What "default" apps have you replaced with 3rd party? - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Curious, what default Android apps have you replaced with 3rd party apps? Launcher, dialer, SMS, camera, etc?
For me I'm all stock at the moment except for using Nova launcher. I'd like to see what other people are using, though!

Staying all Google default.

Launcher - Action Launcher 3, sometimes Nova
SMS - Textra SMS
Calendar - Today Calendar
Calculator - Real Calc, my brain doesn't function in algebraic mode, must use RPN
Camera - several including the modified stock one from here called Camera X
Music - Spotify, currently boycotting PM because of the ****ty device limit
Keyboard - SwiftKey, I spell so crappy with the AOSP and Google keyboards
News & Weather - the app for my local news
Drive - I use it but also use Dropbox
I dont really use the other Google apps (except Gmail) so I dont have replacements for them.

ProShot camera, I have Camera FV-5 as well but it didn't want to take pictures yesterday ?

SMS - Textra
Calendar - Touch Calendar
Email - K9
Launcher - Nova Prime
Alarm - Xtreme Alarm
Hangouts - Weechat (own server, Prosody, Bitlbee, weechat, weechat android relay)

- swiftkey keyboard (much better autocorrect)
- bluemail for exchange email (no device policy BS, but no calendar/contact sync)
- Lightning browser + (has adblock, so it ran much smoother than chrome when I was stock, but now I'm running Chrome+Adblock)

In regards to Play Music.. if you reach the limit to remove devices you can chat in with them and they will reset them back to 0 as a "one time courtesy" I've used that "one time courtesy" 4 times already.. Hahah

Messaging and Drive. I am using Textra and One Drive. I don't like Gmail but switching is a hassle so I stick with it. I just hate conversation view. I also use Nova simply because I do not like the Google Search bar on the homescreen. I used to just deal with it until they made it look all pre-school-like and started adding "Ok, Google" search suggestions right there on the homescreen.

as written in the comments, this is not working for gmail since update to 2.3.3
AFAIK there is no working unread counter since GMail changed their permissions for the app.

that's the problem!!!!! :-(
and wonder why google with ics has not included this by design...
Missed It!.
And for the GMail problem, try this workaround.

It's a livewallpaper but it does work with all the notifications you ask about with Android 4.x .. the wife messed with it for a while. I was fine with the missed stuff being in the pull down so I never downloaded it. She likes/liked it well enough .. don't know if she's still using it.
This is one of Android's most frustrating things: not having a uniform on-icon notification system. Widgets are fine, but I really don't need yet another widget taking up space, when I already have the icon on the desktop.
I hate the way the notification bar is implemented. It's too small, too ugly and it get's so cluttered that it is hard to tell at a quick glance what the notifications are. Frankly, the iOS notifications bar implementation is way better visually (if you agree, check out the app iPhone Notifications in the Market).
On-icon notifications work randomly. Even the stock launcher does not show on-icon notifications for the stock Email app (not GMail). There is not notification for Google Voice (why, is beyond me). The whole scheme is a mess.
I have kind of been able to make things work with ADW Notifier in Chuck Noritz Mode, but ADW Notifier does not seem to be supported much nowadays, so the service FCs multiple times a day.
I wish that someone would bring in good implementation of on-icons notifications, or that Google redesigns the whole notification scheme and streamlines it.

Looking for the same thing, tried NOVA launcher but they left our that most important feature. To me that is #1 most wanted thing in a launcher, before all else.

If you want it on your lock screen then use WidgetLocker with ADW Notifier. If you want it on your home screen or on your dock then use ADW EX with ADW Notifier.

Yeah, ADW Notifier is pretty much the only thing that sort of works, but as I said above, it FCs constantly and it is inconsistent. Go Launcher also has a notifier, but it works with a much more limited number of apps (you can't get notifications for Google Voice or the stock Email app, for instance).
So far, I have not been able to find a reliable on-icon notifier for Android.

I can't speak to your experience, but I have used ADW EX and Notifier since I got my Nexus and haven't had any FC's or problems with it. That is when applying it to Gmail, the stock messenging app, and the Phone app since that's what the OP inquired about. None of these require the use of Chuck Norris mode, and at least for me none have failed yet. My main reason for switching was the big **** LauncherPro took on ICS, and have been happy with the results since.
ADW Notifier done FC only for some particular aplication not for sms, Gmail, K9, missed call, but for for some sms aplication like go sms and other, a lot sms app in fact adw notifier works until the next reboot
It's the reason why i stopped using it, Missed it is good, personaliy now i use Executive assistant for sms, missed call and K9, Gmail.
There is a free version , try and see.

Well, as I mentioned above, many of us use Google Voice for voicemail (instead of what's offered by the service provider). GV requires Chuck Noritz Mode, and it works most of the time, although it often shows "?" instead of the number of vm messages.
Many of us also use email accounts which are not GMail -- the stock Email app also requires Chuck Noritz Mode.
ADW Notifier has not been updated in a long time, I hope the next update is soon and it fixes some of these issues.
In fairness, it is not really ADW's fault. It sounds like the Android notification system is a complete mess, with no clear standards for developers to follow.
It is simply amazing that even two of the main Google apps, Google Voice and Email, cannot handle notifications properly, like Phone or Messenger. Very sloppy.

[Q] No email or calendar widgets except magazine xu?

Is there a way, without downloading a 3rd party app, to get the samsung calendar and/or email widgets aside from what are on the magazine ux, which are a bit cumbersome in my opinion. I'd prefer to have the same widgets I have on my galaxy S5: full screen month view calendar widget, and the default email widget. Is there a way to do this, also, without doing a different launcher, like Nova, which I've tried and don't love.
Odd Samsung would strip these out, but they clearly want to push this magazine ux thing.
Thanks in advance for the help!
I am also looking for the calendar widget. Someone knows how to get it? I don't like this magazine ux

I too was annoyed at this. I didn't mind losing TouchWiz, but wanted to stay stock for potential future updates (please Google change SD card write access) so I downloaded the "Google Now Launcher" to get rid of the Magazine UX (although I didn't install "Google Now" so not to have that pop up on the home screen). I use "Pure Grid Calendar Widget" from the Play Store. If you choose the "4x4 free" calendar you can set the pixel count for your tablet/preference upon creating the widget. I have it around 1550x1550 pixels for my Tab Pro 8.4 and stretched it to fit most of the screen.
I liked Pure Grid Calendar Widget on my old HD2, but didn't need it on my S3 and S5 because the Samsung Calendar was similar. Enable events in the timeline to show descriptions in month view on the widget. I also wanted a full-screen email widget for 2 accounts, so I downloaded Aqual Mail, which looks and works similar to the S5 Email widget. I stretched that widget to full screen too (or square with some app shortcuts below it).
All in all, Google Now Launcher made the Home Screen interface seem less laggy (along with some adjustments to animations in Develop Options). Add in these two free apps (paid version unlocks additional features) and I it gives a similar feel to my S5 setup. I know you said you didn't want to download any apps, but this seems to be the only option (I didn't check Samsung Apps for a calendar though, don't know if they have something there).
***Note: I don't have any apps installed on the SD Card, but some people say that the shortcuts for apps installed on SD Cards disappear from the Home Screen if you use the Google Now Launcher.

Don't use Anti-virus and don't think you need one as long as you're not blindly installing apps
SDMaid and I don't think it's a placebo!
Nova Prime
Google Calendar
BetterBatteryStats and EX Kernel Manager battery info
Chrome
Android Messages (I hardly use SMS anyway so I didn't bother looking for alternatives) (WhatsApp is my main messaging platform)
Solid Explorer
Use my local bank's app for finance
Snapseed for photo editing
Don't use a video editor on my smartphone
Hope this helps!

Looks good. Accubattery is better for battery stats and the Samsung Internet Browser (really!) is the best browser. https://www.androidauthority.com/samsung-internet-browser-android-793983/
For SMS's try this app - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.android.smsorganizer&hl=en_IN
It automatically segregates most of the transaction/spam sms into separate bins and does a good job of it.
Best calendar IMHO is Business Calendar 2. Interface is much better than Google Calendar, more customizable, and syncs with Google Calendar flawlessly
I've been using the Norton junk cleaner for system and such, and manually cleaning the cache for the apps that get bad. Does sd maid do app cache cleaning too? I see it works with root. Also, is it worth it to get pro? Tell me more please!
I personally like AppMgr III (App Manager 3) for System/Cache Cleaner and, especially (but not applicable for taimen), if you have a device that employs an external sd card...

User experience questions from a new Pixel 3XL user

After many years of using Samsung phones, I just switched to a Google Pixel 3XL (which is rooted with the stock ROM). While the new phone seems to be quite good, there are some minor ‘issues’ that have cropped up – most probably due to my familiarity with the Samsung devices…
Merging contacts: Using MyPhoneExplorer, I imported my Outlook contacts into the phone. I also configured LinkedIn so that those contacts would also go into the contact list. Unlike the Samsung phone, the Pixel did a much better job of merging contacts. However, it missed a few and I cannot figure out how to manually merge them. How is this done?
Keyboard: One of the Samsung features I miss the most is being able to long-press letter keys to get symbols, e.g., long-press ‘a’ to get ‘@’. The Pixel approach of having to switch to a separate keyboard is annoying. Is there some way to enable the long-press functionality?
Image gallery: The default image gallery on the Pixel is Google photos, but I have no interest in sync’ing stuff with the cloud. The Samsung phone came with a really simple gallery app which met my needs. Is there such an app on the Pixel that I missed? If not, what gallery app do you recommend?
Aspect ratio: The ‘images’ for two of my apps, specifically the widget for Weather Underground and Enjoy Sudoku, are elongated – they should be square but are appearing as rectangles. Is there any way to adjust this via settings or is this a fault of the apps?
Autoruns: When my phone reboots, I see notifications that two apps are seeking permissions. However, when I looked to see what apps are autorunning, none are listed. Why this apparent discrepancy? How can I determine which apps are launching after a reboot?
You can change the keyboard settings to show symbol on long pressing,as for Google photo you can turn backup off.
No idea for other things.

Merging contacts: I have a Note 8 too. I personally believe Google contacts does a better job of syncing and merging contacts, specially if sync is on for contacts. If you could play around with it maybe you will find what suits you.
Keyboard: `Long press for symbols` option in keyboard preferences.
Image gallery: Turn the sync off if you don't want it.
Aspect ratio: Try nova launcher and see if it solves it for you.
Autoruns: What apps need what permissions?

download quickpic 3.4.9.1 <-- this version is just a gallery with no backup/syncing in the background its what i use on all my androids, reminds me of samsungs gallery... (or was it huawei) either way.
i use chrooma keyboard, completely customizable. and does exactly what you want
as for merging im pretty sure this can be done on a PC since its easier might want to go to go google contacts on a pc and attempt to do it there.
Thanks for the helpful replies!
Merging contacts: I avoid using Google products (so why did I buy this phone?). I have turned off syncing the contacts on the phone with the cloud, so addressing this issue via the PC won't work. What is odd is that the contacts stored in the phone app are separate from the Contact app. Will keep poking around on the phone, but not finding anything useful...
Keyboard settings - did not dig deeply enough to find this, thanks.
Google Photos - I did turn off sync, but had forgotten to hit the 'Confirm' button - big duh. Now it is working, will heck it out - and QuickPic as well.
Aspect ratio: I am using Nova Launcher.
Autoruns: The two apps seeking permission are Chromium (I have disabled Chrome) and an app from my local utility company.

Question Must have apps

I know we have a few threads about battery-saving apps or theme managers. Just wanted to know, outside of those what are your must-have apps/Wigets. I am always looking to try new products and services but always like to hear real-world experiences.
Some of mine,
Pandora

Slack
Outlook
K9-mail
WeatherBug

Kiwi Browser
Twitter
Adguard
Liv Dark
Nova
Walli
YouTube Vanced

CLZ apps

Swift Backup
Magisk
EV apps

HEOS
Just to name a few. I'm an app hoarder though. I had like over 350 apps installed before getting this phone. For the first time ever, chose to only reinstall about half for my restore.
I use my phone for a lot of crap. LOL
EDIT: forgot Nova. Definitely always have Nova! Oh and Textra for SMS.
I do like textra as well. Trying to compare to pixel messenger. Its been a long time since I've used the native app. Ive only started to scratch the surface of nova with all the options it gives.
