Flashing Malaysk ROM onto a EONON GA5163F (MTCB-ZD-V2.81 MCU) - MTCB Android Head Units Q&A

I have installed a EONON GA5163F (800x480, RK3188, 4.4) which has a MTCB-ZD-V2.81 MCU and I'd like to install Malaysk ROM onto it.
I'm planning to install the Malaysk ROM based off of these steps: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64412222&postcount=19
My only concern is, how do I go about backing up my current ROM? In case the Malaysk ROM install goes wrong, I want to be able to have a back up stock ROM so I can restore onto my head unit. I can't seem to find the stock ROM for my unit online and I don't see any clear steps on how to back up my current one.
Any other helpful tips for a newbie?
Thanks,

Root it first(*#hct#root# - factory settings) adb on, unknown sources off, install busybox\superSu - reboot
install nandroid APP(google store), make the backup, copy to sd\usb
After all that follow the malaysk ROM FAQ to install
Rk3188 only firmware(ROM) not MCU!
Rock On

Flashify from the Google Play Store will allow you to reboot into recovery. If you'd rather not download an app, put the car into ACC mode, press and hold the power button, and recovery should pop up.

[Q] Rooting and Installing Cleanrom for Note2

I'm so sorry if any of my questions are just basic. I'm so confused about rooting and installing a new rom.
I just switched to an Android phone from over 4 years of using an iPhone. I have found out that Rooting is not as easy as jailbreaking.
1. Is there a step by step guide that I can find to install Cleanrom 3.3 on my Note 2?
--- I'm confused because i thought rooting was installing a new version of a rom, but if I'm correct i have to root, then install a new rom and kernel?
2. Is there a way to back up my stock phone so that if I want to do a factory reset all i have to do is reboot to the saved stock version?
3.Is there anything that I should do before rooting and installing a new rom in case of mistakes?

Jailbreaking and Rooting are not the same thing:
http://www.androidpit.com/jailbreak-android
http://android.appstorm.net/general/iphone-jailbreaking-vs-android-rooting/
Basic steps:
1. Root with Odin (using you computer and phone plugged into USB)
- Some info here and how to here (instructions and download needed on post 2):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1980644
2. Flash a custom recovery:
- easy method: Go the Google play store and install "Goomanager" this app will install TWRP custom recovery.
3. flash you custom ROM (make sure it made for your phones model)
- Download your desired COMPATIBLE ROM
- Move ROM to your Note II
- Turn off phone and boot into recovery (holding Power+VolUp+Home, I think?)
- Click backup and backup you current ROM, just in case (this will back up your stock & rooted ROM)
- Once in recovery click install, navigate to where you placed the ROM on you device, choose you ROM and install
This is mostly from memory, so I still recommend you do some reading. Here is a good place to start:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1987541
It's really not that hard you just have to take it step by step and make sure you follow instructions. Read, read, read.
Hope this helps you get started, and welcome to Android!

personally, i'm a huge advocate of a jig, which is essentially a little device that you can plug into your micro-usb of your phone that will force it into download mode.
Download mode is the mode you will need to be in to use Odin, which is the program you use to flash certain things that are not packaged to be flashed via recovery.
note that recovery and download more are not the same thing. recovery is volume up-home-power and download mode is volume down-home-power... they are two separate things.
why is a jig useful: in the rare event that you do something completely wrong like flash a rom that isn't for your phone and you can't get into recovery using the 3 button combo but the phone is showing signs of life... then insert the jig and BOOM instand download mode, you can get to stock with odin from there, re-root/install recovery and then flash your previously backed up rom and carry on merrily as if nothing happened.
it's like having a safety net.
a simple XDA search can teach you how to build one, or you can go on ebay and for like 3 bucks get one...you may not use it for a while but then one day the time will come when you're hooped and you remember you have your jig and it'll be the best 3 bucks + shipping you ever spent lol

[Q] Custom ROM Installation Help

I have the Galaxy S III SGH-i747m model on stock Jelly Bean 4.1.1 ROM on the Canadian Rogers network. (I live in BC)
I have been trying, unsuccessfully, to install a custom ROM. I have rooted and installed Super User, and have flashed the TWRP Recovery ROM v2.4.1.0 I still have the stock kernel and haven't mucked around in the permissions besides installing SuperUser SU app from Google Play store. Right now, I have managed to wipe out my entire internal storage. I have everything backed up on the google server, so I'm not too worried, but I have no OS right now. Regardless, I have tried many times with many different custom ROMs, and everytime I get a Status 7 error and a failed ROM flash. I have been trying for weeks to find out what I'm doing wrong, but can't seem to find anything that works. Can anyone please help me out with a step by step guide to install a custom rom? Heck, even to re-install my stock ROM would be better than nothing at this point. The last guide I tried to follow was Cyanogenmod 10.1. The file was called Liquid Smooth.
I currently have the ROM file and the gapps pakage on my external SD card, but, everytime I try to install it I get that Status 7 error.
Thanks in advance.

make sure you have the correct ROM and gapps (compatible with your model). then i would try a different recovery.
you could download this flashable clockworkmod recovery zip and place it on your external sd card: http://d-h.st/8qP
it's not a touch version. you'll have to use the vol up and vol down buttons to navigate and the power button the select.
in twrp, mount external sd and then flash the CWM recovery like you would a rom. reboot into recovery.
make sure the external sd is still mounted and flash ROM & gapps twice. reboot

I can't seem to do anything now. Did I brick my phone?
Can you not get into recovery any more? If you can why dont you post the links for the rom you are trying to install and we can tell you if its the right one. Also do you have a external SD card to put the ROM and Gapps on

he has the rom and gapps on the external already.
if you can get into download mode, i'd try restoring via odin
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1968625&highlight=stock+firmware
1. Extract contents of the zip/rar archives
2. Wipe data-factory reset/cache/dalvik-cache
3. Plug phone into PC
4. Place the phone in Download Mode (vol dwn + home + power). Press volume up when prompted
5. Open Odin and ensure the COM box is highlighted, detecting your device
6. Uncheck the Auto Reboot option
7. In the PDA box, select the .tar.md5 file you downloaded
8. Flash the file by hitting Start
9. Once you get a Success message, pull the battery and then replace. Immediately go into recovery (vol up + home + power. release power button at Galaxy S3 logo and/or vibrate).
10. Select Wipe data/factory reset, then wipe cache. Reboot
you can then do some research and decide what files/procedures you want to try if you wish to root again and flash custom firmware
Thanks for the help guys. I am attempting to restore my phone right now. Will let you know how it went.
OK! Up and running! And I have it rooted with the latest TWRP recovery image installed. Now I just need to find a good custom ROM. Thanks againg guys!

SM-T800 on Marshmallow 6.0.1 - How do you root or install TWRP on this?

Just flash TWRP with Odin then flash the supersu zip through TWRP.
Thanks. I got through it all. It's been a while since I've rooted this tablet. My Linux laptop and Virtualbox eventually played nice. Also, apparently any old cord doesn't work. I had to use the original Samsung USB cable for Download Mode to work.

This link is not for our tablets but is the same process. Just make sure you find the correct TWRP version for the T800. Once you have TWRP installed find Supersu and copy it to your tablet's SD card. Use TWRP to install Supersu. http://www.cyanogenmods.org/forums/topic/install-twrp-recovery-samsung-android-using-odin/

https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s/development/rom-android-6-marshmallow-tab-s-10-5-lte-t3219759
So how do I go about it please? Do I need to unlock the bootloader?
:edit: Followed the guide and got TWRP installed. Downloaded the Gapps (very slow download), SuperSu zip and Nougat rom from here. Did a wipe of dalvik, cache, data and system. Sorted. Only problem is I bought the tablet for reading comics and for some reason my comic reading apps can't "see" the cbr files on the micro SD.
So I have tried re downloading Odin and Twrp and flashing it. It passes Everytime. But when I boot to recovery with power home and vol up. It goes to Android recovery. Any tips solutions you could help me with? Thanks very much in advance
After flashing twrp in odin did you reboot to recovery ? Pretty sure u need to reboot to recovery to get it to "stick",
Otherwise I believe your tab will change it back to origanal recovery
DOWNLOAD:
1) Install the TWRP app from the Play Store or grab the apk from our website
2) Open the app, agree to the terms, and enable root access
3) Select TWRP Flash
4) Search for your device and select the version you wish to download
5) Once the download is complete, select the file (it's usually in your downloads folder) and then Flash Recovery
OR:
Most devices can be updated quickly and easily within TWRP if you already have version 2.8.4.0 or higher installed
1) Download the latest version from our website on your device
2) Reboot to TWRP
3) Hit Install and tap the "Images..." button in the lower right
4) Browse to the location of the TWRP image on your device and select it
5) Select recovery from the partition list and swipe to flash
OR:
You can find more information and download links on our website.
I had the same problem and I solved it by chance by finding a post online. It seems that after you flash TWRP with Odin it is indeed properly installed but you can't access it because when you boot into recovery it boots into Samsung's recovery. To get to TWRP you need to do the following:
1. Power off your Galaxy Tab S 10.5. Wait 6-7 seconds after screen goes off.
2. Press and hold the three buttons Power + Home + Volume down together until you see warning screen.
3. Press Volume Up to continue to download mode.
4. Reboot again pressing POWER + HOME +VOL DOWN but as soon as the screen goes blank immediately change to VOL UP whilst still holding the other buttons and wait.
5. Voila TWRP!
I hope it worked for you as it did for me.

Haven't flashed in over 2 years. Missing anything?

I went to the dark side in April 2016, and haven't flashed anything in about 2 years. Wife's tablet (flo) needs an update, MM is getting laggy though the tablet has always been good to us.
Titanium was getting to be crap around the last time I used it, with problems mostly restoring, does that still hold true? Might just use it to back up a couple apps she uses a lot and just use Play Store to restore the rest. It's not really important, just curious.
Downloading the TWRP app, I know TWRP is installed but willing to bet it needs to be updated and the app can do that.
Tablet is near its EOL, not planning on rooting it if the ROM doesn't come pre-rooted. I have no idea what Magisk is.
So I'm gonna go into TWRP, wipe system, wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik. Flash ROM (going with Lineage 15.1). Now at one point 2-3 years ago the common wisdom was starting to become "flash ROM, boot ROM, reboot to recovery and then flash Gapps." Y'all still doing that? Or can I just flash Gapps right after flashing ROM and reboot then?
Bit nervous as I haven't flashed in a while, but also kind of exciting.
We've got Android 8.1 Oreo now... Working perfectly on our Nexus 7... You should check it out...
Any suggestions for which are the most stable roms to try? I'm in the same boat. I'm on android 6.0.1, stopped flashing things a while ago and it might even be official! But mine's running like a dog so think I wanna try something to jazz it up!
You should try pure Nexus rom based on 7.1.2 for ultimate good battery life. Oreo is Good but battery isn't the greatest.
Well i have been rooting for a bit.
My N7 2013 Flo is not rooted. It is unlocked.
I thought i have via adb fastboot put latest twrp on it...but i turn it off (go into bootloader) toggle into recovery...tarp is not there (triangle with red 'i').....
I dont want to go ballistic but I never would have thought I am having such a hard time putting recovery image onto it.
It is stock 6.1
CF root doesn't exist anymore...some say use majisk....that's not working....
Without a recovery tool....(twrp) nothing can be flashed..

Firstly, your stock 6.1 is ancient and obsolete. Here are detailed instructions to install a modern Android, TWRP and root....

I did the 'install lineageOS on flo and installed TWRP latest. Seem like fastboot went into a slew of commands
and finished. I followed the steps to reboot into recovery and twrp is not there. Android dude opened with red triangle.
I have no clue whats up. I leave it sit, and it reboots into android splash screen and bootsup so i can use the tablet. I guess this is why I am soo perplexed. "Am i missing something?"

I think you have missed this step.... "Note many devices will replace your custom recovery automatically during first boot. To prevent this, use Google to find the proper key combo to enter recovery. After typing fastboot reboot, hold the key combo and boot to TWRP. Once TWRP is booted, TWRP will patch the stock ROM to prevent the stock ROM from replacing TWRP. If you don't follow this step, you will have to repeat the install." - https://twrp.me/asus/asusnexus72013wifi.html

Wait, is Kevin_McLaughlin=ganggreen777 ?
Anyway, here is an alternative way:
- fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.2.3-0-flo.img (please copy the output and post it here)
- fastboot reboot-bootloader
- select recovery in the bootloader
That's it, but you must do it in this order or else TWRP will be gone again.

You need to do the following in TWRP:
(Optional, but recommended): Select the Backup button to create a backup.
Select Wipe and then Advanced Wipe.
Select Cache, System and Data partitions to be wiped and then Swipe to Wipe.
Go back to return to main menu, then select Install.
Navigate to /sdcard , and select the LineageOS .zip package.

S9 in boot-loop, no OS, just twrp

It's been three years since i changed phones and I naively thought that things had gotten easier.
But nope. Still a mess of stiching together various incomplete "guides" from around the web only
to end up with a phone stuck in a boot-loop.
It's a Galaxy S9. Using Odin I've been able to install TWRP 3.3.1-0.
With that I tried installing both Carbon ROM as well as Havoc OS each followed by Open Gapps 8.
In some of the "guides" there was mentions of no-verity, so I've tried adding that in various steps.
Still, the only thing that works reliably is power+bixby+up to enter twrp. It's the only way I've found
to power down the phone.
Very grateful for any suggestion.
I've thought about installing the ROM using Odin, but I'm afraid that I would lose twrp.
From TWRP boot into download mode and use Odin to flash stock.
Or download soldier ROM and flash that in TWRP. It's based on stock ROM.

Thanks for taking the time to reply - I appreciate it!
Just to be suuuper clear: Should I flash the ROM the same way as I did twrp? Option AP and F. Reset time?
And why stock ROM? That's where I came from. Ultimately I want a custom ROM (preferably Carbon or Havoc).
Is this a step towards that?

Flashing stock will return your phone to the way it was when you bought it, having to flash TWRP etc all over again
When flashing stock you flash all 4 sections together and do not change any settings in Odin
CSC = Reset phone
HOME CSC = Do not reset
Only use one or the other
You will need to use CSC if you have TWRP / Custom installed
If you are wanting a custom ROM flashed from TWRP you should wait for someone else who knows why it won't flash to help you as I have just kept stock on my S9 so don't know what's wrong
You do know you flash the custom ROM zip using TWRP right? Copying it to your SD card then choosing it from TWRP itself, not using Odin

That's exactly what I did. I used Odin to install twrp and then tried to install the custom ROM with twrp. That's when the wheels came off and the phone got stuck booting.
So what do I do to install a custom ROM on my S9?
I'm positive I've followed every step of the guides, but there's always the feeling that they are written for AnyAndroidPhone (TM) and that there's some device-specific quirk that's left out.

Then you should follow the guides on this XDA S9 forum instead, then you know they are for the S9

you still bricked?
In TWRP did the internal storage maybe say 0mb? Tat happens when you dont abort the factory reset after OEM unlock. If it is that than just go to advanced wipe, pormat your data to fat2 and then back to fat4
Hey there, I had the exact same problem over the past 2 days - so I feel your frustration.
I have a 9604f (galaxy s9) , and there are different types so you may have to see if yours is different. I also used ressurrection remix OS. Short version is:
1. Get resurrection remix (final version for starlte)
2. Get gapps (for 8.1 arm64)
3. Get magisk
The above 3 are all on the post for the official resurrection remix on this site with the header -[ROM] [OFFICIAL] [6/01/18] ResurrectionRemix 6.0 for S9/S9+ (Exynos)
4. Download the BRE5 vendor. I used a link that went to a mega.nz site and it worked. So I'm sure you'll be able to find one. I can't post links cause this is my first post.
5. Boot into twrp
6. Format data in wipe section of twrp
7. Wipe dalvik, cache, data, system.
8. Install in this order -do not reboot or wipe anything. Just install.
(I) BRE5 vendor
(II) resurrection remix ROM
(III) gapps
9. DONT WIPE cache, and reboot into the OS
10. If you want root -just go back into twrp once you have set up google, apps etc. And then install the magisk zip.
update
Not bricked any more.
The advice from @basicreece to install soldier worked. I made a second attempt to install Carbon afterwards but that resulted again in a twrp-only device. Now I'm back on soldier.
Perhaps I'll give @Madsikhey's instructions a go later.
To show my gratitude for all the help in times of darkness I'd like to give back and I'll let @basicreece decide:
1. Donation to XDA
2. Donation to EFF
3. A beer/coffee for yourself (PayPal)
Answer me in a PM.

Thanks :good::good::good:
I have somewhat same problem. Rooted my S9 original OS and it worked fine. After power off the phone is in bootloop and the only way to shut the phone off is to boot in the twrp and reboot-->shut off.
And the only way to get to the twrp is power+volume up+bixby button combination.
I made a thread about my problem, it's here
Problems with rooting Galaxy S9 (Android 10 Exynos SM-G960F)
Hi, this is My first post here, so be gentle. My old Oneplus died and I bought a used Samsung Galaxy S9. I tested the phone with an original OS and it worked fine. Yesterday I decided to root it (there are a few features that need root and I...

Now I'm stuck and I need a help to proceed. What i should do to get the phone open again? Would it be a good idea to flash lineageOS now, or is there a way to reset the phone back to original?
I can open trwp or download mode, but cannot boot to the OS.
