Firmware Update Questions - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) Q&A, Help & Troubl

A few days ago I purchased a new SM-P600 and have been getting to know my device. It has downloaded a firmware
update which I have not installed yet. l can't seem to find any comprehensive info on what exactly the new update offers, like what sorts of changes or improvements should I expect? Will the interface look different? Has anyone taken any pictures or are there any tutorials ? l haven't made any changes to the device yet other than downloading some apps. l haven't ever updated or rooted a tablet before, so I want to make sure I don't screw it up. Any info or suggestions would be appreciated.

Are you on kitkat? Of so, it is most likely the lollipop update. You can see reviews and screen shots in this forum. Mixed opinions, but personally, I think it's a very good update.
Updating over the air like you have done is safe. It will not damage any data or files unless you deliberately do a factory reset or the tablet switches off in the middle of the update.

Apparently I have Jelly Bean and it's an update to Lollipop 5.1.1 I'm not concerned about data or anything since I haven't created/stored anything on it yet. Just installed a few basic apps and set up my email.
One of the things I'm encountering reading the threads is that a lot of people have rooted or made changes to their device and I'm wondering how that affects functionality. I'd like to see/read a review from someone that can show how the stock update functions in comparison to what I currently have on it. I just think I should make some decision before I start to get used to this version and to store stuff on it.
Overall I'm happy with it as it functions now. I'm only noticing two issues. It seems to give me battery life of about 5 hours. I have turned off a lot, and turned brightness down, but perhaps there are more things I should be doing to optimize the battery. The other problem is handwriting doesn't want to function with Dolphin browser. Seems to be working in fine in every other app.

Rooting has nothing to do with the update. 5.1.1 is a very major OS update from Jellybean. It has a different UI, and better, more fluid experience (at least for me). If you are an Spen user then there are major improvements, themselves worth the upgrade.
You can root or not, as you wish, whether you update or not. If you want to see what the update looks like, you will find comments, screenshots and videos if you google p601 lollipop

Review on Tigra ROM for N7100

Hi,
I am new with this Android and Gadget stuff, so I am in the seniors guidance and advices. Anyway, this is my first thread and I am learning and entering the more adventurous domain in managing my Android devices. But the subject of exploration is so huge. For a start, I am testing on Rooting and Flashing a new ROM to my N7100. So, my first ROM is Tigra V2.4. Just had it done 2 days ago from this post.
Tested it, played with it, it work great on my device. Thank you to the team who work hard for it!
Refer: Tigra Rom Thread
Enuf introduction, Now, to the main part of of the this thread. I am a bit confuse on the version differences between Tigra ROM v2.4 and v4.
As what I have learned and read, I get more confuse about it. Thus, is there anyone able to differentiate the differences between the 2 ROM?
tested it and share the experiences?
My review on v2.4:
No problem during Flashing. Work fine. But the reboot take longer. I wonder why.
Interface work fine, as like Note 3. or 4.3 Jelly Bean.
Settings functionality work just as great as the original. no bugs found yet.
Screen or interaction work fine and smooth. but at time i do get a lagged. or frozen. sometimes even at the lock screen mode. but i can live with it. it not much of an issue, the phone work as normal less than 1 minutes.
Battery life? it last longer than my original N7100 stock ROM (4.1).
There few bloatwares that I wish i could uninstall it. Like Evernote. it annoying. I couldn't even disable it. i don't use Evernote. nothing against it. I have what i need.
No problem with my WIFI or HSDPA+ connection or modem. work fine.
The SNote app dont seem to sync with my Samsung Account. I have few SNOTE files, it not reflecting to my device currently, i have my Note 8 as a backup for some of my SNOTE files. Thus i have to redo again. or... export and import to the phone. Yet to try that.
Scrapbook app, i find it to be useless and annoying. could not uninstall it. SNote better.
Camera, nothing much. the same as Stock ROM for N7100. no extra features.
The Note 3, SPen touch menu, work great.
OTA app for ROM updates, doesn't work. try to update the v4 using it, but failed. Couldn't even get to see the error message to understand the reason for it. the prompt box was too fast.
That all i can think off at the moment.
Oh, I read and study all the seniors posts before I attempt of doing anything such as above. I mean the Rooting, the Flashing. Lots of great advices. But most are too advance for me, I couldn't understand a word they wrote. Hahaha! learning! will catch up soon enough.
So, back to my main questions, what the different with v4? I am curious. I read some of the thread, and seem there lots of issues with the v4. and some of the features is no longer available from v2.4. Learning the differences, able to make me evaluate the need for me to upgrade it. currently, the version 2.4 work fine. no complaint yet from me.
I also noticed, some users actually change ROM that frequents. Wow. I wonder how you (the seniors) manage it? I mean, it take so much time for me to actually test the ROM and reinstall all my other apps just to make sure it working fine.
Cheers! thank you.
Thanks for the review it was helpful

Since i don't get the update, i want to ask something to someone that already update....
What's the different UI, battery life, camera, etc compare to the 4.2
Sorry about my grammar
- 4.3 UI looks like xperia z1 ui. And has theme downloadable from Sony select
- One hand keyboard
- Messiging app.contacts app nice changes
-Battery much better.
- Camera app changed. And more options.
-small apps. Now u can open more than one small app on the same time.
- x reality (not sure)
- Many many other improvements

Seems smoother. NO x reality engine.... BRAVIA engine 2, don think that will change even with 4.4..... so far so good overall
I like how it looks and how smooth is it, but for me there still many bugs on this versión, my pone stucks, and when browing on chrome also, i had to push the reset button 2 times already, camera is better on 4.2 and on 4.2 versión .244 was so so much better. no stucks, no bugs for me, smooth great camera, so I decided to go back to 4.2 and ill w8 for sony to improve the 4.3 or launch the 4.4

I agree about the camera being better before the 4.3 update. I was thinking, after testing the camera once I updated to 4.3, that I wish I could switch back to 4.2. But you say you went back to 4.2? How do you do that? I have about zero knowledge of hacking/modding/custom firmwares/etc, so forgive me if it is supposed to be common knowledge. If you do decide to help me out in switching back to 4.2, perhaps it would be better to send a private message, instead of cluttering up this topic? Otherwise, though, I think I might just find a good alternate camera app from the Play Store.
But anyway, I do think overall, Android 4.2 was better. I don't think Sony really spent much time optimizing 4.3 for the Xperia ZL.

You can downgrade using Flashtool. You can try using the search box too. Many of us here have spent many (many) months and many hours per day to get to know and learn some about these basic operations and tweakings, and to not brick our devices in the attempt.
Please do a bit of researching and reading n.n
BTW, I think I'll wait for KIT KAT too. Looks like it's the hassel free bet.

Thanks for the suggestion. I searched around on this site for a little while and on Google yesterday. I'll look into the Flashtool thing too. The main risk that kind of drives me away from doing anything like rooting or what have you, is the chance of bricking my phone. I spent alot of money on my new ZL(a lot for me anyway), so I think for now I will probably just wait until Kit Kat like you. I think I read that Sony will be improving the camera when they release Kit Kat for the Z series phones, as well as some UI improvements, so it sounds as though they know the camera became slightly worse after 4.3. I hope anyway. But thanks for the help. :good:

You're welcome.
Actually, you don't need to know much. But it'd be useful to know more. You can be perfectly fine with a rooted stock ROM, like the 4.2.2.
Now, If you want "the best ROM", that can be a lot of researching, reading, flashing, testing and reflashing.
I'd suggest you to stay with the ROM Sony provides and that you just root it, when there's a easy way (like for the 4.2.2 rom).
There can be lot's of tweaks to do, there can be lot's of root apps to use; but almost all of them just need root. Nothing else. And most tweaks' benefits are not as noticeable as they were for earlier devices with less powerful hardware... So, not much to do there anyway.
I only use a little bunch of root apps, for example:
FullScreen (to play games full screen, mostly)
Rebooter (DoomLord's)
Dynamic NavBar (I use it with FullScreen)
ROM Toolbox Pro (to backup, uninstall, disable, etc some apps)
Disable Services (good to kill unwanted services like "Google Analytics Service")
AutoStarts (really usefull to help control what apps start with the system)
Set CPU (For cpu profiles to save some battery juice)
Avast's Anti Theft feature (quite important)
Avast's Backup app (quite usefull to restore/share apps's data and setings having several devices)
And some others.
With these I tweak the system a bit and make the UI a little more like I'd like it to be. The UI is fine, I'd just like the stupid navbar would hide itself by default when gaming n.n
Well, I got to this conclusion after checking out a lot of ROMs, and their pros and cons; that I'll better do my own little tweakings and the ROM is fine. Haha
Enjoy your time actually using the device. It's already -quite- fine. The 4.3 and 4.4 will make it much, much better, though!
The ZL has a lot of future and you did a very good bet by buying it. It's very beautiful.
Check out the apps I mention, you can learn some by reading what each is for.

928C Kenya 6.01 update

Hey, shocking, got the update this morning.
Ok. It's actually a BIG update. It's changed the systems interface a lot - even though looks-wise the changes are subtle.
It's very deep, there's New stuff everywhere.
Initial experiences: the update was painless. However, you are then promoted to update almost everything else. E.g. You will have to update your themes. All of them.
The nice thing is, you'll be promoted what else to update depending on the state of your phone.
This is where a BIG thing comes in.
If you're currently decrypted, you will have to decide whether you want to stay decrypted or not.
If you update whilst you're decrypted, you stay decrypted with no way to undo that. And I think, if you go into the update non-decrypted, you won't be able to decrypt after.
They give you a whole warning spiel on the PC update. That's anther thing-the update is so deep, I would suggest you do PC connection rather than straight OTA.
As far as usability - it's smooooooth! And quick. And light on the battery - unless, I've read, you've tripped knox.
I did not factory reset, I did wipe cache, I'm fully stock.
Which brings me to the last note. I use Package Disabler Pro to disable apps. It's very powerful apparently so if you're using it YOU MUST ENABLE ALL APPS before you update otherwise the update won't take, or worse, will strand you in the middle of it and I have a feeling you won't find an easy way out....They've changed everything it feels.
It's a beautiful, silky update. I'm enjoying it a lot.

Fully stable and functional OS/ROM for P600 (Note 10.1 2014 Edition)?

Hello all
I'm a newbie here (so excuse me if I used a wrong term or for not being an expert/dev)
I own a (note 10.1 2014 Edition wifi) for like 3 years now. It feels slower and the battery life is not great compared to its newer versions. I've always thought, for such a high spec device, its illogical to just throw it away or purchase a newer model just for what feels like software limitations (please correct me if I'm wrong). So, I signed up here, in xda dev forum, looking for a way to install a fully functional OS (preferably newer and stable stock android). Most of the roms that I've found were in-complete or still underdevelopment (Which is great news) but I was wondering if I missed a thread with a fully functional Android for my device that I can just upgrade to.
I've tried alot of tips to speed up the tab, reducing animation duration, clearing cache, un-used apps, etc. but it still feels much slower compared to newer models with similar specs. I use my tab for browsing, movies, gaming, drawing, a little graphics design work and taking notes.
My device is not rooted (I tried, but I failed for some reason, I was trying to lower the display resolution and ppi) so I'm still running touchwiz - lolipop 5.1.1
Is there any thread to a fully functional stock Android for P600?
Thank you for your patience and for reading this,
I really appreciate it.
It's funny because I have had my Note 2014 since they were new, and I can't seem to find anything worth replacing it with. Where else can you find a tablet with >8000mAh battery?
I am running LineageOS (Android 7.1) on mine, with root, and I find it quick enough. I would love to get something with current generation specs but I can't find much that I like.
I mainly use mine for work (editing Word documents primarily) or web browsing. I honestly feel it holds up much better than it should compared with newer devices; that's a testament to how mediocre all the current tablet offerings are.

Exactly my thoughts! Thanks for your reply, I though for a sec there that it was all in my head lol.
So if you dont mind, I've some questions about the LineageOS (Android 7.1), how do you feel about it? Is there any issues with it? Anything that you came across that is not working or like software limitations? Is the pen working? Does it use something like a play store? Is all apps compatible with the OS with no issues (did you come across any app that failed to install or use coz of the OS)? How is the Battery life? How do you find games on it?
Sorry for the machinegun of questions ? I'm just excited that someone thinks similarly after what felt like a long silence lol. Again I thank you so much for your reply, I really appreciate it!

I can answer a few of those.
I'm using the RessurectionRemix ROM which is the same thing as Lineage but with additional features.
All of the hardware features actually work fine (IR blaster, SPen, etc.).
The only thing is you can't use Samsung's apps like S-Note but there are a few alternatives (Onenote, Evernote, papyrus, sketchbook). And SPenCommand (Paid App that requires Root) is what most people use to replace Air command.
Most custom ROMs have you flash GAPPS after the ROM which gives you access to the play store so you can get your apps/games from there.
Battery life is excellent compared to touchwiz, since there's no Samsung bloat installed.
If you wanted to compromise somewhere in the middle there's also a modified touchwiz marshmallow ROM which should have full samsung app/pen support and better battery life than lollipop (but still not as good as Lineage or RR).

Awesome! that sounds great and really comforting! how is the process of installing the rom, is it too difficult? what do you feel that is missing or not working properly, if there is any?
Thanks so much for your reply! I really appreciate it!

Well, the beginning is sort of complicated if you're starting from scratch but after that, it gets easier.
First, you have to get Odin so you can put TWRP on your device. You can find latest Odin here. And latest TWRP on this thread (get only the TWRP .tar file here).
Now put your device in download mode (turn it off then press Power+Volume Down).
Open up Odin then plug in the tablet and one of the top right boxes should turn blue. If it doesn't you might need to install the Samsung drivers from here.
Now click the options tab and uncheck Auto Reboot, click the AP button and choose the TWRP .tar file you downloaded, and press start. It should finish pretty fast.
When it's done hold down Power+Volume Up until you see the Samsung logo, and TWRP should show up. That's where you can finally install the ROM.
7.1.2 lineage

[Question] Recomnded stock version

Hello,
(Short version)
What is the best stock software version/update in your opinion?
Any reason not to upgrade to the latest version?
(More details)
Just got this tablet today.
I think I'll stay on stock for now.
Model - SM-T837R4
Came with version - T837R4TYU1BSCB
Update wants to update to version - T837R4TYS1BSE1
(attached current version in pics)
Thanks to anyone who helps in advanced.
Well, I think that it's always worh updating. Because of the newer security patches available. And just because you can
I'm on Android 10 and I see no differences with Android 9.
I'm on Android 10, last update, and everything runs smooth and perfectly. I agree with exnokiafan. Worth the update
Hm, I use this tablet to play Rules Of Survival and I suspect I had better performance on Pie than 10. I don't know if I can still agree with my previous answer .
Everything depends on the use you make of this tablet.

Thank you both for your input and giving your opinion.
I decided to update the tablet. I haven't had a chanceto use it yet, but just scrolling and opening apps looks fine and smooth
I plan tp use it mostly for watching content, and for 1 game, but rarely, so I belive it will be fine.
Thank you both again, appriciate it.

Nice. I Use the tablet just like you. One game and streaming contents to Chromecast. I have updated, kind of heavily debloated it with adb and rooted it. I still have to find a way to make it pass the cst check but since I don't use any banking app or anything similar I might forget about this detail. It's warranty is gone but it will expire in 2 months. Tbh this is the only device I haven't rooted at day one xD.
I needed root to try a couple of things in order to fix the heavy lag that affects rules of survival. LoL. I hope you will enjoy your updated and safe tablet ))
