower CPU/GPU, a smaller battery and a smaller resolution. And I also heard that the 7a seems to have the better display, because its more saturated, brighter and overall the viewing experience should be better than on the 7. Is that right?
- Will there be custom roms? I think I won't like the ColorOS, because I'm using "stock" android since 2 years now and I got pretty used to it. So I'd like to flash a custom rom, running KK4.4.2 (Omni,CM, ..). What do you think?
There are many things that I like on the 7 (MaxxSound, SD Slot, ..) that the G3 will not own. I am pretty unsure if I go with the G3 to get guaranteed custom roms and take out that it doesn't have such nice features as the 7, or I go with the 7 and maybe don't get custom roms :/ Whats your opinion?
for the differences between 7a and 7 is best to check here:
http://en.oppo.com/products/find7/#find7-specs
difficult to compare displays at this point because find 7 is not available yet. I saw that article with display comparison somewhere on the net, but these were pre-production units ant things may change by the time find 7 is available
custom roms for find 7a are already available (cm 11s port, gummy rom, omni, I heard MIUI will be available) so am sure that find 7 will get them too...
I switched from LG G2 to find 7a and must say I do not regret it..display is great, sound as well, phone is snappy...
was just one of that unlucky guys which got units with yellow tint at the bottom of the screen. but have already contacted oppostyle and agreed with them that if the tint will not go away within one week, they will replace the phone
hi,
I bought my selve a find 7a and i can tell you that it is one of the better phones i have owned.
personally i think that on this moment the 1440p screen in the find 7 will be to demanding for other internal components.
and about the roms, i've been flashing some now and ican tell you that even in this beta stage, they all run almost flawless.
i wish you good luck deciding.
The find 7a has some great hardware but so far was a mediocre choice in terms of software.
Thanks to the recent wave of custom ROM goodness though it's become a extremely viable option.
IMO the hardware is solid and holds its own with anything available now, the software not so much. I cant say for certain but IMO the alpha roms all of which I have now tried show extremely great promise and its my belief that the software side of the equation will be as solid as the hardware sooner rather than later. I would say that were I on the fence now I would wait for the 7 to get a little closer before I bought in. It may be you want to go that way (or not) and you will have answers very soon on the worthiness of the upgrade from 7A.
Thank you all so far!
So, it's not long until LG will present their new G3. I will wait til the final release, when the final specs are published. Then I have a direct comparison between those two.
But it seems like I will choose the F7/a because of the MaxxSound feature and for expandable memory which LG obviously won't implement to the G3. And if you all tell that you're looking forward to custom roms on the F7, then there's another reason for me to pick it

Well, there are multiple reports suggesting that the G3 will have a microSD slot. I mean.. it will most probably support UHD recording.. and where do you expect anyone to store all that data?
Not so familiar with MaxxSound, but I tested the 7a a few days ago and I was super pleased, just as tested by GSMarena.
As for G3, there are reports on it having a 1W speaker, and that's gonna be loud too.
So.. IF what I said were to be true, then the G3 being a smaller (and possibly lighter) device would be a winner. End of the day, the cost also matters.
Waiting for announcement here as well...
Keep in mind that MaxxSound or MaxxAudio (or whatever it was called) goes away if you install a different ROM. Some features such as double tap to open are in some of the ROMs, but some might not be.

I don't think that it is so hard to add it to a custom rom or is it? I mean ROM-makers do/did incredible stuff.

Hey guys,
I need to decide between the LG G4 and the Oneplus 2. I really like the expandable memory and battery life of the G4, but the Oneplus has a great processor and lots of development. So I'm interested to know what you like and don't like about the G4. What should I know about the phone in considering it? There isn't much ROM or Kernel development from what I see here, how do you like what is available? How easy is it to root compared to Samsung, HTC, and Oneplus? How customizable is it? Can you simply OV/UC?
Any feedback is appreciated!
I had the same choice has you. I choosed G4 two weeks ago for a lot of reasons. (I had a Note4)
Problem : Touch default which will be correct in the next update
I prefer G4 against Oneplus2 for : Expandable memory, battery removable, more stable CPU/GPU, great screen, great photos/videos. Good battery.
I haven't root the phone actually, but I have downloaded the bootloader unlocker key on LG website. In fact root seems very easy.
Root is pretty simple and with an unlockable bootloader coming for most if not all variants the g4 development will be booming soon...i love the camera and the overall smoothness of my g4 and plan on keeping it for a long while

Unlockable bootloader...usually draws devs as a workaround is not needed to install custom roms/kernels...also root is an easy process...also i owned the original optimus g the g2 g3 and all had great developement...i will probably be an lg mobile buyer for life...plus an unlocked bootloader on such a powerful device just screams for attention
I highly doubt there'll be much development for the g4. And obviously there'll be way more for the op2. So if you buy a phone to flash roms all day long I think the decision is simple. For me the g4 with root and Xposed is perfect. I wouldn't flash anything else than stock on it if I got payed for it.

Agreed.
The reason we used to flash roms daily was to fix faults and improve things which usually broke other things...
G4 on latest update seems pretty much perfect.

That's great, for now. But when Lg stops supporting the G4 in about a year, I'd like there to be continued dev.
Additionally, there are things I'd like to tweak to make the phone more suited for my use (gov/io, clock speed, processor voltage, wifi seek interval, etc) that I dont think I can do with xposed or with stock.
How much customizability is there with lg stock? What about the Kernels already available?

I'm happy leaving voltages etc alone. It works great as it is for me. Maybe check the dev section for progress but sounds like one plus 2 might suit you better.
The plan I'm on allows a new phone yearly so so fading dev support was never an issue.

I got a private message that really helped me a lot from Zilol. I'm posting it here for others who may be considering the same thing, with Zilol's permission of course
I would choose the G4 if it was overall experience and stability. But root and everything about KDZ is horrible if u are used to nexus-like devices, the G4 is way more trouble and all about being careful and a lot of more work as well. TWRP got erased and if u boot into recovery (stock), it automatically does a factory reset with wiping media too (I didnt know neither of those 2 factors) and I lost my internal storage. I was so mad, I gave the 1+2 a shot. Well, compared to the G4 the 1+2 feels like a unfinished buisness. The battery life isnt really above average. I would guess the SD810 to be the culprit but thats not the case. Its something about standby time, not OST but I guess that could be fixed by a software update. OxygenOS feels like an unfinished buisness, lacking several important features and a certain degree of stability. When I updated to 2.0.2, I lost the search bar in "recents" and "clear all apps" was gone as well, which just makes no sense, since u dont have an option to activate it, at least I didnt found it. The next thing is camera. On short distance its fine and compareable to the G4 but under low lights its another story. the photos arent as sharp as on the G4 when zoomed in but that could be the difference in megapixel count. but the biggest problem (just discovered like 2 mins ago) its just bad when it comes to distance shots. Because the infinite focus doesnt seem to work. When I manually focus, there is a short period where its sharp but when the focus is fixated its not sharp at all. I like in the 27th floor with a whole city to my feet and the picture quality differences speaks for themselves, especially at low light. otherwise the 1+2 cam is fine but not to take picture in the distance properly is an issue, maybe it will get fixed through an update.
I recommend the G4. I like stock android but in my opinion the LG UX was good to go. Its really not that much of a big deal. The cam is great, the battery life fair and u can swap battery and expand storage. The 1+2 does better at flashing and u dont loose warranty through BL unlock, only time will tell. Once they fix fingerprint for CM roms or until M is out and FP becomes native, I cant recommend 1+2 over G4. Or atleast they have to update oxygenos bc the current state is problematic, maybe CM roms are better but right now they lack laser-autofocus and fingerprint so thats a no-go for me. On the other hand OOS 2.1 will be out by the mid of the month, so maybe its worth the wait since its a 2.1 bigger update. Im positive 1+ will give their best but at the end of the day only real life performance counts even if they put much effort in it.
When it comes to build quali I prefer the 1+2 over the G4. The leather back is awesome but the chrome finish on the sides isnt my thing. both feel really good in the hand tho but the alu sides of the 1+2 makes it feel more premium. If u choose the 1+2 btw, be aware of the style swap covers. I bought it in china in the experience store, so Im talking about oem accessories. I bought the rosewood and kevlar back but they are thicker and make the phone more bulky. The standard sandstone covers finishes with the alu sides but the others stand out a little bit. Could be an aestethic problem.

I've been struggling to make a decision between the G3 and the G4. The G4 obviously is the newer device with the better specs, but I didn't see any (official) cyanogenmod support yet for it, whereas the G3 has that going for it already. Having some custom roms available is a killer feature for me in a device. I already read that even only the european version (I'm from Germany) of the G4 can be rooted - is that the reason why there are next to no custom ROMs or kernels at all?
Do you recommend the G3 if I'm going for customizability or is the G4 going to get CM support eventually?
Thanks in advance for any help

We flash things using FlashFire since we can't install TWRP. No idea about roms, I don't use them.
If you're looking for strictly customization you won't find much for the G4. Maybe you'd be satisfied with what's available as far as themes, Xposed, etc.
You can change things up quite a bit, but it's pretty far from a custom rom or kernels. If you're not in a rush maybe wait it out a bit to see if the G4 scene improves. In my opinion it's the much better device out of the two. If anything when you do buy the prices could be lower.

I would also like to add that flashing roms can get old after a while. On my G2 and previous phones I was constantly flashing and changing things. Seemed like everything was buggy in one way or another. In the end I was happier with a nice phone where everything worked the way it should.
With the G4 I'm pretty happy with the stock software, sure I rooted and changed a few things appearance wise, and removed a lot of bloat ware. I'm stuck with a stock rom and recovery(stupid Verizon model), but that's ok!

@rick09 Why do you think it's better? Other reasons besides performance?
But the G3 should still be a good phone, right? Currently, I've got an HTC One M7, on which the battery lift has gotten quite horrible... Now I don't really know what to get - I've thought about these (In brackets my concerns about them):
Moto X Play (No replaceable battery)
Oppo R7 Plus (Last gen processor, Huge but unreplacable battery)
LG G3 (Nice overall, but the G4 is newer)
LG G4 (No CM support yet)

Ok look, if you're going to buy one of these phones so go with the G4 H815 (not any other model! because of unlockable bootloader) it will get the cm very soon, the development is very fast,
BUT if custom roms are you're thing and you can't live without it so don't but lg at all, go for the oneplus 2 or the new nexus devices the n5x or the n6p

No, I'm totally fine with CM, but will it really be actively developed given that only a small portion of the G4 users can really use it?

Thanks for your help How's your battery life? That sweet 4100mAh on the Oppo R7 Plus is really tempting

Oh, I'm totally charging overnight. I also have a pretty huge powerbank with me all day, so that shouldn't be a problem. On my current M7 though, when my screen is on, my battery even drains while charging

Why not just get your m7 battery changed then and stick with it ?
after two years its not going to be as good as new.

The M7 is by no means a bad device but changing the battery is nearly impossible on that thing. Also, because of a hardware failure which affected the whole M7 series, all my low-light photos look like this which renders the camera totally unusable is some situation. The strongest reason for me wanting to get a new device is that my employer will pay it though, so I'm going to get a new phone anyways, it's just that i've only got a certain budget and the G4 would fit the bill, I think

Service centre ? they do this work. replacing a camera module is no big deal either.

I'm not sure I'm even allowed to root the device since it's from my employer - Otherwise, the G4 is just an upgraded version of the G3, isn't it?

Why do you wanna know? I just compared multiple phones (like the ones I already listed above) and I just like LGs approach when it comes to the removable battery and the choice to expand the storage via microSD

That's what i wanted to know because some people don't care about that. Also you did not mention any other brands so was curious.
The G3 comes in two variants, 2 & 3GB RAM with storage of 16 & 32GB. The 3GB is the better choice. They did away with this in the G4 and its just 3GB and 32GB like the G2 and optimus G earlier for storage.
The G4 has a much better camera than the G3 which is the same one used in the G2 and flex models. The G3 is a capable auto shooter but the manual controls on the G4 mean more control and better low light ability. The aperture is 80% brighter.
The screen on the G4 is also better and brighter. This you will have to see for youself to decide. Then decide whether you are ok with the slight curve on the G4 that the G3 does not have. Roms will come in time but i see a number of people who are not bothered.
Have you seen the V10 ? will be more expensive since its 4GB and 64GB only. and the manual controls of the stills camera carry over to the video side as well. This right now isn't possible on the G4. The V10 is a little bigger though.
How much battery do you need ? mention your expected SOT/runtime.
I have H815 and have root, unlocked bootloader and flashed TWRP, please, get the G4. Getting a G3 is pointless. Think of the G4 as an optimised G3.
I had the g3 for a few days and it was full of lag and heat. Screen was also bad!
The G4 is a totally different phone. Everything about it is better except for size.

I did hear about the V10, of course, but that will, at least on release, be way out of my price range of about 400-500€ I can use from my employer. Also, I can't add from my own money because law restrictions and stuff.
Battery-wise, I'm quite the heavy user - I commute about 2 hours a day by bus and have the screen on almost all the time, but battery's not really a concern for me as I have a 13k mAh powerbank and the possibility to charge at work.
I was also considering a Galaxy Note 3 or 4, as they also have microsd and a swappable battery but meh, it's TouchWiz. Also it's a teeny tiny bit too expensive for my budget.

Hello everybody.
I'm looking to buy this phone (new) as a daily driver. I know its kinda old, so I would like to ask is it still worth it to buy this phone? I don't use much apps and use my phone for texting, browsing, reddit, calls etc...
I see that there are a lot of roms for this phone, so i would like to ask are they reliable and up-to-date? Or have they been abandoned? I would like to buy a phone and be set with it for next 5+ years.
I would like to buy a phone with removable battery so my other option is Samsung xcover 4s.
Thanks in advance.

Custom 64bit roms for this device currently have a bug with the camera
If you can get your hands on one look at the Moto g7 play on ebay
It's updatable to stock android 10 and probably just as cheap as this device second hand or refurbished

Effects any camera app
May have slight green tint in photos
May only be be able to take a certain amount of photos before phone/app needs restarting
Video recording may not work in some apps or may not save file correctly
QR code scanning may not work correctly
The above list is a rough bug list and may vary on a device by device basis & rom version & apps being used

Thank you for the excellent reply. I'm quite happy at the moment with the Stock Oreo on my G5 which I recently got A-grade refurbished at a decent price as my old Moto G3 is getting a bit tatty. It seems that my old G3 is better supported at the moment as I'm running 3 different Android 10 Custom roms all working good(Floko/crDroid/Havoc).
It's a shame that crDroid seem to only cover the G5 Potter and Sanders

Thank you guys. Moto G7 is a bit too large for me as i would like something below 5.5. All the other phones that i've looked at are upgradeable to Oreo or Pie at best. Xcover 4s is upgreadable to Android 10, so i think ill go with that one. And all of the custom roms for other smartphones i've looked at, like LG G3 or G5 seem to have some bugs, or they are not up to date. I don't know is there a point in installing something like LineageOS 14, if that rom is out dated and has security holes in it.

Moto g7 play screen is 5.7 Inch but probably worth the extra screen size compared with other options
LineageOS 14.1 for this device (along with stock rom) is only 32bit so you are limited to only arm-eabi armv7 apps as apposed to later devices which are armv8 and support arm64 (64 bit) out the box

I've done some research and G7 for European market does not have removable battery, and there aren't any i can buy locally. I would like to buy locally because the shipping adds to the price. What about LG G5, would you recomend it if i put some stable and official rom on it?
Thanks in advance.
